How
far
would
you
go
to
make
a
good
impression
in
a
new
job?
A
college
student
in
Alabama
walked
32
kilometers
in
the
dark
to
get
to
where
he
would
work
on
time.
Walter
Carr's
car
broke
down
the
night
before
he
started
his
new
job
in
Bellhops,
a
furniture
moving
company.
Unable
to
find
a
ride,
Carr
figured
out
how
long
it
would
take
to
walk
from
his
house
to
the
customer's
house
in
Pelham.
And
then
he
left
at
midnight
so
that
he
could
reach
there
by
8
am
the
next
morning.
Pelham
police
saw
him
walking
along
a
highway
at
4
am,
so
they
stopped
to
see
if
he
needed
help.
After
hearing
his
story,
they
took
him
to
a
restaurant
for
breakfast
and
then
to
a
church
where
he
could
safely
wait
until
8
am.
The
police
then
took
Can
to
the
home
of
the
customer
Jenny
Lamey.
Lamey
suggested
that
Can
rest
for
a
while
because
he
had
just
walked
for
a
long
time,
but
Can
insisted
on
starting
working
at
once.
While
working,
Carr
told
Lamey
that
he
and
his
mother
moved
from
New
Orleans,
Louisiana
to
Birmingham,
Alabama
after
losing
their
home
in
Hurricane
Katrina,
a
devastating
hurricane
that
hit
the
US
in
2005.
He
worked
part-time
to
cover
living
costs
and
pay
college
fees.
Greatly
touched
by
Can,
Lamey
started
a
GoFundMe
page
to
help
Carr
raise
money
to
get
his
car
fixed.
Walter
Carr's
story
touched
many
others
around
the
US.
Within
a
few
days,
people
gave
over
$
73,
000
to
his
GoFundMe
page.
Besides,
Carr
received
more
job
offers
and
won
a
scholarship.
Grateful
for
others'
help,
Carr
has
decided
to
give
a
part
of
the
donations
to
the
Birmingham
Education
Foundation,
and
he
is
determined
to
give
back
more.
24.

did
Carr
have
to
walk
to
Pelham
to
work?

He
couldn't

ride
after
a
hurricane
destroyed
his
car.
B.
The
police
took
away
his
car
after
he
was
caught
speeding.
C.
He
had
no
choice
after
he
had
a
car
crash
in
the
dark.

He
failed
to
find
a
ride
after
his
car
broke
down.
25.

did
Can
do
first
after
he

27.

his
car?
A.
Jenny
Lamey.

contributors.
C.

his
company.
D.
The
Birmingham
Education
Foundation.
C
Nobody
likes
to
fail.
It
makes
people
feel
embarrassed
and
discouraged.
What's
worse,
it
may
cause
major
professional
or
personal
trouble
and
lead
to
negativity.
Basically,
failure
is
no
fun
for
most
people.
However,
a
vast
body
of
research
tells
us
that
failure
provides
us
with
a
chance
to
grow
and
develop,
increases
adaptability,
and
helps
protect
against
anxiety.
It's
hard
to
change
the
mindset(心态)of
a
lifetime.
But
even
if
we
still
can't
get
over
the
broken
marriage
or
the
failed
College
Entrance
Examination
or
the
work
presentation
that
went
fearfully
wrong,
it
might
not
be
too
late
for
our
kids.
Christy
Pennison,
a
professional
consultant,
says
she
works
with
an
increasing
number
of
kids
and
teens
who
show
significant
anxiety
around
a
fear
of
failure.
She
said,
"We
want
to
protect
our
children,
and
we
want
them
to
live
happy
and
meaningful
lives,
so
we
frequently
tell
them
the
harm
of
failure
and
ask
them
to
avoid
failure.
The
children
experiencing
internal
and
sometimes
external
pressure
think
they
shouldn't
fail.
Meanwhile,
we
always
have
high
expectations
of
them.
So
when
they
don't
live
up
to
a
certain
standard,
or
things
don't
go
according
to
the
plans,
they
will
feel
upset
and
anxious."
Pennison
argues
that
failures,
are
often
the
hidden
learning
chances
that
can
help
people
develop
positive
qualities,
like
persistence,
focus,
flexibility,
patience,
and
positive
self-image.
So
what
can
parents
do
to
help
their
children
embrace
failure
instead
of
avoiding
it
at
all
costs?
Pennison
suggests
directing
praise
towards
the
effort,
not
the
result.
"This
allows
children
to
build
confidence
in
themselves,
"she
explains.
"Acknowledging
the
effort
can
give
children
permission
to
try
new
things
without
a
fear
of
failure.
And
the
bigger
picture
is
that
the
development
of
the
mindset-'I'd
rather
try
and
fail
than
not
try
at
all.'-helps
them
keep
a
belief
in
themselves,
and
expands
their
world
of
possibilities."
As
Pennison
points
out,
we
all
fail,
but
how
we
get
up
after
we
fail
is
what
matters.
28.

