A
Amelia
Earhart
was
born
on
July
24,1897,
in
Atchison,Kansas.She
was
the
elder
of
Edwin
Stanton
and
Amy
Otis
Earhart's
two
daughters.Childhood
was
not
happy
for
the
two
bright
sisters.Their
father
was
an
alcoholic(酒鬼)and
lost
jobs
often.The
family
traveled
a
great
deal.
The
girls
often
recited
poetry
while
doing
their
chores
but
also
loved
sports,
including
basketball
and
tennis.Their
parents
encouraged
them
to
try
new
things.
During
the
war
Amelia
worked
as
a
military
nurse
in
Canada
and
later
she
became
a
social
worker
and
taught
English
to
immigrant
children.Besides
work,Amelia
had
one
hobby.She
enjoyed
watching
airplane
stunt(特技)shows,
which
were
popular
in
the
1920s.Then
one
day
she
took
a
10?minute
plane
ride
and
knew
what
her
vocation
would
be.
After
10
hours
of
instruction
and
several
crashes,Amelia
was
ready
to
fly.She
made
her
first
solo
flight
in
1921.The
flight
went
well.Till
1928
,flying
was
only
her
hobby.This
changed
when
Amelia
received
a
call
from
Captain
Hilton
H
Railey.He
asked
her
to
join
pilots
Wilmer
Stultz
and
Louis
Gordon
on
a
flight
from
the
United
States
to
England.
Though
Amelia
was
just
a
passenger,
she
became
the
first
woman
to
cross
the
Atlantic.After
this,
Amelia
got
great
publicity.In
May
1932,
she
crossed
the
Atlantic
alone
and
set
a
new
transatlantic
crossing
record
of
13
hours
and
30
minutes.She
received
a
medal
from
American
President
Herbert
Hoover
for
this.Several
years
later,
she
became
the
first
woman
to
fly
from
California
to
Hawaii,which
was
a
difficult
route.
Amelia's
last
flight
began
in
June
1937.She
and
navigator
Fred
Noonan
set
out
to
fly
around
the
world.They
were
in
a
twin?engine
plane.The
two
of
them
took
off
from
Miami
in
America
to
South
America,Then
they
crossed
the
South
Atlantic
Ocean
to
Dakar
in
Africa.From
there
to
Thailand
to
Australia.
However,
after
they
left
Lae
in
New
Guinea
for
Howland
Island,the
American
coast
guard
lost
contact
with
the
plane.Despite
an
extensive
search,
the
American
Navy
never
found
a
trace
of
either
the
plane
or
the
aviators.Their
disappearance
is
still
a
mystery.

B
It
was
an
amazing
feeling
to
be
acknowledged
for
the
Pride
of
Britain
Award
at
No.10
Downing
Street.
The
last
thing
you
expect
when
doing
something
as
ordinary
as
picking
your
son
up
from
a
sleepover
is
to
end
up
saving
three
people's
lives
in
a
plane
crash—but
that's
exactly
what
happened
to
me
in
May
this
year.
I
think
I
was
acting
unconsciously.I
jumped
out,leaving
Giacomo
in
the
car.
The
plane
was
upside
down
and
flames
were
coming
out
of
the
driver's
seat
and
I
could
hear
screaming.I
think
there
must
have
been
roughly
half
a
minute
between
getting
the
first
and
last
person
out.Then
another
guy—who
turned
out
to
be
Joel
Snarr—arrived
on
the
scene
to
help
at
just
the
right
time.I
don't
think
I'd
have
been
able
to
get
the
pilot
out—he
was
a
big
guy.There
is
no
way
he
would
have
survived
if
Joel
hadn't
been
there.I
could
tell
straight
away
Joel
had
a
military
background
by
how
he
conducted
himself.We'd
just
got
all
three
of
them
to
a
safe
distance
when
the
aircraft
was
completely
swallowed
by
the
flames.
Giacomo
and
I
stared
at
each
other,almost
laughing
in
relief.
The
emergency
services
arrived
pretty
quickly,and
we
were
at
the
scene
for
a
couple
of
hours
while
they
dealt
with
the
fire
was
the
first
time
the
emotion
of
the
whole
thing
hit
me.I
kept
randomly
bursting
into
tears.
Thankfully,Stuart
Moore,the
pilot,and
his
nephew
and
niece
Jack
Moore,19,and
Billie
Manley,16,have
all
since
made
a
full
recovery.Jack
and
Billie
were
suffering
a
lot
more
than
I
was.Although
they
were
safe,the
memory
of
being
inside
that
burning
plane
would
have
been
more
of
an
emotional
scar.

