读后续写之外貌、性格与环境描写
在读写续写过程中,在沿用原文语言特点的情况下,围绕原文主旨,续写部分可利用恰当的词语描述人物的外貌、性格和周围的环境,丰富续写情节,从而进一步提升续写语篇的可读性。
第一部分
外貌性格描写
一、外貌性格描写的3个原则
①进行外貌描写时,可写对一个人的总体印象,也可以抓住人物重要的外貌特征或性格特点进行描述。如攻略3例题原文中第一段对妈妈性格的描写,采用了loving,
sweet,
absent?minded和forgetful等形容词,使一个可爱又健忘的妈妈的形象跃然纸上。
②可以具体描述人物的五官、着装,甚至可以配上动作描述。
③在描写人物片段时,可写你对人物印象最深的一两点,再加上一两句人物评价。
二、外貌与性格描写的高分素材
(一)外貌描写
(1)

with
a
medium
build
and
has
her

(由and连接的并列句;with短语用作状语,表示伴随状态)
②Miss

a
medium?sized

in
her

who
often
wears/ties
her
hair
in
a

height,
weight,

age,
shape等)
(二)性格描写
①Such

Ms.
Han,
an
easygoing,

family,
he
is
a
person
of
great
determination
and
courage.
他虽出身贫寒,但拥有坚强的意志和勇气。
第二部分
环境描写
一、环境描写的4个原则
①选择与主题和情节设置一致的环境要素,以营造故事发生的特定环境。
②细致深入。所选的景物一定要运用所学的词汇和句法进行细致深入的描写。
③添加附加信息,如天气变化和周边的景物等,如昏暗的路灯、摇曳的树影等。
④环境细节描写一定要与动作和心理活动等相结合,才能更好地完成续写任务。
例如:攻略3第一段续写中可适当描写一下在帐篷中过夜时周围的环境,突出作者内心的祥和、快乐。
二、环境描写的高分素材
①It
was
beginning
to
snow,
and
snowflakes
were
blinding
my
eyes.
天开始下雪了,雪花让我看不清了。
②The
sun
was
breaking
through
the
blanket
of

of
white
frost.

A
Vacation
with
My
Mother
I
had
an
interesting
childhood:
It
was
filled
with
surprise
and
amusements,
all
because
of
my
mother—,

and
yet
and
.
One
strange
family
trip
we
took
when
I
was
eleven
tells
a
lot
about
her.
My
two
sets
of
grandparents
lived
in
Colorado
and
North
Dakota,
and
my
parents
decided
to
spend
a
few
weeks
driving
to
those
states
and
seeing
all
along
the
way.
As
the
first
day
of
our
trip
approached,
David,
my
eight?year?old
brother,
and
I
unwillingly
said
good?bye
to
all
of
our
friends.
Who
knew
if
we'd
ever
see
them
again?
Finally,
the
moment
of
our
departure
arrived,
and
we
loaded
suitcases,
books,
games,
camping
equipment,
and
a
tent
into
the
car
and
bravely
drove
off.
We
bravely
drove
off
again
two
hours
later
after
we'd
returned
home
to
get
the
purse
and
traveler's
checks
Mom
had
forgotten.
David
and
I
were
always
a
little
nervous
when
using
gas
station
bathrooms
if
Mom
was
driving
while
Dad
slept.
“You
stand
outside
the
door
and
play
lookout
while
I
go,
and
I'll
stand
outside
the
door
and
play
lookout
while
you
go.”
I
had
terrible
pictures
in
my
mind:
“Honey,
where
are
the
kids?”
“What?!
Oh,
Gosh
...
I
thought
they
were
being
awfully
quiet.”
We
were
never
actually
left
behind
in
a
strange
city,
but
we
weren't
about
to
take
any
chances.
On
the
fourth
or
fifth
night,
we
had
trouble
finding
a
hotel
with
a
vacancy.
After
driving
in
vain
for
some
time,
Mom
suddenly
got
a
great
idea:
Why
didn't
we
find
a
house
with
a
likely?looking
backyard
and
ask
if
we
could
set
up
the
tent
there?
David
and
I
became
nervous.
To
our
great
relief,
Dad
turned
down
the
idea.
Mom
never
could
understand
our
objections.
If
a
strange
family
showed
up
on
her
front
doorsteps,
Mom
would
have
been
delighted.
She
thinks
everyone
in
the
world
as
nice
as
she
is.
We
finally
found
a
vacancy
in
the
next
town.
Paragraph
1
The
next
day
we
remembered
the
brand?new
tent
we
had
brought
with
us.
Paragraph
2
We
drove
through
several
states
and
saw
lots
of
great
sights
along
the
way.
【描写刻画】
1.细读原文,明确叙述意图
原文基调轻松、温暖。通过介绍一次出游经历,描述妈妈健忘、心不在焉、善良、爱孩子的性格特征。第一段概括妈妈的性格特征;第二段以妈妈遗落钱包的事情来说明妈妈健忘;由第三段担心妈妈遗忘孩子的事,说明妈妈心不在焉,同时侧面反映孩子的靠谱、沉稳;
由最后一段倒数第二和第三句可看出妈妈很善良。
根据人物性格特征,结合续写第二段首句可推测,续写时应设计一件有趣的事来体现“快乐、母爱、温情、亲情”。
2.根据段落开头语,确定续写方向
※根据续写第一段首句中的关键词“we
remembered
the
brand?new
tent”可知,该段应着重描写围绕帐篷发生的有趣的。
※根据续写第二段首句中的关键词“along
the
way”可推断第二段可描述一路上妈妈对孩子的关爱。结合首句中关键词“great
sights”,可简单进行环境描写与原文呼应。
3.围绕原文主旨,进行人物性格和环境描写
①在描写母亲时,以原文对母亲性格的描写为依据,描述一件小事突出母亲的健忘和心不在焉;也利用一些描述性的词语,如read、sing、warmth、comfortable、safe、laughter等描写旅途中母亲所表现出的母爱。这些描写能使母亲的形象更加丰满、高大,“母爱”溢于言表。
②根据原文标题中的关键词vacation,和原文第二段中的“all
her
sights
along
the
way”,可推断出续写部分可适当进行环境描写,体现和母亲共度假期的快乐,一家人的亲情。

