Playing basketball isn't ladylike. That's what Jewell Chapman's high school headmaster told her in 1961 when he was against the girls' basketball program.
“We were very discouraged,” said Chapman,a forward(前锋)for her high school team of Des Moines.
Nearly 50 years later,Chapman is back on the playground. She's 62 and plays for “Hot Pink Grannies”,joining about 10 other women on a team whose uniforms are black trousers and hot pink socks. They play in the Iowa Granny Basketball League.
It's one of dozens of basketball leagues for women over 50 that have arisen across the country. For some,it's a chance to exercise and meet people; for others,it's a once-refused chance to make up.
“You see more and more elderly women's teams taking part in state and national competitions,” said Michael Rogers,a professor in sports studies at Wichita State University.“In the future it will be something common to have leagues like this.”
Yearly surveys by the National Sporting Goods Association show the number of women aged 55 and older who play basketball at least 50 times a year has grown from 16,000 in 1995 to nearly 131,000 ten years later.
The women on the Hot Pink Grannies are good-natured but competitive when game time comes.
“I think I'm tough”,says Colleen Pulliam,69,showing off her strong arms at her challengers in a game against “Strutters”,known for their bright yellow socks.
Granny Basketball Leagues and similar groups spread quickly through much of the country, including California,Louisiana,New Mexico,Pennsylvania and Washington,D.C.
1.Which is right about Chapman?
A.She thinks playing basketball isn't ladylike.
B.She is now 62 years old and feels discouraged.
C.She plays basketball again about 50 years later.
D.She is a forward in the Hot Pink Grannies.
由文章第三段“Nearly 50 years later,Chapman is back on the playground.” A项“not ladylike”是60年代Chapman高中校长的认知;B项“feels discouraged”和D项“a forward in the Hot Pink Grannies”犯了移花接木的错误。
2.The underlined sentence “it's a once-refused chance to make up” in the fourth paragraph means .
A.it is chance to realize their old dream
B.it is chance to take part in sports
C.it is chance to earn a reputation

3.Who is probably a player of “Hot Oink Grannies”?
A.Des Moines. B.Colleen Pulliam.
C.Michael Rogers. D.Strutters.

For each working person, occupied with endless things to do, you can always find that more things are not part of your job, such as other colleagues asking for your help or bosses making new demands. 1 In fact, just by doing the following three steps, you can usually make yourself and the other person comfortable while refusing them.
●Listen attentively.
What you need to do is stop what you're doing, and carefully listen to what they say. Even if your time is limited, it is best for you to do so. 2 In this way, even if you eventually refuse them, they will understand that you are not available. In addition, this willing-to-help attitude is also a helping hand of leadership.
●Start with a conclusion when refusing.
There is a saying goes like “People tend to judge others by results.” 3 We all hope that other people will come to a conclusion quickly, but when we speak, we instinctively start from the beginning of the story and the other person usually does not have so much patience to hear you finish your speaking, and by the time you come to the conclusion, their attention has long gone.
If you want to refuse somebody, just tell them NO, and then explain the reasons why.
● 4
Maybe you really don't have the time to listen to the other person's request. For example, you have to get off work on time that day and the work at hand is urgent. In situations like this, don't just tell the other person that you don't have the time. 5 In addition,if you have finished listening to the other person's needs and finally choose to refuse him, you can also recommend to him a person who you feel can help him.
In a word, refusal is inevitable, but the way of refusal is optional.
A.Provide an alternative solution.
B.How can we reasonably refuse them?
C.This principle can also be applied to daily conversations.
D.It is polite to offer help without hesitation at his or her request.
E.The point is to let the other person see that you are willing to help.
F.Instead, you should give them some time when you would be available.
G.An inappropriate refusal may cause great harm to your working life.

2.E [根据空处上文“What you need to do is stop what you're doing, and carefully listen to what they say.Even if your time is limited,it is best for you to do so”可知,你需要做的是停止你正在做的事情,仔细听他们说,即使你的时间有限;结合常识可知,此举是让他人知道你愿意帮助他们,故E项与此处匹配。]
3.C [根据该部分的标题“Start with a conclusion when refusing”可知,该部分主要论述“从结论开始拒绝”这一方法;根据空处下文“We all hope that other people will come to a conclusion quickly, but when we speak,we instinctively start from the beginning of the story and the other person usually does not have so much patience to hear you finish your speaking, and by the time you come to the conclusion, their attention has long gone”可知,我们都希望别人很快就会说出结论,但当我们说话时,我们本能地会从故事的开始说起,他人通常没有那么多耐心听你说完,在你得出结论的时候,他们的注意力早已经不在了。
4.A [根据文章结构以及空处所在的位置可知,该空为小标题;根据该部分中的“In addition,if you have finished listening to the other person's needs and finally choose to refuse him,you can also recommend to him a person who you feel can help him”可知,如果你已经听完了对方的需求,最后选择拒绝他时,你也可以向他推荐一个你觉得可以帮助他的人。
5.F [根据空处上文“In situations like this, don't just tell the other person that you don't have the time”可知,在这种情况下,不要仅仅告诉对方你没有时间。

A
There have certainly been records that have been hugely popular and some of those have had a message. Can there be many songs that really did change the world? Did they really change the hearts and minds of ordinary people?
There is one,Goettingen, which did,but it's hardly known now.
Even though France and Germany are neighbors, there was bad feeling between them 50 years ago as a result of World War Ⅱ.Into this area of hatred and anger stepped a singer with a gentle voice.
Barbara was her stage name. She took it from her Russian grandmother. She was born in Paris in 1930.She was Jewish and so a target (目标)for the Nazis. But,twenty years after the end of the Second World War,she travelled to the German city Goettingen. She fell in love with the city and its people and recorded the song Goettingen, first in French and then in German.
It moved her German audience at the theatre. The song became a hit.A street was named after her.The city gave its Medal of Honor to her.The song's popularity made an important contribution to repairing France-Germany relations.
One of the people in the audience was a student by the name of Gerhard Schroeder. He later became Chancellor of Germany. He said: “I was a college student when she came to sing.It went to our hearts, the start of a wonderful friendship between our countries.”
Listening to the song today,it's easy to understand its attraction then.It is still a beautiful song of love, although it is a bit sad in parts.Barbara had much to be sad about. She was extremely frightened by the war.
In Germany, she was loved for the love she had given to the people. In France, she was a star.Streets were named after her there, too.A stamp had her face on it.When she died in 1997,250 thousand people went to the funeral (葬礼).
Lionel Jospin, who served as Prime Minister of France from 1997 to 2002,once said: “Barbara was a woman who knew suffering and understood the suffering of others.”

People all need friends because nobody wants to be lonely and a friend can help you in good and bad times. You have made friends since childhood, but you still don't know who your true friends are. Here are some signs to tell you if your friend is a true friend:
Always honest
Honesty is important to keep a relationship alive.A true friend always tells you the truth. It may be hard sometimes but lying can destroy a friendship. It is important that your friend speaks honestly and never makes up stories.

There are always periods in your life when you have problems or difficulties.A true friend will always have time to listen to your problems and give advice. It may not be able to offer a solution to your problems but the fact that your friend made time to listen is a sign he/she cares for you.Your friend is not a true friend if he/she can never make time for you when you are in trouble. You also need to be reasonable and accept that your friend also has other things to do so he/she can't always listen immediately to your problems.
Always respectful (尊敬的)