focus
on
when
thinking
of

courage
to
face
it.

efforts
made
to
handle
it.
C.
Unexpected
benefits
it
brings.

2?

comments
on
adolescents.
C.
The
consequences
of
overprotecting
children.
D.

children.
31.

of
the

to
face

every
achievement.

a
bright
mindset.

on
the
process
of
kids'
effort.

Masks
that
helped
save
lives
are
proving
a
deadly
danger
for
wildlife,
with
birds
and
sea
creatures
trapped
in
the
shocking
number
of
thrown-away
facial
coverings.
Single-use
masks
have
been
found
around
pavements,
waterways
and
beaches
worldwide.
Worn
once,
the
thin
protective
materials
can
take
hundreds
of
years
to
decompose(分解).
"Face
masks
aren't
going
away
any
time
soon-but
when
we
throw
them
away,
these
items
can
harm
the
environment
and
the
animals,"
Ashley
Fruno
of
animal
rights
group
PETA
said.
In
Britain,
a
gull
was
rescued
by
the
RSPCA
after
its
legs
became
tangled
in
the
straps(带子)of
a
mask
for
up
to
a
week.
The
animal
welfare
charity
took
it
to
a
wildlife
hospital
for
treatment
before
its
release.
The
biggest
impact
may
be
in
the
water.
More
than
1.5
billion
masks
made
their
way
into
the
world's
oceans
last
year,
accounting
for
around
6,
200
extra
tonnes
of
ocean
plastic
pollution,
according
to
environmental
group
Oceans
Asia.
Conservationists
in
Brazil
found
one
mask
inside
the
stomach
of
a
penguin
after
its
body
was
washed
up
on
a
beach,
while
a
dead
pufferfish
was
discovered
caught
inside
another
off
the
coast
of
Miami.
French
campaigners
found
a
dead
crab
trapped
in
a
mask
near
the
Mediterranean.
Masks
and
gloves
are
"particularly
problematic"
for
sea
creatures,
says
George
Leonard,
chief
scientist
from
NGO
Ocean
Conservancy.
"When
those
plastics
break
down
in
the
environment,
they
then
enter
the
food
chain
and
impact
entire
ecosystems."
he
added.
There
has
been
a
shift
towards
greater
use
of
reusable
cloth
masks
as
the
pandemic(疫情)
has
worn
on,
but
many
are
still
using
the
lighter
single-use
varieties.
Campaigners
have
urged
people
to
bin
them
properly
and
cut
the
straps
to
reduce
the
risk
of
animals
becoming
trapped.
Oceans
Asia
has
also
called
on
governments
to
increase
fines
for
littering
and
encourage
the
use
of
washable
masks.

a
decision
or
opinion
of
your
own.
36
But
luckily,
it's
something
you
can
train
yourself
to
do
better.
One
of
the
most
important
parts
of
thinking
critically
is
learning
what
details
matter.
We're
exposed
to
so
much
information
and
so
many
different
opinions
every
day
that
it's
really
easy
to
get
lost
in
the
details.
37
Knowing
which
details
matter
is
the
first
part
of
critical
thinking,
but
it's
pretty
useless
if
you
don't
know
what
types
of
questions
to
ask
next.
38
It's
important
to
always
ask
yourself
why
something
is
important
and
how
it
connects
to
things
you
already
know.
As
you
do
that,
you
train
your
brain
to
think
critically
about
more
information
you
come
across.
As
with
anything,
if
you
want
to
get
good
at
critical
thinking,
you
need
to
practice
it
every
day.
39
This
could
be
casual
observations
or
a
notebook
with
opinions,
but
the
point
is
to
write
every
single
day.
Likewise,
participating
in
a
healthy
debate
with
friends
is
great
practice.
40
The
more
knowledge
you
gain,
the
better
you'll
become
at
thinking
about
it.
That
doesn't
mean
that
you
should
be
constantly
thinking
about
thinking,
but
the
end
result
is
a
brain
that
automatically
forms
better
arguments,
focused
ideas,
and
creative
solutions
to
problems.
A.
Critical
thinking
doesn't
end.
B.
It
doesn't
always
come
naturally
to
us.
C.
Critical
thinking
can't
be
learned
in
school.
D.
You
should
question
all
the
provided
details.
E.
One
easy
way
to
do
this
is
to
keep
a
journal
of
some
kind.
F.
After
all,
thinking
critically
and
asking
questions
go
hand
in
hand.
G.
Subsequently,
we
need
to
train
ourselves
to
learn
which
details
matter.

