Here are four movies for you to watch with your kids.
The Mighty Ducks (1992)
It’s never too early to show your kids a sports movie. You probably have already known the plot of this one: A coach teaches the worst youth team in the league the power of teamwork. What makes this movie different is that the team expect just as much from their coach as he does of them, and give him severe criticism when he doesn’t come through.
Where to stream: Disney+, Digital rental
Cats Don’t Dance (1997)
Those who have seen it absolutely love it for the songs penned by Randy Newman, animated choreography(编舞) developed by the late, great Gene Kelly, and a fun story about a cat named Danny who dreams of breaking into Hollywood.
Where to stream: Tubi, The Roku Channel, Digital rental
Fly Away Home (1996)
Before they were a couple in Noah Baumbach’s The Squid and the Whale, Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin play a father and daughter who build a plane so they can lead a group of geese on their first migration(迁徙) south for the winter. Assuming your children aren’t into mid-2000s art house films, the pairing of these two actors won’t affect their enjoyment of this heartwarming, visually impressive film.
Where to stream: MGM+, Digital rental
Babe: Pig in the City (1998)
Director George Miller builds a tough but dreamy city that tests the optimism of its hero, a pi g trying to save his farm from closedown. While this may not mean much to your kids, the film is a favorite of musician Tom Waits, making it much cooler than your typical kid’s movie.

When my brother died in an accident, I was only 4 years old. But I still felt the big change in my mom’s attitude toward safety. Overnight, I couldn’t walk home from school by myself, even though everyone I knew already did. I couldn’t go to summer camps, because what if something happened to me As I grew up, the list got longer and longer.
I know my mom was worried about me because after my brother died, I was her only child. As a result, I became a natural worrier. I worried about things like car accidents, earthquakes, losing my wallet — disasters big and small, real and imagined.
The funny part is that you’d never know it by looking at my current life, because I have been constantly forcing myself to do things that frighten or worry me shortly after my mom’s death. Since then I have developed a rule for myself: If anything scares me, then I will force myself to do it at least once. As a result, I’ve done lots of things that my mom would have worried about: I’ve ridden a motorcycle and I’ve traveled — a lot. In fact. I am studying bird flu as a scientist.
There’s something else I don’t usually talk about, but it’s a cornerstone in my belief: When I was 14, I made a decision that I would either live out the rest of my life trying to be “safe” or I could be brave enough to live out an exciting and, yes, sometimes dangerous life.
Even though I inherited(继承) my mother’s cautious nature, I’ve also come to believe that the more often I do things that scare me, the more I realize that I can do a lot more than I originally thought I could do. Believing that has made my world a less scary place.
4. What does the author think of her mother
A. Courageous. B. Overprotective. C. Hardworking. D. Cruel.
5. How did the rules affect the author before her mother’s death
A. They led to much more freedom for her. B. They helped her to avoid a lot of accidents.
C. They made her feel more and more worried. D. They encouraged her to be more adventurous.
6. What did the author do to overcome her fear
A. She tried to do those seemingly scary things. B. She stayed away from the unnecessary risks.
C. She forced herself to focus on her current job. D. She persuaded her mother to stop protecting her.
7. What does the author most likely want to tell us
A. It’s funny for parents to worry about the kids. B. Fear can be a good thing to some degree.
C. We should be careful in a dangerous world. D. We can achieve more if we can control our fear.

It is not generally realized, for example, that a tale written in China in the ninth century is the world’s oldest known version of the story of Cinderella. The next earliest was not published until seven hundred years later — in Lyons, France, in 1544. In addition, 350 other stories that are related in some way to Cinderella have been collected from every continent.
Those Cinderella stories fall into two main groups. In one, the focus is on the ball, while comparatively little attention is paid to the supernatural force that helps her. This is the type most familiar to us and most commonly found in western Europe. In those found in eastern Europe, much attention is paid to the helpful animals. But the Chinese version contains both.
Old though it is, the Chinese version shows definite signs of having been based on still earlier — and now lost — versions. The incident of the ball, for example, is linked with the rest of the story so unnaturally that it seems that the author has borrowed this incident from some still earlier version, but without clearly understanding its significance. It will also be remembered that the king who married the girl came from a country called T’o-huan. Though this country is not identified in the story, we know from Chinese historical writings of that time that there was a small country by that name located near a region called T’o-ho-lo. And T’o-ho-lo can be identified with certainty as close to the modern city of Bangkok in Thailand. This makes it probable that the Chinese story of Cinderella did not originate in China, but was taken there from Southeast Asia, perhaps by the Arabs who went as traders to Canton in large numbers.
This story shows that the same simple virtues which are regarded as basic in the West have been emphasized for centuries in China and other parts of Asia. It is but one example of the way a story or an idea can travel all over the world.
8. What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph
A. A story usually has different origins.
B. Chinese literature has a very long history.
C. Different countries may have similar stories.
D. French literature was influenced by the Chinese.
9. What is unique about the Chinese version of Cinderella
A. The plot develops more naturally.
B. It is centered on those helpful animals.
C. Relatively little attention is paid to the ball.
D. It stresses both the ball and the supernatural force.
10. Which evidence shows that the Chinese version originates in Southeast Asia
A. The original writer’s identity. B. Some related historical records.
C. A newly found version of the story. D. A well-known kingdom in the story.
11. How is the text mainly developed
A. By analyzing an example. B. By reviewing studies.
C By telling a very old story. D. By conducting surveys.

