读后续写之如何续写故事开头
一个好的故事开头就好比是一堂成功的课的导入,能够迅速抓住学生和老师们的兴趣,并且愿意听下去,跟着授课老师的思路走。一个好的故事开头就好比是一个带着香味十足的诱饵,诱使读者上钩并且饶有趣味地看完。而一个拙劣的故事开头,定会让读者大倒胃口,恹恹欲睡。可见,写好一个好故事的好开头是多么的重要。那么在时间紧迫的考场上的英语读后续写的过程中,如何写出靓丽的开头呢?我们可以从语法手段和写作涉及的内容来具体涉及故事的开端。

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Boys
like
to
be
considered
to
be
brave,
but
what
kind
of
things
can
be
considered
to
be
brave?
It
is
not
a
question
that
can
be
answered
by
words,
but
by
the
actual
deed.
A
boy
with
the
name
Henry
gave
us
a
good
example.
Ronny
and
Henry
were
two
friends
in
the
same
class.
They
always
played
together
and
went
home
together.
One
day
as
Ronny
and
Henry
were
going
home
after
school,
they
saw
some
people
fighting
in
the
street
corner.
Ronny
said
excitedly,
“Some
people
are
fighting!
Let’s
go
and
have
a
look!”
But
Henry
refused,
“It’s
none
of
our
business.
We’d
better
go
home
and
don’t
get
close
to
them.
Also
our
parents
are
expecting
to
have
dinner
with
us
together
at
home
and
I
don’t
want
them
to
worry
about
me.”
“You
are
a
coward,
and
afraid
to
go,”
said
Ronny,
and
off
he
ran
to
the
spot
with
some
other
boys.
Henry
had
to
go
home
alone
and
didn't
think
about
it
anymore.
But
Ronny
thought
Henry
was
a
coward
and
told
all
the
boys
that.
They
laughed
at
him
a
great
deal.
From
then
on,
they
looked
down
upon
Henry
and
didn’t
want
to
play
with
him.
Henry
was
sad
but
he
wasn’t
angry
with
Ronny
for
his
rude
behavior,
because
he
had
learned
that
true
courage
was
shown
most
in
bearing
misunderstanding
when
it
was
not
deserved,
and
that
he
ought
to
be
afraid
of
nothing
but
doing
wrong.
Thus,
he
just
ignored
the
other
boys’
laughter
and
continued
to
stick
to
his
thought
and
go
to
school
and
study
as
well.
However,
Ronny
didn’t
invite
Henry
to
go
home
with
him
anymore.
Instead,
he
had
his
new
friends
who
also
thought
Henry
was
a
coward.
Every
day
after
school,
they
didn't
go
home
directly
but
went
to
the
river
or
somewhere
to
play
games
and
had
lots
of
fun.

A
few
days
later,
something
terrible
happened
to
Ronny.
That
afternoon
after
school,
Ronny
was
bathing
with
some
of
his
new
friends
in
the
river
happily.
Suddenly,
he
was
stuck
in
the
mud
and
couldn’t
get
out.
He
struggled
hard
but
he
was
still
trapped.
He
screamed
for
help,
but
all
in
vain.
The
boys
who
had
called
Henry
a
coward
got
out
of
the
water
as
fast
as
they
could.
They
were
so
scared
and
did
not
even
try
to
help
him.
At
that
moment,
Henry
happened
to
pass
by.
He
heard
the
screams
and
ran
to
the
river
as
soon
as
possible.
Seeing
Ronny
was
almost
drowned,
Henry
took
off
his
clothes
immediately
and
jumped
into
the
water
without
any
hesitation.
He
reached
Ronny
just
as
he
was
sinking
the
last
time.
With
great
effort,
and
with
much
danger
to
himself,
he
brought
Ronny
to
the
shore
in
time.
Henry
was
happy
to
help
his
friend,
though
he
was
extremely
tired.
【写作分析】这是一篇记叙文。文章中的男孩亨利因为没有和朋友罗尼一起去凑热闹看别人打架,而被罗尼叫做懦夫并且受到了排挤,但亨利知道真正的勇气体现在容忍不该容忍的误解,罗尼的新朋友们也都觉得亨利是个懦夫。几天后,罗尼和新朋友们在河里洗澡时,不小心陷在泥里,他的新朋友们没有帮助他,而亨利在路过时听到了求救声后用尽他的力气帮助了罗尼。
【写作步骤】
1.段落续写:
①由第一段首句内容“几天后,在罗尼身上发生了可怕的事情”可知,第一段可描写罗尼遇到的可怕事情,同时承接上文中罗尼交往了一些新朋友的剧情,描写罗尼的新朋友在他遇到可怕事情时候的反应,如新朋友们看到罗尼陷入困境时一个个都赶紧离开。
②由第二段首句内容“就在那时,亨利碰巧经过。”可知,第二段可描写亨利在看到罗尼遭到不好事情时的反应。前文提到罗尼嘲笑亨利是个懦夫,但在这一段可描写亨利的勇敢救人的行为,以形成情节上的转折。
2.续写线索:罗尼陷入困境——朋友逃离现场——亨利及时出手相助——帮助罗尼非常高兴

