The Chinese language is different from Western languages in that, instead of an alphabet (字母表), it uses characters which stand for ideas, objects or deeds. Chinese words are formed by putting together different characters. In many cases, a single character can also make up a word. As one kind of the most ancient characters, Chinese characters (汉字) have played an important role in the development of Chinese culture.
Chinese writing began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, a man named Cang Jie invented Chinese writing. One winter day while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of animals in the snow and noticed that the appearance of each one was different. Then he had the idea that he could use different shapes to represent different objects. The first Chinese characters were drawings of physical objects. Some characters have been simplified (简化) and others have been made more difficult over time.
However, as a whole, the characters have developed from drawings into standard (标准) forms. The character for a mountain was at first three mountaintops together. This became one mountaintop and three lines, and over time turned into the character used nowadays.
Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by adding two or more characters together. For example, “休” was made up of the characters for a man and a tree. The character “囚” was formed with a “man” inside a square. Other characters were developed for directions and numbers. It is easy to distinguish (区别) their meanings by looking at them, for example, the characters for “up” and “down”, which are opposites of each other.
Though these kinds of characters express meanings, one of their shortcomings is that they do not show how they should be pronounced. Therefore, a method was developed to have one part of a character show the meaning and the other suggest the pronunciation. Many Chinese characters used today were made this way.
In the 1950s, the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters in order to make learning to read and write more understandable to the general population, which would increase literacy (读写能力) across the country. And now they have widespread use in China’s mainland.

When it comes to learning a foreign language, most people would choose English. Millions of people born in non-English speaking countries learn it just from textbooks and spend hours studying English grammar. However, these are the wrong ways to learn English. Let’s look at some good ways.
English media such as music, videos and TV shows are helpful. I come from a small country in Europe. When I was a little boy, there were few local TV shows or songs in my hometown. So my friends and I almost only watched English TV shows and listened to English songs. This, along with the courses we were taking at school, helped speed up our process of learning English.
Start making conversations in English when you can understand what you hear. While it may seem strange at first, but it would get more natural if you stick to it. I spent a lot of time talking with my friends in English. When we finished primary school we could speak English fluently (流利地).
I learned three other languages when I was in college. Now I can confidently say that the only way to truly master a language is to live as though the language were your mother tongue (语言). So just forget about your textbooks and try acting like you live outside of China. Find ways to expose (使接触) yourself to English as much as possible. It will not only make you a better learner but also give you a fresh view of the language.
11.Is spending hours studying English grammar wrong
12.Why did the writer almost only watch English TV shows or listen to English songs when he was a little boy
13.When did the writer learn the other three languages
14.If you have problems learning English, how are you going to improve your English (about 30 words)
从以下选项中选出符合各段意思的小标题。选项中有一项是多余项。
A.Study regularly. B.Treat tests properly. C. Find a good place to study. D.Enjoy a colorful social life. E. Make good use of your time in class.
Maybe you are an average (普通的) student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not so necessary, however. Anyone can become better if he or she wants to. Here’s how: 15
Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject. 16
Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says. 17
When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer. 18
The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover them after you have tried these.
5. Please write down a good way to help you with study. (no more than 20 words)

Do you know that sign language also has “dialects (方言)” Sign language is the main way deaf people communicate. Since they can’t hear, talking to people can be hard. Luckily, sign language interpreters are there to help.
Hao Shuxin, 24, sees sign language as her first language, as her parents are deaf. “I began to learn sign language before I could even talk,” she recalled. In 2018, she became a sign language interpreter at a law office in Chongqing. Her work takes her to places like courts, where she interprets for deaf people.
As sign language has fewer words, Hao often meets difficult legal terms (法律术语) that have no direct match. In such situations, she carefully explains the meaning to deaf people. There are also grammatical differences between Chinese and sign language. “For example, the words ‘put out a fire’ are signed as a fire put out in sign language because deaf people describe what they see first,” Hao explained. Hao feels stressed (有压力的) at work because accuracy (准确性) is important in legal interpretations. Her stress also comes from the fact that sign language has “dialects”. The same word can be expressed with different hand signs depending on where a deaf person is from. “For example, people in Inner Mongolia and Chongqing use different signs for the word ‘true’,” Hao explained. Having traveled to over 30 cities in China, she has learned about the ways deaf people across the country use sign language.
In her spare time, Hao reads many law books and talks with lawyers and her deaf colleagues to improve her professional (专业的) ability. “My parents are deaf, so I understand the difficulties faced by the deaf community. I want to do everything I can to help them,” Hao said.
25.Who can help deaf people talk to others, according to the passage
26.When did Hao Shuxin start to learn sign language

