【原文】
What
qualities
should
a
teacher
have?
I
think
the
following
would
be
accepted
by
most
of
us.
Firstly,
a
teacher
should
be
attractive.
It
doesn't
mean
a
teacher
should
be
good-looking.
He
should
be
able
to
attract
the
students'
attention.
Anyway,
he
shouldn't
be
boring.
Secondly,
a
teacher
must
understand
the
minds
and
feelings
of
other
people.
Thirdly,
a
teacher
should
be
a
bit
of
an
actor,
which
means
that
a
teacher
should
have
the
ability
to
make
his
lessons
interesting.
Fourthly,
a
teacher
must
be
very
patient.
Teaching
requires
great
efforts
and
a
teacher
should
be
able
to
deal
with
different
kinds
of
children.
Finally,
a
teacher
should
know
that
learning
is
a
lifelong
process.
Teaching
is
a
job
that
a
teacher
will
never
be
perfect
in.
There
is
always
something
to
learn.
There
are
three
main
aspects
of
study:
the
subjects,
the
methods
and
the
students.
Education
needs
full
and
active
cooperation
between
the
teacher
and
the
student.

Thanksgiving
with
a

30

Regnante

her

were
part

save
hundreds

on
the

They

her
husband,
Tingley,
were
part
of
a
volunteer
effort
to
save
hundreds
of
sea
turtles
that
were
washed
up
close
to
death…”可知这一对夫妇正是作为志愿者去救助被冲上岸濒临死亡的海龟们。故可知海龟的状况很差。故选D项。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段第三句“They
were
bound
for
New
Orleans
but
storms
forced
them
to
change
course
and
refuel
twice.”可知他们是开往新奥尔良的,但是遭遇风暴,只能更改航向并重新加了两次油。故坏天气是更改航向的原因。故选B。
26.细节理解题。根据最后一段Leslie说的话“Turtles
Fly
Too
does
whatever
it
takes
to
make
the
mission
happen”Turtles
Fly
Too会做所以能做的事情使得他们的使命达成。而前文第三段对这一机构的介绍“a
charity
that
provides
air
transport
for
the
stricken
turtles”告诉读者这是一个给生病的海龟提供空运的慈善机构。故他们的使命就是不遗余力的救助海龟。故选D。
27.主旨大意题。根据第二段一二句“The
couple
urgently
needed
to
find
temperature-controlled
accommodation
for
the
endangered
sea
turtles.
They
were
in
the
rescuer
race
to
save
the
smallest
sea
turtles
in
the
world”可知这对夫妻急需为濒临死亡的海龟找到一个温度适宜的居住场所。他们正在为救助世界上最小的海龟进行一场救援赛跑。而倒数第二段第二句“Luckily,
A
happy
ending
was
delivered.”描述到这场救援赛跑有了一个好的结局。故这篇文章就是在讲述这个救援海龟的故事。故选A。

Teens
who

enjoy
better
health
as
adults,
according
to
research
published
by
an
American
research
center.
“This

that

could
have
positive
and
long-lasting
effects
beyond
just
academic
success,"
said
Jinho
Kim,
a
professor
at
Korea
University
and
author
of
the
study.
"It
could
also
bring
about
health
implications
in
the
long
run.”
Previous
research
has
suggested
that
teens'
social
relationships
might
be
linked
to
health
outcomes
in
adulthood.
However,
it
is
not
clear
whether
the
link
between
teen
relationships
and
lifetime
health
is
causal
(因果的)-it
could
be
that
other
factors,
such
as
different
family
backgrounds,
might
contribute
to
both
relationship
problems
in
adolescence
and
to
poor
health
in
adulthood.
Also,
most
research
has
focused
on
teens'
relationships
with
their
peers
(同龄人),
rather
than
on
their
relationships
with
teachers.
To
explore
those
questions
further,
Kim
analyzed
data
on
nearly
20,000
participants
from
the
Add
Health
study,
a
national
study
in
the
U.S.
that
followed
participants
from
seventh
grade
into
early
adulthood.
The
participant
pool
included
more
than
3,400
pairs
of
siblings(兄弟姐妹).
As
teens,
participants
answered
questions,
like
“How
often
have
you
had
trouble
getting
along
with
other
students
and
your
teachers?"
As
adults,
participants
were
asked
about
their
physical
and
mental
health.
Kim
found
that
participants
who
had
reported
better
relationships
with
both
their
peers
and
teachers
in
middle
and
high
school
also
reported
better
physical
and
mental
health
in
their
mid-20s.
However,
when
he
controlled
for
family
background
by
looking
at
pairs
of
siblings
together,
only
the
link
between
good
teacher
relationships
and
adult
health
remained
significant.
The
results
suggest
teacher
relationships
are
more
important
than
previously
realized
and
that
schools
should
invest
in
training
teachers
on
how
to
build
warm
and
supportive
relationships
with
their
students.
"This
is
not
something
that
most
teachers
receive
much
training
in,"
Kim
said,
“but
it
should
be.”

