On a weekly basis, Dr. Kwane Stewart, a vet (兽医), heads to San Diego’s East Village to care for the dogs, cats, and birds that belong to the homeless community in the area.

When you look at the colorful rows of fruits and vegetables in the grocery store, you might think you’re getting all the nutrients you need. But recent studies show that today’s crops have fewer nutrients than what our grandparents ate decades ago. This decline is alarming and could affect our health in the future.
Over the past 70 years, many fruits, vegetables, and grains have lost significant amounts of protein, calcium, iron, and vitamins. A review in the journal Foods in 2024 called this a major challenge for future generations. This is especially important as more people are encouraged to eat plant-based diets for health and environmental reasons.
David Montgomery, a professor at the University of Washington, warns that this nutrient decline means our food is less effective at preventing chronic (慢性的) diseases. Even if you eat lots of fresh produce, what you’re eating today is less nutritious than what your grandparents ate, says Kristie Ebi, an expert in climate change and health.
The problem lies in modern farming practices. Methods that increase crop harvest often harm soil health. A major study in 2004 found that 43 garden crops had less protein, calcium, iron, and vitamin C compared to 50 years earlier. More recent studies show similar trends in Australian vegetables and wheat, with significant drops in iron and protein.
This nutrient decline affects not just plant-based diets but also meat. Animals now eat less nutritious grasses and grains, making meat and dairy products less nutritious too.
Scientists urge us not to worry too much but to pay attention to how our food is grown. Montgomery says understanding the impact of farming practices gives us a new reason. As the population grows, we need to protect and restore our farmland to ensure healthy food for everyone.

AI technology has long been able to recognize patterns in music preferences and create personalized playlists. Now, a new AI system has taken this a step further by analyzing how people listen to music and identifying their unique “listening styles”. This advancement changes how music streaming services tailor playlists to individual users, making them more enjoyable.
Music recommendation algorithms (算法) have been highly effective at suggesting new songs and artists. But Dr. Emily Carter, a music data scientist at the University of Music and Technology, notes that these algorithms often use a one-size-fits-all approach that doesn’t record the slight differences of individual listening behavior. To better understand and satisfy individual preferences, researchers need to analyze each user’s unique listening patterns.
To develop and train their AI, the researchers collected data from over 50 million listening sessions and fed it into a neural network. They tested the system by seeing how well it could distinguish between different users’ listening habits. The system was given 100 listening sessions from each of about 3,000 known users and 100 new sessions from an unknown user. The researchers are aware of the privacy impact of their system, which could potentially identify users based on their listening habits. In theory, similar systems could also analyze other behaviors, such as the types of podcasts (播客) people listen to or the timing of their music consumption. ISMIR organizers found the study impressive but questionable, and accepted it on condition that the researchers detail the privacy risks.
