When you are learning English, you’ll find it not clever to put an English sentence word by word into your own language. Take the sentence “How do you do ” for example. If you look up each word in the dictionary, then what is your translation It must be a wrong sentence in your own language.
Languages not only have different sounds, they are also different in many ways. It’s important to master the rules of word order (顺序) in the study of English, too. If the speakers put words in the wrong order, the listeners can’t understand the speaker’s sentences easily. Sometimes when the order of words in an English sentence changes, the meaning of the sentence changes, too. But sometimes when the order is changed, the meaning of the sentence doesn’t change. Let’s see the difference between the two pairs of sentences.
“She only likes apples.” “Only she likes apples.”
“I have seen the film already.” “I have already seen the film.”

How to be a good listener!
As students, we should listen carefully in class. Listening needs us to pay attention and think about what we hear. 5 Here are some useful tips for you to follow.
Be prepared for class. Before class starts, we should review our notes from the last class, and think about how much we know about today’s topic. When it’s time to go to class, check if we have taken all the things needed. 6
Listen with a purpose. 7 If you are clear about the problems you wish to solve in class, you may listen to them, carefully as teachers explain.
Pay attention to teachers’ body language. Lots of communication is not from talking. The body language also carries information. 8 When the teacher points to the blackboard and raises the voice, we should realize that this is the key one.
Take good notes. Taking notes is another good way to pay attention in class. But not everyone can take a good one. Here are some examples. It is much clearer if we keep our notes organized by subject. 9 Writing the date at the top of each page is helpful for the later review.
In a word, class is the key period for every student. We should make good use of it and try to become an excellent listener in class.

Have you ever wondered why you go over a book again and again and still feel lost when tested on what you’ve read It may be because you haven’t practiced retrieval (检索). Retrieval practice is a useful way to help us learn.
Some of us remember best by listening, some by re-reading, and others learn best by using pictures and diagrams (图表). Schools try many of these different ways to help students “download” new information.
A recent study from Purdue University, the US, shows that successful learning means being able to recall information at any moment. “Our view is that learning is not about studying or getting knowledge in memory,” said Jeffrey Karpicke, the lead researcher. “Learning is about retrieving important information at any moment. So it is important to make retrieval practice an important part of the learning process.”
The research studied two groups of students. Both groups learned something from a text. One group made diagrams about the text. This method is called concept mapping (概念构图). The other group practiced retrieval. They put the text away after learning it and practiced freely recalling the concepts from the text. Then, both groups were tested on the information they had learned. Both groups did well in recalling the learned information. However, when they were asked to return one week later, the group who practiced retrieval scored higher than the group who made diagrams. So by practicing retrieval, we are able to recall information far better, which will help us study better.
Our mind, just like our body, has to practice proper activities to become good at retrieving information.

A.Each group got the same score in the later test.
B.Retrieval practice is better for recalling information.
C.Concept mapping is the best learning method for all people.
D.There’s a close relationship between listening and reading.
13.What would be the best structure (结构) of the passage

Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork. 14 But unluckily, most students don’t know how to take notes.
★Write down key facts. If your teacher writes notes on the blackboard, that’s great. You can copy them or write down the most important facts of all in class. 15 For example, some teachers may focus on (关注) lots of dates and facts in class, but they only write the important ones on the blackboard. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may say something important again and again.
★Ask. 16 If your teacher speaks too fast and you can’t follow what he is saying, you can ask him after class.
★paring your notes with your classmates’ can be good for your learning. It can also help you and your classmates correct (纠正) some mistakes.
★Organize. 17 Keep notes for each subject in one notebook, so that you can find everything easily when a test comes.
18 If you decide to recopy your notes every evening, you’ll surely have less time to watch TV. But you’ll save time in the coming test.
A.Good note-taking takes time.
B.All teachers like writing something on the blackboard.
C.Note-taking also needs organization.
D.Different teachers do things differently.