My
name
is
Manan,
and
I
am
in
the
sixth
grade.
Of
all
the
festivals,
Diwal
is
a
Hindu
festival
that
is
celebrated
in
autumn,
is
my
favorite
because
I
can
set
off
fireworks
and
eat
delicious
foods
during
the
festival.
One
day,
I
went
shopping
for
fireworks
with
my
grandfather.
I
was
looking
at
the
brightly
colored
fireworks
when
suddenly
I
bumped
into
a
little
boy.
All
my
fireworks
scattered
out
of
the
bag.
I
quickly
bent
down
to
pick
them
up.
Then
I
noticed
the
boy’s
face
was
full
of
wonder
and
amazement
as
he
stared
at
my
fireworks.
It
appeared
as
though
he
had
never
seen
any
this
closely.
When
he
bent
down
to
pick
them
up,
I
snatched
them
from
him
and
quickly
put
them
back
in
my
bag.
As
I
stood
there
looking
at
him,
I
realized
there
was
something
different
about
this
boy.
His
clothes
were
old
and
torn;
he
looked
as
though
he
had
not
eaten
for
a
few
days.
On
reaching
home,
I
finished
my
dinner
quickly
and
ran
out
to
set
off
the
fireworks.
I
was
fascinated
by
the
variety
of
colors
that
burst
open
from
the
fireworks
and
lit
up
the
sky,
but
my
wonder
was
short-lived.
I
noticed
that
my
grandfather
had
gone
inside
the
house
coughing.
Wondering
why,
I
looked
around
and
noticed
all
the
smoke
that
may
have
been
irritating
his
throat.
Feeling
bad
for
only
a
second,
I
continued
lighting
the
fireworks
one
after
another.
But,
inside
me,
it
felt
different—I
felt
guilty
about
taking
pleasure
from
bursting
the
fireworks.
I
could
feel
my
conscience
pricking
me,
“Manan!
How
can
you
do
this?
It
just
takes
a
few
minutes
for
all
the
money
to
disappear
in
smoke,
but
the
boy
you
met
today
looked
like
he
did
not
even
have
the
basic
necessities
of
life.
The
children
in
orphanages
also
need
love
and
help.
Didn’t
you
see
how
your
fireworks
have
affected
Grandpa
too?
Can
you
still
ignore
these
things
and
indulge
in
this
kind
of
fun?”
Realizing
the
worthlessness
of
this
temporary
pleasure,
I
really
wanted
to
use
the
money
in
a
more
rewarding
way.
I
started
thinking
about
my
own
way
to
celebrate
Diwali.

