Module 2 Traffic Jam

I.教学内容分析
本模块的话题是交通。阅读部分介绍了北京市公交系统以及相关的车辆情况,听力部分介绍了交通阻塞的问题。本模块的词汇、句型、语法、语篇的中心内容以及听说读写等学生活动都围绕上述主题而展开。教师可以围绕上述主题,设计和组织相关的活动,如组织学生采访公交公司、交警等,然后进行交流,在活动中发展学生的语言能力,同时也增强他们的社会公德。
Introduction
该部分介绍了有关各种车辆的词汇,包括三个活动。通过这些活动,学生可以初步熟悉这些词的意义,为接下去的阅读活动做好准备。
Reading and Vocabulary
该部分介绍了北京市公交系统以及相关的车辆情况,并引入了与交通和出行相关的词汇。围绕着课文,编者设计了三个与课文内容和词汇有关的练习。通过这些练习,学生可以熟悉课文内容,学会使用与课文内容有关的词汇。
Function
该部分介绍了交际功能“提出忠告”(giving advice)的语句。要求学生学习一下几种句型:
1) You should check the cab has a business permit.
2) Make sure you ask for a receipt.
3) It’s a good idea to have your destination written in Chinese.
Listening and Speaking
该部分用听力活动的形式引入了本模块的主要内容之一“交通阻塞”,同时也引入了相关词汇。该部分有四个相关的活动。
Vocabulary
该部分进一步引入了有关城市交通的词汇,这些词为复合词。教材通过让学生做组词、词义匹配练习的方式,帮助学生理解这些复合词的含义。
Pronunciation
该部分介绍了英语语音中爆破音和爆破音及其他部分辅音相邻时的读法,并提供了有关的练习。教材要求先让学生听,认识这种连读的现象,然后进行朗读练习。
Grammar
该部分语法处理祈使句。该部分附有三个活动,第一个活动帮助学生认识这种语法现象;其余两个活动为巩固性活动。
Speaking
该部分的活动与听力内容相结合,进一步拓展模块主题:学生先操练“提建议”的句型,谈谈本市的交通问题,然后提出改进建议。
Writing
该部分的写作内容与本模块的主题密切结合,教材要求学生先读后写,所阅读的短文实际上是学生应该模仿的范文,范文后所附问题为写作要点。
Everyday English
该部分要求学生理解所列出的四个日常英语表达法,并附有相关的巩固性活动。
Cultural Corner
该部分介绍了伦敦市政府为减少交通阻塞而采取的一种收费制度,帮助学生扩大知识面。
Task
该部分的任务要求学生编写一张海报,对访问学生所在城市的人们提出与交通有关的建议。
Module File
此部分为本模块主要内容的总结归纳,可帮助师生回顾本模块的重要内容,反思教学过程。
II.教学重点和难点
1.教学重点
(1)本模块的生词和短语。
(2)弄清祈使句的用法和含义。
(3)有关绿色健康出行方式的讨论。
2.教学难点
(1)学会谈论绿色健康出行方式并将其输出为文字形式(Writing)。
(2)了解一些有关绿色健康出行方式的信息。