Kim说:“这项研究表明,改善学生与老师的关系除了学业上的成功之外,还能产生积极而持久的影响。”“从长远来看,它还会对健康产生影响)得知,此处说的是提升与老师关系融洽对学生健康有益,由此可知画线词词义为“益处”,故选C。
29.主旨大意题。根据第三段“However,
it
is
not
clear
whether
the

Her

won
a

?10,000($12,120).
"I

explained.
"I

In
April,
she
decided
to
open
her
shop
"Camomiles

Pansies"
to
sell
those

When
a

writes
asking

people
have

Most
of
the

under
40,
and
about
10%
are

The
president
of
the
Women's

said
she
was
"very

by
Krystyna's
project.
"There

cases
annually
in
Poland,
of
which
56,

Krystyna
credits
her
interest
in
human
rights
to
her
role
in
the

leads
a
Warsaw

group
and
created
its

After
she
won
the

she
claimed
to
put
the
money
to
good
use
and
was
pleased
that
a
spotlight
was

shone
on
the

abuse.
32.What
might
have
inspired
Krystyna
with
the
idea?
A.The
decreasing
domestic
violence
cases.
B.The
French
initiative
to
sell
special
masks.
C.The
urge
to

the
European
Union

33.How
can
a
victim
get
help
from
Krystyna's
project?
A.By
appearing
to
be
shopping
online.
B.By
requesting
psychological
support.
C.By
purchasing
a
specially-made
cream.
D.By
logging
on
a

