In 1957,a group of physicists gathered in a lecture hall at Princeton University to be addressed by a Chinese American woman. As she told the crowd about her recent experiment and its results, the response was dead silence for two minutes, and then a thunderous applause continued for ten minutes. The woman was Chien-Shiung Wu,known as the First Lady of Physics, who transformed nuclear science through her work on the Manhattan Project and other groundbreaking experiments.
Born in 1912 near Shanghai,China,Wu was influenced by her father,an engineer, and her mother,an educator.Unlike many Chinese women of her time, she received a formal education.Fascinated by new discoveries and the story of women scientists like Marie Curie, she entered National Central University to study physics and then began her scientific studies.
It was a time of rapid change in both the field of physics and China.Domestic unrest and a bad relationship with Japan made life at home uneasy. With the help of an uncle, she immigrated to the United States for graduate school.
Wu planned to go to the University of Michigan, but a tour of the University of California,Berkeley—and word that a student center at Michigan did not allow female students to enter through the front door—changed her mind.At Berkeley,Wu was visible for her gender and race, and from the start her male colleagues commented as much on her physical appearance as her keen mind. She quickly gained a reputation and became an expert in the newly discovered phenomenon of nuclear fission(核裂变).
After graduation, she headed to Smith College to teach women physics.During World War Ⅱ,Wu went to Princeton University, where she became the physics department’s first female instructor. But shortly after her arrival, her career took an unexpected turn in 1944.She ended up joining the staff at Columbia University on a top-secret research program now known as the Manhattan Project.

Struggling to give up meat and move to a vegetarian diet Your genes could be to blame, scientists suspect.A study suggests that genetics plays a role in whether people can stick to a strict vegetarian diet. While deciding to quit meat may be a personal lifestyle choice, based on religious and moral considerations, genetics can make it harder or easier for some people.
“Are all humans capable of existing long term on a strict vegetarian diet This is a question that has not been seriously studied,” said study author Dr Nabeel Yaseen.“There is something that people may be missing.”
“One area where plant products differ from meat is complex lipids (fats). There may be lipid components present in meat that some people need. And maybe people whose genetics favour vegetarianism are able to synthesise(合成) these components.”
Experts compared UK Biobank genetic data from 5,324 strict vegetarians who avoided fish, poultry and red meat,to 329,44 people who were omnivorous(杂食的).They found three genes that were significantly associated with vegetarianism and another 31 genes that are potentially associated.Several of these genes, including two of the top three, were involved in lipid (fat) metabolism(新陈代谢) and brain function. It has led experts to believe that people who find a vegetarian diet easy to follow may be able to synthesise these important fats from elsewhere.According to the Vegetarian Society,4.5 percent of the British population follow a vegetarian or vegan diet.
Scientists say that often the driving force behind why people choose certain foods is not just taste but how well the body metabolises products.Dr Yaseen believes there may be something in meat that most people struggle to do without.“Perhaps you have a certain component—maybe a lipid component—that makes you need and long for it,” he added.
The experts believe the findings open the door to creating better meat substitutes as well as tailoring dietary recommendations to personal genetics.
28.Why does the author mention the question raised by Dr Yaseen in paragraph 2
A.To emphasise its significance.
B.To draw wide attention.
C.To uncover something overlooked.
D.To lead in the topic.
29.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.The process involved.
B.The approach adopted.
C.The data gathered.
D.The conclusion drawn.
30.What does the underlined word “it” probably refer to in paragraph 5
A.The driving force. B.A certain food.
C.A lipid component. D.Meat.
31.What is the best title for the text

