Tokyo has a lot of cafes, but many don’t offer free WiFi or power outlets (插座). So, for the benefit of those with a computer in hand, a deadline around the corner, here are our top spots in the capital with free WiFi.
Coffee Valley
Coffee Valley is a small specialty coffee shop just a few minutes from Ikebukuro station. While the first floor has limited seating, there are outlets for each seat. Alpha Beta Coffee Club
Alpha Beta Coffee Club is not just a great spot for third-wave coffee, it also has an open platform perfect for watching the sunset. Though this might be smaller than the other cafes on the list, the pastries are tasty and the waiters are friendly. They also have some power outlets. However, there’s a two-hour policy, so it isn’t the place for long stays.
10° Cafe
10° Cafe is the perfect place for early birds. At 10° Cafe, each seat has power outlets while their counter seats offer a great view of the surrounding neighborhood. Their menu prices before 11 a.m. offer breakfast sets starting at ¥500, so if you’re on the hunt for a budget-friendly breakfast spot, this might just be the place.
Valley Park Stand
Open from early in the morning to late in the evening, there are tables with power outlets and comfortable seating. It’s spacious with lots of natural light a few steps away from the upper floor lawn of Miyashita Park. There is a menu with tea, coffee and various sandwiches and bites.

I met a beautiful soul yesterday. I went to work with my computer to a local cafe so that I could have dinner there. It was raining a bit this time and also I was among people. Sometimes when you work from home all day this is in itself a treat. And the magic of connection sometimes happens — a smile, someone offering you the newspaper, a short conversation with the staff, a peace dove flying past and lots of possibilities for love and kindness.
Well, magic did happen. I heard a man who was speaking with difficulty and very loud. I noticed he could not speak so clearly and he had some kind of impairment (损伤). As often happened, people looked at him-or avoided doing so-and then-as if embarrassed or afraid — looked down. In these cases I try to do the opposite. I imagined a person in these circumstances would want to feel included.
So I decided to deliberately look at him and smile. It was an instant! He looked at me, smiled and immediately said hello. With a combination of spoken and body language he asked if he could approach me. I agreed. He introduced me to his friend who taught sign language online and explained that they were both deaf, after which he even told me about his wife and how he loved teaching. I apologized for not knowing sign language and hoped I’d learnt. We still managed to have a beautiful conversation which made us all very happy. I’m sure we’ll meet again to experience the magic of being and being with others.
24. Why did the author go to the cafe yesterday
A. To find someone beautiful. B. To work and eat something.
C. To ask for a latest newspaper. D. To have a short talk with others.
25. How did the author react to the man with speaking difficulty
A. He pretended not to see him. B. He had a joke with him.
C. He looked and smiled at him. D. He laughed at him like others.
26. What’s the most important to a disabled person
A. Being treated in a normal way. B. Accepting help from people around.
CAvoiding the embarrassments in life. D. Having a friend in the same situation.
27. What could be the best title for the text
A. A Special Cafe B. A Broken Heart
C. Power of Sign Language D. Magic at the Cafe
C
Growing up in Georgia, Thanksgiving for me meant driving a couple hours south to my mom’s house in Augusta on Wednesday night and staying up late playing. First thing the next morning,at around 4 or 5 a.m., my mom would put the bird in the oven and roast it low and slow for eight hours, applying oil to it every 30 minutes and watching it like hawks. For this practice, for years I thought turkey was the absolute hardest thing to cook in the world.
I also thought that turkey was, on principle, meant to be dry. The thing is, roasting a great, juicy turkey isn’t as complicated(复杂的) as people make it out to be. For me, I’ve found that the best method is to just roast it like a chicken. No black magic.
Defrost your turkey (if it’s frozen). Ideally you’d let this happen gradually in a 40°F refrigerator. Bring your turkey to room temperature. A fridge-cold bird will not cook as evenly as a room-temperature bird. Truss(捆绑) your turkey, which will ensure even cooking. Season your turkey in the sink. This is very important. Most people season their turkeys straight in its roasting pan, leading to extra salt at the bottom. Another issue is that if you’re applying melted(融化的) butter and some of that drips off into the pan, the milk fats can burn, and the one thing we don’t want on Thanksgiving Day is for the smoke alarm to go off. Roast your turkey. Many recipes(食谱) call for a high start and a low finish. But I like to roast my turkey from start to finish at a moderate 350°F. Rest your turkey. Do not carve the bird until it’s rested for at least 30 minutes. Don’t worry, it’ll still be hot—better yet, the juices will have spread all over and you’ll be looking at the tenderest, juiciest turkey of your life.
28. How does the author introduce the topic
A. By raising a question. B. By giving an example.
C. By making some comments. D. By explaining a phenomenon.
29. What does the underlined word “Season” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Make use of. B. Sort out.
C. Separate something from. D. Add something to.
30. Why does the smoke alarm go off while making the turkey
A. The milk fats on the pan catch fire. B. The butter applied to the turkey melts.
C. The temperature of roasting the turkey is high. D. Some extra salt is left at the bottom of the pan.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. A simplest way to cook your turkey. B. A celebration for Thanksgiving Day.
C. Roasting turkey is a traditional custom. D. The turkey symbolizes Thanksgiving Day.
D
Companies are developing drone(无人机) delivery services. In 2013, Amazon, an online retailer, announced an experimental drone delivery service. Packages containing anything from toothpaste to a new smart phone would arrive at your front door by drone. The drone would land, drop your parcel, and fly away. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said at the time that the service would take four or five years to develop. But it’s been a little more than 10 years. “It will continue to take time.” Amazon added.
Widespread drone delivery could have a huge impact. But as Amazon’s struggles show, there are plenty of challenges, including the need for more warehouses(仓库) and concerns about airspace safety.
Alphabet, the parent company of Google, also has a drone delivery service called Wing. James Ryan Burgess is Wing’s CEO. You can imagine a future where there are delivery drone aircraft spread throughout a city, he says. Those aircraft can serve the community whenever somebody has a need to receive or send a package.
Wing’s drones can wirelessly charge at a landing pad when they return from a delivery. Routes are determined based on factors such as distance, and airspace rules. Deliveries are dropped in front of homes, which means human interaction(互动) is unnecessary.
Samaras is a professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He says that drone delivery could impact flying wildlife. And if drone delivery increases, providers will need space to ship and maintain drones. That means more warehouses. You have to heat, light, and power those warehouses. And that amount of energy reduces the benefits. This leads to an important question that people need to ask themselves: Do we want hundreds or thousands of drones over all of our cities
32. What do we know about Amazon’s drone delivery services
A. It won’t be put into market. B. It has brought in a huge profit.
C. It hasn’t developed as expected. D. It is well-received by customers.
33. What does paragraph 2 focus on about the drone delivery services
A. Their influences. B. Their advantages.
C. Their difficulties. D. Their functions.
34. What can ensure Wind’s drones work continuously
A. The regular routes. B. The wireless chargers.
C. No human interaction. D. The air space rules.
35. What’s professor Samaras’ attitude towards drone delivery service
A. Supportive. B. Unclear. C. Curious. D. Doubtful.

