It’s possible that Chris Raven is the only person in the UK making baroque flutes(长笛).But far from having a lifetime of making instruments behind him,he started out at 70,after decades of working in IT.He turns 80 in a month.Yet,in childhood,he loved woodwork. As he says,“You can plant a seed in a child’s mind. And the seed stays.”
Raven grew up in a musical household,in Chelmsford,Essex.Raven played the flute until he lost interest as a teenager. But he rediscovered his love of the instrument in his 40s when he won lessons at his daughter’s school fundraiser.Twenty years ago,he founded a flute choir.
It was after his mother died that he found his old school reports in his parents’ desk. But when he read his old reports,he was taken aback.“The two subjects that I did consistently well at—which nobody seemed to spot at the time—were music and woodwork,” he says.“I made stuff as a child and I was good at it.” Rather than feeling minded to look back and wonder if he might have made different career decisions,Raven’s discovery was more a case of him noticing his gift,he says.
About 10 years ago,Raven signed up for an Irish flute-making workshop, followed by a baroque flute-making workshop. He cleared out the garage of the home, and equipped it with various tools to make flutes. His childhood passion “was revived” in baroque flutes and flute boxes.
“It’s been all-consuming,” he says.He spends at least four days a week on his own in the workshop.“Flute making,as well as box making,is not a living so much as a hobby,” says Raven.“I feel real passion and more creation about a new design.”
24.How long has Raven been a flute maker
A.For his whole life.
B.Since ten years ago.
C.Since his childhood.
D.For several decades.
25.How did Raven’s old school reports influence him

A.He feels stuck in his career.
B.He works for an Irish workshop.
C.He gets some helpers in his work.
D.He unites his two passions after 70.

Humans are not the animal kingdom’s only fashionistas.Tits(山雀) can be fashion followers, too, apparently.A latest study shows that, given the chance, they decorate their nests with this season’s must-have colour.
Dr.Wild and Dr.Aplin were following up on a study published in 1934 by Henry Smith Williams,an American naturalist. He noticed that when he put various coloured balls of yarn(纱) out in his garden, almost always one and only one became popular that season for being included into local birds’ nests. But which particular color was favoured varied from season to season. This suggested that the colour chosen by one of the early birds was spotted and copied by others.
Williams’s work was, however, forgotten until they came across it while following up on a different study, published by a team at the University of Toulouse, suggesting fashion-following,too.Dr.Wild and Dr.Aplin therefore set out to re-run Williams’s experiment, but this time to collect some actual numbers.
The birds they followed were part of a well-monitored population of blue tits in a wood near the institute. Most birds in this wood carried tracking devices fitted to them after their capture in mist nets. That allowed the institute’s researchers to keep track of a vast number of individuals by recording their arrival at food containers throughout the wood.Instead of food, these containers were loaded with wool of different colors.Interestingly, researchers soon found that most nests of blue tits included only the color of the wool first chosen by a nestbuilder.
Tits, then,do seem to be “on trend”,when it comes to nest-building materials. Why that should happen remains obscure.Dr.Wild and Dr.Aplin suspect the fashion leaders are older birds, and that evolution favours younger ones copying their elders since those elders have evidently survived what fortune has to throw at a tit.Williams’s original work, though, suggests such initial choices are at random—a bit like those of the leaders of human fashions.
28.What can we learn from paragraph 2
A.Dr.Wild and Dr.Aplin contributed to Williams’s work.
B.Early birds’ color preference was copied by their fellows.
C.The yarn was the most popular material to decorate local birds’ nests.
D.The color of the yarn favored by local birds was fixed throughout the year.
29.How did Dr.Wild and Dr.Aplin improve Williams’s experiment
A.They observed the blue tits.
B.They studied the habits of blue tits.
C.They adopted the data-collecting method.
D.They fitted tracking devices to food containers.
30.What does the underlined word “obscure” in paragraph 5 mean
A.Hidden. B.Evident.
C.Complicated. D.Shallow.
31.What is the main idea of the text
A.Birds favor certain colors in decoration.
B.Young birds follow their elders in fashion.
C.Young birds are just as intelligent as people.
D.Birds are just as fashion-conscious as people.

