Facing considerable bird population losses and a rising interest in birdwatching from younger generations, the travel industry has responded. Now at the heart of Europe’s birdwatching scene, many hotels offer equipment like binoculars (双筒望远镜) and organize nature walks. What was once a special travel interest is now a popular experience for all guests. From watching red-crowned cranes (丹顶鹤) in Hokkaido to observing Brighton’s famous starling murmuration (椋鸟群飞舞), here are some of the best birdwatching experiences to try.
Hokkaido, Japan
Eastern Hokkaido offers one of winter’s most amazing birdwatching experiences, with two remarkable species: red-crowned cranes performing dances against snowy landscapes, and sea eagles diving for fish. After a day outdoors, guests can enjoy traditional hot spring baths.
Yorkshire Dales, England
Broughton Sanctuary has transformed over 740 acres of land that was once used for raising animals into a healthy ecosystem. The rewilding project has recently created wetland habitats that attract even more birdlife. In-between birdwatching, try the wild swimming in a natural pond.
Yala National Park, Sri Lanka
One of the best places to see the island’s most diverse wildlife is Wild Coast Tented Lodge. The tent (帐篷) accommodation here comes with jungle views. Each stay includes game drives with expert guides, who help spot unique animals like the Sri Lankan junglefowl.
Brighton, England
From November to February, thousands of starlings gather at dusk, circling in patterns. The displays are at their most impressive in midwinter, when native birds are joined by migrants from colder parts of Europe. Stay at No 124 by GuestHouse for sea views.
1. What is talked about in paragraph 1
A. The growth of birdwatching tourism. B. Hotels with modern equipment.

In 1985, with two young daughters, Roxanne Swentzell, a Native American artist, returned from her studies in Portland to her Santa Clara Pueblo community in New Mexico. Her art was years away from producing real income, so she turned to the land to sustain her family.
“I had this dry patch (一小块地) in the high desert,” recalls Swentzell. “I started making it into a homesite, a farm I could grow crops on to feed my family.” To grow corn, beans, berries and grains, Swentzell tapped into the ancient, dry-farming traditions of her people in the southwestern U.S., where sunshine is plentiful and rainfall is limited. These proven techniques—applicable to many other dry regions affected by climate change—are becoming popular again among Native communities.
Initially, Swentzell’s use of ancient, high-desert farming was focused on the health of her own family. On her small plot of land, she dug waffle (华夫饼) gardens—grid-like(网格状的) sunken beds with earthen walls that look like a waffle—to keep moisture (水分) and avoid runoff when the occasional rains did come. Terracing on hillsides serves a similar purpose in dry farming; composting (施堆肥) helps enrich the soil.
Swentzell also identified microclimates on her land. A large, well-placed rock would slow the flow of water and provide shade and cooling. The fruit trees she planted and took care of did the same. She watched the sun as it moved around her house, making sure her berry bushes and seeds were planted where they could grow well. “Every place on your land has a microclimate,” she tells Mongabay.
As her passion for desert farming and seed saving grew, Swentzell’s desire to inspire her community of 7,000 became stronger as well. Swentzell sees the need for such ancient agricultural wisdom to spread further. “This is something the whole world needs at this time,” she says. “So, we’re waking up to the fact that we need to do something. We know that what we’re doing now has worked for centuries before us. And it can work well into the future.”
4. Why did Swentzell return to the land to sustain her family
A. She couldn’t make a living by her art. B. She determined to be with her daughters.
C. She lost her interest in arts. D. She intended to improve local people’s life.
5. What does the underlined word “runoff” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Trees being washed away. B. Water flowing out.
C. Houses being flooded up. D. Walls falling apart.
6. What can we learn about the microclimates on Swentzell’s land
A. They were caused by global warming. B. They were changed by water and plants.
C. They were discovered accidentally. D. They were used to support plant growth.
7. What does Swentzell suggest people do
A. Expand local community impact. B. Deepen the study of agricultural history.
C. Popularize traditional farming essence. D. Abandon modern agricultural knowledge.