C.It
classifies
domestic

D.Young
female

35.Which
of
the
following
words
best
describe
Krystyna?
A.Caring
and
easy-going.
B.Supportive
and
tolerant.
C.Courageous
and
humorous.
D.Sympathetic
and
intelligent.
【答案】32.B
33.A
34.D
35.D
这是一篇新闻报道。文章讲述了新冠疫情封锁期间,一位波兰高中生创建虚假在线购物网站以帮助家庭暴力受害者。
32.推理判断题。根据文章第二段前三句“I
heard
about
a
French
initiative(计划),...I
thought
it
was
so
brilliant!
In
April,
she
decided
to
open
her
shop…(我听说了一个法国的计划……我觉得它太赞了!四月,她决定自己开店……)”可知,灵感来自于法国的这项计划,故选B。
33.细节理解题。根据文章第二段最后两句“When
a
victim
writes
asking
to
buy
a
cream,
a
psychologist
responds...If
someone
places
an
order
and
leaves
an
address,
it
is
actually
a
code
asking
for
authorities
to
visit
their
home.(当受害者写信要求买面霜时,由心理学家而不是售货员作出回应,并询问“皮肤问题”已经持续多久了。如果有人下了订单并留下了地址,这实际上是要求当局访问他家的代码。)可知,受害者可以假装购物,下单并留下地址,实际是来向网站发布求救信息,故选A。
34.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Since
its
launch,more
than
350
people
have
contacted
the
website.
Most
of
the
victims
are
young,
under
40,
and
about
10%
are
male.(自网站上线以来,已有超过350人联系了该网站。大多数受害者都是40岁以下的年轻人,大约10%是男性。)”可知,网站获得帮助的大多是年轻女性,故选D。
35.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段最后一句“was
pleased
that
a
spotlight
was
being
shone
on
the
problem
of
home
abuse.(对家庭暴力问题受到关注感到高兴。)”可推断出Krystyna努力帮助家庭暴力受害者,是富有同情心的“sympathetic”;同时根据最后一段第一句“she
leads
a
Warsaw
scout
group
and
created
its
Facebook
page.(她领导着一个华沙童子军组织,并创建了该组织的Facebook页面。)”可知,她能想带领侦查组并创立网站,说明她很聪明“intelligent”。故选D。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
How
to
Succeed
in
Science
To
succeed
in
science,
you
need
a
lot
more
than
luck.
In
my
view,
you
have
to
combine
intelligence
with
a
willingness
not
to
follow
conventions
when
they
block
your
path
forward.
Thus,
these
have
come
to
be
my
rules
for
success.
36.That
might
sound
proud,
but
the
fact
is
that
you
must
always
turn
to
people
who
are
brighter
than
yourself.
It's
like
playing
any
game.
Even
as
a
child,
I
never
wanted
to
play
games
with
anyone
who
was
as
bad
as
I
was.
If
you
win,
it
gives
you
no
pleasure.
And
in
the
game
of
science
or
life,
the
highest
goal
isn't
simply
to
win;
it's
to
win
at
something
really
difficult.
37.
Take
risks.
To
make
a
huge
success,
a
scientist
has
to
be
prepared
to
get
into
deep
trouble.
If
you
are
going
to
make
a
huge
jump
in
science,
you
will
very
likely
be
unqualified
to
succeed
by
definition.
38.
This
can
be
more
than
personally
upsetting.
Never
do
anything
that
bores
you.
My
experience
in
science
is
that
someone
is
always
telling
you
to
do
things,
and
then
leave
you
alone.
39.
It's
very
hard
to
succeed
if
you
don't
want
to
be
with
other
scientists—you
have
to
go
to
key
meetings
where
you
spot
key
facts
that
would
have
escaped
you.
And
you
have
to
chat
with
your
competitors,
even
if
you
find
them
objectionable.
So
my
final
rule
is:
40.
A.Avoid
foolish
people.
B.Meet
challenges
with
great
courage.
C.I'm
not
good
enough
to
do
well
in
something
I
dislike.
D.If
you
can't
stand
to
be
with
your
peers,
get
out
of
science.
E.
Be
sure
you
always
have
someone
to
save
you
from
a
deep
mess.
F.
Besides,
you
even
have
to
be
prepared
to
disbelieve
your
scientific
heroes.
G.
To
put
it
another
way,
it's
to
go
somewhere
beyond
your
ability
and
come
out
on
top.
【答案】36.A
37.G
38.F
39.C
40.D
本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是在科学研究方面如何取得成功的三个建议。
36.根据下文“That
might
sound
proud,
but
the
fact
is
that
you
must
always
turn
to
people
who
are
brighter
than
yourself.(这听起来可能很自豪,但事实是你必须总是求助于比你自己更聪明的人)”可知,我们要向比我们更聪明的人求助,故A选项“避免愚蠢的人”符合题意。故选A。
37.根据上文“If
you
win,
it
gives
you
no
pleasure.
And
in
the
game
of
science
or
life,
the
highest
goal
isn't
simply
to
win;
it's
to
win
at
something
really
difficult.(如果你赢了,就不会给你带来快乐。在科学或生命的游戏中,最高的目标不仅仅是取胜;在真正困难的事情上获胜是很困难的)”可知,在科学中最高的目标不是获胜,而是战胜困难。所以G选项“换句话说,就是去超出你能力范围的某个地方,然后拔得头筹”是这句话的另一个说法。故选G。
38.根据上文“If
you
are
going
to
make
a
huge
jump
in
science,
you
will
very
likely
be
unqualified
to
succeed
by
definition.(如果你想在科学上取得巨大的进步,你很可能没有资格取得所谓的成功)”可知,如果你想在科学方面取得飞跃,你可能要不走寻常路,要有质疑精神,不要迷信以前的成功者。所以F选项“你要准备好不相信心目中的英雄人物”符合题意。故选F。
39.根据上文“My
experience
in
science
is
that
someone
is
always
telling
you
to
do
things,
and
then
leave
you
alone.
(我在科学方面的经验是,有人总是告诉你去做事情,然后让你一个人呆着)”可知,作者不喜欢做这样的事。C选项“我不喜欢做自己不喜欢的事情”符合题意。故选C。
40.根据上文“you
have
to
go
to
key
meetings
where
you
spot
key
facts
that
would
have
escaped
you.
And
you
have
to
chat
with
your
competitors,
even
if
you
find
them
objectionable.(你必须参加重要的会议,在会上找出你本可以逃避的关键事实。你必须和你的竞争对手聊天,即使你觉得他们很讨厌)”可知,此处表示如果你不想和其他科学家在一起,你就很难成功。D选项“如果你不能忍受和你的同龄人在一起,那就远离科学。”符合题意。故选D。

