中篇小说《老人与海》是海明威著名的代表作之一,1951年创作于古巴,1952年问世,发表于美国《生活》杂志。故事讲述了古巴老渔夫桑提亚哥在海上独自钓到一条巨大的马林鱼并与之周旋、搏斗,历经三天最终捕获大鱼,在返航途中却又遭受鲨鱼袭击的经历。故事弘扬了人类迎接挑战及勇敢面对失败的无畏气概。
此书的出版给海明威带来了极大的荣誉。1953年海明威获得普利策奖,以及美国文学院小说金质奖章。1954年,“因为精通于叙事艺术,突出地表现在其近著《老人与海》之中;同时也因为对当代文体风格之影响”而获得诺贝尔文学奖。该书成为经久不衰的畅销书,并且世界各地的许多教师都把此书作为英雄主义教育的教材,推荐给广大学生。
