We have heard about people who have special memories. Recently there has been a report about a woman from Australia who can remember almost every detail (细节) of all the events in her daily life.
Rebecca Sharrock, 25, is one of just 80 people worldwide who have been identified (确定)as having Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory(HSAM,超级自传体记忆 症). It means she can remember every small event-which most people would forget within(在·····以内) days--as if it had happened just minutes ago.
“I remember my mom putting me in the driver's seat of a car and taking a picture of me when I was 12 days old,” she said. “That's my earliest memory. I remember every day since then. I can't tell all the dates exactly because I was too young to understand calendars, but I remember what I did that very day, what the weather was' like and so on.”
Rebecca can also re-experience taste. If she's eating something that she doesn't like, she thinks about Black Forest cake, her favorite food, and the memory will be so strong that she can nearly “taste” it.
However, sometimes her memories prove(证明) to be painful. Because they're not just events that she remembers.“When I relive(再体验)memories, the feelings return, too,” Rebecca said. “For example, I remember falling over when I was three at my grandparents' house and hurting my left knee. It was a Christmas night. I was an unlucky nurse who had to work on such a beautiful festival. When I was complaining(抱怨)about it, three people appeared at my desk-a tired woman and two children.
“Are you all sick ” I asked doubtfully because they seemed all right.
“Yes,” the woman answered weakly and lowered her head.
But when they started to present their problems, things became unclear. One child had a fever, but his temperature was OK. The other child had an earache, but she could not tell me which ear hurt. It seemed that the mother was pretending(假装) to cough.
Something was wrong. But I only explained that it might take a while before a doctor could meet them. “Take your time, please,” said the mother. I checked their charts-no address. Suddenly I knew, they were homeless while the hospital was warm.
The family huddled(蜷缩) together under the Christmas tree, smiling and talking with each other sweetly. Quietly, I went back to the nurses' station and told them what happened in the waiting room. Up to 65% of children don't get as much sleep as they should do, and this can make them nervous and slower at school, scientists say.
So how long should young people sleep each night The answer is between eight and ten hours. If you don't get enough sleep at night, you'll have less energy the next day.
But the scientists say many children have missed out on 4, 500 hours of sleep by the time they are seven years old. They say that children miss sleep because they have TVs and computers in their rooms, and busy parents don't read to their younger children at night any more. The traditional “bedtime story” helps children to relax and fall asleep peacefully. Children with TVs and computers in their bedrooms were more likely to sleep badly, and to get less than eight hours' sleep. Even losing one hour's sleep a night can mean that children do less well at school.
German scientists think that your brain(大脑) keeps working while you are asleep. To show that they were right, they gave two groups of people a problem to work out. One group went to sleep, and the other group stayed awake. The result The people who slept worked out the answer more quickly. This showed that their brains had been trying to find the answer while the people were asleep. So,make sure you get enough sleep tonight, and you'll be at your best tomorrow!