IV.教学步骤
Period 1 Introduction,Vocabulary
& Reading and Vocabulary
Teaching Goals:
1.To arouse Ss’ interest in learning about traffic means &problems around Chinese cities.
2.To develop Ss’ ability in discussing.
3. To make Ss learn more words about traffic.
Teaching Procedures:
Step 1.Introduction & Vocabulary (P15)
Purpose:To activate Ss and arouse them to talk about traffic means &problems.
1.Leading-in
Say the following sentences and ask some questions:
Everyday, I drive to work. And sometimes I come across some traffic problems. How about you Do you know English names of means of transport you take Do you like the means Have you ever got stuck in a traffic jam or other traffic problems
2.Vocabulary
Ask Ss to go through the words in Task 1 to tick out the new ones for them.And I explain them in English. Ss can write down the Chinese meaning.
Coach: a bus you take for a long distance, eg. If you go from Chengdu to Chongqing, you can take a coach.
Trolleybus: a bus that uses electricity as it’s power.
Then ask Ss to match some of the words with their definitions in Task 1.
3. Vocabulary on P 15
Ask Ss to read the 2 words in Task 1: traffic jam and roadworks, and think about: how are the words formed
Then ask Ss to finish the AB matching to form more new words about traffic. Then I check the answer.
Then ask Ss to finish Task 2 to consolidate the new compound words.
I teach Ss to read the new words in Introduction & Vocabulary, giving Ss the task that they think about the meaning while reading.
4.Complete the table on P 11.
Ask Ss to fill in the table according to their own situations.
5. Group work
Divide Ss in groups of 2 to ask and answer questions of Task 3 in turn.
Step 2.Reading and vocabulary
Purpose:To develop Ss’ reading ability;
Make Ss learn about traffic in Beijing besides Chengdu.
1. Ask Ss to go through the words in Task 3, P13.I explain the new words in English and Ss guess the Chinese meaning. Then read the words aloud and ask them to remember words by heart. The Ss write down the words in terms of the definition to learn them better.
2. give Ss 5 minutes to read the passage and 2 minutes to answer the questions in Task 2 in brief.

Period 2 Function, Speaking, Listening and Speaking, Pronunciation& Everyday English
Teaching Goals:
1.To increase Ss’ listening , pronunciation and spoken English.
2.To make Ss prepare for traffic problems and solutions to them.
Teaching Procedures:
Step 1.Revision
Purpose:To let Ss review the words in the last period and lead them to the new content.
1.Ask Ss the following question:
Do you still remember the words in the last course
I say the definitions to let Ss say out the words:
Bike, boat, bus, coach, helicopter, motorbike, taxi, trolleybus, truck, underground;
Traffic jam, roadworks, bicycle lane, city center, ring road, rush hour and traffic lights
2.Ask Ss to say out the means of transport of Beijing :
Taxi, buses and trolleybuses, minibus, underground and pedicabs
Step 2.Listening
1.Lead-in
T:We have learned something about Beijing’s traffic in Reading, but do you think there will be some problems Let’s listen to some inhabitants from Beijing to talk about the traffic problems there.

Period 3 Writing
Teaching Goals:
1.To get Ss to revise how to talk about and write about traffic problems and solutions.To increase Ss’ speaking& writing.
2.To increase Ss’ creation from discussion and writing.
Teaching Procedures:
Step 1.Lead-in
1. I play a funny cartoon video about traffic jam for Ss. Then ask Ss questions:
What did you see I saw lots of cars, buses…
What can you think of I can think of traffic jams.
Have you ever been stuck in traffic jams
How did you feel (anxious, worried, angry… complain)
Is it useful to complain about the traffic jam No.
Then what should we do To find out causes and come up with
solutions.
2. In our everyday life, traffic jams and other problems always come along with us. Let’s look at some pictures. (I show Ss some pictures, Words and expressions are also shown to Ss attached to pictures.)
Step2. Writing:
T: Here we have a student who wrote something about the traffic problems in his own town as well as some solutions. That means he gave some advice to the government. Please read the passage, complete the table and answer the question:

Because 1st part is about traffic problems and causes, while 2nd is about solutions.

2. Discussion
T: We use traffic every day just like the writer, and of course we come across problems just like the writer too. Now let’s come up with some traffic problems around us in Chengdu and also some solutions to them. That’s the discussion for you. Can you think out some causes and solutions to them I’ll give you 5 minutes to have a discussion. I wish you could suggest as many solutions as possible. When you have your own ideas, please write down them in the table. And of course new ideas are quite welcome!
(Discussion of 5 minutes. And if I hear some smart expressions from Ss, I also write them on the blackboard.)
The whole discussion is divided into 2 periods. The first one is just for causes, while the second is for solutions. I ask Ss to report their causes and solutions, one student, one idea.

Ask the students to choose a problem and their own different solutions to it.

5. Show time
