Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) conducts an annual student Essay Contest to encourage the study and appreciation of Jane Austen’s works in new generations of readers.
2025 Contest Topic
2025 marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth. The theme for our annual general meeting is “No check to my genius from beginning to end,” a joking remark from one of her letters. This has suggested the prompt (提示) for our contest this year, which is to choose something in Austen’s novels — a particular word, a repeated situation or theme, perhaps a symbol or activity — and then choose two scenes (they may be from the same novel or different ones) where she employs the chosen “something” in contrasting or complementary ways. Explain the different roles it plays and why Austen uses them as she does. What point is she trying to make Does she succeed In conclusion, explain what led to your choice.

On a recent weekday, I sent an Instagram message to a friend of mine, an art adviser in New York named Stephen Truax, to chat about an exhibition. Instead of messaging me back in the app, he texted me to say that he’d blocked Instagram on his smartphone during daytime working hours.
Impressed, I asked him how he was accomplishing such a feat. Truax said he was using Opal, an app that makes your smartphone a little more like a so-called dumbphone (功能机).
He said that several of his friends swore by the app, and so he had begun using it, too. I took this word of mouth as evidence that it might actually work. I downloaded it yet without any particular optimism, considering my phone addiction an incurable case.
Opal, I found, provides something like gentle parenting for your smartphone habits: you set up a daily schedule of which apps to block, and then the app guides you into sticking with it. As the app suggested, I set up a recurring “Work Time” block from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and selected every social app I ever use. At the scheduled time, those apps go gray on my home screen and remain that way all day.
Every time I’m frustrated that I can’t look at Instagram on my phone, I just think, surely I, a human adult, can wait a few more hours to see my friends’ dog photos — 5 p.m. isn’t that far away. Crucially, Opal also allows users to suspend (暂停) the block for short periods of time without feeling like failures; when the scheduled break time elapses, the blockage automatically continues.
I find comfort in the fact that my mind feels clearer after a full workday without scrolling social media, and an added bonus is that once the block ends I can browse all the good posts that I missed. As Truax told me, “The flood of content that happens after dinner is wild.” The addiction is not cured, perhaps, but at least it’s finally managed.
4. What did Truax do after receiving the message from the author
A. He replied by texting.
B. He responded in Opal.
C. He blocked Instagram.
D. He chatted about the exhibition.
5. How did the author feel when downloading Opal
A. Disappointed. B. Helpful.
C. Pessimistic. D. Impressed.
6. What does the underlined word “elapses” in paragraph 5 mean
A Starts. B. Passes.
C. Separates. D. Approaches.
7. What can we learn from the text
A. Surfing the web makes the mind clearer.
B. Practicing self-control deepens enjoyment.
C. Checking updates after supper is advisable.
D. Curing phone addiction is totally impossible.