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I
took
a
job
as
a
receptionist
for
a
veterinarian
weeks
ago.
As
an
enthusiastic
animal
lover,
I
accepted
the
position
on
the
condition
that
I
wouldn’t
have
to
assist
with
any
wounded
animals.
I
couldn’t
bear
to
see
any
creature
in
pain.
At
the
end
of
my
first
week,
we
were
about
to
close
the
office
for
the
day
when
a
young
man
in
his
thirties
ran
up
to
us
holding
a
severely
injured
Doberman
pinscher
puppy
in
his
arms
and
begging
us
to
save
his
life.
The
four-month-old
pup
had
been
hit
by
a
car.
The
doctor
and
I
rushed
back
into
the
operating
room
immediately.
The
poor
creature
was
in
critical
condition.
The
only
place
the
skin
was
still
attached
to
this
poor
little
animal’s
body
was
around
one
shoulder.
The
vet
worked
tirelessly
for
what
seemed
like
hours,
stitching
him
back
together
again.
That
was
the
easy
part.
The
puppy
had
broken
multiple
bones,
including
his
spine.
If
he
was
lucky
enough
to
survive
the
next
few
days,
we
were
quite
sure
he
would
never
walk
again.
The
day
forever
changed
my
life.
The
veterinarian
instructed
me,
and
I
became
his
assistant
in
all
things
medical.
One
of
my
first
jobs
was
to
give
that
Doberman
puppy
daily
physical
therapy.
I
moved
his
tiny
legs
on
a
regular
basis
to
keep
his
muscles
from
weakening.
Weeks
went
by
until
one
day,
I
felt
this
little
fighter
push
back
ever
so
slightly.
And
he
continued
to
push
back
till
he
could
finally
use
his
legs.
What
a
miracle!
Day
by
day,
the
little
fighter
made
a
little
bit
progress
until
the
vet
called
his
owner
telling
him
that
his
puppy
was
ready
to
go
home.
Having
accompanied
the
puppy
for
several
months,
I
could
imagine
how
excited
and
relieved
the
young
man
was.
And
I
was
sure
he
would
took
good
care
of.
Two
days
later,
the
puppy
was
taken
away
by
his
owner.

The

“Martha,”

I
cried
on

【写作分析】本文以人物为线索展开,讲述了作者的学校在九年级的毕业典礼上会奖励一件漂亮的金绿色的夹克给9年来成绩最好的学生,作者一直是优等生,渴望得到那件夹克,但是偶然听到Mr.
Schmidt老师和校长争论夹克到底给她还是Joann。后来祖父告诉作者买来的奖不能叫奖。校长最后也把夹克奖给了作者。
【写作步骤】
1.段落续写:
①.由第一段首句内容“当我回到家时,我的眼睛又红又肿。我在豆地里找到了祖父。”可知,第一段可描写作者告诉了祖父发生的一切,祖父告诉作者买来的奖不能叫奖。
②.由第二段首句内容“第二天,我拖着沉重的脚步走进校长办公室,既伤心又失望。”可知,第二段可描写作者伤心地告诉校长自己买不起夹克,但是校长最后还是把夹克奖给了作者。
2.续写线索:找到祖父——告诉发生的事——作者心理情绪——祖父叹息感慨——走到校长办公室——告诉校长买不起——校长更改主意——作者得到夹克

