With a symbolic toast posture and a graceful bow, Song Haoming
and Fu Junxi, both born in 2010s from China, 11-year-old and 12-
year-old respectively, launched into a fluid yet powerful performance.
Blending the agility of Drunken Fist and the movements of tai chi,
the young duo has fused traditional kung fu with Hip-Hop dancing
moves, making history by reaching the top four at the Juste Debout
2025 global finals, the best result ever for a Chinese team.
Juste Debout, known as “the world's biggest street dance
competition”, attracts top-tier dancers around the world. Despite facing
elite competition, Song and Fu advanced to the quarter finals in the
Hip Hop category of the competition. The official Juste Debout's
Instagram account praised the duo: “Song Haoming and Fu Junxi from
China fought like warriors on the Juste Debout stage—fearless,
relentless, and unstoppable. From the first round to the TOP 4, they
gave everything. Pure heart. Pure fire. This wasn't just a dance
show—it was a statement.” Fu's mother, Jia, told the Global Times the
international response “exceeded her expectations.”
When asked why the pair chose to incorporate Chinese elements
into their routine, Fu explained, “This was our own idea.” According
to Fu, he is a fan of wuxia culture while Song comes from a martial
arts family. “When Song suggested adding Chinese elements such as
Drunken Fist, tai chi, and Wing Chun to our performance, I
immediately agreed. Street dance comes from the West, but we are
Chinese. We want to bring our culture into it and show the world
Chinese culture's strength,” Fu told the Global Times. For both of
them, the future is still full of possibilities. In addition to kung fu
and street dance, many more opportunities await them.
Looking ahead, Song, the Chinese dancer, longs to incorporate
more ethnic influences into his performance. Fu wants to explore more
new creative fusions, such as incorporating lion dance and other
traditional Chinese arts into his performance to help spread Chinese
culture. “There's so much more to explore, and we're just getting
started.”#6

Go to any movie theater or sports venue, and it's obvious that
there's an invisible bond that forms from laughing, crying, and simply
feeling while brushing shoulders with others. Researches have long
backed up this sense of connection, but some aspects of the
phenomenon remain unclear. Now, a new study is offering insight.
Writing in the journal Royal Society Open Science, Victor Chung
of the cole Normale Supérieure in France and his team reported how
they examined the matter by inviting strangers to watch videos
together in same-sex pairs.
Pairs of strangers watched three types of videos together: positive,
negative, and neutral with a curtain between them that was either
open or closed. At the start of the experiment, the researchers asked
each participant whether they'd like to meet the other member of their
pair again. After watching each video, participants reported their
emotions and feelings of connectedness, and after seeing all three
videos they were asked once again about their feelings towards the
other participant.
The results showed the emotional films generated stronger
responses than the neutral film. Crucially, the team said participants'
feelings of connectedness within the pairs were boosted when they
experienced more intense emotions. However, this was only the case
when participants watched the films with the curtain between them
open. The researchers said that whether or not the pairs could see
each other had no impact on how positively or negatively they felt
about the films.
“We found that silently watching emotional films together with
another individual is associated with social bonding, even when this
person is a stranger and without any verbal communication,” said
Chung, the study author.
The team added that the findings might help explain why people
seek out group activities that generate strong emotions, even
participating in sad memorials that cause negative emotions. In other
words, because emotion bonds us, and humans have a fundamental
desire to belong, we're up for experiences one might think we'd
naturally want to avoid.#8
1. What can we learn about the research method of Victor Chung's
team ( )
D
A. They invited pairs of strangers of different genders to watch videos.
B. Participants watched the videos without any physical barriers
between them.
C. Participants were asked about their feelings only once during the
experiment.
D. They compared participants' responses to three types of videos with
different emotional tones.
Pairs of strangers watched three
types of videos together: positive, negative, and neutral with a curtain
between them that was either open or closed.(成对的陌生人一起观看
After watching each video,
participants reported their emotions and feelings of connectedness, and
after seeing all three videos they were asked once again about their
feelings towards the other participant.
2. According to the study, which of the following factors most affects
the sense of connectedness between participants ( )
C
A. The type of the video they watched.
B. Whether they could see each other during watching.
C. The intensity of emotions the video aroused.
D. The order in which they watched the videos.
Crucially, the team said
participants' feelings of connectedness within the pairs were boosted
when they experienced more intense emotions.(关键是,研究团队表
3. What can be inferred from the underlined sentence “this was only
the case when participants watched the films with the curtain between
them open” in paragraph 4 ( )
B
A. Watching videos with the curtain closed had no effect on
participants' emotions.
B. Visual contact was a necessary condition for the enhancement of
connectedness.
C. Participants felt more positive about the films when they could see
each other.
D. The presence of a curtain between participants influenced their
emotional responses to the films.
However, this was only the case
when participants watched the films with the curtain between them
open.”
4. What is the main idea of the passage ( )
D
A. To introduce a new study on how group activities strengthen social
bonds.
B. To analyze the reasons why people prefer certain types of group
activities.
C. To explain the impact of different emotional experiences on social
bonding.
D. To prove that silent watching of emotional films promotes social
connection.
We found that
silently watching emotional films together with another individual is
associated with social bonding, even when this person is a stranger
and without any verbal communication,’ said Chung, the study author.