Do you use hand gestures when you talk Do you open your mouth and eyes wide when you are surprised These are all examples of body language. How important can it be
Body language does not use words. It uses the movement or position of your body to show certain meanings. According to American scientist Edward T. Hall, in a conversation between two people, 65% of communication is body language. In some cases, you even express yourself without words. For example, if your friend asks you to join him in a picnic, you will give him an “OK” gesture to say “Yes, sounds great!”. Sometimes your words say one thing, but your body language says another. You may do things unconsciously (无意识地), like touching your face while telling a lie.
In different cultures, the same body language means different things. In the US, making eye contact with someone means you are interested in what the person is saying. In some Asian countries, it is rude to look into a person’s eyes during a conversation.
Sometimes, different body language expresses the same meaning. Take “hello” for example. French people kiss on the cheeks (脸颊) to say hello. Japanese people bow. Maoris in New Zealand, however, touch noses in greeting.
In a word, body language is important in daily life. Understanding this language helps you to communicate better with others.

Reading for pleasure is the easiest way to become a better reader in English. It is also the most important way.
Some students say they don’t want to read for pleasure. They say they want to use their time to learn the rules of the language and new words. They think that pleasure reading is too easy.
Many experts say that pleasure reading is very important for learning English. Dr Stephen Krashen, a famous expert (专家) on learning languages, says that pleasure reading helps you learn many important things about English. Students learn more grammar and more words when they read for pleasure. They also learn more about good writing.
Dr Krashen tells us that pleasure reading helps each student in a different way. Each student needs to learn something different. Pleasure reading makes it possible for each student to learn what he or she needs.
Reading for pleasure is not the same as studying. When you read for pleasure, you choose your own books, and you don’t have to remember everything. There are no tests on your pleasure reading books. Pleasure reading will help you:
—- learn how English speakers use English
—- find examples of good writing in English
—- learn about the cultures of English speakers
—- read faster in English
—- learn new words

Have you heard of “soft skills” before To be honest, they’re abilities that are not taught in school. However, to be truly happy and successful, you need to develop soft skills. Here are some of them.
Understand the power of non-language communication. If you have watched a nature program, you’ve probably seen how some animals communicate. For example, a wolf can control its young just by using a different look in its eyes. While humans have the ability to speak, about 55% of our face-to-face communication actually takes place through body language.
Know how to make others laugh. I’m sure with your friends and family you have a great sense of humor. However, how about at work or when you meet strangers Break free, and add humor to your actions. Then your personal happiness will rise.
Respect others. Unfortunately, this soft skill seems to be going out of fashion at present. Too many people have become self-centered, and put their own hopes above the needs of other people. Please make sure you respect all those you come into contact with. Interestingly, by respecting others, you’ll find they respect you more in return.

读下面的一篇文章,在答题卡的1-5每个题目下做简单的笔记。
British people are famous for saying sorry in almost every situation. They say “Sorry” for asking a question, for their bad weather or because they sneezed (打喷嚏).
British people pride themselves on their polite manners towards one another in public. As a result, they use the word “sorry” quite a lot — even when they don’t really mean it! Usually, if they want to ask a stranger for the time, they would start by saying, “Sorry to bother (打扰) you. Do you know what time it is ” If they are five minutes late for a date, they would generally greet the person by saying, “Sorry, I’m late!”
That they say sorry does not only mean they feel sad for someone else because of their problems or bad luck. In the dictionary, “sorry” also means feeling regret because they have done something wrong. And now, think about this. Normally, when they want to ask a stranger a question, they start with “Sorry to bother you.” In this situation, they aren’t saying sorry because they feel sad for that person or because they feel regret.
In the British culture, saying sorry, in general, is a way to be polite, especially to people who they don’t know very well. Besides, it can also bring them other benefits in their daily life. In a recent experiment, an actor asked different strangers on a rainy day if he could use their mobile phones to make a call. When he asked one group of strangers and asked them without saving sorry first, he was only 9% successful in borrowing their phones. However, when he said sorry to another group of strangers about the bad weather before asking if he could use their mobile phones, he was 47% successful.