Dad

Every
night,
I

Waited
to

the
creaky

Dad’s

Waited
to

the
sound
of

dropping
on
the

and
his

calling,
“I’m

Every

as
I
lay
there,
I
stared
at
the

the

Mom

from

(麻布袋).
Every
night,
Mom
came
to

She
had
been

“Go

maybe

Early
the

the
smell
of
coffee
woke
me.
I
ran
into
the
kitchen.
There
he
was!
Dad
lifted
me
onto
his
shoulders
and
pretended
to
stagger
from
my
weight.
“How’s
my
boy?
You’ve
gotten
so
big
that
I
can
barely
lift
you
up
anymore.”
He
put
me
down,
and
I
stared
at
the
two
sacks
on
the
table.
One
said
FLOUR

I
knew
that
word.
I
tried
reading
the
other:
S-U-G-A-R.
Dad
whistled
admiringly
and
winked
at
me.
Mom
and
I
had
been
practicing
my
letters
most
days.
I
could
see
that
Mom
was
pleased
with
me.
“I’m

Mom’s

The

“Never

Mom

I

【写作分析】本篇书面表达是读后续写。所给文章为记叙文,以苹果酱和苹果派为线索。作者家的厨房中有一张木桌和三把椅子,分别是爸爸的妈妈的和作者的。爸爸出门务工,每当地窖中的最后一瓶苹果酱被放到桌上,等待被做成苹果派的时候,就是爸爸回家的时候。作者和妈妈每个晚上都在等爸爸回家。感恩节的时候爸爸终于回家了,妈妈要给爸爸做苹果派,并让作者去把地窖的苹果酱拿出来。
【写作步骤】
1.段落续写
第一段首句内容为“听到这话,我一两步走到地窖”。可知,第一段可描写作者听了母亲话后去地窖拿苹果酱的经历。
第二点首句内容为“没关系,孩子,意外总会发生的,”爸爸说着擦干了我的眼泪。可知,第二段可能描写作者在拿苹果酱时发生了意外后,爸爸妈妈给作者的安慰。
2.续写线索:急匆匆拿果酱——摔了一跤——爸爸安慰——妈妈接着做水果派

【写作分析】文章以人物为线索展开,讲述了Rachel是一个笨拙的人,总是会破坏周围的东西,一天Rachel的妈妈生病了,妈妈想让她去Mrs.
Willow家要一些感冒药,并嘱咐她Mrs.
Willow家里有很多精致的东西,最好不要进她的家门。
【写作步骤】
1.段落续写
①由第一段首句内容“到处都是美丽的东西——漂亮的瓷器和精致的花瓶。”可知,第一段可描写Rachel进了Mrs.
Willow家门后,行为举止很拘束,最后还是打碎了一个瓶子。
②由第二段首句内容“威洛太太微笑着安慰她说,它以前也坏过。”可知,第二段可描写Mrs.
Willow安慰了Rachel并很好地招待了她。
2.续写线索:Rachel害怕打碎东西——迫不及待想离开——感谢Mrs.
Willow——撞到了花瓶,花瓶碎了——Mrs.
Willow安慰Rachel——打扫花瓶——享受好的食物