Ask students to describe their brain, and they're likely to suggest
a computer, a command center, or maybe a lightning-fast
communication network. But they'd be better off thinking of the brain
as a muscle that gets stronger with use. Researchers now understand
that IQ isn't fixed at birth. Just as we get more physically fit from
exercising, we can build brainpower through the act of learning.
Children who adopt what psychologist Carol Dweck calls a
growth mindset (思维模式) understand that intelligence isn't fixed
but can be developed through effort. In Mindset, Dweck explains why
students who have a growth mindset are more willing to tackle
challenges, learn from failure, and see criticism as useful feedback
(反馈) rather than an excuse to give up. This is the kind of
thinking that keeps students motivated, even when learning is hard
work.
The good news is that even the mindset isn't fixed. A growth
mindset can be learned and enhanced by messages that praise
persistence and set high expectations. For example, help students
understand that challenging assignments will stretch their “thinking
muscles”. At the same time, provide them with necessary support so
they don't get discouraged.
It is widely believed that all brains are not equal and that
context and ability influence learning. The brain connects new
information to old information and can be changed by experience.
Effective teaching strategies help students move toward higher-
order thinking, or what neurologists call executive (执行) function.
As professor Judy Willis, MD, explains, “When educators offer
students chances to put their learning into practice, particularly by
engaging them in genuine, personally relevant activities accompanied
by formative assessments and corrective feedback throughout a unit,
the facts students learn are no longer rote (死记硬背) memory.
Instead, these facts become solidly integrated into an interconnected
memory framework, rather than being deserted due to lack of use.”
Of course, all this brain activity is happening in a unique way
for each student. By addressing learners' individual needs, educators
can help students strengthen the bonds that will lead to deeper
understanding.#8
1. Why does the author compare the brain to a muscle ( )
B
A. To prove they possess memory cells.
B. To show they can be strengthened through exercise.
C. To emphasize they transport information quickly.
D. To illustrate they are important organs of the body.
But they'd be better off thinking
of the brain as a muscle that gets stronger with use...Just as we get
more physically fit from exercising, we can build brainpower through
2. What are children with a growth mindset like according to
Dweck ( )
D
A. They tend to shy away from trouble.
B. They prefer positive feedback from others.
C. They regard intelligence as an unchangeable quality.
D. They view barriers as opportunities for personal growth.
根据第二段中“...students who have a growth
mindset are more willing to tackle challenges, learn from failure, and
see criticism as useful feedback rather than an excuse to give up.
3. Which of the following enhances executive function ( )
A
A. Creative involvement with feedback.
B. Organizing activities personally.
C. Engaging in direct interaction.
D. Complete independence.