I am a reporter of China Daily. Today, I decide to write about some challenges when trying to learn just a little Putonghua.
When I remember words in pinyin, I’m amazed that most of the words are no more than four letters. The simplicity makes a lot of words seem analogous, but in fact, they’re not. Even the same word may have 20 different meanings, not to mention the changes created by the four tones (音调)!
Another thing about pinyin is that an English speaker can pronounce most of the sounds just as he or she would speak English. But when he or she meets “he” (huh) or “zi” (zuh) or “qi” (chee), it becomes difficult. Don’t even try those words if you can’t pronounce them well.
In the newsroom, I try to learn the Chinese that I usually hear: tou ban (page 1), hao le (it’s done), fa le ba (send it). My goal is to not cause lots of laughter when I try something in Chinese, but let the Chinese listener guess the pronunciation after a three-to-four-second stop.
I also find an interesting thing. An English speaker can learn Putonghua well, but he or she may not understand Cantonese (广东话). Sure, people from New York, Boston, Chicago and Atlanta all have different accents (口音), but we can understand each other for the most part.
19.The underlined word “analogous” means “________” in Paragraph 2.
A.loud B.boring C.similar D.same
20.Which of the following is TRUE
A.Most of the words are no more than four letters in pinyin.
B.A word has only one meaning and tone in Putonghua.
C.An English speaker can understand Cantonese well if he or she can speak Putonghua.
D.The reporter believes pronouncing “he” or “zi” or “qi” is easy for English speakers.
21.What’s the best title for the passage
A.Reasons for Learning Putonghua B.Making My Way to Putonghua
C.Teaching Others to Learn Putonghua D.Suggestions on Learning Putonghua

How do foreign students learn Chinese Just like Chinese students learn English, many foreign students find it hard to learn Chinese. But they have their own ways to make learning easier.
Lisa, a 16-year-old student from the US, has been learning Chinese for two years. “I love Chinese food, so I learn Chinese by watching cooking videos,” she said. “When I watch videos about making dumplings or noodles, I write down the words I don’t know, like ‘dough’ (面团) or ‘fillings’ (馅料). This way, I can remember new words while doing something I like.”
Mark, from Australia, uses Chinese apps to practice. “I use an app called ‘HelloChinese’ every day. It has short lessons on pinyin, characters and dialogues. The app also lets me talk with native speakers, which helps my spoken Chinese a lot,” he said. Mark also likes to sing Chinese songs. “Singing helps me remember tones (声调) better. I can sing ‘Mo Li Hua’ (Jasmine Flower) perfectly now!”
For David, from Canada, the best way is to live with a Chinese family. “I stay with a family in Beijing. Every day, I talk with them about school, food and daily life. They correct my mistakes and teach me slang (俚语) that I can’t learn from books. I also celebrate festivals with them, like Spring Festival. It’s not just learning Chinese—it’s learning the culture too,” David said.

How to Improve Your English Writing Skills
Do you want to write better English essays or diaries Here are three practical tips from English teachers:
1. Read more to write better. Reading helps you learn new words, sentence structures and writing styles. Try to read English articles, stories or even news every day — start with short ones if you’re a beginner. When you find a good sentence, copy it in a notebook. This way, you can use it in your own writing later.
2. Practice writing every day. You don’t need to write a long passage. Even a 50-word diary entry works! For example, you can write about your day: “Today I practiced English listening for 20 minutes. I found it a little hard, but I will keep trying.” Writing regularly helps you get used to expressing ideas in English and reduces mistakes.
3. Ask for feedback. Show your writing to your teacher or a friend who is good at English. They can point out your mistakes (like grammar errors or wrong word choices) and give suggestions. Don’t be afraid of criticism — it’s the best way to improve. You can also use online tools to check your spelling and grammar.
Remember, improving writing takes time and patience. Keep practicing, and you’ll see progress soon!

D.Translate it into Chinese.
62.How long does the writer suggest writing every day for beginners
A.At least 20 minutes. B.About 50 words.
C.A long passage. D.One English essay.
How can you hear a lot of English when you’re not in an English-speaking country or a family
You can listen to the English language radio in most countries. Two of the best radio stations are the BBC World Service and the Voice of America. 63 You can find information about times and frequencies (频率) for your country on the Internet.
To be able to listen to the radio on the Internet, you’ll need to have a special program called “player” installed (安装) in your computer. Most people use two players—the Real Player and the Windows Media Player. Don’t worry. 64 And you may already have them installed in your computer.
Songs in English are everywhere, even on foreign-language radio and TV stations. Listen to them often. But choose the ones that are not too difficult. 65 Some pop songs are very unclear and are difficult to understand!
Many cities have cinemas that show films in English, usually with subtitles (字幕). 66 If you need to read the subtitles, at least you’ll be hearing English even if you don’t understand it.
Try to make friends with English-speaking people so that you can practice your English through conversation. 67 And if you don’t have a lot of time to go out and meet people at least you can talk a little by telephone.
A.Both these players are free.
B.Make it a habit to go to see the movies.