【答案】
这是一篇说明文。文章介绍什么是古典文学,它们是伟大作品和智慧的典范,但有些人不读古典文学并认为它们似乎与今天的生活没有密切的关系。作者认为它们在世界上仍有一席之地,许多以它们为原型的电影大获成功。
56.were
written
考查时态和语态。句意:它们是很久以前写的小说、戏剧和诗歌,写得非常好,以至于人们现在仍然读它们。分析句子可知,空处在定语从句中充当谓语,先行词that指代前面的novels,
plays
and
poems,因此谓语动词应该用复数形式,并且与主语是被动关系,可知此处要用被动语态,描述过去的事情,时态是一般过去时。故填were
written。
57.that
考查状语从句的引导词。句意:它们是很久以前写的小说、戏剧和诗歌,写得非常好,以至于人们现在仍然读它们。固定句式so...that...“如此…以至于…”,that引导结果状语从句。故填that。
58.those
考查代词。句意:由于很多经典作品都是很久以前的作品,它们的语言特征与现代作品有很大的不同。分析可知,此处为同类异物的指代,根据language
characteristics,此处应用those。故填those。
59.to
read
考查非谓语动词。句意:这使得一些人很难读懂它们,所以它们经常被放在书架上积满灰尘。此处为固定句型:主语+
be+adj.+
to
do
sth.“某事做起来是怎么样的”。故填to
read。
60.closely
考查副词。句意:许多人不读这些书,因为他们认为经典名著既古老又无聊,似乎与今天的生活没有密切的关系。此处要用副词修饰not
related
to。故填closely。
61.a
考查冠词。句意:它们并没有消失,在世界上仍有一席之地。根据句意可知,此处为固定短语have
a
place,意思是“有一席之地”。故填a。
62.based
考查非谓语动词。句意:不然为什么许多以他们为原型的电影会大获成功呢?be
based
on“以......为基础”,分析句子可知,此处要用过去分词based作定语,修饰名词films。故填based。
63.came
考查时态。句意:1995年,一部由简·奥斯汀的小说《爱玛》改编的获奖电影上映。分析句子可知,此句主语是an
award-winning
film,此处是谓语动词,根据In
1995可知时态是一般过去时,此处要用动词的过去式。故填came。
64.adaptation
考查名词。句意:三年后的1998年,一部改编自查尔斯·狄更斯小说《远大前程》的现代电影在电影院上映。根据a
modern可知此处要用单数名词。故填adaptation。
65.with
考查介词。句意:如果这些经典小说与当代生活毫无关系,谁也不会费心把它们拍成电影。固定短语
have
nothing
to
do
with,意为“与……无关”。故填with。