【写作分析】本文以人物为线索展开,讲述了作者在买节日烟花时,遇到了一个衣服又旧又破,看上去好像几天没吃东西的男孩,男孩看到烟花很惊讶。作者放完烟花后发现爷爷因为烟花的刺激不断咳嗽,意识到这种暂时的快乐毫无价值,应该把钱用在更有意义的地方。于是作者和一家人去孤儿院看望了孤儿甚至一起放烟花,作者感觉这是是自己迄今为止庆祝过的最好的排灯节。
【写作步骤】
1.段落续写:
①由第一段首句内容“我走到爷爷面前,把我的计划告诉了他。”可知,第一段可描写爷爷计划去孤儿院和孩子们庆祝节日,描述他们全家去孤儿院的经过。
②由第二段首句内容“很快,孤儿院就充满了笑声、欢乐和庆祝。”可知,第二段可描写作者他们一家在孤儿院和孩子们庆祝节日的过程以及作者的感受。
2.续写线索:告诉爷爷计划——全家去孤儿院——和孤儿院孩子庆祝节日——作者感到满足——作者感悟

Sometimes
things
may
seem
beyond
our
efforts,
but
keep
on
and
you
will
find
beautiful
views
in
front
of
you.
I
was
on
my
second
outdoor
experience
trip
that
every
student
had
to
go
on.
That
year,
we
had
a
choice
of
what
difficulty
level
we
wanted:
one
through
five.
My
friends
and
I
had
agreed
that
one
would
make
us
seem
lazy
and
that
challenging
ourselves
would
make
for
a
good
story.
In
choosing
level
two,
we
believed
that
it
would
still
be
a
fun
experience.
We
were
quickly
proven
wrong.
The
further
we
drove
into
the
White
Mountains,
the
higher
the
walls
on
either
side
of
the
winding
highway
grew.
I
was
still
in
awe
of
the
mountains
I
had
seen
so
many
times
before,
but
I
couldn’t
help
feeling
my
heart
shaking
with
anxiety.
Soon
I
would
have
to
leave
the
school
bus
that
brought
50
students
out
into
the
wilderness
like
every
year
before.
My
group
consisted
of
my
friends,
Riley
and
Ann,
and
six
extremely
athletic
boys.
We
arrived
at
base
camp
lodge
(木屋)
first.
After
putting
things
aside
and
rearranging
our
bags,
we
made
our
way
out
into
the
wilderness.
The
three
of
us
girls
were
questioning
if
this
was
really
a
level
two.
The
path
was
unbelievably
steep
(陡峭)
and
rocky
toward
the
top
of
the
mountain
where
the
first
hut
was
located.
We
were
practically
jogging
in
an
attempt
to
keep
up
with
the
boys
ahead
of
us.
Before
the
trip,
we
were
told
to
take
breaks
as
often
as
we
needed
to
drink
water,
but
that
wasn’t
helping
our
pounding
hearts
and
heavy
breathing
as
much
as
it
should
have.
Then,
30
minutes
into
the
most
difficult
hike
the
three
of
us
had
ever
done,
Riley
slipped
and
landed
on
her
knee.
After
a
few
moments,
we
turned
back
down
the
mountain
as
it
was
decided
that
Riley
could
not
make
the
trip
with
us.
We
sat
on
the
grass
outside
the
lodge
where
we
had
started
while
Riley
was
brought
inside
to
join
the
level
one
group.
Ann
and
I
exchanged
breathless
glances,
our
cheeks
red
and
wet
with
sweat.

【写作分析】本文以人物为线索展开,讲述了主人公Kelly在新冠疫情期间非常苦闷和孤独,有一天她发现了一个童话花园,里面有一张关于4岁女孩Eliana的小纸条,她在隔离中感到孤独想传播一些欢乐。于是Kelly假装是一个住在树上的名叫Sapphire的仙女,给Eliana留纸条说如果Eliana为她做三件事,就会给她一个神奇的仙女骰子。Eliana为她做了这三件事,于是Kelly就送给了她骰子。她们之间的互动就这样继续下去,互相温暖了彼此。后来小女孩一家要搬去另一个城市,Kelly以仙女的模样出现向小女孩告别。
【写作步骤】
1.段落续写:

Finally,

Miss
Bella
cried
as
everyone
started
talking
and

their

Jessy
felt
sick.
She
hated
having
to

aloud
in

She
was
sure
everyone
got
really
bored
listening
to
her.
Once,
when
Jessy
was
reading
out
her
holiday
diary,
Lee
was
even
looking
at
his
watch,
a
silver
and
blue
one
which
seemed
just
magical.
Jessy
watched
Lee
walk
ahead
of
her
as
they
left
school.
He
seemed

and
he
had
a

He

Jessy
sighed.
As
she
turned

corner,
she
saw
Lee’s
watch
lying
right
in
the
middle
of
the
path.
Jessy
knew

it
up
and

it
to
him,
but
she

Jessy

and
ran

On
arriving
home,
Jessy
put
it
on
almost
without
thinking.
She
was
surprised
it
fitted
so
well.
She
walked
to
the

and
started
practicing
her

Words

of
her.
“I’m

I’m
not
really
thinking
about

I’m
just
loving
the
feeling
of
being
in
the
water…”
Jessy
laughed
with
excitement.
She
walked
across
the
room.
She
suddenly
seemed
to
have
a
certain
sort
of
confidence.
Turning
back
to
the
mirror,
Jessy
saw
a
flash
of
light
from
the
watch
in
the
glass.
The
flashes
of
silver
seemed
almost
magical.
So
maybe
Lee’s
watch
really
DID
have
something
magic
about
it.
The
next
day,
as
the
lesson
began,
Miss
Bella
asked
who
was
going
to

first.
Nobody
moved.
Jessy
slowly
raised
her
arm.
Before
Miss
Bella
could
say
anything,
there
was
a
shout
from
behind.
“She’s
stolen
my

Lee
said
angrily,
“It
went
missing
at

yesterday.”

【写作分析】本文以人物为线索,讲述女孩Jessy因为曾经课前演讲不愉快的经历,所以提到课前演讲她就很气馁。想到曾经演讲时,班里一个优秀的全能男孩Lee一直看着自己的手表,以为那个手表有魔力。恰巧
,在路上Jessy捡到了Lee的手表,Jessy知道她应该还回去,但是她并没有。回家以后她毫不犹豫地戴上,发现Lee的手表似乎真的有魔力,让她自信,她的演讲也更加流畅了。第二天课上,Jessy难得的举手想做课前演讲,结果她带着的手表被Lee发现,被质疑偷窃Lee的手表。Jessy请求先演讲再做解释,Jessy的演讲惊艳到了大家。之后,她告诉大家事实以及这个手表的神奇并把手表还给了Lee。但最终,她意识到真正有魔力的是她的自信。
【写作步骤】
1.段落续写:
①由第一段首句内容“大家都盯着Jessy,等待她的解释。”可知,第一段可描写Jessy在被发现带Lee丢失后的处境和原因,以及同学们对此的反应。
②由第二段首句内容“Miss
Bella微笑着让全班同学先听杰西的演讲。”可知,第二段可描写Jessy的精彩演讲以及同学们对Jessy这一精彩表现的反应,最后,以根本原因是Jessy的自信点睛。
2.续写线索:缺乏自信,讨厌课前演讲——捡到手表——带上手表,练习演讲——主动演讲,因手表受到质疑——演讲惊艳,解释手表疑惑——感悟一切源于自信

was
a
meet
because
there
would
be
races
and
timers
and
so
on.
But
her
mother
really
wanted
her
to
go.
She
fought
back
furiously
but
finally
agreed.
When
the
day
of
the
special
swim
night
arrived,
Elizabeth
was
nervous.
When
she
got
to
the
pool
with
her
parents,
she
became
even
more
nervous.
Her
first
race
was
the
50-meter
freestyle.
She
swam
her
backstroke
and
breaststroke
without
incident.
It
wasn’t
fun
for
Elizabeth.
Her
butterflies
just
kept
flapping.
Then
it
was
time
for
the
T-shirt
relay,
which
works
like
this:
One
person
from
each
relay
team
puts
on
a
T-shirt,
a
pair
of
socks,
and
a
swim
cap;
swims
50
meters;
and
gets
out
of
the
pool.
She
takes
off
the
clothes
and
puts
them
on
the
next
person,
who
then
swims
50
meters.
This
continues
until
everyone
on
the
team
has
completed
a
lap.
For
some
unknown
reason,
Elizabeth’s
relay
team
chose
her
to
swim
the
anchor
leg(最后一棒).
The
team
dressed
her
in
socks
and
a
T-shirt.
And
then
she
was
off.
She
seemed
to
swim
faster
in
the
T-shirt
and
socks
than
she
did
when
she
wasn’t
wearing
them.
Approaching
the
halfway
mark,
she
was
still
in
the
lead.
Then
somebody
noticed
that
one
of
Elizabeth’s
socks
had
fallen
off
and
was
floating
in
the
pool.
“She
has
to
get
that
sock
on
before
the
end
of
the
race,”
a
swimming
official
told
Elizabeth’s
team,
“or
you
will
be
disqualified.”