G.And very soon you made progress without even thinking about it.
People love being polite. You might have noticed we are always saying “please” “thank you”, “excuse me” and “sorry” .
When making a request, you ask someone to do something for you. ________ Sometimes, you might make a request, and that request can be difficult for the other person to do. So it is necessary to make sure that you are being polite when making a request.
To do this, you might include some words such as “can” “could” or “please” to soften (使温和) your approach. They may make it look like you are asking a question instead of making a request. For example, if you are in a restaurant and say “I want the bill (账单)” to the waiter, your request is very direct. You might use this kind of language if you are angry or have had very bad service. So you might consider speaking like this:
“Can I have the bill, please ”
“Could I possibly have the bill, please ”
We can also use polite language to ask for permission (准许). For example, just sitting down next to someone without asking might be considered a bit forward (鲁莽的). Then you can ask for permission first like: “Would it be OK if I sat here ” “Do you mind if I sit here ”
68.What is the best sentence for “________”
A.However, it may sound like a bad idea.
B.However, it may not help them in any way.
C.However, it may hurt other people’s feelings.
D.However, it may start a fight between two friends.
69.What does the underlined word “approach”in Paragraph 3 mean in Chinese
A.方向 B.建议 C.态度 D.任务
70.How does the writer show us how to ask for permission
A.By making a joke. B.By giving examples.

She thinks that hard work is not enough for middle school students. She says, “Students have more subjects now. They should learn in many different ways. The more you use new words, the better you can remember them. For example, making sentences with new words is an effective way to learn.”
Chen Xiping, 13, from Shandong, has his own way of learning English. “I study hard in school, and I also like watching TV. On some TV channels, I always see the English words from my textbook,” says Chen. “It’s really useful.”

As we know, it is not enough to just ask a question correctly. We also need to learn how to be polite when we ask for help.
Good speakers change the way they speak in different situations. The expressions they use might depend on whom they are speaking to or how well they know each other. It is all right to ask direct questions to your classmates because you know them well. However, if you say to your teacher, “When is the school trip ”, this might sound impolite. But if you say, “Excuse me, Mr. West. Do you know when the school trip is ”, this will sound much more polite.
Usually polite questions are longer. Sometimes we even need to spend time leading into a request. It might seem more difficult to speak politely than directly but it is important to learn how to use the right language in different situations. This will help you communicate better with other people.
76.It is necessary to use some ________ questions when we need other’s help.
A.polite B.impolite C.direct D.politely
77.It is all right to ask direct questions to your classmates because ________.

You’ve been learning words since you were a tiny baby. At first, you learned them only by hearing other people talk. Now that you’re a reader, you have another way to learn words. What should you do when you come to a word and you think you don’t know what it means 81
★Say it.
First sound it out. Then say it to yourself. 82 Sometimes you know a word in your head but you don’t know what it looks like in print. So if you match up what you know and what you read, you will have the word!
★Use the context.
If this doesn’t work, take the next step: look at the context—the other words and sentences around it. Read this sentence: When it rained, the dog looked for a shelter in the doorway. 83 Rain and in the doorway might give you helpful information.
★ 84
If the context doesn’t help, look at the parts of the word. Does it have any parts you know These can help you understand what it means. If you don’t know the meaning of miner, try looking at parts of the word. You might know that a mine is a place underground where people get coal and other valuable things. A lot of times, -er at the end of a word means “a person who does something”. So a miner might be someone who works in a mine.
★Look it up.
If the three steps above don’t work, you can look it up. 85 —either a book or online. Nobody knows the meaning of every word, but good readers know how to understand words they don’t know.
A.Use word parts.
B.Look at the words.
C.It might sound like a word you know.
D.You can find the word in a dictionary
E.Following some easy steps can help you.
F.If the word “shelter” doesn’t look familiar, look at the words around it.
请阅读下面语篇,根据其内容,从所给的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,使其意思通顺,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有一项为多余项。
How to Be a Successful Language Learner
“Learning a language is easy. Even a child can do it!”
Most adults who are learning a second language would disagree with this statement (陈述). 86 They need hundreds of hours of study and practice.
Language learning is different from other kinds of learning. 87 Language learning research shows that successful language learners are similar in many ways.
First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher. 88 They try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues (线索). When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from their mistakes.
Successful language learning is active learning. Successful learners find people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. 89 They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things; they are willing to make mistakes and try again. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word.
Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. 90 That’s because they want to learn it.
阅读短文,从六个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项。
A.But what does a successful language learner do
B.They would feel sad learning the language.
C.They discover their own way to learn the language.
D.They find it easy to practice using the language regularly.
E.Learning a language is very difficult for them.
F.They will try anything to communicate.