故选A。
4. What can be the best title for the text ( )
D
A. IQ and Its Influence on Learning
B. The Growth Mindset:A Key to Difficulty-Solving
C. The Significance of Executive Function in Education
D. Brainpower Building:Encourage a Growth Mindset
Children who adopt what

Change Is Hard but Unavoidable
Life, by definition, is never still. 1.___ If that is true, why are
people so resistant to change Generally, most people don't take too
kindly to change especially when it is thrust upon them without their
input. So how do we become more comfortable with change
B
When change happens, don't do anything. Our tendency when
change happens unexpectedly is to overreact to the situation. It's a
natural tendency and yet I would propose that you do just the
opposite. Go for a walk, calm down and take the time to think about
what is happening. 2.___
Again, when confronted with change, we seem to think we need
to have all the answers to any situation. Relax, you don't need to
know everything. 3.___ They seem to have the ability to be neutral
F
A
and make you think. This impartiality provides a real balance to the
situation and often gives you several points of view that you can
consider before you respond to the change.
Change is not so dramatic if you have been constantly gathering
new knowledge and perspectives as part of your commitment to be a
more well-rounded person. 4.___ By always embracing new
information or changing up your routine, you are actually better
adjusting yourself to the roller coaster of life.
C
5.___ What would life be like if you could foresee exactly who
would win the Super Bowl, who would marry who and what the
winning numbers are on the lottery If you want to get comfortable
with change, then introduce little elements of uncertainty into your life.
Change your routine, read books you would ordinarily never read, eat
at a new restaurant, order a meal you have never had, travel to place
you never considered.#3.5
G
A.This is where good friends and mentors come in.
B.It has been said that change is the only real constant in life.
C.It only shocks those stuck in a narrow view or fixed routine.
D.The rapid change in technology makes it hard to predict future
trends.
E.Embracing change nurtures a well-rounded understanding of the
world.
F.Sleep on it and wake up with a new point of view or even an
action plan.
G.The absolute predictability of life, if we knew it, would honestly be
boring.#7
1. ___
B
[解析] 根据第一段“Life, by definition, is never still.” 及 “If that is
true, why are people so resistant to change ” 可知,文章开篇表明生
Go for a walk, calm down and take the time to
think about what is happening.”
3. ___
A
Relax, you don't need to know everything.
Change is not so dramatic if you have been
constantly gathering new knowledge and perspectives as part of your
commitment to be a more well-rounded person.(如果你一直致力于成

LignoSat, the world's first satellite made mostly from wood,
reached the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a SpaceX
cargo capsule on November 5, 2024. The palm-sized satellite, named
after the Latin word for “wood”, will be launched from the ISS into
Earth's orbit later this month. Its mission is to determine if wood can
resist the harsh conditions of space. If successful, LignoSat could pave
the way for more environmentally friendly spacecraft designs.
The LignoSat Space Wood Project is led by Japan's Kyoto
University. The researchers began by sending a small panel containing
three different wood samples to the ISS in 2022. The panel was
exposed to space for ten months before being returned to Earth in
early 2023. After analyzing the results, the team picked wood from
magnolia trees for the satellite.
“Nobody had ever thought about using wood for rocket science
before,” said Professor Koji Murata of Kyoto University. “Many
engineers thought wood was old technology and couldn't be applied to
cutting-edge technology.”
The main reason for testing a wooden satellite is to reduce space
junk. Current satellites are primarily made of aluminum. The metal
reacts with oxygen when the satellites burn up in Earth's atmosphere
at the end of their life cycle. This process releases aluminum oxide
particles, potentially damaging the ozone layer. Wooden satellites,
which leave behind only water and carbon dioxide, could help
alleviate this issue.
“All the satellites that re-enter the Earth's atmosphere burn and
create tiny alumina particles, which will float in the upper atmosphere
for many years,” said Takao Doi, an aerospace engineer. “Eventually,
it will affect the environment of the Earth.”
Researchers also see a future where trees could be grown on the
Moon and Mars. Successfully testing a wooden satellite will
demonstrate that wood can withstand harsh space conditions.
LignoSat will orbit the Earth for six months, gathering valuable
data before burning up in the atmosphere. Murata and his team aim
to use this information to design larger and more advanced wooden
satellites and devices.#9
1. What is the main task of the LignoSat satellite ( )
B
A. To provide supplies for the ISS.
B. To determine the endurance of the wood in space.
C. To test the circling capability of wooden satellites.
D. To confirm the size of the wooden satellite in space.
Its mission is to determine if
wood can resist the harsh conditions of space.”
2. Which decision is made based on experimental results ( )
C
A. Deciding the exposure time of the trial panel.
B. Sending different wood samples into space.
C. Selecting magnolia wood as the satellite material.
D. Cooperating with Kyoto University on the project.
After analyzing the results, the
team picked wood from magnolia trees for the satellite.”
3. What is the main environmental advantage of wooden
satellites ( )
B
A. They can be repurposed through recycling.
B. They will not release aluminum oxide particles.
C. They can control the amount of space waste overall.
D. They can be obtained as building materials in space.
This process releases aluminum
oxide particles, potentially damaging the ozone layer. Wooden satellites,
which leave behind only water and carbon dioxide, could help
alleviate this issue.”
4. What is the author's purpose in writing the article ( )
C
A. To describe the process of making the LignoSat satellite.
B. To discuss the potential environmental impact of wooden satellites.
C. To illustrate the practicality and meaning of using wooden satellites.
D. To compare the features of wooden satellites and aluminum
satellites.