I
am
a
doctor,
so
I
love
my
job.
I
always
have,
but
I
feel
particularly
proud
to
do
it
at
the
moment.
With
COVID-19
sweeping
through
Wuhan,
people
are
avoiding
hospitals
as
possible
they
can.
However,
pregnant
women
still
need
to
come
into
the
hospital.
Babies
still
need
to
be
born.
Right
now,
it
is
even
scarier
for
these
women,
as
they
have
to
come
in
on
their
own,
often
feeling
frightened.
Their
families
are
separated
from
them
due
to
safety
measures.
We’ve
always
provided
physical
support,
but
now
we
are
doing
so
on
a
different
level

we
also
have
to
keep
them
company
and
offer
emotional
support.
Unfortunately,
some
of
the
women
have
caught
corona-virus,
and
being
at
the
hospital
puts
me
at
risk.
Personally,
I
feel
protected
because
we
have
full
personal
protective
equipment,
which
we
wear
all
through
our
13-hour
shifts.
You
don’t
know
if
someone
is
carrying
corona-virus
or
not.
I
didn’t
want
to
put
my
family
in
danger
by
bringing
the
virus
home
and
possibly
passing
it
on
to
them.
As
a
single
parent
to
my
children,
Xiaohua,
12
years
old,
and
Xiaoyong,
9,
I
realized
I
had
to
make
a
very
tough
decision
about
my
family’s
safety
when
the
country
went
into
lockdown.
Giving
up
work
wasn’t
an
option
for
me.
I
wanted
to
be
able
to
look
after
the
women
who
were
feeling
poorly
and
very
scared,
but
I
could
not
leave
my
little
angels
behind
either.
At
this
point,
my
sister
suggested
that
the
children
stay
with
her
and
her
husband
for
the
time
being
and
leave
me
to
my
hospital
duties.
I
thought
it
was
a
great
idea,
so
we
set
a
date
for
her
to
pick
them
up.
When
I
explained
the
situation
to
my
angels
and
told
them
they
needed
to
stay
with
their
aunt
for
a
while,
they
both
seemed
upset,
but
agreed
to
go.
On
the
day
I
saw
them
off,
they
kept
looking
back
at
me
until
they
were
too
far
to
be
seen.

读后续写之如何续写故事开头
一个好的故事开头就好比是一堂成功的课的导入,能够迅速抓住学生和老师们的兴趣,并且愿意听下去,跟着授课老师的思路走。一个好的故事开头就好比是一个带着香味十足的诱饵,诱使读者上钩并且饶有趣味地看完。而一个拙劣的故事开头,定会让读者大倒胃口,恹恹欲睡。可见,写好一个好故事的好开头是多么的重要。那么在时间紧迫的考场上的英语读后续写的过程中,如何写出靓丽的开头呢?我们可以从语法手段和写作涉及的内容来具体涉及故事的开端。

Boys
like
to
be
considered
to
be
brave,
but
what
kind
of
things
can
be
considered
to
be
brave?
It
is
not
a
question
that
can
be
answered
by
words,
but
by
the
actual
deed.
A
boy
with
the
name
Henry
gave
us
a
good
example.
Ronny
and
Henry
were
two
friends
in
the
same
class.
They
always
played
together
and
went
home
together.
One
day
as
Ronny
and
Henry
were
going
home
after
school,
they
saw
some
people
fighting
in
the
street
corner.
Ronny
said
excitedly,
“Some
people
are
fighting!
Let’s
go
and
have
a
look!”
But
Henry
refused,
“It’s
none
of
our
business.
We’d
better
go
home
and
don’t
get
close
to
them.
Also
our
parents
are
expecting
to
have
dinner
with
us
together
at
home
and
I
don’t
want
them
to
worry
about
me.”
“You
are
a
coward,
and
afraid
to
go,”
said
Ronny,
and
off
he
ran
to
the
spot
with
some
other
boys.
Henry
had
to
go
home
alone
and
didn't
think
about
it
anymore.
But
Ronny
thought
Henry
was
a
coward
and
told
all
the
boys
that.
They
laughed
at
him
a
great
deal.
From
then
on,
they
looked
down
upon
Henry
and
didn’t
want
to
play
with
him.
Henry
was
sad
but
he
wasn’t
angry
with
Ronny
for
his
rude
behavior,
because
he
had
learned
that
true
courage
was
shown
most
in
bearing
misunderstanding
when
it
was
not
deserved,
and
that
he
ought
to
be
afraid
of
nothing
but
doing
wrong.
Thus,
he
just
ignored
the
other
boys’
laughter
and
continued
to
stick
to
his
thought
and
go
to
school
and
study
as
well.
However,
Ronny
didn’t
invite
Henry
to
go
home
with
him
anymore.
Instead,
he
had
his
new
friends
who
also
thought
Henry
was
a
coward.
Every
day
after
school,
they
didn't
go
home
directly
but
went
to
the
river
or
somewhere
to
play
games
and
had
lots
of
fun.

