When you think about who’s responsible for a city’s safety, what people come to mind Police officers, firefighters or emergency response teams Would you put your local meteorologist (气象预报员) in this group That’s the career Ashley Ruiz chose, and she’s now the first female chief meteorologist in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Ruiz predicts the weather for her community.
In 2020, a tornado hit Ruiz’s hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee — and, even closer to home, her house. So she said she knew what a lifesaving job this could be.
However, her job isn’t without difficulties. “Hearing people have been injured, like in a big hurricane, is really hard,” she said. “We try our best to predict the weather as best as we can, and we are getting better. But it can always change.”
Ruiz talked about the new and changing weather patterns. She said, “We are absolutely seeing changes in weather, with more intense and more frequent storms, which relate to climate change.” Weather is changing everywhere, as the planet warms. There are more frequent droughts, stronger storms, and increasing temperature changes. This makes predicting the weather difficult.
Ruiz always knew she was interested in weather and how it affected the world. But her path to a career in meteorology wasn’t easy. She said, “I struggled so hard with math and wanted to give up. But I kept pushing and working hard, and now I’m the first woman chief meteorologist in the Baton Rouge TV market. I’m proud of that.” She wants kids to know they should never give up on their education or their dreams.
4. Why was the disaster in Ruiz’s hometown mentioned in the text
A. To call on people to prepare for disasters.
B. To introduce Ruiz’s unusual childhood experience.
C. To offer a successful example of weather forecast.
D. To show Ruiz’s understanding of the work of a meteorologist.
5. What is a challenge of predicting the weather according to the text
A. Climate change. B. People’s injury.
C. Poor technology. D. Lack of experience.
6. Which word can best describe Ruiz according to the last paragraph
A. Creative. B. Clever. C. Hard-working. D. World-famous.
7. In which section of a newspaper may the text appear
A. Sports. B. People. C. Education. D. Health.

A corn plant knows how to find water in soil with the very tips of its roots, but some varieties, including many used for developing high-output corn in the U.S., appear to have lost part of that ability, according to a Stanford-led study. With climate change increasing droughts, the findings hold potential for developing more drought-resistant (抗旱的) varieties of corn.
The study, published in the journal Science, uncovers genetic-mechanisms (遗传机制) behind “hydropatterning (水力模式)”, or how plant roots branch toward water and avoid dry spaces in soil. In particular, the researchers discovered that ethylene, a plant hormone (激素) known to help bananas ripen, also influences how roots grow to seek water.
For this study, the researchers developed a new, simplified way to study water sensitivity in roots. They found corn varieties adapted to hot and wet regions like Mexico were very good at making new root branches toward water and avoiding dry areas. In contrast, the varieties adapted to moderate regions of North America frequently grew roots randomly without distinguishing between dry and wet areas in the soil.
“Interestingly, the plants that are better at sensing where the water is are also making deeper root systems,” said lead author Johannes Scharwies. “One idea is that if the plant doesn’t waste time growing root branches into places where it doesn’t find any water and nutrients, then it has more energy to grow deeper down where water is more likely.”
Genetic analyses reveal two plant hormones, auxin and ethylene, play a role in how corn roots respond to water. While auxin was already known to help control this process, ethylene’s involvement was a new discovery. In experiments with thale cress—a model plant often used in research—the researchers found auxin signaling promotes root branch development toward water, while ethylene stops branching when the root is exposed to air.
Further research is needed to better understand the interaction of these genetic pathways before corn varieties can be developed with more drought-resistant root systems, but the findings highlight the significance of studying these localized responses at root tips, researchers said.
8. What is the primary focus of the Stanford-led study
A Drought-resistant corn varieties. B. Ethylene’s effect on fruit ripening.
C. Genetic control of root branching. D. Impact of climate change on plant roots.
9. What can be inferred from Johannes Scharwies’ remarks
A. Plant hormones make a big difference to root growth.
B. Nutrients guarantee better water-seeking root systems.
C. Root branching conserves energy for higher production.
D. Stronger hydropatterning was linked to greater root depth.
10. What can we learn about ethylene from paragraph 5
A. It has long been known to control corn roots’ response to water.
B. It works with auxin to promote root branching toward water.
C. It prevents root branching when the root comes into contact with air.
D. It is the only plant hormone affecting corn roots’ water response.
11. What does the last paragraph suggest future research do
A. Prioritize development of new corn varieties. B. Work out the mechanisms of genetic interactions.
C. Concentrate merely on localized root responses. D. Expand practical applications of hydropatterning.
D
From mushrooms that cast a soft green glow to plankton (浮游生物) that gives off sparkling blue, glowing plants are nothing new for nature. Now, scientists are bringing that light to houseplants. Reporting in the Cell Press journal Matter on August 27, researchers crafted glow-in-the-dark succulents (肉质植物) that recharge in sunlight. Injected with light-emitting compounds, the plants can shine in various colors and match a small night light at their brightest. The simple, low-cost method may help lay the foundation for sustainable, plant-based lighting systems.
