第二节(满分25分)
My cousin had to repeatedly remind me to keep patient. He taught me how to adjust my pole based on the movements of the fish and how to determine the best time to lift the pole when a fish was on the hook. Under his guidance, I calmed down gradually, staying focused to wait patiently. Then suddenly, I felt a jerk of my pole. A surge of thrill sweeping over me, I pulled the fishing pole out of water and I caught my first fish! So excited was I that I even gave a jump in the air. It was a small one, but it was a milestone for me!
When we finally left the lake, I had caught three fish! Thrilled and fulfilled, I skipped all the way home with my cousin, telling him it was a pity that I had been missing out on so much by avoiding this simple outdoor activity before. Since then, I have become a passionate fisherman and love spending time outdoors, appreciating the simple pleasure of life. Fishing has taught me to be patient and persistent and most importantly, it has also taught me a lesson that we should not miss out on these opportunities just because they are simple or just we do not know how to do them well.

The Master of Arts Program in the Humanities(MAPH)at the University of Chicago is designed to allow you the freedom to either focus on one academic discipline or explore interdisciplinary (跨学科的) interests that may not fit well within a traditional MA program. This advantage, combined with our strong support, can help you take the next step in your professional and academic life in a short amount of time — more than 90% of our students graduate in 9 months.
The Value of This MA Program
Master’s degrees, obtained after finishing MA programs, have become increasingly common for admission to PhD programs and it is not unusual for an MA degree to serve as a requirement for entry into many professional fields. MAPH also allows students to complete intensive academic work and prepares them to continue into further graduate study or a career that much faster.
Academic Support
MAPH students are provided with academic guidance from the moment they arrive on campus. Most often this support comes from the following sources:
·All MAPH students take a required fall quarter course taught by the MAPH Director.
·Students are placed in groups of 10-12 and work closely with an assigned post-doctoral Instructional Professor or Teaching Fellow throughout the year.
·Over the winter and spring quarters, MAPH students work closely with a faculty member who has agreed to serve as their thesis advisor.
·Three MAPH Mentors, recent MAPH graduates who work as staff members, are available to meet with students to discuss course selection.
21.What is the highlight of the MAPH
A.Interest. B . Expertise.
C.Discipline. D. Flexibility.
22.What is the potential use of obtaining the MAPH
A.Pursuing a profitable career. B. Applying for a PhD program.
C.Publishing loads of paper work. D. Choosing undergraduate study.
23.What kind of support is available for all MAPH students
A. Course by the director of the program. B. Group work with the MAPH director.
C. Advice on thesis writing in fall quarter. D. Help with course books from Mentors.

“I am so sorry,” I tearfully said to my principal investigator (PI), explaining I would not be able to return to work as originally planned. Before I became a parent, I had assumed a baby would fit right into my academic plans. But now, as the end of my leave approached, I realized I couldn’t simply carry on as I always had. I was worried this decision might signal the end of my academic career — but I felt I had no other choice.
Thankfully, my PI had more foresight. He told me I didn’t need to resign and that he could offer me a contract that would allow me to contribute to our project from afar. It proved to be an absolute career lifeline tailored to me.
Then five years after stepping back from academia, I felt ready to re-enter more fully. Because I had been able to keep my hand in during my time away, the prospect was much less daunting than it would have been otherwise. I ended up landing a lecturer position that allowed me to slowly ease back in, focusing on teaching and scholarship with research taking a back seat. And when, 4 years on, a senior lectureship position came up in the very group I had left a decade earlier, the timing was right. With both of my children in “big school”, I was ready to really put my foot down on the career accelerator. I got the job.
Now, 6 months into my new role, I am happy to be right where it all began, with involvement in so many interesting projects. But what truly made the difference for me was the offer of what I needed during that time away. I hope more institutions and PIs can come up with creative provisions (条款) for those in their workforce who don’t want to give up their careers but want-or-need to take extended periods of leave. And to those who are taking such breaks, or considering it, know that returning is possible. Above all, on both sides: Please do not discount extended leavers. We have a lot to offer — if we are given the chance.
24.What can we learn about the author from the first paragraph
A.Her path to PI began when she became a parent.
B.She struck a balance between work and family.
C.She had intended to stick to her academic plans.
D.She chose to prioritize her career over her family.
25.Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “daunting” in paragraph 3
A.Fearsome. B. Realistic.
C. Regretful. D. Promising.
26.What contributed most to her success according to the author
A.Academic researches. B.Supportive work environment.
C.Interest in the projects. D.Involvement in engaging projects.
27.What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage
A. To analyse. B. To entertain.
C. To report. D.To promote.

