Ⅱ.阅读理解
阅读下列短文,从每题A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出一个能回答所提问题或完成所给句子的最佳答案。(40分)
A
If
you
put
your
history
notes
under
your
pillow(枕头)
and
sleep
on
them
the
night
before
an
exam,
will
you
do
any
better
in
the
exam?
Most
of
us
have
hoped
this
might
help.
However,
knowledge
can't
go
through
the
pillow
into
your
brain.
But
that
doesn't
mean
you
can't
learn
while
you
are
asleep.
Scientists
aren't
exactly
sure
how
it
works,
but
they
have
discovered
that
the
brain
can
learn
things
during
sleeping
hours.
In
one
experiment,
researchers
gave
German
speakers
some
Dutch
words
to
learn.
Then,
they
divide
them
into
three
groups.
The
researchers
played
the
Dutch
words
for
people
in
Group
1
while
they
were
asleep,
without
telling
these
German
speakers
what
they
were
doing.
The
sound
was
low.
So
it
didn't
wake
them
up,
and
only
the
newly
introduced
words
were
used.
Another
group
listened
to
the
same
words
while
they
were
awake.
The
researchers
found
the
people
in
Group
1
were
better
able
to
identify
and
translate
the
words
later.
This
was
true
only
for
the
words
that
were
played
while
they
slept.
The
third
group
listened
to
words
when
they
walked.
The
walkers
didn't
have
the
same
success
remembering
the
words
as
the
sleeping
group.
The
researchers
later
found
that
people
had
more
slow
wave(慢波的)
brain
activity
all
over
the
night.
They
said
that
more
slow
waves
made
people
have
a
better
memory
for
the
new
words.
(
)1.When

the
researchers
play
foreign
words
for
people
in

a
walk.
B
.Before
they
went
to
bed.
C
.When
they
were
asleep.
D
.When

were
having
dinner.

does
the

mean
in
Chinese?
A

is

A
.Scientists

B

learning
Dutch
words.
C
.Slow-wave

Most
middle
school
students
in
the
US
go
to
school
for
at
least
990
hours
a
year.
This
autumn,
some
schools
in
Colorado,
Connecticut,
Massachusetts,
New
York,
and
Tennessee
will
add
300
hours
to
the
school
year.
Supporters
of
a
longer
school
year
say
that
kids
who
spend
more
time
in
class
get
better
grades.
They
think
that
kids
in
countries
who
spend
more
time
at
school
or
studying
are
better
prepared
to
start
college
or
find
jobs
after
graduation
(毕业).
“Schools
need
more
teaching
time
if
they
are
going
to
prepare
students
to
be
more
successful
in
the
21st
century,”
says
Luis
Ubinas
of
the
Ford
Foundation,
which
supports
a
longer
school
year.
Jennifer
Davis,
the
president
of
the
National
Center
on
Time
&
Learning,
says
that
many
schools
use
the
added
time
to
provide
extra
(额外的)
help,
like
computer
science
and
music.
However,
some
people
don’t
think
the
longer
school
year
means
that
students
will
learn
more
or
get
better
grades.
A
recent
study
by
the
Center
for
Public
Education
found
that
kids
in
some
countries,
including
Finland
and
Japan,
do
better
than
US
students
on
standardized
tests
even
though
they
spend
less
time
in
the
classroom.
Other
people
argue
that
adding
time
to
the
school
year
is
too
expensive.
Many
schools
simply
can’t
afford
to
pay
teachers
to
work
the
extra
hours.
Tina
Bruno,
the
director
of
the
Coalition
for
a
Traditional
School
Calendar,
says
that
kids
need
time
to
play
sports,
take
part
in
after-school
activities,
and
learn
new
things
on
their
own.
“Before
lengthening
(延长)
class
time
and
taking
away
outside
learning
chances,”
Bruno
says,
“let’s
make
every
minute
count
in
their
present
school
day.”

The
British

started
a

Mandarin
Excellence

Program.
The
program
will
have
helped
over
5,000
British
students
to

fluent
(流利的)
in
Mandarin
Chinese
by
2020.
The
program
is
led

So
far,
14

Hundreds
of
secondary
school
students
in
England
have
taken
lessons
in
Mandarin
Chinese.
Over
the
next
three
years,
they
will
spend
eight
hours
studying
Mandarin
Chinese
every
week.
Ned
Miller
is
an
officer
of
the
British
government.
He
said
a
high
level
of
fluency
in
Mandarin
Chinese
would
become
more

more
important.
"Language

Mandarin

in
the

It
is
also
one

the

to

If
the

we
do
need
far
more
of
our
young
people
leaving
school
with
a
good

of
Mandarin
Chinese,"
Miller
added.
"We
hope
that
our

could
be
given
the
chance
to
study
the
language.
We
want
them
to
be
fluent
in
both
spoken
and
written
Mandarin.
The
Mandarin
Excellence
Program
will
help
us
do
this.
It
will
not
only
open
the
students'
eyes,
but
also
give
them
a
great
advantage
when
they
enter
the
world
of
work."
British
kids,
in
fact,
are
not
alone.
In
America,
about
200,000
students
are
studying
Mandarin
Chinese.
It
is
believed
that
800,000
more
will
join
them
over
the
next
couple
of
years.

A
bestseller,
Willpower:
Rediscovering
Our
Greatest
Strength,
suggests
that
willpower(意志力)is
the
ability
to
make
decisions
that
are
better
for
us
in
the
long
term,
rather
than
in
the
short
term.
Here
is
a
famous
experiment
in
the
book:
The
Marshmallow
Test.
In
1972,
Professor
Walter
Mischel
tested
the
willpower
of
600
four-year-olds
to
six-year-olds.
In
the
experiment,
each
child
was
left
alone
in
a
room
for
fifteen
minutes
with
a
marshmallow(棉花软糖)on
a
table
in
front
of
them.
They
were
given
two
choices:
they
could
either
eat
it
or,
if
they
waited
fifteen
minutes,
they'd
be
given
a
second
one(and
then
they
could
eat
both).
So,
what
did
the
kids
do?
Well,
as
you
can
imagine,
70%
ate
the
first
marshmallow
within
the
fifteen
minutes.
But
the
other
30%
showed
willpower—they
controlled
themselves
and
waited
for
the
second
marshmallow.
But
then
Mischel
discovered
something
really
interesting.
Twenty
years
later,
he
got
in
touch
with
the
children,
who,
by
then,
were
in
their
early
twenties.
And
he
found
that
those
who'd
shown
strong
willpower
were
getting
better
marks
at
university
and
were
more
popular.
Willpower
is
like
a
muscle
(肌肉),
and
the
more
you
exercise
it,
the
stronger
it
gets.
So,
if
you
do
daily
"self-control
exercises",
such
as
making
your
bed
or
brushing
your
teeth,
you'll
improve
your
overall
willpower.
And
daily
willpower
exercises
will
help
you
with
those
bigger
goals,
such
as
studying
for
an
exam
or
training
for
a
marathon.
Be
careful
though.
Just
like
any
muscle,
your
"willpower
muscle"
can
get
tired.
If
you've
had
to
do
lots
of
things
that
require
willpower,
take
a
break
or
give
yourself
a
treat.That
way,
you'll
build
up
your
willpower
again.
And
one
last
thing,
the
writer
mentions
people
who
learn
foreign
languages
usually
have
a
lot
of
willpower.
So,
congratulations!
