中篇小说《老人与海》是海明威著名的代表作之一,1951年创作于古巴,1952年问世,发表于美国《生活》杂志。故事讲述了古巴老渔夫桑提亚哥在海上独自街到一条巨大的马林鱼并与之周旋、搏斗,历经三天最终捕获大鱼,在返航途中却又遭受鲨鱼袭击的经历。故事弘扬了人类迎接挑战及勇敢面对失败的无畏气概。此书的出版给海明威带来了极大的荣誉:1953年海明威获得普利策奖,以及美国文学院小说金质奖章。1954年,“因为精通于叙事艺术,突出地表现在其近著《老人与海》之中;同时也因为对当代文体风格之影响”而获得诺贝尔文学奖。该书成为经久不衰的畅销书。

海明威(Hemingway)全名为Ernest Miller Hemingway(1899-1961),美国著名现代作家,1953年普利策奖、1954年诺贝尔文学奖获得者。海明威被誉为美利坚民族的精神丰碑,并且是“新闻体”小说的创始人。海明威写作风格简洁、硬朗,有“文坛硬汉”之称,对美国文学及20世纪世界文学的发展有极深远的影响,代表作包括《老人与海》《永别了,武器》《大阳照常升起》等。

Language points
1. What do you want to be when you grow up
when用作连词,“当……时”,用来引导时间状语从句。在when引导的时间状语从句中,主语是一般将来时,从句要用一般现在时表示将来。
2. How are you going to do that I’m going to practice basketball every day.
这是一个be going to用于特殊疑问句的句子, be going to表示将要发生的动作, “计划, 打算”, 后跟动词原形。常跟表将来的时间连用。
practice作动词,表示“(不间断地)练习”,后可用名词作宾语,若跟动词时需用动名词形式。
例:He always wants to practice his English with me.
他总是想跟我练习英语。
3. Wow, now I know why you’re so good at writing stories.
why引导的宾语从句的复合句。why从句作know的宾语,需用陈述句语序。why在此作连词,意为“为什么”。
be good at“擅长,在……方面成绩好”,at后可接名词、代词或动名词作宾语。
同义词组: do well in 在……方面做得好
例:I am good at playing chess.
我擅长下象棋。
4. Well, I’m going to keep on writing stories, of course.
keep on “反复地做;继续进行”,
keep on doing sth. 意为“不断地做某事”。
例:她虽疲劳但仍继续工作。
She kept on working, although she was tired.
(1)keep doing sth. “一直做某事”。
例:他在那儿一动不动地站了一个小时。
He kept standing there for an hour without moving.
(2)keep sb. doing sth. “让某人一直做某事”。
例:对不起,让你久等了。Sorry, I kept you waiting so long.
5. My parents want me to be a doctor, but I’m not sure about that.
be sure about sth/doing sth. 确信某事,
确信做某事, 对做某事有把握。
例:他确信他们会对这个感兴趣。
He is sure about their interest in it.
be sure的用法:
(1) be sure+of/about+动名词或名词,
“确信 ……; 对……有把握”。
例:他自信会成功的。 He is sure of success.
(2) be sure + that从句,“肯定……;有
把握……”, 主句的主语一定是人,可以替换为
It is certain + that从句。
例:我相信吸烟对你没有好处。
I’m sure that smoking is not good for you.
6. Just make sure you try your best.
make sure “确保,查明”,其后可跟that (可省略)引导的宾语从句、动词不定式或of 短语。
例:离开前务必将房间打扫干净。
Make sure to clean the room before you leave.
