一、Lead In
1. CEOs (chief executive officers)
CEOs are among the highest paid workers; however, long hours, considerable travel, and intense pressure to succeed are common. The formal education and experience of CEOs varies as widely as the nature of their responsibilities. Keen competition is expected because the prestige and high pay attract a large number of qualified applicants.
2. Credit Card
A credit card gives you the power to buy goods or services now and pay for them later. It represents an approval by a bank or company to use their money. Credit card issuers are usually banks, even though the card may bear another company name or logo. The name of the issuer appears somewhere on the card. Trade names such as VISA and MasterCard are not actually card issuers. They are termed “membership associations.” Banks use them for their payment processing services, policy setting and marketing assistance.
3. Stanford University
One of the most prestigious universities in the world, Stanford University, a privately funded university, situated on an expansive and picturesque campus in suburban California, offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate education programs as well as hosting a world-renowned medical center and a wide variety of research facilities and community outreach projects. It has a reputation among students as being a relaxed, fun-loving, warm-weather alternative to the Ivy League schools of the east coast.
4. The Chinese “Bill Gates”
Chen Tianqiao, known as “the Chinese Bill Gates,” is the head of China’s leading on-line game operator “Shanda Networking.” This 30-year-old billionaire Chen, together with four friends, started his own Internet company at the age of 26. Three years later, his company has 68 percent of the domestic Internet game market. Chen has become a legendary figure in the minds of millions of Chinese young people.
5. Fortune Magazine
Just as Wall Street is an icon to the investment community, Fortune magazine is one to its readership. Columns include features on the marketplace, tech movers and shakers, career trends, U.S. politics, and even European business. Readers also look forward to the annually updated Fortune lists, which include the “40 Richest Under 40,” “Most Powerful Women,” and the “Fortune 500,” an exclusive collection of companies whose employees are undoubtedly Fortune readers as well.
6. Topic-related Words and Phrases
Current capital: the part of a company’s capital that is used for day-to-day operations. It is desirable that companies maintain substantially more current assets than current liabilities(债务、负债).
Value-added tax (VAT)(增值税): It is levied on two categories:
(1) Goods — which can be refunded to tourists to encourage tourism. The Goods comprise: apparel, cosmetics, gifts, etc. Value-added tax could reach up to 20% on goods.
(2) Services — which can be refunded to Corporates and Institutions to encourage business. Value-added tax could reach up to 25% on services.