Everyone is born with the ability to learn. But whether or not you can do this well depends on your learning habits. Research shows that successful learners have some good habits in common.Creating an interest in what they learn
Studies show that if you are interested in something, your brain is more active and it is also easier for you to pay attention to it for a long time. Good learners often connect what they need to learn with something interesting. For example, if they need to learn English and they like music or sports, they can listen to English songs or watch sports programs in English.Practicing and learning from mistakes

Remember, “Use it or lose it.” Even if you learn something well, you will forget it unless (除非) you use it. “Practice makes perfect.” Good learners will keep practicing what they have learned, and they are not afraid of making mistakes. Hello, I’m Adam Smith. Do you know that many people are trying to learn a new language these days Some of them consider it as a hobby, while others have to learn a language because it is required by their jobs or study. As a foreigner who is really interested in Chinese culture, I like learning Chinese.
It is thought that a person needs to know at least 3,000 Chinese characters (汉字) to understand most Chinese newspapers. The problem for most foreigners, however, is that knowing 3,000 characters sounds like an impossible task, for many of the Chinese characters look the same. That’s why some people give up halfway. It’s the most difficult part for me, too. But I manage to learn how to write each character by watching videos online. Whenever I saw a character I didn’t know in the street or on a menu, I would just write it down on my phone and then look it up. Slowly I’ve learned the characters that are common in daily life.
As for speaking, I practice talking about different topics in Chinese in my daily life. It is the key to practicing speaking and helps me to think in a Chinese way. For example, whenever I was going to a shop, I would think how to say that in Chinese. Learning a language is never easy. Basically, I just use every tool on hand (现有) and take my learning step by step, and I’m still learning new things to this day!
70.Why does Adam learn Chinese

English has some apologetic terms (表示歉意的用语). It seems that they mean the same thing. They almost do. However, what’s the difference between “Excuse me” “I’m sorry” “Pardon” and “What”
Pardon
Americans don’t really use “pardon”. If you do, they will probably joke that you’re trying to sound pretentious (炫耀的) or joke that you’re British.
I’m sorry
We often use “I’m sorry” for past events. That’s to say, it is generally used to apologize for something you have already done. For example, if you step on someone’s foot on a crowded bus, you would say “I’m sorry” or “sorry”.
Excuse me
This is generally a term to ask permission for something. For example, you’re walking through a crowded place and someone is in your way. You would say “excuse me” to ask him to move out of your way.
What
Americans usually use it to ask someone to repeat himself. If you want to be more polite, you could say, “I m sorry. What was that ” or “Excuse me, what did you say or any other such things. Most Americans will just say” What ” though.
In our daily life, we can also use these terms by mixing them up. You could, for example, ask someone to move by saying “Sorry, would you mind moving ”. It’s an extra-polite way to make your request.
75.Who say “pardon” more often, Americans or the British