The
two
rescuers
knew
they
were
in
trouble
when
they
found
that
they
had
to
stay
at
the
airport
on
the
night
before
Thanksgiving
with
a
grounded
plane
and
30
turtles(海龟).
Regnante
and
her
husband,
Tingley,
were
part
of
a
volunteer
effort
to
save
hundreds
of
sea
turtles
that
were
washed
up
close
to
death
on
the
beaches
of
Massachusetts.
The
couple
urgently
needed
to
find
temperature-controlled
accommodation
for
the
endangered
sea
turtles.
They
were
in
the
rescuer
race
to
save
the
smallest
sea
turtles
in
the
world,
at
a
little
over
2
feet
long,
and
they
had
been

with
very
low
temperatures.
Every
year,
hundreds
of
the
turtles
follow
warm
ocean
currents
north
from
their
hatching
sites
in
the
Gulf
of
Mexico,
become
trapped
in
the
cold
Atlantic
and
are
then
rescued
from
Cape

by
volunteers,
who
take
them

Regnante
is
a
volunteer
with
Turtles

turtles.
On
Wednesday,
she
took
off
with
the
turtles
from
near
Boston
in
a
plane
piloted
by
her
husband.
They
were
bound
for
New
Orleans
but
storms
forced
them
to
change
course
and
refuel
twice.
Then,
at
Chattanooga,
Tennessee,
a
stone
damaged
the
propeller.
"It
was
just
one
thing
after
another,"
Regnante
told
The
New

"I
just
kind
of
wanted
to
say,
"Guys,
it's
going

OK'."
For
turtles,
being
out
of
the
water
and
in
transit
for
a
long
period
was
stressful.
Luckily,
A
happy
ending
was
delivered.
Two
heated
trucks
were
sent
nearby,
where
the
turtles
spent
the
night.
On
Thanksgiving
morning,
Regnante
and
Tingley
drove
them
to
a

Teens
who
have
good,
supportive
relationships
with
their
teachers
enjoy
better
health
as
adults,
according
to
research
published
by
an
American
research
center.
“This
research
suggests
that
improving
students'
relationships
with
teachers
could
have
positive
and
long-lasting
effects
beyond
just
academic
success,"
said
Jinho
Kim,
a
professor
at
Korea
University
and
author
of
the
study.
"It
could
also
bring
about
health
implications
in
the
long
run.”
Previous
research
has
suggested
that
teens'
social
relationships
might
be
linked
to
health
outcomes
in
adulthood.
However,
it
is
not
clear
whether
the
link
between
teen
relationships
and
lifetime
health
is
causal
(因果的)-it
could
be
that
other
factors,
such
as
different
family
backgrounds,
might
contribute
to
both
relationship
problems
in
adolescence
and
to
poor
health
in
adulthood.
Also,
most
research
has
focused
on
teens'
relationships
with
their
peers
(同龄人),
rather
than
on
their
relationships
with
teachers.
To
explore
those
questions
further,
Kim
analyzed
data
on
nearly
20,000
participants
from
the
Add
Health
study,
a
national
study
in
the
U.S.
that
followed
participants
from
seventh
grade
into
early
adulthood.
The
participant
pool
included
more
than
3,400
pairs
of
siblings(兄弟姐妹).
As
teens,
participants
answered
questions,
like
“How
often
have
you
had
trouble
getting
along
with
other
students
and
your
teachers?"
As
adults,
participants
were
asked
about
their
physical
and
mental
health.
Kim
found
that
participants
who
had
reported
better
relationships
with
both
their
peers
and
teachers
in
middle
and
high
school
also
reported
better
physical
and
mental
health
in
their
mid-20s.
However,
when
he
controlled
for
family
background
by
looking
at
pairs
of
siblings
together,
only
the
link
between
good
teacher
relationships
and
adult
health
remained
significant.
The
results
suggest
teacher
relationships
are
more
important
than
previously
realized
and
that
schools
should
invest
in
training
teachers
on
how
to
build
warm
and
supportive
relationships
with
their
students.
"This
is
not
something
that
most
teachers
receive
much
training
in,"
Kim
said,
“but
it
should
be.”

show?
A.Good
adult
health
depends
on
teens'
good
teachers.

long-term
adult
health.