As an artist working at Cambridge University Botanic Garden, I
am leading a special 14-month project called DYE. My mission is to
discover plant-based dyes (染料) and share them with visitors,
researchers and artists through events, performances, a colour database
and projects linked to the Garden's plant collections.#3
There are some 8,000 plant species in the Garden. Guided by
medieval recipes, I experiment with berries, flowers, and bark (树皮)
to uncover colours hidden in nature. For example, I've transformed
roses into vivid red dyes and turned Jade Vine into pink paint. One
of my proudest achievements is creating “Newton's Gold”—a golden-
yellow ink made from the bark of Isaac Newton's historic apple tree.
I thought I'd end up with black but it's a dark golden yellow—unlike
modern methods that chemically force predictable results. These
discoveries remind me that nature holds endless surprises, but they
demand patience and respect.#4
My work isn't just about mixing colours—it's about storytelling.
Collaborations with historians and dancers connect my dyes to broader
themes. I dyed feathers for historians to study ancient costumes and
created fabrics reflecting nature's cycles for a dance performance. By
reviving forgotten techniques, such as a 15th-century ink recipe, I
bridge the past and present, showing how ancient methods can inspire
sustainable solutions to today's environmental issues.#5
Nature's colours are ever-changing. The fading of dyes reveals the
temporary beauty of natural materials, just as ecosystems' delicate
balance which demands protection. In the Botanic Garden, colours
from plants and everyday materials teach me to accept change. These
colours aren't just art supplies; they symbolize nature's strength and
remind us to rethink our relationship with the environment.
Through workshops and a colour database, I invite people to
view nature differently. My work is a return to the old ways of
making colour from my garden herbs, establishing a deeper connection
between art and nature.#7
1. What does the author do on the DYE project ( )
D
A. Organize and guide garden tours.
B. Collect and classify plant species.
C. Design and run a database of artworks.
D. Develop and spread plant-based dyes.
My mission is to discover plant-
based dyes and share them with visitors, researchers and artists
through events, performances, a colour database and projects linked to
the Garden's plant collections.
2. Why is “Newton's Gold” ink significant ( )
B
A. It honors Newton's great contributions.
B. It shows nature's unpredictable potential.
C. It links apple trees to scientific inspirations.
D. It exposes limitations of modern ink production.
One of my proudest achievements
is creating ‘Newton's Gold’...These discoveries remind me that nature
holds endless surprises, but they demand patience and respect.
3. What does the underlined word “reviving” mean in paragraph
3 ( )
A
A. Bringing back. B. Putting away.
C. Searching for. D. Reflecting on.
故选A。put away将……收起;search for搜索;reflect
4. What is the ultimate goal of the DYE project ( )
C
A. To improve natural dye stability.
B. To protect nature's ecological balance.
C. To strengthen sustainable art-nature bonds.
D. To bridge nature and art through gardening.
My work is a return to the old
ways of making colour from my garden herbs, establishing a deeper
connection between art and nature.

Ten years ago I became fascinated by the question:why are some
work teams more productive and innovative than others That began a
multi-year research program. We surveyed teams over time—some
based in the UK, others spanning other countries. We observed how
team members behaved. 1.___ We found productive and innovative
teams are “hot spots” of energy. Their magic contains three factors.#3
F
2.___ It may be a goal or a vision of the future that was so
exciting that it really fueled the energy of the team. They all pulled
together. Yet this alone is not sufficient. Some of the dull and
negative teams also had inspiring objectives, but the culture of the
team was such that no one was prepared to work together; they were
overwhelmed with competition, fear and mistrust.#4
A
In contrast, the more productive teams have a culture of
cooperation and trust. Don't get me wrong. These were not simple-
minded teams with everyone agreeing with each other. In fact, the
level of disagreement within both the under-performing and the high-
performing teams was often the same. 3.___ Those in the hot spots

