Dogs have been close four-legged friends of humans for as long as we can remember, but exactly how long
has this relationship lasted Scientists may finally have an answer, thanks to a new study on ancient human remains
found in Alaska. The research suggests that the strong bond between humans and the ancestors of today’s dogs
began 12,000 years ago.
“We now have proof that dogs and humans had close connections earlier than we thought in the Americas,”
said the study’s lead author, Francois Laneo, an assistant researcher at the University of Arizona’s School of
Anthropology.
“People interested in the origins of the Americans want to know if the first humans arrived with dogs. Until
we find these animals in old digging sites, we can only guess — it’s hard to confirm. This discovery is very
significant.”
In a 2018 archaeological study, the same team found a lower leg bone from an adult dog like animal at a site in
Alaska. Carbon dating showed the animal lived 12,000 years ago, near the end of the Ice Age. More recently, in
June 2023, the team dug up an 8,100-year-old jawbone from a similar animal at a nearby site.
For the new study, scientists performed chemical tests on these bones. They found salmon proteins, suggesting
these animals ate fish regularly. This was unusual because dog- like animals at the time only hunted land animals,
showing human influence.
While the team believes this is the earliest known relationship between humans and dogs, they say it’s too
soon to be certain. A key question remains: “What defines a dog ” said Dr. Ben Pot, a co- author of the study and
an archaeologist at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Though these creatures acted and looked like dogs, they
might be too ancient to be genetically connected to modern dogs we know today.
4. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Humans and dogs developed a close bond 12,000 years ago.
B. Scientists discovered the oldest human remains in America.
C. Ancient dogs survived the Ice Age by eating fish.
D. A new study proves dogs originated in Alaska.
5. What can we infer about the significance of the discovery
A. It shows early human- dog friendship. B. It proves dogs came before humans.
C. It changes ice Age theories. D. It explains dog DNA fully.
6. How was the age of the bone determined in the 2018 study
第 4页/共 11页
A. Genetic testing. B. Protein analysis.
C. Carbon dating. D. Site comparison.
7. Why is the team uncertain about the earliest human-dog relationship
A. Weak DNA link. B. Not sure what is a “dog”.
C. Few bone samples. D. unclear fish protein results.

Bat habitats (栖息地) are damaged by human activities despite their contribution to our environment. To
ensure that we can study and improve the health of our bat population, we need to locate their habitats. But finding
their habitats seems like a tall order. They are small and fast and primarily fly at night.
Our new research combines our previous mathematical model of bat movement with data gathered from sound
recorders known as “bat detectors”. They are placed around the environment and left there for several nights.
Bats are able to “see with sound” when they’re flying. If the sounds are made within 10 to 15 meters of a bat
detector, the device is started to make a recording, providing a proper record of where and when a bat is present.
The sound recordings also provide information about the species of bat. Greater horseshoe bats make a very unique
call at exactly 82 kHz, so we can easily tell whether the species is present or not.
Our model can also be used to predict the frequency (预测频率) of bat calls based on a given habitat location.
So, we divided the environment into grids (网格). The squares whose recorders best collect the bat data will then be
the most likely locations of the habitats. This simple method can be applied to whole landforms.
Cutting out the regions that are least likely to have the habitats can mean we reduce the search space to less
than 1% of the firstly surveyed area, simplifying the process of finding bat habitats frees researchers to focus on
safeguarding these areas, rather than struggling to find them.
In 2022 we developed an app that uses publicly sourced data to predict bat flight lines. At the moment, the
app can help researchers, developers or local authority planners know how the environment is used by bats.
However, it needs the habitat location to be provided first, and this information is not always known. Our new
research removes this difficulty, making the app easier to use.
8. What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 1 imply about locating a bat habitat
A. It attracts a lot of interest. B. It is an extremely difficult task.
C. It has shown impressive progress. D. It often leads to unexpected discoveries.
9. Why is the greater horseshoe bat mentioned in the text
第 5页/共 11页
A. To prove the exactness of sound recognition. B. To introduce the species’ survival skills.
C. To explain bats’ movement in darkness. D. To discuss bats’ habitat preferences.
10. What effect does the grid-based method in the new model primarily achieve
A It helps count bats in different areas. B. It controls the sound frequency of bat calls.
C. It reduces the influence of human activities. D. It enables proper judgment of possible habitats.
11. What limitation of the 2022 app does the new research deal with
A. Inability to tell apart bat species.
B. Difficulty in guiding bats’ flight.
C. Dependence on pre-known habitat details.
D. Unsuitability for certain environmental conditions.