The sun was shining, people were paddling in the sea and dogs were being walked — a typical day on the beautiful Dorset coast. Just a few minutes inland, however, history was being made. Yesterday, at the National Trust’ s Purbeck Heaths nature reserve, four beavers (海狸) were released from cages and crawled into Little Sea, a 33-hectare lake — the first to be legally released in England after a 400-year disappearance and a fight to return them to the landscape.
The Trust says this is the prime habitat for them to wander free, with no fenced enclosures, full of lakes and watercourses for the beavers to make their home. The Trust has permission to release 25 on the island but is starting with four and then making more releases in coming years if this one goes well.
“I feel real hope,” said David Brown, the director at Purbeck. “I’ve worked as an ecologist for 40 years and this is the most optimistic time in my career without doubt. We are visibly, measurably recovering nature and that is so exciting!”
Conservationists have been campaigning for the return of the beaver for decades because it is a keystone species, whose existence allows other creatures to develop well. This is because beavers create complex wetland habitats by digging channels and pools and constructing leaky dams. Their dams can also deal with pollution, helping to clean up rivers, and prevent flooding as well as drought.
The Trust has worked with local farmers and landowners to ensure the beavers do not cause unwanted disruption. Purbeck hopes it will stimulate year-round nature tourism as people come to see the beavers and the habitats they create. “We have been seeing the economic development shift from bucket-and-spade tourism to nature tourism, and that is more sustainable,” Brown said.
8. Why is the beavers’ release considered historical
A. They are the first beavers spotted in the wild.
B. It marks an improvement in lake protection.
C. They are reintroduced to the wild after centuries of absence.
D. It offers a great chance for people to interact with them freely.
9. What does the underlined word “prime” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Perfect. B. Temporary. C. Familiar. D. Extra.
10. What aspect of the beavers do conservationists highlight
A. Their impact on the ecosystem. B. Their capability of constructing dams.
C. Their adaptability to the environment. D. Their popularity among tourists.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The beavers will reach other reserves quickly.
B. Beaver tourism may reshape the local economy.
C. More beavers will be released next summer.
D. Bucket-and-spade tourism is declining sharply.
D
What if there is no blood left in the bank when patients need an immediate transfusion (输血) Scientists in Britain plan to become the first in the world to produce unlimited amounts of human blood from embryonic stem cells (胚胎干细胞) for emergency transfusions.
A major research project is to be announced this week, which will end in three years with the first transfusions into human volunteers of synthetic (人造的) blood made from the stem cells of embryos. It could help to save the lives of anyone from victims of traffic accidents to soldiers on a battlefield by completely changing the present blood transfusion services, which have to rely on human donors to provide a constant supply of fresh blood.
Britain will play a vital role in the global race to develop synthetic blood. The Wellcome Trust, the world’s biggest medical research charity, has promised 3m towards the cost of the project. A spokesman for the Wellcome Trust said that an announcement is likely to be made in the coming week.
The project will be led by Professor Marc Turner of Edinburgh University, who has been involved in studies investigating how to ensure donated blood is infection-free. Researchers will test human embryos to find those that can develop into the “O-negative” blood group, which is the universal donor group whose blood can be transfused into anyone. This blood group is relatively rare, accounting for about 7% of the population, but it could be produced in unlimited quantities from embryonic stem cells in the laboratory. Such synthetic blood would have the benefit of not being at risk of being infected with viruses such as HIV and the human form of “mad cow” disease.
The project was held up because of the difficulty of finding funding for “translational” research that attempts to take scientific studies in the laboratory into the earliest stages of commercial development. This problem has now been overcome.
12. What is the primary objective of the project
A. To save the lives of accident victims.
B. To inspire more voluntary blood donors.
C. To produce sufficient blood for emergencies.
D. To transform the present blood transfusion services.
13. Why does the author mention Professor Marc Turner’s studies
A. To praise his effort to the research.
B. To show the project leader’s expertise.
C. To emphasize the importance of his research.
D. To illustrate the rareness of the “O-negative” blood group.
14. In what way will synthetic blood be superior to normal blood
A. It will help patients to recover sooner.
B. It will avoid the risk of various infections.
C. It will cure the patients of their diseases.
D. It will be offered to transfusion patients for free.
15. How does the writer sound in the text
A. Excited. B. Critical. C. Pessimistic. D. Informative.
第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
There’s nothing like family. The people we’re related to by blood and marriage are expected to be our greatest sources of love and support. Too often, however, our interactions with family are filled with misunderstanding and resentment. Those we should know and be known by best, end up feeling like adversaries or strangers.
Family is where our first and strongest emotional memories are made, and that’s where they keep appearing. And this is why emotional intelligence(EQ)succeeds where other efforts at family harmony fail. ____16____ The suggestions offered below are transformed from familiar reasonable advice, to highly effective methods for bringing your family ever closer.
Look to yourself first. A family is a system made up of interdependent individuals, but that doesn’t mean you can blame your family of origin for the way you are today ____17____ When you act on the belief that you have a right and obligation to assert your own emotional needs, your family will notice that your emotional independence benefits not only you, but the whole family, and they may quickly follow your lead.
Recognize that being close doesn’t mean being clones. Sometimes family ties blind us to the uniqueness of those we love. Pride in the family continuum can make it easy to forget that. You can’t be expected to have the same talents as your siblings, even though you may look a lot alike. ____18____
Cherish every stage of life in each family member. No matter how well we understand that it can’t happen, we desperately want Mom and Dad to stay the way they are, and for the kids to stay home forever. ____19____ Accept the natural fear that your parents’ aging evokes but use your emotional awareness and empathy to figure out how you can cherish this moment for its unique qualities. What can you and your parents share now that wasn’t possible in the past Can you keep having fun and make sure everyone still feels useful and worthy in the family support system
____20____ Fully accepting your fear of change can make it easier to ask questions that you may have considered awkward in the past. Maybe your parents are just waiting for your cue. Feel them out. In a flexible, healthy family dynamic, change is just one of the many opportunities you have to enrich one another.
A. Your best hope for fixing any family problem is to attend your own emotional health.
B. You won’t necessarily choose to follow in parent’s footsteps.
C. It’s also important to keep your awareness active with family.
D. The best to accept that fact emotionally, is to embrace change.
E. People all change, and yet many seem to only see change in themselves.
F. If you’re not sure what will work, ask.
G Active awareness and empathy tell us how to respond to one another’s needs.