the
family.

fear

despair
then.

equipped

first?aid

the
fourth
paragraph
mainly
about?
A.Joel
Snarr's
character.
B.The
importance
of
teamwork.

investigation
of

both
appreciated
Joel's
help.
C.They
both
survived
the
crashing
plane.
D.The
emergency
services

A [推理判断题。根据题干中的“almost
laugh
in
relief”定位到文章第五段,结合第四段内容可推知,作者刚刚经历了惊心动魄的营救过程,终于在飞机被火焰完全吞噬前救出了全部的人,所以此刻才会和Giacomo一起几乎如释重负地笑,“a
narrow
escape”意为“死里逃生”,故A项正确。]
8.What
is
the
best
title
for
the
text?
A.An
Unforgettable
Award
B.A
Crashing
Plane
C.A
Thrilling

Exciting
Experience
C [标题归纳题。文章第一、二段引出主题——作者在飞机失事后救了三个人,其后的段落围绕具体的营救过程和事故的其他方面展开,故C项最适合作本文的标题。]
Ⅱ.读后续写
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给的段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Why
We
Should
Be
Thankful
Not
everyone
gets
to
have
the
same
things
that
we
have.In
fact,people
all
around
the
world
don't
have
the
means
to
celebrate
any
holidays,with
much
less
food
to
feast
on.Everyone
should
be
happy
for
everything
they
get.Most
people
are
thankful...but
notice
why
I
say
most.
The
one
person
who
wants
more
and
more
is
little
Ricky.He's
never
understood
what
it
is
to
share.Let's
pay
him
a
visit,
shall
we,
as
we
make
our
way
to
little
old
Canada—all
the
way
down
to
Maple
Street
and
to
the
nice
house
that
little
Ricky
lives
in.As
we
move
closer,you
can
hear
the
yells
and
screams
of
little
Ricky
not
getting
what
he
wants.
“But
Mommy,
I
want
the
new
robot
toy!
I
want
it,I
want
it!”Ricky
yelled.A
television
commercial
was
on,
showing
the“MR
DESTRUCTOR
$
500”with
its
all
new
talking
features.He
wanted
it,
he
had
to
have
it,
and
he
would.
“Ricky,
no,”
said
his
mom.“You
already
have
enough
toys.If
you
can
donate
some
of
your
toys
to
the
less
fortunate
kids,
then
you
can
get
a
new
toy,
okay?”Ricky's
mom
was
always
worried
about
her
son's
greed.
Little
Ricky
was
confused—he
didn't
understand
what
his
mommy
was
saying.
“Mommy,
what
is
donation?”Ricky
had
never
heard
about
that.
“Well,it's
when
we
gather
up
all
of
the
toys
that
you
don't
want
anymore,
and
we
go
to
a
homeless
shelter
or
an
orphanage
and
give
the
little
boys
and
girls
the
toys.We
share
with
them
because
they
don't
have
enough
money.”Ricky's
mom
sure
did
hope
that
her
son
understood
what
she
was
telling
him.
But
little
Ricky
was
still
confused.Why
didn't
the
little
boys
and
girls
have
all
the
stuff
he
had?
Ricky
smiled
at
his
mom
and
went
running
to
his
toy
room.He
began
to
sort
through
all
of
his
old
toys
until
he
had
a
big
stack.

“Mommy,mommy!Come
on,
let's
go
to
give
all
the
kids
my
toys!”Ricky
was
excited.They
arrived
at
a
homeless
shelter.As
Ricky
stepped
inside,
he
was
heartbroken.What
he
saw
were
crowds
of
little
boys
and
girls
getting
food,but
only
little
of
it.Ricky
thought
of
the
food
that
he
threw
away
during
dinner.Ricky
helped
mommy
give
out
his
toys
to
these
less
fortunate
kids,
who
said,“Thank
you.”when
receiving
toys.
On
the
way
home,
Ricky
started
to
cry.“Ricky,what's
wrong?”His
mom
asked,“Why
are
you
crying?”“Mommy,
I
felt
bad
because
these
kids
don't
have
everything
I
have.I
can
get
what
I
want,but
they
are
poor
and
have
no
money.”Mommy
was
happy
that
Ricky
understood
what
it
felt
like
to
give
something
to
others
and
the
meaning
of
donation,especially
that
it
is
not
good
to
want
everything
and
then
just
throw
them
away.Ricky
learned
that
we
should
be
thankful
for
what
we
have
already
had.