With my parents away on a business trip, I planned to spend a quiet weekend at home. But when my friend Chickie and Dom, invited me to join them for an afternoon at the beach, I was attracted. “I had an asthma(哮喘) attack yesterday, and it really tired me out,” I warned them. “So I’ll probably just lie out on the sand.”
A few hours later, relaxing under a sun umbrella after a picnic lunch, I was glad I’d come. Chickie and Dom went for a swim. They liked to go far out into the sea. I was bathed in the sun until I got too hot, then took a walk down to the shore.
For a few minutes I just let the waves lap around my legs. The ocean was smooth as glass. I could float on my back as if I were in a swimming pool, I thought, and did. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the gentle rocking.
After some time, I opened my eyes and looked around. How did I get so far from shore I hadn’t realized how quickly the sea was carrying me.
I started swimming as quick and hard as I could. Even so I wasn’t getting any closer, and it was becoming harder to breathe. I turned around, looking for help, but I seemed to be completely alone in the water. Far off on the sand I could see people packing up their belongings. It must be nearly five o’clock, I thought. That’s when the lifeguard went off duty.
A wave slapped(拍打) my face and I swallowed salt water. My chest was already burning as I struggled to breathe. In desperation I raised one hand and waved it to get the lifeguard’s attention. “I’ll never last till he reaches me,” I thought. “They’re all too far away. I can’t get myself heard here and nobody even sees me!”

第二节(满分25分)
Fortunately, two young men happened to swim by. “Help,” I managed to whisper. One of them grabbed my arm. The other grabbed his arm. Together they pulled me toward the shore. The lifeguard rushed into the water with his board. He tried to convince me that the water was shallow so that I could just stand. However, I shook my head. I was too exhausted to stand, much less walk. They laid me over the boar d. “You were caught in a tide,” the lifeguard said as the three of the man carried me onto the sand.
Chickie and Dom were waiting anxiously on the beach. They were scared when they saw me being carried out of the water. I showed my sincere gratitude to the two young men who saved me. And the lifeguard warned us to be careful while swimming and never swim alone. Chickie and Dom took care of me and made sure I was okay. It was a quiet reminder that one should always be careful and never underestimate the power of nature, even on a supposedly gentle day at the beach.