The
situation
wasn't
good,
and
doctors
estimated
his

no
more
than
two
years.

and
physical
pains,
his

and

and
they've

they
knew
nothing
about,"
he
said.
But
46
all
the
chaos,
there
has
been
one
constant:
his
wife
Diane.
Whether
it
was
accompanying
him
to
every
doctor's
47
or
cooking
his
favorite
meal,
Diane
always
made
sure
her
husband
knew
he
had
her
full
support.
"I

My

48
so
much
suffering.
I'm
so
49
to
have
her

with
me
and
not
against
me."
Geske
said.
The
Geskes
50
that
their

been
far
from
easy-they
call
it
"cruel"
in
fact-and
sometimes
they

to
the
stresses
of
the
illness.
But
Diane
has
52
to
learn
how
to
cope
with
the
more
difficult
times.
"If
he's
in
a
mood
or
having
a
terrible
day,
I
just
leave
him
alone
for

while"
she

77.第二节
读后续写(满分20分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A
boulder(巨石),
as
big
as
a
house.
That's
how
the
guidebook
described
Giant
Rock.
Dad
said
it
arrived
here
millions
of
years
ago.
I
was
finally
going
to
see
it,
in
snowshoes,
with
my
two
older
cousins,
my
dad,
and
my
uncle
Don.
I'd
been
snowshoeing
before,
and
I
liked
the
adventure
of
hiking
through
deep
snow.
At
the
parking
area,
after
putting
on
our
snowshoes,
we
studied
the
map.
Due
to
the
geographical
location,
electrical
devices
are
inaccessible
here.
The
map
is
our
only
guide.
"We
start
here,"
Dad
said,
"on
the
red
trail(小路).
Then
we
turn
left
onto
the
purple
road.
That's
where
Giant
Rock
is."
"Remember
to
stick
together
and
don't
wander
off,
guys."
Uncle
Don
said.
The
trail
ran
uphill
alongside
a
stone
wall.
It
was
easy
to
follow
because
red
markers
were
nailed
to
the
trees
and
the
snow
had
been
packed
down
by
other
hikers.
At
the
top
of
the
hill,
we
turned
onto
the
purple
trail.
We
settled
into
a
pattern,
with
Dad
and
everyone
else
in
front
and
me
in
the
back,
crunching(嘎吱嘎吱地踩)
through
the
snow.
I
saw
lots
of
animal
tracks-mostly
deer,
squirrel,
and
rabbit
prints.
As
the
trail
wound
down,
my
cousin
Andrew
said
what
I'd
been
thinking:
"Will
we
ever
reach
Giant
Rock?"
My
cousin
Aiden
smiled
and
turned
to
me,
"Luke,
do
you
think
your
dad
invented
this
idea
just
to
get
us
away
from
the
TV
for
a
while?"
I
laughed.
"You
never
know."
Finally,
we
climbed
a
hill
and
saw
the
massive
boulder
sitting
alone
in
the
forest.
It
really
is
as
big
as
a
house!
My
cousins
and
I
high-fived
each
other
and
jogged
until
we
stood
at
the
base,
breathless.
Standing
in
the
boulder's
broad
shadow,
I
noticed
the
sun
had
sunk
lower.
"Let's
head
back,"
Dad
said
after
a
few
minutes.
"There
will
be
several
crossroads
on
the
way
back.
Guys,
keep
up
with
the
team."
Soon
we
were
crunch-crunch-crunching
our
way
home.
I
was
a
little
behind
the
group
when
we
approached
a
crossroads.
And
I
noticed
a
set
of
animal
tracks
I
didn't
recognize,
so
I
followed
them
for
a
closer
look.
[注意]
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
I
looked
up
when
I
suddenly
realized
how
quiet
it
had
gotten.
When
going
worriedly,
I
heard
voices,
someone
calling
far
away.
