第四部分 写作(共两节, 满分40分)
第一节(满分15分)
Dear schoolmates,
As president of the Students’ Union at Xinhua High School, I am writing to address a concerning issue prevalent among our students — skipping breakfast, which is alarming considering the vital role breakfast plays.
Breakfast provides the necessary nutrients and energy to start our day. It fuels both our bodies and minds. Neglecting breakfast can lead to distraction in class, fatigue and even long-term health mon reasons why some students skip breakfast may include rushing to get to school, lack of appetite or time in the morning.
To tackle this issue, we can make small changes to our routines, such as waking up earlier to prepare breakfast or choosing quick and nutritious options like fruit, yogurt, or whole-grain cereal.
In conclusion, let’s value our well-being by starting our day with a nutritious breakfast.
The Students’ Union
第二节(满分25分)
Ms. Hawking frowned and said that’s incorrect. My heart sank. I couldn’t believe I had made such a stupid mistake. Nathan, on the other hand, looked confident. He spelled his word correctly and was declared the winner. I felt a mix of disappointment and frustration. But then I forced myself to smile and congratulate Nathan. After all, he had beaten me fair and square.
After class, I sobbed when I felt a hand on my arm. I looked up to see Nathan standing there. He said, “Hey, don’t be too sad. It’s just a spelling bee. You’re still a great speller.” I was surprised by his kindness. We started chatting and found that we actually had more in common than we thought. That day, we became friends. We realized that even though we were rivals in the spelling bee, there was no reason we couldn’t be friends outside of it. And from that day on, our friendship grew.

W: How is your broken leg after the operation
M: Oh, Dr. Smith, it’s recovering well. Yesterday I managed to get to the school and go back. The medicine you gave me really works.
W: That’s not bad. It’s only a month since the accident on the field.
Text 2
M: Jenny, after you finish those reports, can you start arranging a meeting and ordering some paper for the company
W: OK, no problem. I should be able to get started in a couple of hours.
Text 3
M: Have you seen this author’s latest best-seller
W: I’ve just finished it.
M: Oh, what do you think of it
W: It was a great improvement over the last one.
Text 4
W: I’m sorry. When did you see her last
M: We walked into the grocery store together. Then I followed someone thought was her. But when I caught up with her, I realized she wasn’t my mother.
W: Don’t worry. I’ll make an announcement to call her to the front desk.
Text 5
M: Hi, I’d like to make a toy donation.
W: Oh, great! Thanks. Wow, these are great toy cars!

Text 6
W: Why are you going to the top floor of the science building with a basketball and a volleyball, Leonardo That looks very strange.
M: We have to recreate Galileo’s famous study for physics class. Alessandro is standing at the bottom with a watch waiting for me to drop them.
W: Cool! Which one do you think will hit the ground first
M: Don’t you know Galileo proved that they’ll hit the ground at the same time, even though the basketball is heavier. I did it once, but the watch fell, so I have to do it again.
Text 7
W: Have you seen my garden yet It’s my first time growing one and, so far, it’s going really well. I didn’t have any time before, but I decided it was time to develop a new hobby.
M: That sounds interesting. What are you growing
W: Mostly fruits and some grains because I don’t like eating most vegetables. I know vegetables and grains are healthier than fruits but they definitely don’t taste as good.
M: That’s true! So, what are you doing right now
W: I’m just watering the strawberry plants and the orange tree. I also wanted to grow a pear tree, but the dry climate here is not right for it.
M: That sounds really cool.
W: Maybe you can have a try in your garden as well.
M: I’ll consider it.
Text 8
W: Please put your name there. Thank you very much. I hope you enjoyed your vehicle during your trip.
M: I did. I parked it right there outside the window, by the sign in your parking lot.
W: We have already inspected it. It looks good, with no damage or any other issues. Please wait here while I get your initial security payment.
M: My wife and I are in no rush, thank you. Actually, we just booked a taxi to drive us to the airport. The guy is still 20 minutes away, so take your time. We’ll be here for a while.
W: All right. We have a question, sir. Would you be OK with receiving your money in Canadian dollars
M: Actually, we are flying to Australia before going back to America. Can you do Australian dollars
W: Unfortunately not, but I’m sure you can change money at the airport.
M: All right, then. Canadian dollars will do.
Text 9
M: I know it has been hard hiking through this river valley in the mud and the rain, but it is worth it to see a view like that, isn’t it
W: Yeah, it’s amazing! The sun has finally come out. It lights up the entire valley in all sorts of shades of green. That waterfall is the most unique one that I’ve ever seen until now.
M: Beautiful, isn’t it The water is surrounded by a rainbow! There’ s not blue water in sight!
W: Just red, yellow and orange! It looks like the colors are dancing as the water pours down.
M: Shall we sit down here I’ve packed us an amazing lunch. We can have a bite to eat and enjoy that beautiful view.
W: Great idea. Wow! Egg sandwiches on brown bread! I love those!
M: I know you do. I’ve been working with you long enough to know what your favorite sandwiches are! After all, we have lunch together every weekday.
W: Right, before we eat, let’s take a e on, stand close to me with the waterfall in the background …smile...Here we go!
M: Can we eat now I’m starving. We need our strength to walk back to the town yet!
W: Oh yes! I forgot about that!
Text 10
Good morning, all of my fellow Barlow High School students! It’s Jenny back again with the daily announcements. Today, we have an emergency fire preparation drill starting in just two hours. The bell will ring at 9: 55 a. m., which means you’ll have five minutes to get out of the classrooms, library, or cafeteria and into the parking lot in front of the school. The top two classes that organize the most quickly and neatly will be awarded our safety prize. At 2: 00 p. m., before the end of the school day, Headmaster Jones will announce the winners of the recent charity competition. Over 100 students, including myself, have participated in gathering donations and funding from people and businesses in the community to help our school. We’ve all seen this school suffer from a lack of funding during the recent economic crash. But thanks to an admirable group of student body members, we’ll start to turn that problem around. The top ten students to bring in funding for the school will each receive a prize for their contribution, but this award will be kept a surprise until 2: 00 p. m. For now, that’s all from me. The next speaker is your headmaster with important information on this week’s storm and our homecoming football game. Go Eagles!

