Since then, Zhang has devoted countless hours to refining her technique to perfection. She has made a world record of 53 knives hitting the target at a distance of 6 meters. A trip to Mars is an ultimate packing challenge. Six astronauts on an eight-month trip to Mars will need at least 18000 kilograms of water for drinking and washing. They’ll also need water to protect against rays. These rays can pass right through metal spaceship walls and damage living cells. That’s a lot of water. And launching items into space is expensive. It costs about $33,000 to send one cup of water to Mars.
But a layer of water placed around the ship can block the rays. Inside a spaceship, the walls have pockets like a big honeycomb, inside which water, dried food and algae (海藻) make hard walls and great radiation protection. And what if the same water could be reused again and again Flynn, an engineer at NASA, calls his packed-pocket ideal Water Walls. He hopes it will help make a manned mission to Mars a reality very soon.
New Water for Old
Recycling pee (尿) into drinking water is nothing new. To get clean water again, you just need to filter (过滤) out the extra stuff. As water recycling expert Sherwin Gormly explains, “Filter bags in the Water Walls will take your pee, digest it, and give you back clean water and dry solids.”
Water that gets into the air when astronauts breathe and sweat will be recaptured by salt-filled bags. As damp air moves past, the salt absorbs the water to be recycled again for drinking.
A Breath of Fresh Algae
“Plants are hard to grow in a spacecraft, so we use algae,” Flynn says. Algae will live in bags in the walls too, fed by poop (粪便) and sunlight, taking in carbon dioxide to make their food and giving off oxygen. This onboard recycling system has many advantages. It’s tiny, efficient and won’t break down.
8. What can Water Walls be used for
A. Storing food and saving space. B. Keeping out of rays and recycling water.
C. Preventing astronauts from being attacked. D. Maintaining the environmental balance on Mars.
9. What can we know about New Water for Old
A. Pee is purified for drinking. B. Sweat is gathered for cleaning.
C. Waste water is disinfected with salt. D. Damp air is filtered by filter bags.
10. Why is algae applied in a spaceship on Mars
A. It can be an air cleaner. B. It can break down poop.
C. It can be made into food. D. It can absorb various gases.
11. What’s the text mainly about
A. The challenge of sending water to Mars.
B. The ecological cycle in a spaceship on Mars.
C. The explorations made by humans on Mars.
D. The approaches to turning Mars’ rubbish into treasure.

Combine the non-profit fields with the tourism industry and you will get voluntourism — a multibillion-dollar industry linked with “doing good” while travelling. Essentially, voluntourists travel to another country to serve the local community. Though well-intentioned, these efforts are increasingly criticized.
Voluntourism has attracted many who would jump at the opportunity to profit from this enterprise. This has caused calls for tighter controls about exposing vulnerable (脆弱的) communities to unskilled labour and greedy operators make profits from foreigners. For example, some children in Cambodia are not orphans (孤儿) in the traditional sense but are removed from their families to fill places in “orphans’ home” at risk of abuse and violence. Donations from the goodwill of foreigners are unfortunately turned into a profit for the owners.
Another major criticism of voluntourism is that many volunteers exercise too much authority or become enthusiastic when providing their services. They take part in service projects such as construction and painting but lack the skills to build houses and may ultimately cost the local community more effort and money to rebuild the unstable structures. Furthermore, many community service projects are not meant to be long-term and amateur workers simply do not have the ability to ease poverty or provide adequate support for vulnerable children. These are all complex issues shaping people’s lives and cannot be solved by eager voluntourists in the short term.
Does this mean we should not help poor communities overseas No. Voluntourism can be meaningful by making proper preparations and being monitored. A good way to get started is to contact local organizations and ask how to help. The best help might not be physical labour, but rather how we can support local efforts and voices in the long term.
12. What is the original intention of voluntourism
A. To enhance tourism. B. To serve the public.
C. To publicize cultures. D. To provide assistance.
13. What can be inferred from the example in Paragraph 2
A. Those abused violently tend to be sympathetic.
B. The burden of the children’s parents can be eased.
C. Voluntourists are tricked into making more giveaways.
D. More profits contribute to the development of local economy.
14. Why are voluntourists not recognized
A. They are ignorant of local practices.
B. They are careless in fulfilling their tasks.
C. They are more than willing but lack the capacity.
D. They are eager for quick success and instant benefits.
15. How should voluntourists change themselves
A. Be well-behaved in every aspect. B. Join forces with local communities.
C. Be more ambitious about the goal. D. Offer good strategies to local authorities.

My family’s crest (徽章) is a design of a fish carved on a wooden door. The design of the fish wasn’t made so well that one could only identify it as a fish. The crest had quite an unusual origin.
My grandpa lived with my father and his three brothers. During the early 20th century, wars were fought and the family could only live a hard life.
One night, my father got up to urinate (小便). He saw a shadowy figure slip into the kitchen, so he shouted and immediately blocked the kitchen door. All his brothers got up, grabbed oil lamps and carried big sticks, carefully searching the kitchen.
At that time, food equaled the chance to live, so all of them said they would disable the thief, if not kill him, yet they found nothing. My grandpa came over. He asked all his sons to go back to bed. After they had left, my grandpa went to the water vat (缸) and knocked on its lid (盖子), saying: “Come out, they’ re gone!” From the vat rose a man, wet through and grasping a bag of rice with one hand.
Looking at the thief, my grandpa sighed: “Well, off you go!” The thief looked at my grandpa in surprise, hardly believing my grandpa would let him go so easily. He climbed out of the vat. My grandpa slipped a string of copper coins into his hand, saying, “Take the rice and money with you. Start a small business with this money. Don’t do such immoral things any more!” The thief tried to say something, but his eyes turned red. He bowed his head and walked toward the door.

【答案】 The thief turned around suddenly, bowed to my grandpa and then left. One morning a while later, my grandpa pushed open the door and found a fresh fish weighing more than one kilogram hanging on the door knocker. At first, he was a bit confused, but soon he realized it was probably the thief who had sent it to them. That man had probably started to sell fish for a living. From then on, fresh fish often appeared on our door knocker, which helped my family improve our diet. My father and his brothers were surprised, so my grandpa gently told them the story of the fish.
After receiving dozens of free fish, my grandpa worried the frequent gifts of fish would hurt the thief’s small business. So, during the following nights, my grandpa watched the door and waited for the gift giver. On the third night, he finally saw a man. However, it was not the thief, but the thief’s son. The thief, from his deathbed, had ordered his son to keep sending fish to my home. Grandpa asked the young man not to send fish any more. Out of respect for the thief’s final wish, my grandpa asked him to carve a fish on our wooden door as a good substitute. That well-preserved design, as time passed, naturally became the crest of my family.
