Animal rescuer and cinematographer Douglas Thorn’s passion for animals began when he was a little kid. “I started rescuing orphaned baby animals,” Thorn says. “And I wanted to be a wildlife cinematographer.”
When Thron grew up, he did just that, working for shows like Discovery Channels Shark Week, filming the great white sharks off the coast of Santa Cruz, California. But Thron says it was the Paradise Fire in California in 2018 that “pushed” him to do animal rescue activism work, putting his aerial cinematography skills to good use.
At the time, Thron was filming a man who was rescuing cats after the fire using an infrared hand-held camera. The camera uses heat to detect the animals at night Thron and the man talked about how incredible it would be to put one on a drone to detect animals more easily. “The animal's body temperature will glow on the screen and you can pick them out among the bricks and stones,” explains Thron.
The first animal Thron ever rescued was a dog in the Bahamas after a category-5 hurricane hit, which wiped out hundreds of houses. Thron tested out putting an infrared scope on a drone and found the dog.
“The drone really shaves off critical time so that the really badly hurt animals are able to be rescued,” Thron says. Once the scope picks up the “heat signature of an animal”, Thron turns a spotlight on the animal and zooms in on it, so he and the rescue crews can go and save the animal.
Thron has basically been “going non-stop since then”. His TV show, Doug to the Rescue, shows some of his heart-warming animal rescues, including after Hurricane Laura in Louisiana in 2020 and after fires in Northern California and Oregon. Thron also helped rescue koalas after fires damaged parts of Australia in 2020.
24.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.Researching rare animals. B.Rescuing homeless animals.
C.Becoming a disaster rescuer. D.Working as a wildlife cinematographer.
25.What's Thron's purpose for attaching the infrared camera to the drone
A.To locate an animal quickly. B.To shoot more inviting photos.
C.To take animals' body temperature. D.To give warnings of dangers timely.
26.What's the fifth paragraph mainly about
A.The difficulties Thron has to overcome.
B.The skills Thron will need to operate the drone.
C.The way Thron uses the drone to rescue animals.
D.The reason why Thron chooses his present job.
27.According to the passage, which word can best describe Thron
A.Modest. B.Creative. C.Generous. D.Outgoing.
Did you know the basic structure of your brain is very similar to that of other mammals This surprising fact says a lot about animal thought because having brains and hormones(激素) similar to those of humans makes other mammals(哺乳动物) act, feel, and think much like we do.
In fact, animals actually possess cognition, the ability to acquire knowledge. Elephants consciously(有意识地) learn which plants to eat from older elephants by observing them and tasting the foods they eat. So, while our experience of the world might differ from theirs, consciousness is not a privilege(特权) limited to us.
And brains can even teach us about how animals feel. For instance, oxytocin, a kind of hormone, is essential in forming bonds in humans as well as other mammals. So, if it’s blocked in an individual’s brain, they’re likely to feel alone. The fact that the same is true for humans and animals suggests a similarity both in our brains and our feelings.
But what about the animals with tiny brains Can they feel too Actually, brain size is a poor indicator of animal intelligence. A better one is how much an animal’s brain has in common with ours. That’s because a larger brain, while it means more computing power, isn’t necessarily helpful. For example, tuna have smaller brains than dolphins but are just as good at hunting.
Large brains are necessary for being social and cooperating with others. That’s because when individuals are responsible for the survival of a group, a bigger or social brain is needed. In the case of animals that do have social brains, like elephants, whales, and dolphins, it’s hard to deny that they’re thinking and feeling like humans when their brains so closely resemble ours.
28.Why are elephants mentioned in paragraph 2
A.To compare humans and animals. B.To illustrate animals’ ability to learn.
C.To introduce elephants’ eating habits. D.To prove elephants are social animals.
29.What will oxytocin’s being reduced lead to
A.Increased loneliness. B.Improved hunting skills.
C.Poore r social ability. D.Stronger bonds with others.
30.What does the underlined phrase “A better one” in paragraph 4 refer to
A.A larger brain. B.A more brilliant mind.
C.A sharper sense. D.A more reliable indicator.
31.What message does this text mainly intend to convey
A.Brain size is vital to intelligence.
B.Consciousness is not humans’ privilege.
C.Mammals may think and feel like humans.
D.Animals share similar brain structure with humans.
Working with ARIA Research, a startup developing vision for the blind, Phoebe Peng is using technologically advanced human echolocation (回声定位) that enables blind users to perceive their surroundings in precise detail.
The process uses event cameras which, unlike normal cameras that take complete images of a scene, track changes in an image over time, making them ideal for the observation of small objects like table tennis balls. The images are then processed into sound using a specialised algorithm (算法). This is then communicated back to the player via a lot of loudspeakers, ultimately with the aim of allowing players to track the ball and movements using sounds.