Given that stress can adversely affect human health and well-being,including causing high blood pressure and increasing the risk of heart disease,it is essential to understand our individual responses to stress and identify potential factors that can act as effective stress buffers(缓冲).
In the paper, which was recently published in the Journal of Psychophysiology,Brian Leavy,Brenda H.O’Connell, and Deirdre O’Shea propose that although the previous research suggests that gratitude and affective balance play key stress-buffering roles,to date, little has been known about the impact of these variables on cardiovascular(心血管的) recovery from acute(急性的) psychological stress.
That was the focus of the study by the researchers from the Universities of Maynooth and Limerick in Ireland, who also sought to find out whether affective balance could regulate the relationship between gratitude and cardiovascular reactions to acute psychological stress.
The research carried out at the Irish University of Maynooth involved 68 undergraduate students (24 male and 44 female),aged between 18 and 27.This study used a within-subjects experimental design with lab tasks in which stress was put on participants and then cardiovascular reactivity and recovery in response to this was measured.
The results showed that the state of gratitude predicted lower blood pressure responses throughout the stress-testing period, which means that the state of gratitude has a unique stress-buffering effect on both reactions to and recovery from acute psychological stress. It was also found that affective balance increases the effects of gratitude.
These findings have practical value as there are several low-cost gratitude methods which can contribute to well-being,including keeping a gratitude journal and practising acts of kindness.Previous research has shown how patients who make use of gratitude journals have better cardiovascular outcomes than those who do not.Another tool to help individuals express gratitude is a gratitude card, which is one of the suggestions from Mental Health America (MHA).
32.What does the underlined word “adversely” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Unfavorably. B.Creatively.
C.Barely. D.Fortunately.
33.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.A new concept.
B.The process of an experiment.
C.The problems of an expert’s research.
D.The focus of a study.
34.Which is a finding of the research
A.The effects of gratitude are often age-related.
B.Gratitude contributes to lower blood pressure.
C.Affective balance reduces the effects of gratitude.
D.Acute psychological stress is difficult to relieve.
35.What can we learn from the text
A.The results of the study are not reliable.
B.The methods of gratitude come at a high cost.
C.MHA’s advice is confirmed effective by the research.
D.The researchers have proposed new ways to express gratitude.

Today’s Wonder of the Day comes in all shapes and sizes. It can look like a beautiful landscape,a familiar skyline,or even outer space! It comes in boxes labeled with numbers—300, 500, 1,000,or even 2,500.What are we talking about Jigsaw puzzles(拼图游戏),of course!
Puzzles have been around since at least 1760.Today,though,the process of making jigsaw puzzles has changed quite a bit. 36 They used jigsaws to cut each piece out of wood or cardboard. Some specialty puzzle makers still do so today, but it’s far less common.Instead, most puzzles are mass-produced.
How exactly are modern puzzles made It starts with choosing the right picture. 37 The most popular puzzles are often full of details. After all, this makes them quite a bit more manageable—imagine working on a puzzle that is just one color or pattern!
Once the image is chosen,it’s printed on special paper and pasted to cardboard. Then, they’re left to dry before going through the die cutter(模切机). 38 The design of the die cutter is unique to each puzzle and is often drawn by hand.Later, they go through a machine that separates them. 39
Of course, puzzles aren’t just for fun! They’re good for your brain.Experts say putting together a puzzle has the same effect as trying to solve a mystery. It can stimulate different brain areas. 40 It feels great to place that last piece in the right spot.Maybe that’s why puzzles seem to be a timeless source of entertainment.
A.Working on a puzzle can also reduce stress.
B.Decades ago, people made puzzles by hand.
C.Finally, they’re boxed up and made ready for sale.
D.Not every piece of beautiful artwork can make the cut.
E.Puzzles offer an affordable way for people to have fun.

A_Scientist_in_China
The scientist in China who impresses me most is Yuan Longping, the “father of hybrid rice”.
As one of China’s most famous scientists,Yuan devoted himself to studying agriculture. His hybrid strains have helped feed not just China, but many other countries that depend on rice as well.He received numerous awards, but he cared little for celebrity or money.Instead,he made large donations to support agricultural research.
Yuan’s great contributions to human beings and his noble personality impress me deeply, which will motivate me to be excellent.

语篇解读 这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了无法放弃肉类可能与基因有关。

Given that stress can adversely affect human health and well-being,including causing high blood pressure and increasing the risk of heart disease,it is essential to understand our individual responses to stress and identify potential factors that can act as effective stress buffers(缓冲).
语篇解读 本文是一篇说明文。一项研究表明,感恩状态和情感平衡对急性心理压力的反应和恢复有独特的压力缓冲作用。

Over the next few weeks,Emma devoted her time and energy to caring for the deer. She visited it every day after school, bringing fresh fruit and vegetables. She carefully examined its wounds, applying some medicine to help it get better and prevent infection. As the days went by,the deer began to regain its strength, and Emma was overjoyed to see it stand on its legs once again.

As the weeks turned into months,Emma watched as the deer grew stronger and more confident. It would often follow her around the backyard, nudging(轻推) her playfully with its nose.Emma felt a deep sense of satisfaction knowing that she had played a part in saving this beautiful creature’s life.
One sunny afternoon,as Emma sat in her backyard reading a book, she heard a familiar sound. She looked up and saw the deer standing near her, looking at her with gentle eyes.It was clear that the deer had fully recovered and was ready to return to the wild.
