Dear Victor:
I am a college student. Nowadays games on the net are very popular with college students. Some of my roommates are very interested in them. They not only play games in their free time, but also keep talking about them at night when lights are off, and they regard games as part of life. I’ve begged them to give it up, but they wouldn’t listen to me. It has become a rather big problem. Should I report it to our teachers or do something else?
Ted
Dear Ted:
Drop it. Your roommates, as grown-ups, can do whatever they want with their time so long as it doesn’t break school rules or violate(妨碍) other people’s interests.
Playing perhaps gives these students relaxation from hard study. If they play too often, have little time to study, and they will reap what they have sown, but you will not. Reporting to the teachers would only harm your good name in your dormitory(宿舍). However, you have rights to ask your roommates to be quiet when you need sleep. If they aren’t angry with you, they will stop talking. But be polite and friendly. Perhaps, in return, join them in a game or two.

Most people want to be happy, but few know how to find happiness. Money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. Aristotle, a Greek thinker, said, “Happiness depends upon ourselves.” In other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.
The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future—for example, getting into college or getting a good job—that we fail to enjoy the present. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives.
Another secret to living a happy life is to be active and have hobbies where you forget your problems and time. Many people experience this dancing, or playing a sport, such as swimming. You can forget about your problems, and not only think about the activity. Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel happier, do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to buy food for an elderly person, or simply help out around the house by washing the dishes.
6. The passenger gives us ____ pieces of advice on happiness.
A. one B. two C. three D. four
7. The second paragraph tells us that ____.
A. the more friends you have, the happier you will be
B. we shouldn’t think about our future
C. happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life
D. some people fail to live a happy life
8. Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage?
A. Reading a good book B. Traveling to a foreign country
C. Playing a sport D. Spending time with close friends
9. The writer thinks that ____.
A. everyone knows how to live a happier life
B. it’s wrong to spend time on work
C. hobbies take up too much time
D. doing good things for someone can make you happier
10. The best title of the passage is ____.
A. Money Makes You Happy
B. The Secrets of Happiness
C. Ideas for Helping Other People to Be Happy
D. Good Friends Make You Happy

When I was a little kid, a father was like the night in the fridge. Every house had one, but no one really knew what either of them did once the door was shut.
My dad left the house every morning and always seemed glad to see every one again at night. He opened the jar of pickets(咸菜) when no one else at home could. He was the only one in the house who wasn’t afraid to go into the basement by himself.
Whenever it rained, he got the car and brought it around to the door. When anyone was sick, he went out to get the prescription filled. He set mousetraps. He cut back the roses so the thorns wouldn’t hurt you when you came to the front door. He oiled my roller skates, and they went faster. When I got my bike, he ran alongside me for at least a thousand miles until I got the hang of it. He signed all my report and my cards. He took a lot of pictures, but was never in them. He tightened up Mother’s sagging(松垂的)clothesline every week or so.
I was afraid of everyone else’s father, but not my own.
Whenever I played house, the mother doll had a lot to do. I never knew what to do with the daddy doll, so I had him say, “I’m going off to work mow,” and threw him under the bed.
When I was nine years old, my father didn’t get up one morning and go to work, he went to the hospital and died the next day.
There were a lot of people in the house who brought all kinds of good food and cakes. We had never had so much company before.
He never did anything, I didn’t know his leaving would hurt so much.

B. the writer missed her father very much after his death.
C. there were always a lot of people in the writer’s house.
D. the father was afraid of her father.
