The countries of Central Asia are home to countless sites justly famous for their natural beauty and unique history.
Medeu, Kazakhstan
On any trip to Central Asia, you’ll likely find yourself in Almaty, the biggest city in Kazakhstan and a major crossroad for regional flights. Visitors can take advantage of the city’s museums or go skating at Medeu, a famous outdoor ice skating field outside the city. Tickets vary in price; but adults (24 and up) can enter for $5 and rent skates for $3.
Tash Rabat, Kyrgyzstan
Once a church, Tash Rabat was later changed into a caravanserai, or inn, on the Silk Road. The official caretakers, who live nearby, will unlock the gate to allow visitors to wander through the well-preserved 600-year-old stone buildings. After the exploration, consider staying at one of the nearby yurt camps. Before bed, be sure to look up: the high sea level makes the starry night extra beautiful. Expect to pay about $2 to enter Tash Rabat, plus around $12 for a night at a yurt camp.
The Pamir Highway, Tajikistan
The Pamir Highway is the long stretch of road that runs between Osh, Kyrgyzstan, and Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Set aside about a-week for the journey to make time for striking lakes and the grand snow-capped Hindu Kush mountains.
The Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, Turkistan
Arriving in Almaty, board a train (13-17 hours) to Turkistan to explore the Mausoleum. Dating to the late 14th century, it's believed to be the earliest example of the Timurid architectural style that defined the Silk Road.

Rising star Mirra Andreeva, aged 17, became the youngest ever player to claim a WTA 1000 title on Saturday when she defeated Clara Tauson to win the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
The Russian tennis player took one hour and 46 minutes to defeat 22-year-old Tauson in the final, falling to her knees as she celebrated the victory before rising to acknowledge the crowd.
In her on-court interview afterwards, Andreeva thanked her team, her family and the crowd before half-jokingly thanking herself. She smiled, “I know what I have been dealing with and I just want to thank me for always believing in me.”
Both players were competing in their first WTA 1000 final after enjoying impressive weeks to get there — Andreeva defeated five-time grand slam (大满贯) champion Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals and then world No.7 Elena Rybakina in the semifinals while Tauson knocked out world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in the round of 16.
At first, the pair were evenly matched in the final. Andreeva was broken immediately after hitting two straight double faults in her opening service game, but she fought back and eventually won the set with a dominant performance in the tiebreak. With the first set secured, Andreeva seemed more confident in the second, defending three break points to strengthen her own break at 3-1 and then winning every subsequent game to seal victory.
Still just 17 years and 299 days old, Andreeva also climbs into the top 10 of the world rankings with the win, becoming the youngest player to reach those heights since Nicole Vaidisova in 2007. Andreeva has already achieved her year’s goal. Now, she aims to be in the top five by the end of the year.
“I’m very curious if I will be able to achieve it,” she said.
4. What did Andreeva do first after winning the match
A. She celebrated on her own. B. She had an on-court interview.
C. She rose to acknowledge the crowd. D. She hugged her team and her family.
5. Why does the author mention Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina in paragraph 4
A. To stress the uncertainty of games. B. To highlight Andreeva’s excellence.
C. To introduce Andreeva’s role models. D. To show Tauson’s obvious disadvantage.
6. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. Andreeva’s temporary barriers. B. How Andreeva defeated Tauson.
C. Andreeva’s unique sportsmanship. D. How Andreeva enhanced her skills.
7. What is Andreeva’s next goal by the end of the year
A. To become the youngest player in the world.
B. To take the place of Nicole Vaidisova in sports.
C. To stay curious about other players all the time.
D. To climb into the top five of the world rankings.