When rains fell in the Atacama Desert for the first time in centuries, scientists had expected to see life blossom (繁盛). Instead, almost everything died. The shocking discovery was published in the journal Scientific Reports. Found in northern Chile, the dry core of the Atacama Desert hadn’t experienced rain for the past 500 years. But three years ago, rain started to fall once again in the region.
A changing climate in the Pacific Ocean resulted in the desert’s dry core experiencing rain on March 25 and August 9, 2015, and it rained again on June 7, 2017. There was no evidence of rain in this region for the past 500 years, although climate models suggested it should occur every century.
The international team of scientists who studied the region were hoping for deserts springing to life. “Instead, we learned the contrary, as we found that rain in the dry core of the Atacama Desert caused a massive extinction of most native microbe (微生物) species there, ”said study co-author Alberto Fairén.
Before the rain fell, this region of the Atacama had been home to 16 different ancient microbe species. But after the rain fell, just two to four species were still found to be surviving in the resultant pool of water. The cause of the extinction event, believed to have been about 85 percent of life in the soil, was caused by the sudden influx of water. In particular, these microbes were adapted to survive in extreme dryness. They were unable to adapt quickly enough to the unexpected rainfall.
But it’s not all bad news. The team also found nitrates (硝酸盐) in the Atacama Desert that were indicative of a lengthy dry period, while also acting as food for the microbes. And we’ve recently found nitrates on Mars, which could be indicating a similar process there.
12. How did the scientists find their discovery according to Alberto Fairén
A. Satisfying. B. Astonishing. C. Amusing. D. Comforting.
13. What does the underlined word“influx”in paragraph 4 mean
A. Shortage. B. Need. C. Arrival. D. Test.
14. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. The resultant pool of water was a wildlife habitat.
B. The team plans to turn the desert into a green land.
C Scientists have observed lots of microbes on Mars.
D. The finding brought some hope to relevant studies.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Unexpected Rainfalls Hit a Desert Badly
B. A Science Magazine Increased in Popularity
C. Scientists Unlocked the Secret behind Drought
D. A Breakthrough Occurred in Space Exploration

Last evening, as Mike and I were walking through the car park of the shopping center after our basketball practice, something unusual caught my eye. There, partially hidden beneath a parked car was a bundle (捆) of cash. My heart skipped a beat as I bent down to pick it up.
“Wow!” Mike cried. “That’s a lot of money. What should we do with it ”
I held the money carefully, aware that someone must be eagerly searching for it. “We need to find the owner,” I replied without hesitation. “Think about how worried the owner must be. It may be for the hospital expenses or something urgent.”
Mike nodded in agreement, “But how There are hundreds of people who come through this parking lot every day.”
Just then, we noticed a security guard making his rounds. “Let’s ask him if anyone reported losing money,” I suggested, We approached the guard, whose name tag (身份牌) read “Officer James.”
“Good evening, sir,” I said politely. “We just found some money under a car, and we’re hoping to return it to its rightful owner.”
Officer James looked impressed by our honesty. “Actually, a woman came to the security office about twenty minutes ago. She was really anxious about losing her money. Let me call my coworker to confirm the amount she reported.”
When we waited, Mike whispered, “You know, Jack, we could have just kept it. Nobody would have known it.”
I shook my head. “But we have known it, Mike. That wouldn’t have felt right.”
A few minutes later, Officer James returned with a middle-aged woman, whose name we later knew was Mrs. Parker. She was fighting back tears as she described exactly how much money she had lost and where she thought she might have dropped it.
“Oh, thanks a lot!” Mrs. Parker said when we showed her the money.