I
took
a
job
as
a
receptionist
for
a
veterinarian
weeks
ago.
As
an
enthusiastic
animal
lover,
I
accepted
the
position
on
the
condition
that
I
wouldn’t
have
to
assist
with
any
wounded
animals.
I
couldn’t
bear
to
see
any
creature
in
pain.
At
the
end
of
my
first
week,
we
were
about
to
close
the
office
for
the
day
when
a
young
man
in
his
thirties
ran
up
to
us
holding
a
severely
injured
Doberman
pinscher
puppy
in
his
arms
and
begging
us
to
save
his
life.
The
four-month-old
pup
had
been
hit
by
a
car.
The
doctor
and
I
rushed
back
into
the
operating
room
immediately.
The
poor
creature
was
in
critical
condition.
The
only
place
the
skin
was
still
attached
to
this
poor
little
animal’s
body
was
around
one
shoulder.
The
vet
worked
tirelessly
for
what
seemed
like
hours,
stitching
him
back
together
again.
That
was
the
easy
part.
The
puppy
had
broken
multiple
bones,
including
his
spine.
If
he
was
lucky
enough
to
survive
the
next
few
days,
we
were
quite
sure
he
would
never
walk
again.
The
day
forever
changed
my
life.
The
veterinarian
instructed
me,
and
I
became
his
assistant
in
all
things
medical.
One
of
my
first
jobs
was
to
give
that
Doberman
puppy
daily
physical
therapy.
I
moved
his
tiny
legs
on
a
regular
basis
to
keep
his
muscles
from
weakening.
Weeks
went
by
until
one
day,
I
felt
this
little
fighter
push
back
ever
so
slightly.
And
he
continued
to
push
back
till
he
could
finally
use
his
legs.
What
a
miracle!
Day
by
day,
the
little
fighter
made
a
little
bit
progress
until
the
vet
called
his
owner
telling
him
that
his
puppy
was
ready
to
go
home.
Having
accompanied
the
puppy
for
several
months,
I
could
imagine
how
excited
and
relieved
the
young
man
was.
And
I
was
sure
he
would
took
good
care
of.
Two
days
later,
the
puppy
was
taken
away
by
his
owner.

My
school
had
a
tradition
during
the
ninth-grade
graduation:
a
beautiful
gold
and
green
jacket
(the

colors),
was
awarded
to
the
student
who
had
maintained
the
highest
grades
for
nine
years.
I
had
been
a

A

since
the

and
had
looked
forwards
very
much
to
owning
that
jacket.
My
father
was
a
farm
laborer
who
couldn't
earn
enough
money
to
feed
five
children.
I
was
given
to
my
grandparents
to
raise.
There
would
never
be
a
school

jacket
for
us.
This
scholarship
jacket
was
my
only
chance.
One
day
in
May,
I
happened
to
overhear
in
the
office.
Mr.
Schmidt,
my
history
teacher,
and
Mr.
Boone,
my
math
teacher
arguing
about
me.
“I
refuse
to
do
it!
I
don't
care
who
her
father
is;her
grades
can't
match
Martha's
at
all.
I
won't
lie
or
falsify