Edinburgh is famous for its many museums where you can learn its rich history.
Museum on the Mound
Located in the heart of Edinburgh’s city center, this appealing museum takes a fresh look at money — and much, much more. You will see coins and banknotes from over the ages, including the first Scottish banknote printed in 1727. There are also interesting interactive displays and you can even try your hand at opening a safe!
The Writers’ Museum
It is housed in the beautiful Lady Stair’s House, a category A listed building. The collection celebrates the legacy of Scotland’s literary contributions, with special emphasis given to Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and Robert Burns. Our Dynamic Earth
It celebrates the beauty of the earth via technology. Interactive exhibits allow visitors to experience earthquakes, the ocean floor, ice ages and mountains by the use of computer software. Particularly interesting is the “tour” around the eleven Earthscapes. It is educational fun for the whole family and can serve as a good introduction to concepts surrounding the formation of the planet and the creatures we share the earth with.
National Museum of Scotland
The diverse collections here include the history of Scotland with exhibitions of international interest. The natural world, science and technology, discoveries, art, and world cultures are all explored. There are interactive elements and activities to suit children of all ages, including science experiments and musical instruments.

I had a great time with the film Turning Red, which follows Meilin, a thirteen-year-old girl who suddenly begins turning into a giant red panda.
The film was set in 2002 when I would’ve been around Meilin’s age. It was a joy for me to watch a film that I could relate to. The film illustrates the push-pull that many immigrant families face: how much of their culture to keep and how much to assimilate(融入). There are beautiful traces of Chinese culture throughout this film, including gorgeous food, time around the table, relationships with extended family, and more.
In the film, women in Meilin’s family suffer a curse(诅咒). As soon as they begin to blossom into womanhood, they transform into a giant red panda whenever they express any strong emotion. Thus, they have learned that emotional repression is the way to go. It was beautiful to watch this young girl choose the different path of emotional wellness instead of holding back her feelings.
It’s not a surprise that the director Domee Shi, who is around my age, chose this plotline. Many people my age are on that similar path Meilin finds herself on. We honor our parents and what they have done for us, but we’re also choosing to be more emotionally healthy and trying to live differently than we were taught.
The part of Turning Red I particularly loved is the ending. Though Meilin’s mom, grandma, and aunts see that it’s possible to integrate their red pandas into their lives, they don’t choose that path. Instead, they choose to bottle their pandas up once again. However, they do get a new perspective on this young, groundbreaking girl. It’s such a sweet reminder that not everyone can go on the same journey toward emotional health, and that’s okay.
If all of them had embraced their pandas, I think the ending would’ve felt incredibly cheese and taken away some of the power of the story. So we get a conclusion that is satisfying and heart-warming without being too much of a fairy tale.
24. Why did the author enjoy watching Turning Red
A. She found a connection with the story.
B. She followed a life path similar to its director.
C. She adored the appealing design of the red panda.
D. She valued its emphasis on the beautiful Chinese culture.
25. What does the underlined word “repression” in the third paragraph mean
A. Disturbance. B. Control. C. Wellness. D. Expression.
26. What does the author think of the ending of the film
A. Bittersweet. B. Idealized. C. Realistic. D. Cheesy.
27. What is the central dilemma faced by Meilin in Turning Red
A. “Can I embrace my true self ” B. “Should I prioritize my family ”
C. “Can I uncover the curse’s secret ” D. “Should I explore diverse cultures ”
C
I’m in a coffee shop in Manhattan and I’m about to become the most disliked person in the room. First, I’m going to interrupt the man reading quietly near the window and ask for a drink of his latte. Next, I’m going to ask the line of people waiting to pay if I can cut to the front of the queue. This is how I chose to spend my last vacation. Here’s why.
Growing up, all I ever heard about was “EQ.” It was the mid-1990s, and psychologist Daniel Goleman had just popularized the concept of emotional intelligence. Unlike IQ, which tracked conventional measures of intelligence like reasoning and recall, EQ measured the ability to understand other people — to listen, to empathize (共情), and to appreciate.
My mother, an elementary school principal, prized brains and hard work, but she placed a special emphasis on Goleman’s new idea. To her, EQ was the elixir (万能药) that separated the good students from the great after they left school. She was determined to send me into the adult world with as much of this elixir as possible.
But when I finally began my first job, I noticed a second elixir in the pockets of some of my colleagues. It gave their opinions extra weight and their decisions added impact. Strangest of all, it seemed like the anti-EQ: Instead of knowing how to make others feel good, this elixir gave people the courage to do the opposite — to say things others didn’t want to hear.