On a warm and damp June morning, Emily Bick winds through
a field of knee-high corn. It feels like that quiet, expectation-filled
moment before a concert: Tech people are setting up microphones,
connecting wires. The star of this particular show is the microphone
itself. Research assistants are attaching it to the corn stalks (茎),
an innovation that Bick named the Insect Eavesdropper (窃听器).
Bick, an insect scientist, researches ways to better detect the
agricultural pests that drive serious economic losses worldwide. She
says improving these methods could result in using pesticides more
strategically—less often, at just the right time. Corn rootworm, also
known as the “billion-dollar bug”, feeds on corn roots, limiting the
plant's nutrient supply and making stalks fall over. As a result, 20%
of the crop is lost to the insect every year. Worse still, climate
change is bringing new challenges, such as the multiplication of
insects under warmer temperatures. In our global society, experts say
rapid pest detection will be critical to food production.
Bick's solution to the problem of pest detection is sound:
Eavesdropping on the unique vibrations (震动) that an insect makes
when chewing on a plant to identify the insect itself. The Insect
Eavesdropper uses a contact microphone, an affordable device that
musicians often use on instruments. A little disc sits on a solid
object—like corn—and captures the vibrations moving through it,
registering each one with an electrical signal. “When corn rootworm
feeds on the roots, the vibration travels from the root system to the
stalk,” Bick says. “That's where we're picking it up. We're using the
plant as the musical instrument, as essentially the outside of a guitar.”
Bick and her colleagues' findings aren't published yet, but as of
now, their detection method is anywhere from 80% to 96% accurate.
The team are still working on the data-processing pipeline, but hope
they can get the Insect Eavesdropper on the shelf in a couple of
years. Their goal is to advance pest detection—and maybe inspire
people to listen more closely to everything.#6
1. What is Bick's purpose in working in the corn field ( )
B
A. To prepare for a concert. B. To arrange for a study.
C. To make the show special. D. To innovate planting ways.
Tech people are setting up
microphones, connecting wires...Research assistants are attaching it to
the corn stalks”以及第二段中的“Bick, an insect scientist, researches
ways to better detect the agricultural pests”可知,Bick在玉米地里工作
2. Why is corn rootworm named the “billion-dollar bug” ( )
B
A. Its nutrient is rich. B. It causes great loss.
C. Its number is limited. D. It brings huge profits.
As a result, 20% of the crop is
lost to the insect every year.”
3. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to ( )
D
A. The corn. B. The signal.
C. The system. D. The vibration.
Eavesdropping on the unique vibrations that
an insect makes when chewing on a plant to identify the insect itself”
When corn rootworm feeds on the
roots, the vibration travels from the root system to the stalk”可知,当
4. Which of the following words can best describe the Insect
Eavesdropper ( )
C
A. Perfect. B. Inspiring. C. Promising. D. Purchasable.
The team...hope they can get
the Insect Eavesdropper on the shelf in a couple of years. Their goal
is to advance pest detection—and maybe inspire people to listen more
closely to everything.”

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many
people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are
concerned about their own appearance and actions too much. Negative
thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of
impression am I making Do they like me Do I sound stupid Am I
wearing unattractive clothes
It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people
unfavorably. A person's self-concept is reflected in the way he or she
behaves and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions.
In general, the way people think about themselves has a deep effect
on all areas of their lives.
Shy people, who have low self-respect, are likely to be passive
and easily influenced by others. They need faith that they are doing
“the right thing”. Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes
them feel inferior. They also find it difficult to be pleased by praise
because they believe they are unworthy of it. A shy person may
respond to praise with a statement like this one: “You're just saying
that to make me feel good. I know it's not true.” It is clear that,
while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.
Can shyness be completely got rid of, or at least reduced
Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination since
shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self-respect. It is important
for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths. Each
one of us has our own characteristics. We are interested in our own
personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it
becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and successful life.#6

A
A. Lack of self-respect. B. Weak characters.
C. Unattractive appearance. D. Low self-awareness.
Fortunately, people can overcome
shyness with determination since shyness goes hand in hand with lack

