Cooking and eating were such an important part of Eliza Acton’s world that I began to think of her ingredients (原料) almost as characters in some books. I looked through her cookery books, cooking from them regularly and writing lists of the ingredients she used. I often had to cook the dishes, sauces, and cakes to fully understand them. More importantly, I had to eat them very slowly. Food is about many things, particularly if you’re both cooking and eating as Eliza and her assistant were. I had to consider smell, taste, and temperature.
I kept a notebook by my side just as Eliza had and wrote down my observations of each ingredient I bought and each dish I cooked. But that was only the first step. I wanted to write a book that made readers feel so hungry that they would be impelled (迫使) to stop frequently in order to visit the fridge. So besides cooking and eating Eliza’s dishes, I had to build a vocabulary to describe them in as exciting and mouth-watering a way as possible.
Eventually I settled down to writing, drawing on my experience of cooking, smelling, tasting and reading. Whenever I struggled to describe a particular taste or smell, I would turn to my notebook for help and inspiration. This often made me feel hungry. But I decided that eating as I worked was vital to my research. So I didn’t hold back! But I made myself write a word or two down every time I ate.
I’ve since had lots of comments from early readers, saying that reading Miss Eliza’s English Kitchen made them feel very hungry. I take that as ahuge compliment, although most of the credit must go to Eliza Acton for creating recipes so rich in pleasant smell and taste.

B. She created famous food brands.
C. She valued nutrition labels of food.

A. She ate the local specials.
B She read familiar diaries.
C. She contacted Eliza by email.
D. She looked them up in her notebook,
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. My Cooking Troubles B. My Rich Experience
C. My Inspired Food Writing D. My Respectable Person

From clever tool use to complex songs many bird behaviors are known to be transmitted (传播) socially and persist across generations, which scientists define as animal “culture”. Now a study suggests culture might play a role in bird architecture (建筑艺术), too.
Researchers analyzed more than 400 structures (结构) built by 43 different groups of sparrows in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. These birds live and work together to build a nest (鸟巢) and many shelters from grass. The group’s dominant female then lays eggs in the nest, which has a long, tube-like entrance. Individual birds sleep nearby in the U-shaped shelters, which have both an entrance and an exit.
The scientists found that different gatherings of birds, even those living only a few meters from one another, built very different tube structures. “The largest diversity was in how short or long the structures are,” says study lead author Maria C. Tello-Ramos, a cognitive ecologist at the University of Hull in England, “Tube width also varied among groups.” Furthermore, when outsiders joined, they adapted to this style.
To examine why the groups built differently, the team analyzed factors that can determine a nest for a given bird species: weather conditions, tree height, individuals’ body size and genetic relatedness. Yet, the result startled the team that none of these factors seemed to play a relevant role in shaping how the Kalahari sparrows built their nests, which the researchers reported in Science.
“Okay, so what is left?” Tello-Ramos and her team explain. “Cultural transmission might be the key to nest building. In our paper, we haven’t gotten there yet with experiments, but we have very good clues that indicate the key might be it.” Christina Riehl, an evolutionary biologist at Princeton University, says, “Though there aren’t enough experiments, I think the study will inspire future research in a really good way and offers a great starting point for deeper dives into how culture shapes birds’ building behaviors.”
8. What is one routine of the birds according to paragraph 2?
A. Obeying the top female. B. Copying near by structures.
C. Building homes together. D. Sleeping at the same time.
9. What is the biggest difference in the birds’ nest structures according to Maria C. Tello-Ramos?
A. Their shapes. B. Their sizes.
C. Their importance. D. Their causes.
10. What does the underlined word “startled” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Pleased. B. Threatened. C. Shocked. D. Stopped.
11. How does Christina Riehl view the study?
A. It needs further research. B. It is backed by strong evidence.
C. It is opposite to previous studies. D. It is based on a scientist’s assumption.
D
A half dozen women, in their 30s, 40s and 50s, gather in a classroom in Phoenix for a few hours on a weekday morning. They are all caregivers of young children and participants in an Arizona state-funded initiative called Kith and Kin. The program aims to give family, friend and neighbor caregivers the kind of training that licensed (领有许可证的) caregivers are required to have.
A study in the south Phoenix area found that 60%of children from birth to 5 years old were being cared for outside of licensed child care settings. That study led the nonprofit organization Candelen to launch Kith and Kin in 1999. “There was the high need to provide both training and support in communities where families with young children live,” says program director Angela Tapia.
Now, 25 years later, programs like Kith and Kin are getting renewed attention on account of the fragile (脆弱的) state of the child care industry. There’s increased urgency from policymakers and businesses to ensure communities have access to affordable, high- quality child care, paving the way for parents, especially women, to work.
The sessions are paid for by Arizona’s government. While most federal(联邦制的)and state funding for child care industry in the U.S. goes to licensed settings, Arizona is one of a number of states that have long recognized the importance of informal caregiving arrangements that are allowing millions of parents to go to work.
Such arrangements are especially common in immigrant communities, where many parents hold jobs with nontraditional hours and prefer caregivers who share their language and culture.
Candelen estimates it trains about 1,000 caregivers a year. Melinda Gulick, CEO of Arizona’s early childhood agency First Things First, says the funding is recognition that all children, regardless of where they spend their first years, deserve a high quality early childhood experience. “For many parents, the best place for children to be is with their aunts or their grandmothers or their neighbors,” she says.
12. What can be learned about the women from paragraph 1?
A. They send children to a program. B. They receive training in child care.
C. They are founders of Kith and Kin. D. They are occupied in caring about their students.
13. What is the purpose of paragraph 2?
A. To describe the necessities of family care.
B. To show the educational challenges in Phoenix.
C. To present the requirements for licensed caregivers.
D. To offer some background on establishing Kith and Kin.
14. What is Melinda Gulick’s attitude towards Kith and Kin?
A. Approving. B. Critical. C. Uncertain. D. Puzzled.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Supporting informal child care in Arizona.
B. Federal initiatives in early childhood education.
C. Challenges faced by working women in Phoenix.
D. The decrease of licensed child care facilities in Phoenix.