Sarah couldn’t really remember when she and Laura became best friends. But they had been really close. They had lunch together in the school cafeteria, they went to the same book club, and they even had parties in each other’s house several times. As a matter of fact, the two girls had quite different personalities. Sarah was always confident and straightforward. In comparison, Laura was a bit quiet, but she was definitely the sweetest person Sarah had known.
On the first day of the new semester, Sarah couldn’t wait to meet Laura and tell her everything about her summer vacation. However, the moment she saw Laura enter the classroom, she was surprised. What could have happened to Laura Why did she gain so much weight Sarah knew it would be inappropriate if she raised the questions but she couldn’t resist the curiosity. “Since we are best friends, she knows I don’t mean any harm,” she thought. Thus, she asked, “Why did you get so fat ”
The instant Sarah said it, she realized she had made a mistake. People standing by began to laugh and point. Poor Laura, apparently shocked and offended by the question, stood still, tears welling up in her eyes. When she came to herself, she ran out of the classroom.
The next few days was very hard for Sarah. Whenever she reached out to Laura, Laura would walk away on purpose or pretended that she hadn’t seen Sarah. At first, Sarah was truly sorry for hurting Laura’s feelings. But as she tried several times in vain to make up with Laura, Sarah became angry. “Enough is enough,” she thought. However, Sarah couldn’t help feeling regretful because deep down she knew it was her fault.

Break Bad Habits, Embrace New Life
Good morning, everyone!
I used to be a chronic procrastinator, often leaving my homework until the last minute and staying up late to finish it, which left me physically exhausted and mentally drained. Realizing that I was trapped in a harmful cycle, I felt overwhelmed by regret. To break this bad habit, I started to schedule my tasks reasonably and set specific deadlines for each one. Additionally, I divided large tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. Gradually, I found myself becoming more organized and efficient. This not only enhanced my sleep quality but also led to better academic performance.
Now, let’s bravely identify our bad habits and take positive action to change them. Remember, small steps lead to big changes. Let’s leave behind the past and build better habits for a new life!
Thank you!

One day after school, Sarah stopped Laura. She knew she had hurt Laura deeply with her insensitive comment, and she was determined to make things right. “Laura, I understand if you need more time to forgive me,” Sarah said, her voice gentle and apologetic. “But please know that I value our friendship more than anything else in this world. I’m here for you whenever you’re ready to talk.”
Touched by Sarah’s sincere words, Laura was hesitant. She still felt hurt and embarrassed by what happened, but deep down she knew that Sarah was truly sorry, and their friendship meant too much to her to let it go. “Sarah, I appreciate your apology, and I’m willing to try to move forward,” Laura said, her voice soft but firm. Over the next few weeks, Sarah and Laura worked hard to repair their friendship. Sarah learned a valuable lesson about the power of words and the importance of empathy and kindness. And Laura discovered that forgiveness is not a sign of weakness but a testament to the strength of the human spirit.