Teaching an AI system to make good decisions is no easy task.
AI learning models, which underlie AI decision-making systems, often
fail when faced with even small variations in the tasks they are
trained to perform. In the case of traffic, a model might struggle to
control a set of intersections (交叉路口) with varying speed limits,
numbers of lanes (车道), or traffic patterns.
To boost the reliability of models for complex tasks, MIT
researchers have developed a more efficient algorithm (算法) to
train AI systems for complex decision-making tasks. The new
algorithm, known as Model-Based Transfer Learning (MBTL),
strategically selects the best tasks for training an AI agent to perform
effectively across a collection of related tasks. This approach
maximizes performance while keeping training costs low.
Traditionally, engineers train algorithms for traffic lights at
multiple intersections by either training one algorithm per intersection
independently or training a single, larger algorithm using data from all
intersections. The first method is time-consuming and data-intensive,
while the second often results in subpar performance.
Cathy Wu, a senior author and member of MIT's Laboratory for
Information and Decision Systems (LIDS), explains that they sought
a sweet spot between these two approaches. “We wondered if we
could train on a subset of tasks, apply the result to all tasks, and still
see a performance increase,” Wu says.
MBTL models how well each algorithm would perform if trained
independently and how its performance would degrade when adapted
to other tasks, a concept known as generalization performance. By
modeling generalization performance, MBTL estimates the value of
training on new tasks. It selects tasks one after another based on their
value, starting with those that offer the highest performance gain, then
chooses additional tasks that provide the most significant improvements
to overall performance. This focus on the most promising tasks
dramatically improves training efficiency.
In the future, the researchers plan to design MBTL algorithms
that can extend to more complex missions, such as high-dimensional
task spaces. They are also interested in applying their approach to
real-world contexts, especially in next-generation mobility systems.#8
1. Why is the case of traffic mentioned in paragraph 1 ( )
B
A. To illustrate the value of AI systems.
B. To show the limitations of AI training.
C. To explain how to teach AI systems.
D. To introduce why to observe traffic rules.

2. What does the underlined word “subpar” in paragraph 3
mean ( )
A
A. Unsatisfactory. B. Substantial.
C. Unexpected. D. Average.

sought a sweet spot between these two approaches”和“We wondered if
we could train on a subset of tasks, apply the result to all tasks, and
still see a performance increase”可推知,第二种方法效果不佳。A项
“不够好的”能够表达此意。故选A。
3. How does MBTL enhance the generalization performance ( )
C
A. By training each algorithm independently.
B. By ensuring balanced exposure to all tasks.
C. By prioritizing the most promising tasks.
D. By adding sufficient tasks for training.
It selects tasks one after another

4. What are the researchers' future plans for MBTL ( )
B
A. To limit its use to traffic management only.
B. To apply it to more complicated tasks.
C. To lay stress on its theoretical analysis.
D. To leave its design for the next generation.
In the future, the researchers
plan to design MBTL algorithms that can extend to more complex
missions, such as high-dimensional task spaces.