said
Mr.
Schmidt
angrily.
But
Mr.
Boone's
voice
sounded
calm.
“Joann's
father

not

on
the
Board
(董事会),
he
owns
the

store
in
town:
we
could
say
it
was
a
close
tie
and…”
Shaking
and
sad,
I,
waited
a
few
minutes
and
walked
away.
The
next
day
when
the
principal
called
me
into
his
office.
“Martha,”
he
said,
“There's
been
a
change
in
policy
this
year
regarding
the
scholarship
jacket.
This
year
the
Board
has
decided
to
charge
fifteen
dollars,
which
still
won't
cover
the
complete
cost
of
the
jacket.
So
if
you
are
unable
to
pay
the
money
for
the
jacket,
it
will
be
given
to
the
next
one
in
line.”
Standing
with
all
the
dignity
I
could
find,
I
said,“I'll
speak
to
my
grandfather
about
it,
sir,
and
let
you
know
tomorrow.”
I
cried
on
the
way
home.

In
our
kitchen,
there
was
a
wooden
table
and
three
chairs

one
for
Dad,
one
for
Mom,
and
one
for
me.
In
the
cellar
(地窖),
the
very
last
jar
of
apple
jam
lay
quietly
on
the
shelf,
waiting
to
be
turned
into
an
apple
pie
when
Dad
came
back.
Mom
sat
at
one
end
of
the
table.
I
sat
in
the
middle
between
her
and
Dad.
I
tried
not
to
look
at
Dad’s
empty
place.
Dad
had
gone
to
the
city
to
look
for
work
for
a
long
time.
Every
night,
I
lay
awake
in
bed
and
waited
for
the
train
to
stop.
Waited
to
hear
the
creaky
(嘎吱作响的)
gate
Dad’s
going
to
fix
when
he
came
home.
Waited
to
hear
the
sound
of
his
work
boots
dropping
on
the
step
by
the
kitchen
door,
and
his
voice
calling,
“I’m
home!”
Every
night,
as
I
lay
there,
I
stared
at
the
window
and
the
curtains
Mom
made
from
empty
flour
sacks
(麻布袋).
Every
night,
Mom
came
to
kiss
me
good-night

after
the
train’s
gone
by.
She
had
been
listening,
too.
“Go
to
sleep.
Your
dad
will
be
home
soon.
Maybe
for
Thanksgiving.”
Time
dragging
by,
it
finally
came
the
day
before
Thanksgiving.
I
went
to
sleep
with
the
sound
of
train
wheels
in
my
head,
whispering,
“Maybe
tomorrow,
maybe
tomorrow.”
Early
the
next
morning,
the
smell
of
coffee
woke
me.
I
ran
into
the
kitchen.
There
he
was!
Dad
lifted
me
onto
his
shoulders
and
pretended
to
stagger
from
my
weight.
“How’s
my
boy?
You’ve
gotten
so
big
that
I
can
barely
lift
you
up
anymore.”
He
put
me
down,
and
I
stared
at
the
two
sacks
on
the
table.
One
said
FLOUR

I
knew
that
word.
I
tried
reading
the
other:
S-U-G-A-R.
Dad
whistled
admiringly
and
winked
at
me.
Mom
and
I
had
been
practicing
my
letters
most
days.
I
could
see
that
Mom
was
pleased
with
me.
“I’m
going
to
bake
a
pie
for
your
dad’s
homecoming
dinner.
Jimmy,
bring
me
that
jar
of
apple
jam
from
the
shelf
in
the
cellar.”
Mom
smiled
at
me.