According to Peng, table tennis makes a perfect test case for the kind of technology being developed by ARIA Research. “Table tennis has been played for decades as a more accessible version of tennis. The sport is beginner-friendly while maintaining a rich level of competitive play. However, like many sports, it remains difficult for people who suffer vision loss or have low vision,” said Ms Peng, who will soon complete a Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering.
“The small size of the ball and table, along with the movement of the ball in 3D space, are things that make table tennis difficult to play for those with low vision and complete blindness,” said Peng, who is completing the work for her degree. “Making this sport more accessible while also exploring the potential of event cameras were my two biggest motivators,” she said.
In one study, using two perfectly positioned cameras, Ms Peng was able to identify and track a ball in three dimensions in real time. She then fed that data into an algorithm controlling the loudspeakers standing along the sides of the table, which created a sound field matching the position of the ball.
While the results are promising, more experimentation will be needed before the system will be ready for actual play. “There are limitations on how accurately people can perceive sound localisation. What type of sound should be used Should the sound be continuous This is what we’ll be tackling in the next stage of development,” said Ms Peng.
32.How are event cameras different from normal ones
A.They can have sounds located.
B.They are linked with loudspeakers.
C.They constantly follow image changes.
D.They take complete images of a scene.
33.What makes table tennis a perfect test case for the research
A.Its unique feature. B.Its fierce competition.
C.Its technical complexity. D.Its beginner-friendliness.
34.What is the last paragraph mainly about concerning the study
A.Its inspiring results. B.Its promising future.
C.Its practical applications. D.Its technological challenge.
35.What could be the best title for the text
A.Technology Opens up Blind Table Tennis
B.Blind People Work Wonders in Table Tennis
C.Event Camera Reshapes Future for the Disabled
D.Algorithm Helps Translate Imagination to Sound
“We are what we eat” — or so the saying goes. From high-calorie meals to low-fat lunches, much of our health depends on what we eat. 36 However, a growing body of evidence suggests that our mental well-being is also deeply influenced by how we prepare our food — the act of cooking itself.
Some people are now advocating the therapeutic (疗法的) value of cooking food. It’s not just about the end result but the experience someone goes through. 37 They help patients develop planning skills, short-term memory and social skills — all of which suffer in mental illness.
TV chef and author Nadiya Hussain agrees that cooking is great for helping our mind. She loves to bake and became the champion of the TV show, The Great British Bake Off. She says that baking has never really been about the cake. 38 And she thinks that baking is an important tool for our socialization.
Cooking some delicious food has helped some of us get through hard times; it’s helped take our mind off things and given us something to do. 39 Nicole Farmer, who studies how food impacts our behaviour and mental health, told BBC online that “cooking represents the shared human experience of taking care of people through food, so I think that’s where it creates positive emotions.”
40 As we start to mix with friends and family in the kitchen, we can put us all in the right frame of mind and enjoy the benefits of those shared moments.
A.Cooking can also be a highly sociable activity.
B.Actually, tasty food is linked to positive feelings.
C.What matters is the sense of calm that baking brings.
D.Baking and cooking have been confirmed as good therapies.
E.For a long time, the focus has been on food’s nutritional value.
F.Altogether, cooking benefits both our physical and mental well-being.
G.Studies also show that creative tasks like cooking can boost happiness.

When I was in college, I experienced a very challenging time. Not only was I dealing with the difficulties of academic life, but I was also struggling with financial hardship. I was so poor that I often found myself without food. There were days when I would wake up with just a few coins in my pocket, and those coins were usually just enough to buy four loaves of bread. After that, I would have no idea where my next meal would come from.
I was desperate to find a way to make money and decided to try my luck applying for a part-time job. I spent hours reading the newspaper, searching for job advertisements, but in vain.
Despite all these difficulties, I didn’t want to give up hope. I knew that if I kept pushing and refused to quit, I would eventually find a solution to my problems. So I stuck to looking for more opportunities to earn a living. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t land a single interview. The more I tried to get a job, the more depressed and hopeless I felt.
One day, while making phone calls to apply for yet another job, I noticed someone else waiting behind me for the pay phone. He seemed kind of impatient, pacing back and forth with his hands behind his back. Ignoring him, I continued to try calling several times but I couldn’t get through somehow.
After a while, he cleared his throat and said coldly, “Other people have to use the phone, too, you know.” It was a simple statement, but it was enough to push me over the edge. I turned to this stranger and shouted, “See this bag on the floor That has all my food in it! I don’t have a phone at home to call from! I’m sorry if your cell phone is broken, but whatever call you have to make is less important than my trying to come up with tomorrow’s meal!”