“It’s alive ” I say, mostly to myself, but also to my sister, Kirsten, who stands behind me. My arms are
wrapped around The Elephant, an olive tree which is said to be more than 3,000 years old - one of the oldest in
Puglia, Italy. I couldn’t be happier. Kirsten puts her hand on my shoulder and I turn, wiping away tears, and laugh.
This isn’t the first time I’ve seen The Elephant up close. My sister, my mom and I came to Masseria Brancati,
the small family farm that’s home to this tree and hundreds of other olive trees, seven years ago. Kirsten and I have
returned now, at my request, to learn how the trees have been , which in the past few years have been faced with a
disease, X fastidiosa.
I became aware of the poor conditions of Puglia’s olive trees in the summer of 2018; the news came at a hard
time for our family. After we returned from our first visit, we were surprised to learn Mom had a stress fracture (应
力性骨折) in her foot. As a result, she was finally wheel-chaired. In the fall of 2017, she was diagnosed (确诊)
with a rare disease called progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Like X. fastidiosa, it’s a killer that has no known
cure (治愈方法).
Now, the good news is that olive trees have hope. Certain varieties are lucky dogs, proving healthy even when
exposed to X. fastidiosa. Scientists are grafting (嫁接) branches from these trees to the remaining uninfected (未受
感染的) ones. The hope is that they can mix and prevent the further spread of death. My family has hope, too. The
U. S. National Institutes of Health recently provided a major fund to conduct research on PSP.
Before Kirsten and I leave Masseria Brancati, we return to The Elephant to say goodbye. I reach up and gently
touch The Elephant one last time. I silently beg. All we can do is hope - if not for forever living, then at least for

future generations who will be able to continue the traditions established in the past.
12. Why did the author visit The Elephant seven years later
A. To help her mother find the cure.
B. To test a treatment on it.
C. To recall her old memories.
D To check its health conditions.
13. What happened to Mom after the author’s first visit to Puglia
A. She was diagnosed with X. fastidiosa.
B. She gave up traveling abroad.
C. She fell from her wheelchair,
D. She suffered from a killer disease.
14. Why does the author call certain trees “lucky dogs” in paragraph 4
A. They could still stay well-off despite exposure to X. fastidiosa.
B. They kept alive healthily with the grafted branches.
C. They’ve been saved thanks to scientists’ efforts.
D. They’ve prevented further spread of tree death.
15 What message does the author most want to give us
A. We should keep hopeful when life is down.
B. We should protect wildlife in the right ways.
C. We should carry on ancient traditions.
D. We should stay with family when there is time.

Generally, most of us rely on forecasts (预报) to tell us what kind of weather to expect. ____16____ Not only
can predicting (预测) the weather be a fun hobby, it can also be a useful skill if you enjoy outdoor activities, such
as hiking or camping. By learning what to look for, you can predict the weather without a forecast or technological
device.
Determine the direction of the wind. Wind direction helps determine upcoming weather. Since weather moves
in from the west, westerly winds indicate good weather because they suggest the bad weather is already to your east.
Easterly winds suggest that the bad weather is coming toward you. You can use grass or leaves to determine the

direction of the wind.____17____
Watch smoke from a fire. The air pressure determines what direction the smoke will go. In high pressure, the
smoke will go directly up into the air. ____18____ When smoke circles downwards, it means that bad weather is
very close.
____19____ Before a storm, the low-pressure system can push out the area’s normal wind patterns. This
creates a temporary calm before the storm begins. You’ll notice a lack of wind, which creates stillness over the area.
If you’re near water, it will be calm and still, as well. This calm indicates a coming storm.
Check for humidity (湿度). High humidity often comes before a storm, so watch for signs of high humidity,
such as frizzy hair, curling leaves, and swollen wood. ____20____ if you live in an area that always has high
humidity, rely on other observations to predict the weather.
A. Watch for calm conditions.
B. Keep an eye out for low pressure.
C. These signs can tell you that a storm is on the way.
D. If the pressure is low, it will circle back down around the fire.
E. Current weather forecasts can predict the weather for more than 30 days.
F. Throw your grass or leaves into the wind and watch the way that it blows or falls.
G. However, it is possible to predict the weather using your skills of observation and knowledge.

Niesha could not forget the way she had frozen in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had divided the class
into groups to do presentations. Today had been Niesha’s turn. However, her hands had shaken so badly that she
couldn’t read her notes. Her voice had become softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts had kindly ended Niesha’s part
of the presentation even though she had clearly not finished. He had also asked Niesha to stay after class for a
moment.
“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Mr.
Roberts had hesitated, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage ”
Niesha had nodded, grateful for the chance. She had gone as quickly as she could to her next class. She had kept
her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen
windows. Momma was baking. Momma studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong,
Niesha ”
Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a moment, her hands

still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your
class ” Momma asked. She set the timer and then said, “Let me show something.”
Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings(
剪报)and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very
young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the
year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first-not sure of yourself at all, I worked hard, and mostly I faced
my fears. You just need to find your courage.”