【写作分析】本文以人物为线索展开,讲述了在游泳接力赛中,游最后一棒的伊丽莎白的泳袜意外脱落,她却由于紧张而浑然不知,如果不在比赛结束前穿上将没有成绩,可是任凭队友怎么呼喊她都没有听见,就在即将被赶超之时,一位队友跳入泳池跟着伊丽莎白一起游,给她穿上了泳袜,最后她们赢得了比赛,大家都很高兴。
【写作步骤】
1.段落续写:
①由第一段首句内容“她队里的每个队员都开始尖叫,“伊丽莎白!伊丽莎白!停下!去拿泳袜!””可知,第一段可描写任凭队友怎么呼喊她都没有听见,关键时刻,一位队友跳入泳池跟着伊丽莎白一起游,给她穿泳袜。
②由第二段首句内容“这时,第二泳道里的那个女孩正要超过伊丽莎白”可知,第二段可描写就在即将被赶超之时,伊丽莎白的泳袜终于穿上了,她奋力游最后15米,最后终于赢得了比赛,队员们都很高兴,伊丽莎白成了英雄。
2.续写线索:队友呼喊——浑然不知——队友跳入泳池——即将被赶超——终于穿上泳袜——奋力冲刺——赢得比赛——高兴——成为英雄

读后续写之外貌、性格与环境描写
在读写续写过程中,在沿用原文语言特点的情况下,围绕原文主旨,续写部分可利用恰当的词语描述人物的外貌、性格和周围的环境,丰富续写情节,从而进一步提升续写语篇的可读性。
第一部分
外貌性格描写
一、外貌性格描写的3个原则
①进行外貌描写时,可写对一个人的总体印象,也可以抓住人物重要的外貌特征或性格特点进行描述。如攻略3例题原文中第一段对妈妈性格的描写,采用了loving,
sweet,
absent?minded和forgetful等形容词,使一个可爱又健忘的妈妈的形象跃然纸上。
②可以具体描述人物的五官、着装,甚至可以配上动作描述。
③在描写人物片段时,可写你对人物印象最深的一两点,再加上一两句人物评价。
二、外貌与性格描写的高分素材
(一)外貌描写
(1)

lovely
dimples
on
her
round
face.
(with引导的介宾结构作后置定语,补充说明人物信息)
(2)李老师三十多岁,身材适中,常梳着马尾辫。
①Miss
Li
is
in
her
thirties
with
a
medium
build
and
has
her
hair
in
a
ponytail.
(由and连接的并列句;with短语用作状语,表示伴随状态)
②Miss

is
a
medium?sized
woman
in
her
thirties
who
often
wears/ties
her
hair
in
a
ponytail.
(定语从句补充介绍人物特征)
③Miss

tied
in
a

he
is
a
person
of
great
determination

第二部分
环境描写
一、环境描写的4个原则
①选择与主题和情节设置一致的环境要素,以营造故事发生的特定环境。
②细致深入。所选的景物一定要运用所学的词汇和句法进行细致深入的描写。
③添加附加信息,如天气变化和周边的景物等,如昏暗的路灯、摇曳的树影等。
④环境细节描写一定要与动作和心理活动等相结合,才能更好地完成续写任务。
例如:攻略3第一段续写中可适当描写一下在帐篷中过夜时周围的环境,突出作者内心的祥和、快乐。
二、环境描写的高分素材
①It
was
beginning
to
snow,
and
snowflakes
were
blinding
my
eyes.
天开始下雪了,雪花让我看不清了。
②The
sun
was
breaking
through
the
blanket
of
mist.
太阳穿过薄雾。
③Summer
sees
the
mountains
turn

got
a
great

Why
didn't
we
find
a
house
with
a
likely?looking
backyard
and
ask
if
we
could
set
up
the
tent
there?
David
and
I
became
nervous.
To
our
great
relief,
Dad
turned
down
the
idea.
Mom
never