When I think of my friends, I am mostly filled with love and
warmth:I simply can't wait to see them again for their affection and
support. 1.___ In the right mood, these individuals can deliver a fun-
filled evening, but at the wrong moment, they can drain (耗尽) all
my goodwill.#3
F
If this sounds familiar, then you too have frenemies, whom
psychologists call “ambivalent relationships”. These love-hate
relationships could include a friend, a parent, a colleague or even a
husband or wife. Their ambivalence can come in many forms. 2.___
It could be a partner love-bombing you one day, but fiercely critical
the next, leaving you unsure about their true feelings.#4
A
3.___ At the very least, you would expect them to be better for
us than our aversive (令人厌恶的) relationships. Unfortunately,
research suggests things aren't so simple. A team at the University of
Utah asked people to take a reaction-time test and they found that
rapidly flashing the name of an ambivalent connection on a screen
intensified stress response of participants. Another study at Brigham
Young University found that simply knowing an ambivalent connection
was nearby as participants prepared to give a speech was enough to
send their blood pressure rocketing. 4.___#5
B
C
Cutting ties with our ambivalent connections isn't always possible
or desirable if they are deeply mixed into our social network. So,
what can be done Simply being aware of the ambivalent nature of a
relationship might offer some protection. We can manage our
expectations and mentally prepare ourselves for the mixed feelings
when interacting with frenemies. 5.___ Just as importantly, be a little
more mindful of any interactions with all our ties. Show others the
appreciation and respect we feel for them, for accidental neglect could
be taken as a sign of indifference.#6
D
A.It might be a friend who is often unavailable when you need his
support.
B.We might hope that in such relationships, the good would outweigh
the bad.
C.In fact, even unconscious reminders of a frenemy can break our
peace of mind.
D.This allows us to focus on their good qualities and show empathy
for the unpleasant ones.#4
E.If you feel someone too negative a presence in your life, you may
decide to cut off contact.
F.A handful of friends, however, stimulate quite different emotions—a
mixture of eagerness and anxiety.
G.After all, the benefits of social connection come from feeling well
understood and supported.#7
1. ___
F
When I think of my friends, I am mostly filled with
love and warmth:I simply can't wait to see them again for their
affection and support.”
In the right mood, these individuals can deliver a fun-filled
evening, but at the wrong moment, they can drain all my goodwill.
“stimulate quite different emotions”与上文的“filled with love and
2. ___
A
[解析] 上文“Their ambivalence can come in many forms.”
合语境,且在句式结构上It might be与下一句的It could be一致。故选A。
3. ___
B
At the very least, you would expect them to be better
for us than our aversive relationships.(至少,你会期望它们比我们厌
B项中的“We might hope”与下文的“you would expect”相呼应,
“the good would outweigh the bad”与下文的“better for us than our
Another study at Brigham Young University found that
simply knowing an ambivalent connection was nearby as participants
prepared to give a speech was enough to send their blood pressure
C项中的“even unconscious reminders”与
上文的“simply knowing”相呼应,“break our peace of mind”与上文的
“send their blood pressure rocketing”相契合,进一步说明这种关系的
影响。所以C项“事实上,甚至是无意识地想起一个爱恨交织的人,也
会打破我们内心的平静。”符合语境。故选C。
5. ___
D
[解析] 上文“We can manage our expectations and mentally prepare
ourselves for the mixed feelings when interacting with frenemies.”
D项中的“This allows us”承接上文,“focus on their good qualities
and show empathy for the unpleasant ones”与上文的“manage our

A Northwestern University-led team of researchers has developed
a new fuel cell that harvests energy from microbes (微生物) living
in dirt. About the size of a standard paperback book, the soil-powered
technology could fuel underground sensors used in modern agriculture
and green infrastructure. This could potentially offer a sustainable,
renewable alternative to batteries that release harmful chemicals into
the ground.
To test the new fuel cell, the researchers used it to power
sensors measuring soil condition and detecting touch, a capability that
could be valuable to tracking passing animals. To enable wireless
communications, the researchers also equipped the soil-powered sensor
with a tiny antenna to transmit (传输) data to a neighboring base
station by reflecting existing radio-frequency signals. Not only did the
fuel cell work in both wet and dry conditions, but its power also
outlasted similar technologies by 120%.
The research was published on Jan. 12 in the Proceedings of the
ACM on Interactive,Mobile,Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies.
“The number of electronic devices used in modern agriculture as
a way to improve crop production is constantly growing,” said
Northwestern University's Bill Yen, who led the work.
“If we imagine a future with numerous devices like these, we cannot
build every one of them out of lithium (锂) and heavy metals that
are dangerous to the environment. We need to find alternatives that
can provide low amounts of energy to power a widespread network of
devices.”
In a search for solutions, the researchers turned to soil microbial
fuel cells(MFCs), which use special microbes to break down soil
and generate a low amount of energy to power sensors.
As long as there is organic carbon in the soil for the microbes to
break down, the fuel cell can potentially last forever.
“These microbes are common; they already live in soil
everywhere,” said Northwestern University's George Wells, a senior
author of the study. “We can use very simple engineered systems to
collect their electricity. We're not going to power entire cities with
this energy, but we can collect tiny amounts of energy to fuel
practical, low-power applications.”
The researchers plan to develop a soil-based MFC made from
fully biodegradable (可生物降解的) materials as their next step.#9
1. What can we know from the new fuel cell ( )
A
A. It was not limited by soil conditions.
B. The power it produced increased by 20%.
C. It was made from fully biodegradable materials.