Glasses that track every blink (眨眼) might be the next big thing in health tech. A small device called BlinkWise clips (夹住) onto regular glasses and uses AI to read your eyelid movements — without cameras, without cloud data, and without running down your battery. It turns something as ordinary as a blink into a powerful signal about your mental and physical state.
The average person blinks more than 10,000 times a day. The blink dynamics can reveal important information about focus, eye dryness, and mental workload. As researcher Lama AI-Aswad notes, blinking could be a tool for managing chronic conditions and detecting cognitive changes early. For example, frequent incomplete blinking might signal dry eye disease. Blink analysis, being easy to monitor, offers a powerful approach for early health management.
Until now, if doctors or scientists wanted to study your blinking patterns, you had to sit still in front of a high-speed camera in a lab. BlinkWise changes that completely. It just clips onto your glasses, so you can monitor blinks anywhere. That real-time model, called an eye-openness score, is more than just a simple “open or shut” report. It draws a detailed chart of how your eyes are opening and closing in every blink — something even the fastest camera on a smartphone can’t catch. Typical video records at 30 or 60 frames (帧) per second. BlinkWise samples data thousands of times per second.
So how does BlinkWise pull this off without draining (耗尽) your battery It runs all its calculations right on the device itself. There’s no need to send data back and forth to the cloud. Everything happens locally, on a chip smaller than a stamp. To do this, the team adapted advanced techniques and redesigned the processing system.
“Today’s smart glasses can take photos or play audio, but they don’t really understand the wearer,” said Mingmin Zhao, one of the lead researchers on the project. “We see BlinkWise not just as a health monitor, but as a building block for glasses that are truly intelligent.”
8. What can we learn about BlinkWise from the first paragraph
A. It records videos of the user’s eyes. B. It relies on cloud data for analysis.
C. It turns blinks into health signals. D. It works with specialized glasses.
9. Why does the author mention dry eye disease in paragraph 2
A. To introduce healthy blinking habits. B. To show the origin of blink dynamics.
C. To stress the importance of blinking. D. To illustrate blink dynamics’ health implications.
10. Which aspect of BlinkWise does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. Its speed of data sampling. B. Its ability to draw detailed charts.
C. Its function of measurement. D. Its advantages over traditional devices.
11. How can BlinkWise achieve energy efficiency
A. It is smaller than a stamp. B. Videos are recorded at a high rate.
C. It processes data directly on a tiny chip. D. Calculation data is sent efficiently to the cloud.
D
These days, institutions and companies love to announce what they’re doing to tackle the climate crisis. But in reality, the claims are not always accompanied by real, effective action — a shady practice known as greenwashing. But at the same time, other companies are not communicating their sustainability actions. This phenomenon is known as “greenhushing” and it could be just as dangerous as greenwashing. When organizations tone down their efforts, the broader sustainability conversation can be weakened — and the opportunity for businesses to be drivers of social change could be lost. But why would companies deliberately hide things that they are doing well
Our research has investigated how and why organizations take part in greenhushing. We focused particularly on how this occurs in service organizations. First, we examined the communication strategies of 300 UK hotels engaged in environmentally friendly practices across three channels: hotel websites, profiles (简介) on travel site , and social media platforms. We found that 62% of UK hotel websites do not include sustainability information, with only 2% of social media posts referring to it. Although booking platforms signal the sustainability of hotels that have third-party certifications, hotel websites often don’t provide much explanation in this regard.
Next, we uncovered three main reasons for the tendency towards not communicating — or even hiding — sustainability actions. First, managers spoke of reputational risks, highlighting their fear of being accused of greenwashing. Second, managers said they lacked confidence about the effectiveness of their sustainability practices. Finally, many service managers highlighted that instead of communicating good practice, they relied on sustainability certifications provided by third-party institutions to do the talking for them. But consumers don’t always understand all these certifications.
To build trust, it would be better for organizations to provide clear and comprehensive information about their specific sustainability actions. The sustainability dialogue needs to be promoted so that businesses have the opportunity to act as genuine drivers of social change.
12. What does the author think of greenhushing in paragraph 1
A. It is a new form of greenwashing. B. It slows down sustainability progress.
C. It urges organizations to make efforts. D. It is more harmful than greenwashing.
13. What do the statistics presented in paragraph 2 indicate
A. A rise in the quality of environmental posts.
B. A gap between green actions and communication.
C. A drop in the communication effectiveness of hotels.
D. A contrast between hotel websites and other channels.
14. What may cause companies to avoid communicating their sustainability efforts
A. Fear of unfair criticism. B. Consumers’ low demands.
C. Lack of third-party certifications. D. Managers’ dependence on laws.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Greenhushing: Businesses Understating Sustainable Practices
B. Greenhushing: Businesses Discouraging Environmental Efforts
C. Greenwashing: Businesses Promoting Sustainable Development
D. Greenwashing: Businesses Showing Environmental Commitments

Stacey Taylor, a tenth-grader, adored journalist Nellie Bly and dreamed of following in her footsteps. On her first day at Walker Senior High School, she was nervous but excited, knowing that her best friend Mandy would be with her. They’d stuck together from elementary school to junior high school, claiming bus seats, sitting together at lunch, and being the best in gym teams.
However, Stacey was assigned to the advanced classes, separated from Mandy in English. science, math, and social studies. She was in low spirits in her new English class until her teacher, who was also the adviser to the school newspaper, invited students to attend the first meeting next Tuesday. Her heart raced — this was her chance to be a real journalist like Nellie Bly.
Later, in gym, the coach announced soccer tryouts. Stacey and Mandy cheered, hoping to be on the team together — until Stacey heard soccer practice was every Tuesday, which conflicted with newspaper meetings. Stacey was torn. She talked to her English teacher, but he stressed commitment to the newspaper, just as the coach did for soccer. Her dad advised her to list the advantages and disadvantages: playing soccer meant staying with her best friend while writing for the newspaper meant pursuing her dream of journalism. She struggled, calling the choice “simply awful.”
At Saturday’s soccer tryouts, the field was crowded and Stacey played well with Mandy. Unsurprisingly, when the team list came out on Monday, it showed that both of them made it. Seized with confusion instead of joy, Stacey leaned against the wall and closed her eyes. Noticing her strangeness, Jonathan, the soccer team’s manager who used a wheelchair, approached her with concern. Learning her problem, he shared his own story. He loved soccer, but due to his physical condition, he couldn’t join the soccer team. However, he didn’t give up. Instead, he became the team manager. And he encouraged Stacey to think creatively to find a solution that could satisfy both her needs to maintain friendships and pursue her dream.