Research scientists examined 48 populations of sea turtles (海龟) around the globe, measuring the impact of hunting, pollution, coastal development, climate change, and other threats on these animals. Significantly, in over half of the areas studied, they found that these threats are declining.
Study co-author Michelle María Early Capistrán emphasizes what has contributed to the recovery of sea turtle populations. “Legal protection was advanced by the U. S. Endangered Species Act of 1973 and Mexico’s decision to ban the catch of sea turtles in 1990. Conservationists have strategically focused on nesting beaches and habitat protection, minimizing both light pollution that confuses baby turtles searching for the ocean, and plastic waste in coastal zones,” Capistrán detailed in a statement.
According to the Oceanic Society blog, this study is the most comprehensive evaluation to date of the status of sea turtle populations and the worldwide threats to them. The analysis reflects the efforts of nearly 150 experts across 50 countries. And the findings indicate real progress: Over 40 percent of the assessed sea turtle populations are now considered “Low Risk—Low Threat”, a dramatic improvement on just 23 percent in 2011.
Problems remain, though. While sea turtles in the Atlantic Ocean are more likely to be bouncing back than turtles in Pacific waters, leatherback turtles, considered at risk of extinction, and in some areas, critically endangered according to the WWF, are not living as well as some other species.
All of the seven regions where leatherbacks are located face high environmental risks. These turtles make the longest-known marine migrations (海洋迁徙) of any animal, with some swimming up to 3,700 miles each way. The migrations that move them through a wide range of regions may expose them to unique risks.
“These findings are proof of the devotion of individuals and organizations working tirelessly to protect these ancient marine species,“ said Bryan Wallace, a study author and wildlife ecologist. “But sea turtles can accidentally get trapped by fishing equipment like fishing nets. It is crucial that the new technologies being developed to spare turtles become widely accepted and used by diverse fishing communities to really make a difference.”
8. What does Capistrán focus on in her statement
A. Sustainability goals. B. Future policies.
C. Conservation efforts. D. Environmental risks.
9. How does the author show the recovery of sea turtle populations in paragraph 3
A. By telling stories. B. By providing data.
C. By giving definitions. D. By listing examples.
10. What can be known about leatherback turtles
A. They are living as well as some other species.
B. They are less willing to travel through regions.
C. They are recovering rapidly because of the WWF.
D. They are likely to be in danger during migrations.
11. What do Bryan Wallace’s words in the last paragraph mainly suggest
A. There is more work to do to protect sea turtles.
B. A ban on fishing should be issued immediately.
C. The findings of the study are really discouraging.
D. Fishing communities are creative in saving turtles.
D
An experiment was a striking attempt to investigate weight control. For six weeks, a group of mice fed on high-fat food, and then scientists infected the mice with worms (蠕虫).
Bruno Guigas, a molecular biologist at the Leiden University Center for Infectious Diseases in the Netherlands, led this study some years back and the results, he says, were quite amazing. The mice lost fat and gained less weight overall than mice not exposed to worms. Within a month or so, he recalls, the scientists barely needed their measuring tool to see that the mice infected with worms lost more weight than the ones not exposed to worms. Infection with worms seems to have fought obesity (肥胖), the researchers reported in 2015.
While it’s true that worms eat up the food their hosts might otherwise digest, that doesn’t seem to be the only factor at work here. There’s also some complicated biology within the emerging scientific field of immunometabolism (免疫代谢).
Over the past couple of decades, researchers have recognized that the immune system doesn’t just fight infection. It’s also associated with organs like the liver, the pancreas and fat tissue, and implicated in the progression of obesity and type 2 diabetes. These and other metabolic disorders generate a troublesome immune response — inflammation (炎症), which worsens metabolism still further. Metabolic disease, sometimes, is inflammatory disease.
Scientists have also observed the metabolic influence of worms in people who became naturally infected with the worms or were purposely seeded with worms in clinical trials. While the physiology isn’t fully understood, the worms seem to be real masters at controlling inflammation, as discussed in the 2024 Annual Review of Nutrition. Worms can be dangerous in high numbers, and cause symptoms such as diarrhea and malnutrition in those at high risk, including children. But for most people, infection with a few worms is benign. They can coexist with humans.
“We’re never going to cure or treat metabolic disease with worm infections,” says Guigas. “They cause unpleasant side effects, and it would be impractical to infect millions of people with worms. But the findings could inspire more traditional treatments, which might bring fewer negative effects.”
12. What happened to the mice exposed to worms within about a month
A. They became sick of high-fat food.
B. They broke free of the infected worms.
C. They infected the mice not exposed to worms.
D. They got noticeably thinner than worm-free mice.
13. What can be learned from paragraph 4
A. Inflammatory disease can be cured with worms.
B. Treating metabolic disease demands deworming.
C. The immune system only fights against infection.
D. Controlling inflammation may benefit metabolism.
14. What does the underlined word “benign“ in paragraph 6 probably mean
A. Harmless. B. Dangerous. C. Complex. D. Avoidable.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Studies on Mice: The Key to Weight Control
B. Worms Can Help to Fight Metabolic Disease
C. Worms: A Potential Threat to Human Health
D. Inflammatory Disease Spreads Among People