When an exam is coming, some students study alone while others study in groups to prepare for it. Everyone is different and unique, because everyone does not learn in the same way.
When you study alone, you may lock yourself in your room with classical music, a cup of tea and so on to make you comfortable. Besides, nobody is moving around or talking near you, which gives you a quiet learning environment. So it is easier for you to focus on exactly what you need to learn.
When you study in a group, it helps you keep the study plan. Besides, you are likely to remember more information. This is because you can put the information in your own words rather than reading from a textbook. It’s very similar to teaching the others in your group, which leads to keeping the information better.
After looking at the advantages of studying alone or in a group, it can be difficult to tell which is better. But Keith Sawyer, a psychology professor, prefers group studying. He thinks it can provide a way for students to make the notes of their own.
Professor Sawyer advises something students must do to get better group studying. First, limit the number of people and a good number is 3 to 5 students. Second, get yourself prepared with notes, questions and topics to look over. Nobody likes wasting time and waiting for you. Finally, pick a place, date and time for when your group will get together to study.
80.What’s the advantage of studying alone
81.How does it help you when you study in a group
82.Why does Professor Sawyer prefer group studying
83.How many suggestions does Professor Sawyer give and what are they (根据短文简略回答)

Have you ever wondered why you can’t remember anything more than its basic plot (情节) just a few days after putting your books down If you’ve ever wondered how to keep what you read in mind, here are some tips to help you.
Take notes and highlight (用彩笔做标记) things in a wise way.
Taking notes isn’t something many students like to do, but there’s a simple reason behind why it’s so useful: you can’t possibly write everything down, so you’ll be forced to pick out the most important points. While reading, try to only highlight important information. Before you highlight something, ask yourself, “Does this information fulfill (实现) my purpose for reading the material ” If the answer is no, then it is best not to highlight it.
Link (联系) the material to what you’ve learnt.
Connect new information to information you’ve already known. By collecting new information with prior (先前的) knowledge, your brain will remember the new information much longer. For example, if a historical event happened in the same year as your grandmother was born, by connecting two things together, you will be able to remember the date easily.
Reword what you read in your own words.

There are always some English sayings that sound fun. “I have to face the music.” is a useful and funny saying in English. When someone says it, it does not mean that he is planning to go to a concert or hear a singer. It is something far less happy, for example, when you are called in by your boss to explain why you made such a stupid mistake.
From time to time, everyone has to “face the music”. As young children, we all remember father’s angry words “I want to talk to you.” “You should be punished!” and that is only because we did not listen to him. What a terrible thing! We students have to “face the music” in the middle or at the end of every term. The result of the exam will decide whether we will “face the music” or not.
The expression is well known to each American, young or old. It is at least 100 years old. Where did it come from An American writer named James said in 1851 that actors who were waiting to go on stage first used the expression. After they got their order to go on, they often said, “Time to go to face the music. “ That is exactly what they did, as the playing group was just below the stage. An actor might be worried as he moved on to the stage. The audience(观众)would be unfriendly if he forgot his lines. However,he had to go out.
Now you can understand, “face the music” comes to mean that you have to face something no matter how unpleasant it might be.

After a long vacation from school, it’s often hard to get back into the study routine. Your mind is probably filled with short-term memory gaps and new experiences that make you feel like your brain has been taking a long nap. Since schools will go back to their normal system, students also need to get ready early. Here are some simple tips that can help you get back into the swing of studying:
Create the desire (欲望) to learn.
The driving force behind achieving success in life is desire. As a student, you must have the desire to lean. When there is a desire to learn, it will help you get back to your study habit faster. 95 Learning can be difficult, but fear and worrying won’t solve the problem either.
Make a list of priorities.
Once you’ve got the basics down, it’s time to make a list of what’s important. This is the most important step in any plan: you have to put your tasks in order and make sure they’re not all piled up on top of each other. Don’t forget that there are also time limits involved. 96
Find a way to track your progress.
There are several ways to make sure you keep track of your progress. 97 If not, then find one online or at school, and make sure it’s easy to find when you need it. This way, even if you forget what day a task is due (到期), there will always be some kind of reminder nearby to tell you when things need to be done next time.
98
It’s okay to ask for help. You don’t have to do it alone, and the more people who help you, the better. You will learn from their experiences and feel more confident by being able to make your own decisions when needed.
Getting back into studying can be a challenge; knowing how to handle it will help you in your future studies.
A.You must keep away from all kinds of fear. B.Use a calendar if you have one in your room. C. The first battle you need to win is in your mind. D.Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. E. This way, you can make sure you’re spending your time wisely.
