There are many unique festivals around the world. Here are some of them.
Las Fallas, Spain
Las Fallas is one of Spain’s strangest and craziest festivals. The focus of this festival is to create and destroy dolls. These dolls are lifelike and usually make fun of dishonest politicians and famous people in Spain. Many dolls are several feet tall. They remain complete until March 19th,after which men fill them with fireworks. All the streetlights are turned off and the dolls are set on fire on March 19th.
Day of the Dead, Mexico
Day of the Dead is traditionally celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November in Mexico. This festival celebrates the lives of loved ones around you who have died. Celebrations can take a humorous tone as celebrants remember funny events about the dead. Toys are brought for the dead children and bottles of wine for adults.
Mardi Gras, U.S.A.
This day can occur anytime between February 3rd and March 9th,depending on when Easter is held that year. It is also called Fat Tuesday, reflecting the practice of eating richer and fatty foods. Other practices include wearing masks and parades, etc.

A Japanese company is developing a pair of smart glasses that can help those with visual or comprehension problems to read written text more easily. Called the Oton Glass, the glasses are meant to translate text into sound using two cameras and an earpiece, both fitted to its frame.
Half of the lens(镜片) is a mirror that reflects the wearer’s eyes back to the first camera, which tracks eye movement. The other camera captures the text. Wearers use the glasses by staring at the text they can’t read and blinking(眨眼) to trigger the glasses. Then the captured words are sent to a cloud system, which processes the text and turns it into sound played through the earpiece. If the system is unable to identify the words, the images are sent to a remote worker who can deal with them.
The Oton Glass lead designer,Keisuke Shimakage, started working on the glasses in 2012 to aid his father, who had developed dyslexia,a condition that makes it difficult for someone to read and spell. While his father eventually recovered,Shimakage continued his development in order to help others with the disorder.
Currently, the Oton Glass is seeking funding. Backers can get a pair of the glasses for 5,000 yen(roughly 47).
Smart glasses aren’t a new concept, but it’s difficult to point to any single pair of smart glasses that people have reviewed favorably. It could, perhaps,be that previous products tried to do too much,or were too expensive. That’s why Intel’s Vaunt smart glasses stripped out some features, like its camera,LCD screen, and speakers. The Oton Glass is for a very specific audience, and its relatively low price could make it more appealing to those who want an affordable way to understand the text around them.
1.What was Keisuke抯 original purpose in designing the Oton Glass?
A. To treat his father抯 disease.
B. To translate text into sound.
C. To assist his father to read.
D. To make written text easier to read.
2.The underlined part 搒tripped out in the last paragraph can be replaced by .
A. improved B. removed C. increased D. invented
3.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The advantages of the Oton Glass.
B. The characteristics of smart glasses.
C. Consumers evaluation of the Oton Glass.
D. The target audiences of various smart glasses.
C
I think adults are affected by media, songs, and the Internet, and that is hard enough. After looking in all of the magazines and at models, my friends and I agree that our least favorite day of the year is when we wear swimsuits! It affects your whole mood and self-image for the day. Think about how hard it is for young girls if they believe “how hot you look” is how valuable you are.
Here are some ways parents can be proactive in encouraging a healthy self-image in their children.
First, teach what real value is. I think kids sometimes are confused about values. How valuable you are is not measured by how pretty you are on the outside and success is not measured by how famous you are. We were watching the Oscars and my 6-year-old son said “She is so pretty,” and then quickly looked at me and said “You are prettier, Mom.” And I said, “It’s okay. There are many people prettier than me on the outside. I know that’s not why you love me.”It is important to teach children this from an early age.
Second, tell your kids about “the grass is always greener syndrome.” It is very easy for all of us to see the glamour (魅力), whether it be in a famous singer or the most popular girl in the school. Do not dehumanize and judge famous people. Talk about what problems they might have that are different from the problems your child has and maybe some of the same struggles, like maybe wanting acceptance from peers (同龄人).
At last, use your mouth. Don’t be afraid to have conversations with your child about how they抮e feeling about ads, songs, etc...Boys too! You are the parent! Kids of all ages want and need boundaries whether they admit it or not. Take a stand and have confidence enough not to be followers and not to purchase clothing, music, or magazines that you don抰 believe sends the right message to your children!
1.What does the underlined word It in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Singing with friends. B. Learning swimming skills.
C. Showing imperfect figures. D. Reading fashion magazines.
2.The author抯 son said 揧ou are prettier, Mom probably________.
A. to praise his mother B. to comfort his mother
C. because he didn抰 like stars D. because he really thought so
3.What syndrome is mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A. Lots of people like judging others. B. Kids want to be popular in school.
C. People tend to like famous singers. D. People always think others life is better.
4.In the last paragraph, the author advises parents to________.
A. set limits for their kids B. make friends with their kids
C. teach their kids how to be confident D. encourage their kids to be themselves

根据Las Fallas,Spain部分的“The focus of this festival is to create and destroy dolls. These dolls are lifelike and usually make fun of dishonest politicians and famous people in Spain.”
根据Mardi Gras,U.S.A.部分的“reflecting the practice of eating richer and fatty foods. Other practices include wearing masks and parades, etc.”
根据文章最后一句中的 “the festival lasts only a few hours due to the limited lifetime of vegetables as folk art”可知,由于作为艺术品的蔬菜保存时间有限,这个节日只持续几个小时。
根据第三段第一句“...started working on the glasses in 2012 to aid his father, who had developed dyslexia,a condition that makes it difficult for someone to read and spell.”
根据最后一段中的“...that previous products tried to do too much,or were too expensive. That’s why...”及“and its relatively low price could make it more appealing to those who want an affordable way to understand the text around them”可知,之前的智能眼镜产品功能过多、价格高昂,而Oton眼镜价格相对较低。
(C)