If

【描写刻画】
1.细读原文,明确叙述意图
原文基调轻松、温暖。通过介绍一次出游经历,描述妈妈健忘、心不在焉、善良、爱孩子的性格特征。第一段概括妈妈的性格特征;第二段以妈妈遗落钱包的事情来说明妈妈健忘;由第三段担心妈妈遗忘孩子的事,说明妈妈心不在焉,同时侧面反映孩子的靠谱、沉稳;
由最后一段倒数第二和第三句可看出妈妈很善良。
根据人物性格特征,结合续写第二段首句可推测,续写时应设计一件有趣的事来体现“快乐、母爱、温情、亲情”。
2.根据段落开头语,确定续写方向
※根据续写第一段首句中的关键词“we
remembered
the
brand?new
tent”可知,该段应着重描写围绕帐篷发生的有趣的。
※根据续写第二段首句中的关键词“along
the
way”可推断第二段可描述一路上妈妈对孩子的关爱。结合首句中关键词“great
sights”,可简单进行环境描写与原文呼应。
3.围绕原文主旨,进行人物性格和环境描写
①在描写母亲时,以原文对母亲性格的描写为依据,描述一件小事突出母亲的健忘和心不在焉;也利用一些描述性的词语,如read、sing、warmth、comfortable、safe、laughter等描写旅途中母亲所表现出的母爱。这些描写能使母亲的形象更加丰满、高大,“母爱”溢于言表。
②根据原文标题中的关键词vacation,和原文第二段中的“all
her
sights
along
the
way”,可推断出续写部分可适当进行环境描写,体现和母亲共度假期的快乐,一家人的亲情。

my
grandfather.
I
was
looking
at
the
brightly
colored
fireworks
when
suddenly
I
bumped
into
a
little
boy.
All
my
fireworks
scattered
out
of
the
bag.
I
quickly
bent
down
to
pick
them
up.
Then
I
noticed
the
boy’s
face
was
full
of
wonder
and
amazement
as
he
stared
at
my
fireworks.
It
appeared
as
though
he
had
never
seen
any
this
closely.
When
he
bent
down
to
pick
them
up,
I
snatched
them
from
him
and
quickly
put
them
back
in
my
bag.
As
I
stood
there
looking
at
him,
I
realized
there
was
something
different
about
this
boy.
His
clothes
were
old
and
torn;
he
looked
as
though
he
had
not
eaten
for
a
few
days.
On
reaching
home,
I
finished
my
dinner
quickly
and
ran
out
to
set
off
the
fireworks.
I
was
fascinated
by
the
variety
of
colors
that
burst
open
from
the
fireworks
and
lit
up
the
sky,
but
my
wonder
was
short-lived.
I
noticed
that
my
grandfather
had
gone
inside
the
house
coughing.
Wondering
why,
I
looked
around
and
noticed
all
the
smoke
that
may
have
been
irritating
his
throat.
Feeling
bad
for
only
a
second,
I
continued
lighting
the
fireworks
one
after
another.
But,
inside
me,
it
felt
different—I
felt
guilty
about
taking
pleasure
from
bursting
the
fireworks.
I
could
feel
my
conscience
pricking
me,
“Manan!
How
can
you
do
this?
It
just
takes
a
few
minutes
for
all
the
money
to
disappear
in
smoke,
but
the
boy
you
met
today
looked
like
he
did
not
even
have
the
basic
necessities
of
life.
The
children
in
orphanages
also
need
love
and
help.
Didn’t
you
see
how
your
fireworks
have
affected
Grandpa
too?
Can
you
still
ignore
these
things
and
indulge
in
this
kind
of
fun?”
Realizing
the
worthlessness
of
this
temporary
pleasure,
I
really
wanted
to
use
the
money
in
a
more
rewarding
way.
I
started
thinking
about
my
own
way
to
celebrate
Diwali.

Sometimes
things
may
seem
beyond
our
efforts,
but
keep
on
and
you
will
find
beautiful
views
in
front
of
you.
I
was
on
my
second
outdoor
experience
trip
that
every
student
had
to
go
on.
That
year,
we
had
a
choice
of
what
difficulty
level
we
wanted:
one
through
five.
My
friends
and
I
had
agreed
that
one
would
make
us
seem
lazy
and
that
challenging
ourselves
would
make
for
a
good
story.
In
choosing
level
two,
we
believed
that
it
would
still
be
a
fun
experience.
We
were
quickly
proven
wrong.
The
further
we
drove
into
the
White
Mountains,
the
higher
the
walls
on
either
side
of
the
winding
highway
grew.
I
was
still
in
awe
of
the
mountains
I
had
seen
so
many
times
before,
but
I
couldn’t
help
feeling
my
heart
shaking
with
anxiety.
Soon
I
would
have
to
leave
the
school
bus
that
brought
50
students
out
into
the
wilderness
like
every
year
before.
My
group
consisted
of
my
friends,
Riley
and
Ann,
and
six
extremely
athletic
boys.
We
arrived
at
base
camp
lodge
(木屋)
first.
After
putting
things
aside
and
rearranging
our
bags,
we
made
our
way
out
into
the
wilderness.
The
three
of
us
girls
were
questioning
if
this
was
really
a
level
two.
The
path
was
unbelievably
steep
(陡峭)
and
rocky
toward
the
top
of
the
mountain
where
the
first
hut
was
located.
We
were
practically
jogging
in
an
attempt
to
keep
up
with
the
boys
ahead
of
us.
Before
the
trip,
we
were
told
to
take
breaks
as
often
as
we
needed
to
drink
water,
but
that
wasn’t
helping
our
pounding
hearts
and
heavy
breathing
as
much
as
it
should
have.
Then,
30
minutes
into
the
most
difficult
hike
the
three
of
us
had
ever
done,
Riley
slipped
and
landed
on
her
knee.
After
a
few
moments,
we
turned
back
down
the
mountain
as
it
was
decided
that
Riley
could
not
make
the
trip
with
us.
We
sat
on
the
grass
outside
the
lodge
where
we
had
started
while
Riley
was
brought
inside
to
join
the
level
one
group.
Ann
and
I
exchanged
breathless
glances,
our
cheeks
red
and
wet
with
sweat.