This was assertiveness (魄力). It boiled down to the command of a single skill: the ability to have uncomfortable conversations. Assertive people — those with high “AQ”— ask for things they want, decline things they don’t, provide constructive feedback, and engage in direct confrontation (对峙) and debate.
A lifetime improving my EQ helped me empathize with others, but it also left me overly sensitive to situations where I had to say or do things that might make others unhappy. While I didn’t avoid conflict, I was always frustrated by my powerlessness when I had to say or do something that could upset someone. This is my problem and I’m working on it.
28. Why did the author act that way in the coffee shop
A. To improve a skill. B. To test a concept.
C. To advocate a new idea. D. To have a unique vacation.
29. What do we know about the author’s mother
A. She thought little of IQ. B. She popularized Goleman’s idea.
C. She was a strict mother and principal. D. She valued EQ as the key to greatness.
30. What does the word “it” underlined in the fourth paragraph refer to
A. EQ. B. AQ. C. Empathy. D. Courage.
31. According to the passage, those with high EQ but low AQ are likely to be ______.
A. successful leaders B. people pleasers C. terrible complainers D. pleasure seekers
D
California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s, according to a study to be published Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor(因素).
The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than 46, 000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent.
Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick McIntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters targeted big trees. Housing development pushed into the woods. Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources(资源).
But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one between 2001 and 2010, McIntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees that was evident even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development.
The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into account such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness of soil, and the timing of snowmelt(融雪).
Since the 1930s, McIntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season.
32. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. The seriousness of big-tree loss in California.
B. The increasing variety of California big trees.
C. The distribution of big trees in California forests.
D. The influence of farming on big trees in California.
33. Which of the following is well-intentioned but may be bad for big trees
A. Ecological studies of forests. B. Banning woodcutting.
C. Limiting housing development. D. Fire control measures.
34. What is a major cause of the water shortage according to McIntyre
A. Inadequate snowmelt. B. A longer dry season.
C. A warmer climate. D. Dampness of the air.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. California’s Forests: Where Have All the Big Trees Gone
B. Cutting of Big Trees to Be Prohibited in California Soon
C. Why Are the Big Trees Important to California Forests
D. Patrick McIntyre: Grow More Big Trees in California

Another quote from Nelson Mandela, “Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.” It’s in choosing to get back up after we’ve fallen for the first time or the 50th time that we strengthen our character.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I loved the spelling bee (拼字比赛). I trained every day after school, the dictionary pages rippling softly in the breeze. But I had never thought my arch-enemy in the spelling bee could become my friend.
Opening my eyes on Friday morning, I felt the hairs on my arm stand up. I glanced at my alarm clock — it’s only 6:27. I usually woke up at 7:01, which meant I had an extra thirty-four minutes to study. I was the best spellers in my class. I wanted to win the bee at Meadowbrook Middle School and beat my arch-enemy, Nathan Fortescue.
Nathan just read many science and math books. Really, he wasn’t a speller at heart — he’s a mathematician. Nathan and I had nothing in common except being good spellers, but since he’s a good speller without even trying, it didn’t count.
I walked into the kitchen, finding Dad cooking breakfast. He served me some porridge. I thanked him and told him the spelling test and my anxiety. My father gave me a quiz. Those words “dexterous, sesquipedalian, truncate” didn’t trouble me at all. Finally came the word “judgment”. “Easy, J-U-D-G-E-M-E-N-T.” I answered quickly, without any thought.
Dad shook his head. Not believing in him, I headed for my room, referred to the dictionary and marched back with a frown. Before parting, he told me that I should thank him, because I would probably get the word in the test.
As soon as I shut the classroom door behind me, I heard a voice from the back of the room. “You are looking pale now, and I’m afraid that you may miss the spelling bee.” Nathan smiled as he closed a giant book with dancing numbers on the cover.
“I bet a literature word will make you out on the first round.” I replied.
As Ms. Hawking walked into the room, she explained the rules—one missed, and you were out—and the spelling test began. After four rounds, only Nathan and I were left. “Olivia, your word is ‘algorithm.’” said Ms. Hawking. I hadn’t heard that word before, but I spelt it A-L-G-O-R-H-Y-H-M.