It
was
an
Art
lesson.
Rachel
sat
at
the
desk
watching
her
classmates
busy
preparing
the
water
jars
and
paints.
She
understood
why
Mrs.
Weston
asked
her
to
sit
down
and
got
Lisa
to
fetch
everything
for
her.
It
was
always
a
disaster
when
Rachel
tried
to
do
Art!
Rachel
sighed
and
reached
out
to
dip
her
brush
in
some
black
paint
and—oh,
no!
She
knocked
over
the
jar.
The
water
spread
across
the
desk
and
drowned
the
paper.
Lisa
called
Mrs.
Weston
to
see
what
Rachel
had
done.
Rachel
went
red
in
the
face.
She
jumped
to
her
feet
to
get
a
cloth.
Her
chair
fell
over
backwards.
She
turned
round
and
her
paintbrush
caught
Lisa
across
the
face,
giving
her
a
black
moustache.
Lisa
was
so
surprised
that
she
fell
back
against
a
wire
bookstand.
It
came
crashing
down
and
the
books
went
all
over
the
floor.
How
clumsy
(笨拙的)!
Rachel
thought
as
she
went
home
on
the
bus.
The
bus
stopped
outside
her
house.
She
jumped
up
and
her
elbow
(肘部)
knocked
a
woman’s
hat
right
over
her
eyes.
Oh,
no!
Rachel
said
sorry,
got
off
and
ran
indoors.
Mum
wasn’t
in
the
kitchen
but
lay
in
bed
as
she
caught
an
awful
cold.
Rachel
offered
to
make
a
cup
of
tea
but
Mum
would
rather
wait
for
Dad.
Rachel
sighed.
She
understood
Mum
was
afraid
she
would
spill
(溅出)
it.
“But
would
you
go
to
Mrs.
Willow
for
some
cold
cure?”
asked
Mum.
Rachel
turned
to
the
door
at
once.
“But
Rachel,
Mrs.
Willow’s
house
is
full
of
beautiful
things,
so
if
she
asks
you
to
come
in,
you’d
better
say
no.”
Rachel
sighed
and
ran
out.
Mrs.
Willow
was
an
old
lady
with
white
hair
and
sharp
blue
eyes
living
in
an
old
house.
She
opened
the
door
and
invited
her
in.
Rachel
said
why
she
came
and
that
she
preferred
to
wait
outside
remembering
her
mother’s
warning.
Mrs.
Willow
insisted
Rachel
come
inside.
Rachel
took
a
deep
breath
and
stepped
in.
She
looked
round
Mrs.
Willow’s
sitting
room
and
saw
at
once
why
Mum
had
been
worried.

I
am
a
doctor,
so
I
love
my
job.
I
always
have,
but
I
feel
particularly
proud
to
do
it
at
the
moment.
With
COVID-19
sweeping
through
Wuhan,
people
are
avoiding
hospitals
as
possible
they
can.
However,
pregnant
women
still
need
to
come
into
the
hospital.
Babies
still
need
to
be
born.
Right
now,
it
is
even
scarier
for
these
women,
as
they
have
to
come
in
on
their
own,
often
feeling
frightened.
Their
families
are
separated
from
them
due
to
safety
measures.
We’ve
always
provided
physical
support,
but
now
we
are
doing
so
on
a
different
level

we
also
have
to
keep
them
company
and
offer
emotional
support.
Unfortunately,
some
of
the
women
have
caught
corona-virus,
and
being
at
the
hospital
puts
me
at
risk.
Personally,
I
feel
protected
because
we
have
full
personal
protective
equipment,
which
we
wear
all
through
our
13-hour
shifts.
You
don’t
know
if
someone
is
carrying
corona-virus
or
not.
I
didn’t
want
to
put
my
family
in
danger
by
bringing
the
virus
home
and
possibly
passing
it
on
to
them.
As
a
single
parent
to
my
children,
Xiaohua,
12
years
old,
and
Xiaoyong,
9,
I
realized
I
had
to
make
a
very
tough
decision
about
my
family’s
safety
when
the
country
went
into
lockdown.
Giving
up
work
wasn’t
an
option
for
me.
I
wanted
to
be
able
to
look
after
the
women
who
were
feeling
poorly
and
very
scared,
but
I
could
not
leave
my
little
angels
behind
either.
At
this
point,
my
sister
suggested
that
the
children
stay
with
her
and
her
husband
for
the
time
being
and
leave
me
to
my
hospital
duties.
I
thought
it
was
a
great
idea,
so
we
set
a
date
for
her
to
pick
them
up.
When
I
explained
the
situation
to
my
angels
and
told
them
they
needed
to
stay
with
their
aunt
for
a
while,
they
both
seemed
upset,
but
agreed
to
go.
On
the
day
I
saw
them
off,
they
kept
looking
back
at
me
until
they
were
too
far
to
be
seen.