I
was
born
and
grew
up
in
the
north
of
Scotland,
which
was
not
far
from
the
sea.
When
I
was
little,
I
enjoyed
the
seaside
scenery
very
much.
I
often
sat
on
the
rock
by
the
sea
and
watched
the
view
of
the
sea.
I
was
fond
of
playing
with
the
sand
on
the
beach
and
chased
the
waves
with
my
old
sister,
Alastair.
Across
the
beach
there
was
a
tidal(潮汐)island,
which
means
that
when
the
tide
goes
out,
you
can
walk
to
it,
but
when
the
tide
comes
in
again,
you
can’t
get
to
it.
Mum
and
Dad
never
let
us
go
there.
They
told
us
that
it
was
dangerous.
However,
the
tidal
island
was
full
of
mystery
to
me.
I
said
to
myself,
“There
must
be
some
fascinating
scenery
worth
exploring.
How
I
wish
I
had
a
chance
to
land
on
it!”
On
a
little
cold
day
in
October,
while
my
parents
were
away
for
a
friend’s
wedding,
my
sister
was
determined
to
take
me
to
the
beach
near
our
house,
where
we
would
have
a
good
time.
I
wanted
to
build
sand
castles.
When
we
arrived
at
the
beach,
the
tide
was
out.
We
ran
on
the
beach
back
and
forth
and
enjoyed
ourselves
very
much.
With
the
help
of
my
sister,
I
made
several
sand
castles
of
different
shapes.
Feeling
a
little
tired,
I
sat
on
the
beach
for
a
break.
I
saw
the
tidal
island
opposite,
which
looked
very
nice
in
the
autumn
sunshine.
“Let’s
go
to
explore
the
tidal
island,
Alastair,”
I
said
to
my
sister.
“That’s
a
good
idea.
But
Mum
and
Dad
said
we
couldn’t.
Maybe
we
won’t
return
safely!”
Alastair
said.
“Don’t
worry!
We’ll
try
to
return
before
the
tide
comes
in
again.”
I
begged
Alastair.
Finally
she
agreed.
We
returned
home
and
brought
some
peanut
butter
sandwiches
and
a
bottle
of
milk
with
us.

Finally,
the
bell
rang.
“Don’t
forget
to
practice
your
class
presentation
at
home!”
Miss
Bella
cried
as
everyone
started
talking
and
packing
their
school
bags.
Jessy
felt
sick.
She
hated
having
to
read
aloud
in
class.
She
was
sure
everyone
got
really
bored
listening
to
her.
Once,
when
Jessy
was
reading
out
her
holiday
diary,
Lee
was
even
looking
at
his
watch,
a
silver
and
blue
one
which
seemed
just
magical.
Jessy
watched
Lee
walk
ahead
of
her
as
they
left
school.
He
seemed
so
clever,
and
he
had
a
certain
sort
of
shining
confidence.
He
was
just
one
of
those
people
who
were
good
at
everything.
Jessy
sighed.
As
she
turned
the
corner,
she
saw
Lee’s
watch
lying
right
in
the
middle
of
the
path.
Jessy
knew
she
should
just
pick
it
up
and
return
it
to
him,
but
she
didn’t
want
to
run
after
him.
Jessy
bent
down
quickly,
picked
up
the
watch
and
ran
home.
On
arriving
home,
Jessy
put
it
on
almost
without
thinking.
She
was
surprised
it
fitted
so
well.
She
walked
to
the
mirror
and
started
practicing
her
speech.
Words
just
flooded
out
of
her.
“I’m
going
to
talk
about
swimming.
I
have
been
lucky.
I’ve
won
lots
of
competitions.
But
when
I’m
in
a
race,
I’m
not
really
thinking
about
winning.
I’m
just
loving
the
feeling
of
being
in
the
water…”
Jessy
laughed
with
excitement.
She
walked
across
the
room.
She
suddenly
seemed
to
have
a
certain
sort
of
confidence.
Turning
back
to
the
mirror,
Jessy
saw
a
flash
of
light
from
the
watch
in
the
glass.
The
flashes
of
silver
seemed
almost
magical.
So
maybe
Lee’s
watch
really
DID
have
something
magic
about
it.
The
next
day,
as
the
lesson
began,
Miss
Bella
asked
who
was
going
to
be
brave
and
go
first.
Nobody
moved.
Jessy
slowly
raised
her
arm.
Before
Miss
Bella
could
say
anything,
there
was
a
shout
from
behind.
“She’s
stolen
my
watch!”
Lee
said
angrily,
“It
went
missing
at
school
yesterday.”