Life in the digital world can be rewarding. It’s convenient to order groceries for pickup, share photographs or music, and keep in touch with family and friends, no matter the distance. ____16____ While digital detoxes, which involve intentionally avoiding digital technologies in the pursuit of balance and digital well-being, are helpful, they often fall short. Here are four strategies to improve digital well-being.
Finding replacement practices. We find that feelings of withdrawal during a digital detox are quite common. For many, reaching for their phones and scrolling (滚屏) has become such a habit that they often don’t realize they are doing it. Many turn to their devices when bored or stressed. ____17____
Strengthening social bonds. ____18____ This inborn desire for connection however, combined with people’s reliance on technology, can lead to feelings of fear of missing out and anxiety during a digital detox. So, during a digital detox, it is vital to fill your cup with community.
___19___ In today’s fast-paced environment, finding a moment to stop can feel nearly impossible. Yet the ability to just find can allow time for reflection, helping you consider what makes you happy and healthy. Yoga and meditation (冥想) are common ways that detoxers find moments to become more aware of their own thoughts.
Viewing digital well-being as an ongoing journey. Ultimately, digital well-being is a journey. It is not a checklist that, once completed, means you are fulfilled. ____20____ Instead, a successful detox often leaves people feeling introspective (反省的) and curious. Importantly, set and monitor goals to adapt to changing needs over time.
A. Emphasizing mindfulness.
B. However, it can also be tiring.
C. Being aware of different thoughts.
D. Humans are naturally social creatures.
E A single detox isn’t enough to cure digital imbalance.
F. Therefore, finding an alternative to occupy their hands can be crucial.
G. These replacements often involve hobbies or activities resulting in play.

I disliked Del. He never used my real name “Jenny”. Instead, he always called me “Germy”, which meant “dirty”. Besides, he was a very naughty boy at school. So when Mr. Smith, the head teacher, asked him to come to his office one day, I naturally thought that Del had done something wrong. A few minutes later, Del returned to the classroom and seemed heart-broken. He took his schoolbag and left, without saying anything. He did not return to class that day and the next day. All of us kept wondering what had happened to him.
“What did he do ” one of my friends asked me.
“He must have hit a little boy and was sent home by the head teacher,” I whispered to my friends. “A moment ago, I saw a little boy crying outside while Del was talking to him.”
Immediately, the whole class was talking about Del being kicked out of school for beating up a kid. I was shocked that my assumptions were passed on so quickly. So when Del walked into the classroom a few days later, the kids sitting next to him tried their best to avoid him.
“What’s the problem ” Del asked.
“I don’t want you to beat me,” one of the kids said.
“Yeah, I might,” said Del.
I could tell Del was joking but many kids thought he admitted he did beat up someone. During the breaks, when Del tried to join the games, the players just declined.
“Why ” Del asked, looking confused. “I always played with you guys.”
They just ignored him and went on playing. Del sighed and sat by himself while the others were enjoying themselves. Del looked very lonely and sad, much different from what he had been. I started to feel sorry for him.
I felt even worse for what I said after I learned what really happened. The boy was Del’s younger brother and he was crying that day because their mother fell ill and was sent to hospital. So I decided to do something to stop the rumor (谣言).
注意:1. 续写词数应为 150 个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next day, Del was left alone during the break, again.

My Experience at an Educational Waste-Sorting Workshop
Last weekend, I took part in a waste-sorting campaign to raise public awareness about recycling. The event included an informative lecture and an interactive sorting game.
During the game, participants worked together to classify various types of waste into different bins. It was both challenging and fun. Through this activity, I not only learned the correct way to sort waste but also realized the importance of individual efforts in protecting our environment.
I believe that small actions can make a big difference. Let’s work together for a greener future!

The next day, Del was left alone during the break, again. So I walked slowly toward him. At the sight of me, he looked a bit puzzled. Daring not to look into his eyes, I apologized and explained how my assumptions had turned into such a terrible rumor. “I’m sorry, too,” Del hung his head in shame and said in a low voice, “I wasn’t very nice to you, either. I know you spread the rumor just because of my bad behavior. I think I have earned it.”
After we apologized to each other I decided to do more. I walked Del toward our classmates and called for their attention. Everyone stopped in surprise. I told them that Del didn’t beat up anyone and that I just made up the whole story because I hated being called “Germy”. On hearing that funny name, all of them laughed, in good nature. “All right! Can Germy... Jenny...and I join your play now ” Del glanced at me shyly.