Heat impacts on food production now regularly present themselves.
“We have been worried about this for years, saying the issue was going to get worse—now it is,” says Zitouni Ould-Dada,deputy director in the Office of Climate Change,Biodiversity and Environment at the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).“Crops need a norm(常态);any changes or disturbance to cycles will lead to negative impacts. Some crops simply won’t grow in certain areas any more.Drought affects the quality of the soil, the minerals, and the productivity of the plant.”
Research shows that yields of some crops, such as maize and wheat in many lower-latitude regions, have already been affected by climate change. However, yields of maize, wheat and sugar beet in higher latitudes have been affected positively in recent decades.“Some crops are more tolerant of heat but, over time,if these temperatures become the norm, and are followed by extremely high heat on occasion, all crops will eventually get affected,” Ould-Dada warns.
Heat impacts are not only limited to food production.Smaller yields and changing growing zones could lead to greater use of fertilisers and water, and the further loss of biodiversity.Domestic animals are just as vulnerable(易受……伤害的) to heat stress, with knock-on impacts on cattle raised for meat and dairy animals.Meanwhile, fisheries and aquaculture(水产养殖业) face issues around warmer waters and acidification.
“A heating world,” says Ould-Dada,“is forcing us to rethink how we produce food, process it and store it.” The key message, argues Ould-Dada,is for farmers to exchange best practice and diversify:if one crop falls to heat, another may grow.Besides, farmers could be creative, for example,by installing solar panels in fields;plants benefit from shade and the panels generate(产生) electricity and gather rainwater.“Food production itself will cause the emission of CO2.We have to do this in a way that benefits nature, the livelihoods of farmers and local communities,” adds Ould-Dada.
32.What effect does heat have on food production according to the passage
A.The overall yields of food have not been affected.
B.The output of certain crops in lower latitudes has increased.
C.Some crops are not likely to adapt to certain areas any more.
D.Some crops more tolerant of heat won’t get affected over time.
33.What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph
A.Further heat impacts.
B.Heat impacts on food production.
C.The loss of biodiversity.
D.Issues on fisheries and aquaculture.
34.What is the key to dealing with heat impacts on food production
A.Creating new plant species.
B.Sharing methods and growing diverse crops.
C.Installing solar panels in fields.
D.Processing and storing food.
35.What can be inferred from Ould-Dada’s words in the last paragraph
A.Farmers need to put theory into practice in time.
B.We had better take environment-friendly measures.
C.A heating world is pushing us to produce healthy food.
D.Food production is merely to blame for climate change.

Tips on Learning Math
While you are sitting in a math class listening to your teacher multiplying(乘以) and adding endless numbers, math can become boring and uninteresting quickly. 36 Here are some tips that can help you.
Learn math tricks. There are many tricks in math that save you enormous time. For example, adding up all the numbers from 1 to 100 is a lot of work. But,check out this easy way to do it:100+1=101 and 99+2=101,right So does 98+3,97+4,96+5,etc.So,if you multiply 101 by the number of these pairs, you’ll get the sum of all the numbers from 1 to 100,which is 5050. 37
Make math easy.Math can be difficult to learn because students are often taught to learn math by memorizing formulas. However,by learning math this way, students aren’t taught the principles and concepts. But the principles and concepts are needed to understand why a particular formula is being used. 38 You can ask your teacher why and how a particular formula works, while others do not.
39 For example,if you’re interested in historical landmarks, learn about the math involved in building these landmarks.
Connect math to everyday life. 40 For example,if you have an alarm clock, chances are that you will figure out how many extra minutes you can sleep before you get out of bed once you hit the snooze button(贪睡按钮).Try to notice the different ways you do math in your day-to-day tasks.
A.They are often interesting,too.
B.So make math easier by learning them.
C.Make math fun by using it in the real world.
D.Try solving some math competition problems.
E.Explore how math is related to something that you love.
F.By doing so,you can find a way out of doing extra work.
G.However, you can beat the boredom by making math meaningful to you.