“Picture the world of science fiction movie Avatar, where glowing plants light up an entire ecosystem,” says first author Shuting Liu of South China Agricultural University. “We wanted to make that vision possible using materials we already work with in the lab. Imagine glowing trees replacing streetlights.”
Glowing greenery isn’t a new idea. Past studies have designed similar plants using genetic engineering. But the glow is often weak and is typically only available in green. The methods were also complex and costly.
Instead of changing cells to glow through genetic modification, researchers from South China Agricultural University used afterglow phosphor (磷光粉) particles — materials similar to those found in glow-in-the-dark toys. These compounds absorb light and release it slowly over time. For the particles to travel through leaf tissues, the researchers had to get the size just right: around 7 micrometers, roughly the width of a red blood cell.
“Smaller particles moved easily within the plant but they had low brightness,” says leading researcher Shuting Liu. “Larger particles glowed brighter but couldn’t travel far inside the plant.”
The glowing succulents’ light fades over time, and the team are still studying the long-term safety of the materials for the plants. Still, the concept could offer a sustainable alternative for low-intensity lighting in pathways, gardens, or indoor decoration. The team is also exploring how the method can light up plants beyond succulents.
12. What can be inferred about glowing plants in nature
A. They are rarely found in the wild. B. They seldom give out other light but green.
C. They are completely artificial creations. D. They have been studied for a long time.
13. How did Shuting Liu introduce her study on glowing plants
A. By giving examples. B. By defining a concept.
C. By imagining a scene. D. By providing statistics.
14. What is the main advantage of the new method compared to previous approaches
A. It is simpler and less expensive. B. It produces more colorful light.
C. It is more environmentally friendly. D. It suits a wider range of plant species.
15. What should be paid special attention to when choosing phosphor particles
A. Weight. B. Measure. C. Quantity. D. Color.

A common misunderstanding about introverts is that they are loners or anti-social. ___17___ They have friends, probably not as many as extroverts (外向的人), but enough to suit their needs for human interaction. Scientifically, all humans fall somewhere between being an introvert and being an extrovert, and at least 25 percent of us are introverts.
___18___ Therefore, the ability to network is extremely valuable. Of course, sometimes introverts might be as capable of talking with people as extroverts, but sometimes they have to force themselves to engage with others in order to “fit in”. While extroverts feel comfortable shaking hands and making jokes, introverts get increasingly exhausted. ___19___ For the introverted, to continue in this awkward situation could really end up bringing them harm, with individuals reporting to suffer from loss of sleep, panic attacks and depression.
___20___ They form deep thoughts conduct themselves carefully, and pay significant attention to detail. So, for the best results in a project involving group work, both introverts and extroverts are needed.
A Society appears to favor extroverts.
B. Most introverts however, are just regular people.
C. These are feelings usually typical of an introvert.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I had always wanted a dog since young. My parents were against the idea, saying that taking care of a dog was a lifetime commitment.
On my tenth birthday, Father stepped into the house and announced, “Nancy, you have a new puppy!” I shouted in delight and ran towards Father, only to find it was a toy puppy. My face fell. I turned away. Father explained, “This is a ‘Think-It-Over’ puppy. You should try taking care of it before deciding about a real dog.”
The puppy did look like a real dog from a distance and it even had a dog smell. Inside its body was a computer programmed to make barking sounds. Father handed me a key, which could be stuck into its back to stop its barking. I accepted the puppy, which I named Friday since it was Friday that day.
That evening, my friends and I decided to take Friday to a dog café. It was freezing cold, so I wrapped it in a blanket as if it were a real dog. The computer inside could tell if someone treated it badly, like shaking or not caring for it, and I did not want that recorded.
Having waited in line, we finally got a table. The waiter, not knowing I was carrying a false puppy, asked attentively if I would need a basket with cushion. I told him, “Oh, it’s not a real puppy, but...” Before I could finish my sentence, he gave me an unpleasant look, turned and served other diners who were right there to play with the café’s dogs. I might have seemed unusual to him. During our meal, my friends and I received strange looks from the other dog owners in the café. We ignored them and continued with our own conversation.
After dinner, we went to a nearby shopping mall, where customers were selecting their favorites. My friends were looking at clothes, but I couldn’t. The puppy I was carrying was becoming increasingly heavy. Extremely tired of Friday, I put it down in a corner and just wandered around, seeking clothes I could try on.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly, Friday started to bark like a real dog.