Bob, from Leavenworth, Washington, is a dad of three young adults. Bob has always held the belief that learning to take care of the spaces we occupy, whether it’s our home, car or even our own body, is directly tied to our mental well-being. He thought it was important to teach young adults to maintain a house or a car to set them up for success in life. So he kept teaching his adult children basic skills like how to repair things around the house as they were growing up.
“Too often I find that young people are overwhelmed with the common daily responsibilities coming along with adulthood. I think they just need someone to sit with them and instruct them how to tackle them one thing at a time. Even as they grow up and fly the nest, they will realize their parents’ help is as essential as they were growing up, just in different ways,” Bob said.
Bob had guidance on many things, each piece of which was from his own life experiences. He taught his children one simple rule for backing up a truck—keep one hand on the bottom of the steering wheel and turn in the direction you want the truck to go. To keep a lawn (草坪) in top shape, Bob showed them how to cut in a different direction each time, so the grass won’t start to lean one way. When they’re unsure if it is time to change their tires, Bob has a practical trick using a coin to check the tire thread (螺纹). He showed all these to his children patiently.
His 18-year-old daughter Emily thought her dad did a great job of teaching things briefly, showing them that whatever is weighing on them is probably an easier solution than they think.
Then she started recording her dad giving “Dad Advice” and posting the videos on her social media account, through which she wanted to share how helpful her dad was.

【答案】参考范文:
An Exciting Environmental Knowledge Contest
Last week, our school held an exciting environmental knowledge contest, which attracted numerous participants from different grades. The contest consisted of various challenging questions related to environmental protection, testing students’ awareness and understanding of eco-friendly practices.
The atmosphere was tense yet lively as students eagerly answered the questions. It was heartening to see everyone so engaged and passionate about the environment. Personally, I found the contest extremely educational and inspiring. It not only broadened my knowledge but also reminded me of the importance of preserving our planet. Such events should be held regularly to enhance our environmental awareness.

【答案】
One day, Emily was shocked when she logged into (登录) her account. Her “Dad Advice” videos had been viewed by over five million people and her account had attracted over one million followers around the world. Many young adults who followed the account even affectionately called Bob “Dad”in their comments and expressed gratitude for his weekly advice. One user commented, “My dad died in November, and I’ve been wanting so badly to ask him how to get the lines in my lawn.” “Emily, thank you for sharing your dad’s advice with us. Bob, thank you for being our ‘dad’,” another user commented. They expressed that tips from “Dad Advice” videos benefited them a lot.
Becoming a “dad” figure to millions, Bob was greatly motivated. With the help of Emily, he continued to share videos on tips and tricks to navigate young adults in their daily life. Instead of updating one “Dad Advice” video per week, they produced more videos a week. Besides the topic of daily repairs, Bob’s videos gradually covered the topics of financial advice and even mental health tips to young adults, or those that their followers requested. Bob enjoyed being able to help by teaching what he knows how to do. Bob said his goal was to help more young people feel confident as they set up for their life.
