The Wonderful Wisdom of Ants
Philip Bunting
Think you know ants?Think again.Good humor and surprising facts are the name of the game here.Though seemingly
simple, the more of this book you read, the more you come to realize how little you may actually know about these tiny
workers. This book is full of true fun that'll generate a newfound respect for our hardworking neighbors.Give it to kids who
know next to nothing about ants-it may just convert them.

Sisyphus,a well-known king in Greek mythology, was sentenced to forever suffering in the underworld by the angry gods
:he had to roll a huge rock up a hill. When he reached the top,the stone would roll back down to the bottom, and he would
have to start all over,on and on,forever.Nowadays, any task combining boredom, struggle, stress, and futility (无意
义) might be labeled "Sisyphean".One could even argue that all of life is Sisyphean:we eat just to get hungry again, and

shower just to get dirty again, day after day, until the end.
Absurd (荒谬的),isn't it?Albert Camus, the philosopher and Father of Absurdism thinks so.In his book The Myth of
Sisyphus,Camus selects Sisyphus as a representative of the absurd. And yet Camus concludes,"One must imagine Sisyphus
happy, because the struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man's heart."
This may seem impossible, but this unexpected insight in Camus' philosophy of life and happiness can help you change
your perspective and see your daily struggles in a new way.Instead of feeling desperation at the futility of life,Camus tells
us to consciously accept its ridiculousness as the only way to arrive at happiness.
In fact, each of us can carry out Camus' absurdism with mindfulness in order to live a happy life. When the broad sweep of
life brings you horror, just concentrate on this moment, and enjoy it.The pleasure and meaning you can find right now are
real;the meaninglessness of the future is not.
On my bad days,I wake up seeing only rocks and can't face pushing them once again up that hill. Those are the days when
my old friend Camus comes in handy.Rather than feeling despairing of the absurdity of life,I dive into it,laugh at it,and
start my day in a light mood. Then I gather my beloved rocks and set out for the nearest hill.
24.What punishment did Sisyphus receive?______
A. He had to climb up and down a hill.
B. He had to move a stone up a hill repeatedly.
C. He was sentenced to living in the underworld.
D. He was stopped from reaching the top of a hill.
25.Why does Camus think Sisyphus is happy?______
A. He has enough suffering.
B. He can keep himself engaged.
C. He is selected as a representative.
D. He can always start over his work.
26.What will you do in a traffic jam according to Camus' philosophy?______
A. Enjoy music in the car. B. Flash headlights repeatedly.
C. Complain of the busy traffic. D. Regret choosing the wrong route.
27.What is the best title of the text?______
A. Avoiding a Sisyphean Life. B. Exploring Camus' Philosophy.
C. Finding Joy in Ridiculousness. D. Accepting Happiness Consciously.

Since 2010,nearly every country has seen an increase in the number of cancer patients. The WHO reports one in six people
will develop cancer in their lifetime. At least 10 million people will die from the disease every year.If the current trend
continues, new cancer cases will rise by 60 percent by the year 2040.In low- and middle-income countries, they will rise
by more than 80 percent.
Andre Ilbawi,WHO's technical officer in cancer control, says more people are dying from cancer in poorer
countries.Controlling the disease does not have to cost a lot.The WHO report,he explained, shows that by investing in
cancer services, governments can save 7 million lives by 2030. "And that is at the cost of 2.70 per person in low-income
countries and 8.15 per person in upper middle-income countries. This is feasible," Ilbawi said.
WHO says cancer does not have to be a death sentence.Prevention works.
There have been great improvements in research on cancer prevention and treatment. These measures are successfully
keeping many people alive who otherwise would have died.Preventive policies can work in powerful ways to reduce not
only cancer numbers and death rates, but also the social and economic inequality in cancer cases. An example of such a
policy is one that reduces workers' contact with cancer-causing materials.Other examples are measures to control tobacco
use, vaccination against cancer-causing infectious agents and testing for early stages of cancer.
In its report,WHO describes a series of measures proven to help in preventing new cancer cases. For example,it notes that
tobacco-related diseases are responsible for 25 percent of cancer deaths.Deciding not to smoke,it says, can save billions
of dollars and millions of lives.WHO adds that a vaccine against hepatitis B (乙肝) can prevent liver cancer. It notes
another vaccine against HPV can nearly fight off cervical cancer (宫颈癌).
28.How does the author lead in the topic? ______
A. By citing specific data.
B. By making a comparison.
C. By giving a vivid example.
D. By clarifying a personal viewpoint.