It
was
the
swim
season,
but
Elizabeth
didn’t
like
swim
meets.
She
got
horribly
nervous
but
not
because
she
wanted
to
win.
Her
nerves
came
from
the
possibility
that
she
would
do
something
horribly
wrong
and
let
everyone
down.
The
day
of
a
meet,
she
would
be
scared
all
day.
Recently,
Elizabeth’s
team
announced
a
special
swim
night:
Members
11
and
older
would
swim
a
timed
50
meters
in
all
four
strokes
and
then
have
pizza.
It
wasn’t
exactly
a
meet,
because
it
would
involve
only
team
members.
Elizabeth
countered
that
it
absolutely
was
a
meet
because
there
would
be
races
and
timers
and
so
on.
But
her
mother
really
wanted
her
to
go.
She
fought
back
furiously
but
finally
agreed.
When
the
day
of
the
special
swim
night
arrived,
Elizabeth
was
nervous.
When
she
got
to
the
pool
with
her
parents,
she
became
even
more
nervous.
Her
first
race
was
the
50-meter
freestyle.
She
swam
her
backstroke
and
breaststroke
without
incident.
It
wasn’t
fun
for
Elizabeth.
Her
butterflies
just
kept
flapping.
Then
it
was
time
for
the
T-shirt
relay,
which
works
like
this:
One
person
from
each
relay
team
puts
on
a
T-shirt,
a
pair
of
socks,
and
a
swim
cap;
swims
50
meters;
and
gets
out
of
the
pool.
She
takes
off
the
clothes
and
puts
them
on
the
next
person,
who
then
swims
50
meters.
This
continues
until
everyone
on
the
team
has
completed
a
lap.
For
some
unknown
reason,
Elizabeth’s
relay
team
chose
her
to
swim
the
anchor
leg(最后一棒).
The
team
dressed
her
in
socks
and
a
T-shirt.
And
then
she
was
off.
She
seemed
to
swim
faster
in
the
T-shirt
and
socks
than
she
did
when
she
wasn’t
wearing
them.
Approaching
the
halfway
mark,
she
was
still
in
the
lead.
Then
somebody
noticed
that
one
of
Elizabeth’s
socks
had
fallen
off
and
was
floating
in
the
pool.
“She
has
to
get
that
sock
on
before
the
end
of
the
race,”
a
swimming
official
told
Elizabeth’s
team,
“or
you
will
be
disqualified.”

had
grown
up
in
a
family
where
money
was
never
a
problem,
so
this
change
was
as
big
for
her
as
it
was
for
me.
My
constant
requests
for
toys
and
video
games
were
not
helping
my
mom,
who
was
already
a
widow,
deal
with
her
feelings
about
our
new
crisis-our
financial
situation.
But
I
wasn't
used
to
hearing
"no”.
So
for
a
year
or
two
I
kept
asking.
Then
something
happened
that
would
change
my
way
of
thinking
forever.
My
mom
had
been
working
hard
all
year,
just
to
pay
for
the
necessities,
like
our
water
and
power
bills.
When
she
asked
me
what
I
wanted
for
my
birthday,
I
said
I
wanted
a
new
video
gaming
system
.
I
didn't
know
it
was
expensive.
All
knew
was
that
my
friends
had
them
and
that
I
wanted
one,
too.

On
my
birthday
believing
that
I
would
get
what
I
wanted,
I
opened
the
gift.

From
then
on,
I
did't
expect
to
get
everything
that
I
asked
for.