Scientists at MIT have managed to change ordinary spinach (菠菜) plants into natural sensors which can find chemicals used in bombs. The secret to giving spinach these special powers is nanotechnology (纳米技术), which is scientific area that deals with making or changing things that are extremely tiny.
“Ordinary spinach plants can be found everywhere and easy to store; like other plants, they normally take in carbon dioxide gas,” the scientists say. “But actually they can sense small changes of soil and water potential and respond to them. If we tap into this point, there is a wealth of information to access.” That’s what the scientists use to power their tiny experiments.
For this experiment, the scientists placed two different kinds of tiny nano-materials into spinach plants. To get them into the plants, the scientists put a liquid containing them on the bottom of the plant’s leaves. As part of its natural process, the spinach plant pulls water through its roots and into its leaves. If the water contains certain chemicals used in bombs, the tiny sensors in the leaves make the nano-tubes, which, along with the sensors, were placed into the spinach plant before by the scientists, produce a slightly special kind of light. By watching the plant constantly using a camera attached to a cheap computer, the scientists set up a system that can send a warning email if chemicals from explosives are found in the water.
The computer the scientists used is about the size of a playing card. They say that in the future, their system could even use a cell phone with its camera changed slightly. Discovering chemicals used in bombs is just one of the many uses the researchers are exploring. They have used such plants to discover several other dangerous chemicals as well. From their point of view, there’s no doubt that in the future, such systems could give farmers specific information about the health of the land and water on their farms.
28. Why do the scientists use plants to do the experiment
A. They are common in the daily life. B. They are environmentally responsive.
C. They absorb much carbon dioxide gas. D. They are small in size and easy to store.
29. What’s the function of the carbon nano-tubes placed into spinach plants
A. To control the camera. B. To contain the liquid.
C. To fix the tiny sensors. D. To give off plant light.
30. What can we say about the application of the experiment
A. It’s diverse. B. It’s unexpected.
C. It’s limited. D. It’s cheap.
31. What’s the suitable title for the text
A. Spinach Is Sensitive to Chemicals in Bombs
B. Spinach Sends Warning Emails Using Nanotech
C. Nanotech Helps Spinach Grow Healthily
D. Nanotech Protects Spinach from Danger
D
If you’ve scrolled through your Facebook feed recently, you may have noticed something surprising: lots and lots of short videos.
What makes this “Reels” feature strange is that it is hugely addictive, which I know quite well from my own personal experience. Last Friday, I took a break and hit on one short clip of someone making dinner and, well, the next time I looked up it was 20 minutes later and the blank document on my computer monitor was confirming to me that my work was still not done.
However, as silly as it seems, Reelsis actually super important, and is at the centre of a major battle between the world’s largest tech firms. The format (格式) was first pioneered by TikTok-the Chinese-owned video app that has taken the world by storm since it launched in 2016. Today, TikTok has around 23 million UK users every month-including basically every person you know under the age of 25. And that fact has made Facebook and its parent company, Meta, very nervous indeed. As TikTok has continued to boom, Facebook has actually fallen in popularity among “Gen Z”. The reason Tik Tok has proven such a powerful challenger to Facebook’s social media dominance is almost entirely down to these sorts of short-form videos.
The format is almost perfectly optimised to be as addictive as possible: Tik Tok’s app shows you a short-form video, and if you don’t like it, you can simply swipe it away and another one will start playing instantly. And because it is portrait, not landscape, videos look “right” when viewed on your phone. What’s also smart is that TikTok’s algorithm (算法) picks videos for you based on what you actually watch, and not what you say you want.
Facebook isn’t the only app trying to do what TikTok does so well. Instagram, which is owned by Facebook’s parent company Meta, has integrated Reels even more aggressively into its app. And even Google is nervous, launching its own TikTok-style video section of YouTube(which it owns)a couple of years ago. As things stand, though TikTok currently maintains a healthy lead in the category, both YouTube and Facebook have deep pockets-so expect to see even more Reels and Shorts popping up in your feed as this intense battle continues to rage. You won’t be able to take your eyes off them.
32. Why did the author mention his own experience in paragraph 2
A. To illustrate the feature of short videos.
B. To stress the importance of short videos.
C. To prove his preference to short videos.
D. To introduce the functions of short videos.
33. What do we know about TikTok according to the passage
A. It has shown the trend of the fall in popularity among “Gen Z”.
BIt is perceived as a potential threat to Facebook’s social media dominance.
CIts number of registered UK users has reached 23 million since it launched in 2016.
D. It underestimates the essential role of short videos in competition with large tech firms.
34. What makes the short videos on TikTok App so popular
A. The beautiful visual effects.B. The high video quality.
C. The random recommendation.D. The quick switch between videos.
35. What is the message conveyed in the last paragraph
A. The short videos have a profound impact on our daily life.
B. TikTok seems to be losing its advantage over short videos in the short run.
C. YouTube and Facebook may encounter financial difficulties in developing Shorts.
D. A growing number of tech firms have engaged in fierce competition for the short video market.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In my childhood, under the influence of my elder brother and my peers in the neighborhood, I tried a number of outdoor activities. Of course, I was not so taken by all of them, whether I was doing them for the first time or continuously. However, fate had its own plans in store. You never know when an outdoor activity will change my life.
The name of this activity is “fishing”. About ten years ago, I didn't really like the idea of sitting on the bank of a lake or river, spending long hours under the sun's ultraviolet rays, which can cause sunburns and skin damage, and anxiously anticipating some fish to be kind to take my bait(诱饵). In fact, I used to think of this outdoor activity as some kind of “hide-and-seek-game” that is popular with most young kids, except that it was much harder, because I could see my “prey (猎物)” only after catching it.
However, all that changed when I paid a visit to my aunt in the countryside during a summer holiday. I was finally convinced by one of my cousins to accompany him to a nearby lake in order to do some fishing practice with him. In fact, he even assured me that fish would eat my baits. So I agreed and went to the lake expecting to catch some fish. Before throwing my fishing line into the water, my cousin did some tricks attaching some sort of food to my fishing pole.
Learning to fish in a river or lake can be challenging for the beginners like me. The act of dropping a line is easy, but being a successful fisher is hard. That's why they call it fishing but not catching. But with practice and patience, it can become easier over time. Patience is essential in lake fishing. It may take some time to find the right spot or lure (鱼饵) that will attract fish.