Disturbed
by
reports
of
rising
domestic
violence
under
coronavirus
lockdown,
a
Polish
high
school
student
launched
a
fake
online
shop
to
offer
a
lifeline
to
victims
trapped
in
their
homes.
Her
idea
won
a
European
Union
prize
that
came
with
?10,000($12,120).
"I
heard
about
a
French
initiative(计划),
where
people
go
to
the
pharmacy
(药房)
and
ask
for
a
special
mask
that
lets
the
pharmacist
know
they
are
a
victim
of
domestic
violence,"
Krystyna
Paszko
explained.
"I
thought
it
was
so
brilliant!"
In
April,
she
decided
to
open
her
shop
"Camomiles
and
Pansies"
to
sell
those
cosmetics.
When
a
victim
writes
asking
to
buy
a
cream,
a
psychologist
responds
instead
of
a
salesperson
and
asks
how
long
the
"skin
problems"
have
been
going
on
for.
If
someone
places
an
order
and
leaves
an
address,
it
is
actually
a
code
asking
for
authorities
to
visit
their
home.
After
Krystyna
openly
wrote
about
her
plan
on
her
own
Facebook
page,
she
was
flooded
with
questions.
"I
thought
it
would
only
be
for
my
friends,
but
the
shares
on
Facebook
were
big
and
it
became
a
hit,"
she
said.
With
so
much
interest,
she
contacted
the
Women's
Rights
Centre,
a
Polish
NGO,
asking
for
assistance.
In
response
it
provided
psychologists
and
lawyers
to
work
with
the
website.
Since
its
launch,
more
than
350
people
have
contacted
the
website.
Most
of
the
victims
are
young,
under
40,
and
about
10%
are
male.
The
president
of
the
Women's
Rights
Centre,
Urszula
Nowakowska,
said
she
was
"very
impressed"
by
Krystyna's
project.
"There
are
around
70,000
domestic
violence
cases
annually
in
Poland,
of
which
56,
000
are
treated
as
family
conflicts
rather
than
crimes."
Krystyna
credits
her
interest
in
human
rights
to
her
role
in
the
scouts(童子军)—she
leads
a
Warsaw
scout
group
and
created
its
Facebook
page.
After
she
won
the
prize,
she
claimed
to
put
the
money
to
good
use
and
was
pleased
that
a
spotlight
was
being
shone
on
the
problem
of
home
abuse.
32.What
might
have
inspired
Krystyna
with
the
idea?
A.The
decreasing
domestic
violence
cases.
B.The
French
initiative
to
sell
special
masks.
C.The
urge
to
win
the
European
Union
prize.
D.The
advice
from
a
professional
psychologist.
33.How
can
a
victim
get
help
from
Krystyna's
project?
A.By
appearing
to
be
shopping
online.
B.By
requesting
psychological
support.
C.By
purchasing
a
specially-made
cream.
D.By
logging
on
a
fake
account
to
place
orders.
34.What
can
we
know
about
the
website
mentioned
in
Paragraph
3?
A.Krystyna
shared
its
success
on
Facebook.
B.A
Polish
NGO
offered
financial
assistance
to
it.
C.It
classifies
domestic
violence
as
family
conflicts.
D.Young
female
victims
have
benefited
most
from
it.
35.Which
of
the
following
words
best
describe
Krystyna?
A.Caring
and
easy-going.
B.Supportive
and
tolerant.
C.Courageous
and
humorous.
D.Sympathetic
and
intelligent.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
How
to
Succeed
in
Science
To
succeed
in
science,
you
need
a
lot
more
than
luck.
In
my
view,
you
have
to
combine
intelligence
with
a
willingness
not
to
follow
conventions
when
they
block
your
path
forward.
Thus,
these
have
come
to
be
my
rules
for
success.
36.That
might
sound
proud,
but
the
fact
is
that
you
must
always
turn
to
people
who
are
brighter
than
yourself.
It's
like
playing
any
game.
Even
as
a
child,
I
never
wanted
to
play
games
with
anyone
who
was
as
bad
as
I
was.
If
you
win,
it
gives
you
no
pleasure.
And
in
the
game
of
science
or
life,
the
highest
goal
isn't
simply
to
win;
it's
to
win
at
something
really
difficult.
37.
Take
risks.
To
make
a
huge
success,
a
scientist
has
to
be
prepared
to
get
into
deep
trouble.
If
you
are
going
to
make
a
huge
jump
in
science,
you
will
very
likely
be
unqualified
to
succeed
by
definition.
38.
This
can
be
more
than
personally
upsetting.
Never
do
anything
that
bores
you.
My
experience
in
science
is
that
someone
is
always
telling
you
to
do
things,
and
then
leave
you
alone.
39.
It's
very
hard
to
succeed
if
you
don't
want
to
be
with
other
scientists—you
have
to
go
to
key
meetings
where
you
spot
key
facts
that
would
have
escaped
you.
And
you
have
to
chat
with
your
competitors,
even
if
you
find
them
objectionable.
So
my
final
rule
is:
40.
A.Avoid
foolish
people.
B.Meet
challenges
with
great
courage.
C.I'm
not
good
enough
to
do
well
in
something
I
dislike.
D.If
you
can't
stand
to
be
with
your
peers,
get
out
of
science.
E.
Be
sure
you
always
have
someone
to
save
you
from
a
deep
mess.
F.
Besides,
you
even
have
to
be
prepared
to
disbelieve
your
scientific
heroes.
G.
To
put
it
another
way,
it's
to
go
somewhere
beyond
your
ability
and
come
out
on
top.

