First it was jogging. Then aerobics (有氧运动).Not too long ago,Americans discovered race walking.
Now Americans are into a new fitness craze. They're taking up bicycling.Over hills and down mountainsides and across quiet country roads,Americans are busily rolling along.
The number of adults who ride for fitness is around 17 million,an increase of 70 percent over four years ago.Twice as many women as men are coming to the sport.Americans are falling in love with biking because it has speed, the benefits of jogging and beautiful scenery.
Bicycling is a very appropriate sport, which is important to people who injured their knees while jogging or whose joints are aching from aerobics. And biking is a real awakening for people who have been into race walking in the past.Race walking is as dull as watching paint dry.
The most popular kind of bicycle for people who are new to the sport is the mountain bike, which has a fixed frame with wide tires and upright handles.
Mountain bikes also have many gears (齿轮) to make them easier to climb hills.About 5 million Americans ride mountain bikes, compared with 200,000 who rode them only five years ago.
Costs range from about $130 for a bottom-of-the-line bicycle to more than $2,700 for an expensive bicycle.
Mountain biking has attracted some people who race down the sides of mountains like a bat out of hell. But most riders ride slowly and they rarely venture far from home.
The biking craze has brought an unexpected profit(盈利) to clothing and bicycle accessory (附属品) makers.Last year, bikers paid $630 million for biking clothes and accessories.
Bicycling seems likely to continue its fantastic growth.

In the UK,there is a popular route for cyclists:the road from Land's End in England to John O'Groats in Scotland, about 874 miles long.It covers almost the full length of Great Britain. The 12-year-old boy named Laurence Chandler became the youngest cyclist to finish the route.

Chandler first thought of trying the route when he read an article about it two years ago.Later,as his father's 50th birthday came around,he decided to go for it.He was already used to cycling around his village and to school before starting his journey.

Dear Tom,
It has been a long time since I wrote to you.
In December,we had a sports meeting in our school.I participated in the 3,000-metre race.I managed to stand at the starting line for the final.Unfortunately,I fell behind others very soon.I tried to run faster, but fell down to the ground, with blood running out of my knees.I struggled to my feet and kept on running.Although I felt badly painful,I ran to the end.As you can see,I lost the match.I'm not regretful because I believe it's more important to keep to the end.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,

With my parents away on a business trip,I planned to spend a quiet weekend at home. But when my friend Chickie and Dom,invited me to join them for an afternoon at the beach,I was attracted.“I had an asthma (哮喘) attack yesterday, and it really tired me out,”I warned them.“So I'll probably just lie out on the sand.”
A few hours later, relaxing under a sun umbrella after a picnic lunch,I was glad I'd come.Chickie and Dom went for a swim. They liked to go far out into the sea.I was bathed in the sun until I got too hot, then took a walk down to the shore.
For a few minutes I just let the waves lap around my legs. The ocean was smooth as glass.I could float on my back as if I were in a swimming pool,I thought, and did.I closed my eyes and enjoyed the gentle rocking.
After some time,I opened my eyes and looked around. How did I get so far from shore?I hadn't realised how quickly the sea was carrying me.
I started swimming as quick and hard as I could.Even so I wasn't getting any closer, and it was becoming harder to breathe.I turned around, looking for help, but I seemed to be completely alone in the water.Far off on the sand I could see people packing up their belongings. It must be nearly five o'clock,I thought. That's when the lifeguard went off duty.
A wave slapped (拍打) my face and I swallowed salt water. My chest was already burning as I struggled to breathe. In desperation I raised one hand and waved it to get the lifeguard's attention.“I'll never last till he reaches me,”I thought.“They're all too far away.I can't get myself heard here and nobody even sees me!”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Fortunately, two young men happened to swim by.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Chickie and Dom were waiting anxiously on the beach._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Fortunately, two young men happened to swim by.“Help,”I managed to whisper. One of them grabbed my arm.The other grabbed his arm.Together they pulled me towards the shore. The lifeguard rushed into the water with his board. He tried to convince me that the water was shallow so that I could just stand. However,I shook my head.I was too exhausted to stand, much less walk. They laid me over the board.“You were caught in a tide,”the lifeguard said as the three of the man carried me onto the sand.
Chickie and Dom were waiting anxiously on the beach. They were scared when they saw me being carried out of the water.I showed my sincere gratitude to the two young men who saved me.And the lifeguard warned us to be careful while swimming and never swim alone.Chickie and Dom took care of me and made sure I was okay.It was a quiet reminder that one should always be careful and never underestimate the power of nature, even on a supposedly gentle day at the beach.

With my parents away on a business trip,I planned to spend a quiet weekend at home. But when my friend Chickie and Dom,invited me to join them for an afternoon at the beach,I was attracted.“I had an asthma (哮喘) attack yesterday, and it really tired me out,” I warned them.“So I'll probably just lie out on the sand.”
How did I get so far from shore I hadn't realised how quickly the sea was carrying me.
In desperation I raised one hand and waved it to get the lifeguard's attention.“I'll never last till he reaches me,” I thought.“They're all too far away.I can't get myself heard here and nobody even sees me!”

Dear Tom,
It has been a long time since I wrote to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
故选A。]
根据倒数第二段“The biking craze has brought an unexpected profit to clothing and bicycle accessory makers.”
根据第一段中的“The 12-year-old boy named Laurence Chandler became the youngest cyclist to finish the route.” 故选A。]
根据第二段中的“It was much harder than I thought.” 故选A。]
根据第三段中的“Later,as his father's 50th birthday came around,he decided to go for it.”
根据第一段中的“The 12-year-old boy named Laurence Chandler became the youngest cyclist to finish the route.”及最后一段“During his ride,Chandler raised 600 pounds for Smile Train,a children's organisation that pays for treatment for children in developing countries who have cleft lips.” 故选A。]
