Dear Leslie,
I really enjoyed watching your English speech competition on TV and I was delighted to see you win the first prize. On hearing this exciting news, I can’t wait to write to express my congratulations to you.
It did not surprise me at all when the host announced you as the winner. With an inspiring and motivational topic as well as fluent pronunciation and confident presentation, there is no doubt that you deserved to win the competition. As a famous saying goes, no pains, no gains. You have always been industrious and perseverant. Before the competition, every morning you stood in front of the mirror, practised speaking English loudly and corrected your accent again and again. Your hard work has now finally paid off. As you said in your speech, success really does come from hard work.
Congratulations once again. I wish you further success in the future.
Yours,
Li Hua

The Girl Who Never Talked
I never really felt like I fit in. I was a freshman in high school and my only close friend was Bella, whom I had known since kindergarten. Bella is and will always be one of my best friends and we often play together. However, she had other close friends too, but I didn’t. I was on the volleyball team, and on the court I knew exactly who I was and where I was supposed to be. I loved all of my teammates, but when we were sitting in the stands before and after games I would just sit there quietly, totally unsure of myself.
At school, no one spoke to me and I didn’t know how to get along with them. It seems like the only time anyone talked to me was just to jokingly say, “You are so quiet! Do you ever talk ” I wanted to talk, but I just couldn’t find the words. I never felt like I knew what to say in a big group of people. All of these made me upset.
One Saturday after our game, Bella was supposed to come over and spend the night at my house. We always had a lot of fun together. I wished that I could talk to the other girls the way I talked to her. But before we left the gym that day, some of the other volleyball girls invited her to go to the movies with them. Since Bella had already made plans with me, they asked if I would like to go to the movies with them too. I agreed and was happy to have a chance to join them.
One of the moms drove us, and we all piled into the back seat of her Suburban—Rhiannon, Destinee, Christine, Bella, and me. I was kind of nervous at first, but once it was just us five, I came out of my shell. It turned out that I really wanted to fit in.
However, my previous unsureness made me feel a little hesitant and scared to talk.
I smiled, knowing I finally had friends and my school life would be much happier.
However, my previous unsureness made me feel a little hesitant and scared to talk. “What if nobody responds to me What if I mess up again ” All of these terrible thoughts whirled up in my mind. But as we drove along, merry giggles echoed in the car, dispelling some of the unease inside me. At the sight of the girls’ eyes twinkling with amusement, I gradually let down my guard, “I really enjoy the time together with you.” To my surprise, the awkward silence I was waiting for did not appear. What greeted me was the enthusiastic response from the girls. “Yes, I feel like we had been friends for many years.” Christine and Destinee replied with excitement, “We should do this more often!” Their words filled my heart like warm streams, melting all my disbelief and confusion.
I smiled, knowing I finally had friends and my school life would be much happier. The time spent on that Saturday was deeply printed in my mind. Our laughter along the way was just a spiritual resource, offering continuous support to me when I was afraid to talk with others. More importantly, I realized the strength of friends. When in school, I had friends to play with; when I came across a problem on study, they were always trying to help; when in trouble, I had friends to turn to for help. With all of my friends aside, I am more confident than before and I have made great progress in my study now. Friends really benefit me a lot.
However, my previous unsureness made me feel a little hesitant and scared to talk. Other girls chatting, laughing and expecting me to utter a word, with hesitation I could just open and then close my mouth repeatedly but say nothing finally, only to smile and listen quietly. For that, they showed their understanding and tolerance, but a wave of self-blame seized me tightly—why couldn’t I express myself bravely However, the next second, a familiar hand took hold of mine, bringing endless power to my sinking heart. I felt Bella’s encouragement and heaved a sigh of relief. A broken sentence was stammered out from my mouth in a trembling voice. With surprise and sincere pleasure, the girls welcomed my participation in the chat, one of whom even spoke her mind, “I like your incredibly soft voice!”
I smiled, knowing I finally had friends and my school life would be much happier. That night, I was just like an exploded bomb, enjoying the awesome experience talking with my friends, which I’d never had before. During the whole night, Bella kept staring at me with overwhelming ecstasy, moved for my change. However, I acknowledged that it was her that I should really be grateful to, who gave me the courage to break the ice. Now, at school, we five girls usually spent time together, studying and playing, happiness always lingering around us. Also, with their company, I attempted to make my first presentation in front of the whole class, and I did it. Thanks to my friends, especially Bella, the girl who never talked had faded away forever.