In
1974,
after
filling
out
fifty
applications,
going
through
four
interviews,
and
winning
one
offer,
I
took
what
I
could
get—a
teaching
job
at
what
I
considered
a
distant
wild
area:
western
New
Jersey.
My
characteristic
optimism
was
alive
only
when
I
reminded
myself
that
I
would
be
doing
what
I
had
wanted
to
do
since
I
was
fourteen—teaching
English.
School
started
and
I
was
teaching
English.
I
worked
hard,
taking
time
off
only
to
eat
and
sleep.
And
then
there
was
my
sixth-grade
class
who
were
only
six
years
younger
than
me.
I
had
a
problem
long
before
I
knew
it.
I
was
struggling
in
my
work
as
a
young
idealistic
teacher.
I
wanted
to
make
literature
come
alive
and
to
promote
a
love
of
the
written
word.
The
students
wanted
to
throw
spitballs
and
whisper
dirty
words
in
the
back
of
the
classroom.
In
college
I
had
been
taught
that
a
successful
educator
should
ignore
bad
behavior.
So
I
did.
I
was
confident
that
the
bad
behavior
would
disappear
as
I
gave
my
students
positive
attention.
But
in
fact,
humans
particularly
teenagers
rarely
seem
reasonable.
By
the
time
my
boss,
who
was
also
my
taskmaster
known
to
be
the
strictest,
most
demanding,
most
quick
to
fire
inexperienced
teachers,
came
into
the
classroom
to
observe
me,
the
students
exhibited
very
little
good
behavior
to
praise.
My
boss
sat
in
the
back
of
the
classroom.
The
boys
in
the
class
were
making
animal
noises,
hitting
each
other
while
the
girls
filed
their
nails
or
read
magazines.
I
just
pretended
it
all
wasn’t
happening,
and
went
on
lecturing
and
tried
to
ask
some
inspiring
questions.
My
boss,
sitting
in
the
back
of
the
classroom,
seemed
to
be
growing
bigger
and
bigger.
After
twenty
minutes,
he
left
silently.
Visions
of
unemployment
marched
before
my
eyes.
Paragraph
1:
After
class
I
took
a
deep
breath
and
walked
into
his
office.

Paragraph
2:
Fifteen
years
later
I
still
drive
that
winding
road
to
the
same
school.