The concept was first identified in 2002 by Rozenblit and Keil at Yale, the phenomenon was revealed through studies
where participants rated how well they thought they could explain scientific processes before writing in-depth explanations.
Initially confident, many produced only sketchy accounts and were surprised by how little they knew. The Yale researchers
argued that this overconfidence arose from the ease of visualising processes – such as picturing a helicopter’s flight —
which created a false sense of understanding. Later studies showed that having online resources at our fingertips may feed
our overconfidence, as we mistake the wealth of knowledge on the internet for our own memories.
The illusion of knowledge does not remain restricted to scientific curiosities. It can shape our decisions and behaviour
on a daily basis. In the workplace, for example, it may lead us to overstate our expertise in interviews, overlook the
contributions of our colleagues and take on jobs for which we are ill-prepared.
What can people do to avoid these pitfalls (陷阱) One simple solution is to test yourself. If you are assessing your
ability to handle an unfamiliar task, don’t rely on a vague sense of what it involves. Instead, think carefully through each
step, and you may discover significant gaps to address before acting. It also helps to talk with an expert, who can help you
check false assumptions. Given the role of online habits, pause and try to recall a fact before searching. Feeling the
discomfort of ignorance can foster a more realistic view of what you truly know.
The aim, with all of this, is to cultivate a little more humility — one of the classic“intellectual virtues” celebrated by
philosophers. By recognising our illusions of knowledge and admitting the limits of our understanding, we may all sidestep
some unfortunate thinking traps to enjoy wiser decision making.
32.How does the author introduce the topic
A. By making a contrast. B. By quoting an expert.
C. By providing background. D. By explaining reasons.
33.Which daily habit most likely fuels the illusion of knowledge
A. Watching short videos for entertainment.
B. Memorizing vocabulary lists without practice.
C. Bookmarking articles instead of reading them.
D. Downloading lecture PPTs as learning materials.
34.What does paragraph 3 focus on regarding the illusion of knowledge
A. Its roles in job-hunting markets.
B. Its consequences in everyday life.
C. Its significance in work environment.
D. Its demonstration in scientific studies.
35.What can help us cultivate the “intellectual virtues”
A. Handling unfamiliar tasks.
B. Hiding personal ignorance.
C. Identifying knowledge gaps.
D. Challenging philosophers’ ideas.

When starting my sixth-grade year,I was nervous about many things. But nothing compared to the problem that I got to the
age where my voice started changing. At first, the voice getting deep excited me.But then I learned before getting deeper,
it can crack (变嘶哑).
The first time it happened I was so embarrassed.Surprisingly,my friends didn't make fun of me.In fact, they didn't even
mention it.But in my self-conscious sixth-grade mind I was certain they made fun of me behind my back. They weren't
having the same problem.
After my first voice crack experience,I was determined to make sure it wouldn't happen again. At least not in public. So,
except for strategic times I said, "cool" and "yeah",I didn't talk.My logic was, "If I don't use my voice,it cannot crack.
" However,I couldn't go without talking forever.I needed a new solution.
I began clearing my throat before speaking, which actually seemed to help.Limiting how much I spoke and clearing my
voice made me much less stressful. This was great but there was a larger problem.I was much more scared about having a
voice crack during class. My class had many new kids I'd never spoken with.I didn't want their first impressions of me to be
based on a voice crack.
Unfortunately, one day my concern came true.It was about two months after the beginning of the term.On the day it
happened everything was the same as always until I got into the classroom.I noticed that we had a substitute teacher (代课

老师) and immediately started thinking about how he would take attendance. My permanent teacher never had to,since he
already knew each student,I panicked. So many thoughts rushed through my mind that I couldn't think straight.I calmed
myself down by telling myself that I only had to say one word "Here". "Easy enough, right?" I thought so until my name
was called.I did my routine — cleared my throat, took a breath, and said,"Here." The only problem was that while saying
this,I had the worst voice crack in the history of voice cracks.

故选 A。
Andre Ilbawi,WHO's technical officer in cancer control, says more people are dying from
cancer in poorer countries.Controlling the disease does not have to cost a lot.The WHO report,he explained, shows that by
investing in cancer services, governments can save 7 million lives by 2030. "And that is at the cost of $2.70 per person in
low-income countries and $8.15 per person in upper middle-income countries.(世界卫生组织(WHO)癌症防控技术官

32~35.【答案】A、C、B、C
If you consider yourself reasonably intelligent and educated, you might assume that you understand how
the world works - from everyday inventions to natural phenomena. But think about this: How does a toilet flush Why can
sunny days be colder than cloudy days Could you give a detailed answer, or only a vague idea Many people, when asked
to explain, are completely at a loss. This bias is known as an“illusion of knowledge.”(如果你自认为还算聪明且受过良
故选 A 项。
Later studies showed that having online resources at our fingertips may feed our overconfidence, as
we mistake the wealth of knowledge on the internet for our own memories.(后来的研究表明,唾手可得的网络资源可能
The illusion of knowledge does not remain restricted to scientific curiosities. It can shape our
decisions and behaviour on a daily basis. In the workplace, for example, it may lead us to overstate our expertise in
interviews, overlook the contributions of our colleagues and take on jobs for which we are ill-prepared.(对知识的幻觉并不
What can people do to avoid these pitfalls One simple solution is to test yourself. If you are
assessing your ability to handle an unfamiliar task, don’t rely on a vague sense of what it involves. Instead, think carefully
through each step, and you may discover significant gaps to address before acting.(人们怎样才能避免这些陷阱呢?
The aim, with all
of this, is to cultivate a little more humility – one of the classic“intellectual virtues” celebrated by philosophers. By
recognising our illusions of knowledge and admitting the limits of our understanding, we may all sidestep some unfortunate