How a Powerful Dream Taught Me to Respect My Sister
It was Friday about 4:15 pm.I had just gotten back from school;I sat down on a table to do my homework.“Hi,Mom.” “Daniela,I need to talk with you.” “About what?” “Your dad and I have been thinking really hard about this, and you are getting a new sister.” “What, but what about me?” I asked.“I don’t want a sister.Don’t you love me?” “Yes,but...”
Without letting her finish,I rushed to my room crying.I closed my door and went to my bed.I had so much anger that I threw my glass cup on the floor.“What happened here?” Mom asked to herself. My mom came in a few minutes later. She said that the way I was acting wasn’t the right way to act.My mom started talking about how my new sister was having a really hard time. She said that her parents had unfortunately died in an earthquake,so she had to go to a foster(寄养的) home.A few days later, she got adopted(领养) by a family who treated her badly. They didn’t give her enough food or water and she had to do all the housework until one day she got tired of being treated poorly and escaped to a shelter, and that is where they found her.But whatever she said,I just couldn’t agree.
That night I had a terrible dream.I dreamed an earthquake happened and when the shaking stopped,my house and parents were nowhere to see.I became homeless and was brought to a farm, staying there with a horrible woman who never gave me food.Later I found an opportunity to run away from the farm. Then the woman ran after me and I ran harder till suddenly I opened my eyes, finding myself still on the bed.“OMG! What just happened?” I asked myself, full of fear.

2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。

Recently our class had a heated discussion about the Winter Morning Jogging Activity in our school.Views are divided on this topic.
64% of the students voted for the activity. They think that the activity can inspire our desire to study as well as assuring our physical health.Oppositely, nearly one third were against it owing to the cold weather and heavy schoolwork.
As far as I’m concerned, this activity should be carried out, because it’s an ideal way to relieve stress and give us the power to defend ourselves against tension and anxiety.
第二节 参考范文
The dream changed me and I started to reflect on myself. There is no doubt that we are supposed to help those who are in trouble. The disaster is merciless, but there is love in the world. My new sister survived the earthquake, during which she lost her loved parents. What was worse, she was treated badly in the foster family, resulting in the terrible and desperate situation.Faced with her sufferings,I shouldn’t be so selfish to reject her coming.Deeply realizing what I did was completely wrong,I apologized to my parents.
The next morning Dad drove alone to the shelter and brought my new sister home. She received a warm and enthusiastic welcome from our family. My mom prepared a big and delicious dinner. After enjoying the dinner,I shared my toys with my new sister, playing with her with enthusiasm. The poor girl was moved to tears, saying no words.Instead she hugged each of us tightly. My parents felt extremely proud of what I had done.(共106张PPT)

语篇解读 本文是新闻报道。文章主要讲述了拉文在70岁的时候重新喜欢上了制作长笛和长笛盒。

Humans are not the animal kingdom’s only fashionistas.Tits(山雀) can be fashion followers, too, apparently.A latest study shows that, given the chance, they decorate their nests with this season’s must-have colour.
语篇解读 本文是一篇说明文。人类并不是动物界唯一的时尚达人。研究表明,山雀也像人类一样追随潮流,用流行色装点巢穴。
D.The color of the yarn favored by local birds was fixed throughout the
year.

29.How did Dr.Wild and Dr.Aplin improve Williams’s experiment
A.They observed the blue tits.
B.They studied the habits of blue tits.
C.They adopted the data-collecting method.

Heat impacts on food production now regularly present themselves.
“We have been worried about this for years, saying the issue was going to get worse—now it is,” says Zitouni Ould-Dada,deputy director in the Office of Climate Change,Biodiversity and Environment at the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
语篇解读 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了全球变暖对农业生产的影响及应对策略。
“Crops need a norm(常态);any changes or disturbance to cycles will lead to negative impacts.

细节理解题。根据第二段中“Crops need a norm(常态);any changes or disturbance to cycles will lead to negative impacts. Some crops simply won’t grow in certain areas any more.Drought affects the quality of the soil, the minerals, and the productivity of the plant.”可知,由于高温,某些作物已无法再适应某些地区的生长条件。故选C。

解析
34.What is the key to dealing with heat impacts on food production
A.Creating new plant species.
B.Sharing methods and growing diverse crops.
C.Installing solar panels in fields.
D.Processing and storing food.

细节理解题。根据最后一段中“The key message, argues Ould-Dada,is for farmers to exchange best practice and diversify:if one crop falls to heat, another may grow.”可知,应对热效应的关键在于农民要分享方法和种植多样化的农作物。故选B。
解析
35.What can be inferred from Ould-Dada’s words in the last paragraph
A.Farmers need to put theory into practice in time.
B.We had better take environment-friendly measures.
C.A heating world is pushing us to produce healthy food.
D.Food production is merely to blame for climate change.

推理判断题。根据最后一段中“We have to do this in a way that benefits nature, the livelihoods of farmers and local communities”可推断出,我们最好采取环保措施。故选B。

My parents felt extremely proud of what I had done.
