Paloma
sat
at
a
computer
in
the
school
library.
She
stared
at
the
blank
screen
and
the
blinking
cursor.
She
rummaged
around
in
her
backpack
for
a
rubber
band,
and
then
she
pulled
her
hair
into
a
thick
ponytail.
Paloma
looked
at
the
computer
screen.
It
was
still
blank.
She
sighed
and
flipped
through
her
notebook
to
reread
the
assignment
Mr.
Molina
had
given
the
class
three
weeks
ago.
It
was
due
in
just
two
days,
and
Paloma
knew
that
she
couldn’t
procrastinate
any
longer.
Write
a
creative
short
story
using
an
experience
that
you
have
had
recently,
Paloma
read.
Your
story
should
include
two
examples
of
figurative
language.
Paloma
and
her
family
had
recently
taken
a
trip
along
North
Carolina’s
coast.
They
had
visited
four
different
lighthouses,
and
Paloma
wondered
what
it
would
be
like
to
live
in
a
lighthouse.
She
knew
that
before
lighthouses
were
automated,
they
were
run
by
a
lighthouse
keeper
who
lived
on
the
premises.
Paloma
thought
she’d
love
to
be
a
lighthouse
keeper.
Without
thinking
about
it
any
longer,
Paloma
began
to
write
the
story.
I
sat
with
my
cat
Sadie
curled
on
my
lap
and
looked
out
the
window
at
the
crashing
waves.
The
heavy
rain
beat
against
my
lighthouse
like
a
thousand
footsteps
racing
up
and
down
the
walls.
I
held
Sadie
closer,
and
she
let
out
a
small
meow
of
displeasure.
I
knew
that
the
coming
storm
could
not
be
too
dangerous
if
Sadie
was
still
acting
normally.
I
had
read
that
animals
can
sense
changes
in
weather
and
will
seek
shelter
from
a
tornado
or
hurricane.
I
was
relying
on
Sadie’s
calmness
to
get
me
through
my
first
hurricane
on
the
island.
I
knew
that
my
lighthouse
was
sturdily
built.
It
had
survived
more
than
one
hundred
years’
worth
of
hurricanes
and
tropical
storms.
There
was
no
reason
to
believe
that
it
couldn’t
survive
another.
I
looked
up
at
the
staircase
that
spiraled
above
me
and
worried
as
I
felt
the
tower
sway
slightly
in
a
gust
of
wind.
Paloma
stopped
and
reread
what
she
had
just
written.
She
smiled
to
herself
in
delight,
saved
her
story,
and
then
settled
into
her
chair
to
continue
writing.
She
wasn’t
sure
what
was
going
to
happen
next,
but
she
knew
that
if
she
kept
going,
the
story
would
continue
to
tell
itself.
Paloma
couldn’t
wait
to
find
out
where
it
would
take
her.
24.
Why
is
Paloma
feeling
anxious
at
the
beginning
of
the
passage?
A.
She
hasn’t
much
time
left
to
do
her
writing
task.
B.
She
doesn’t
know
the
details
of
her
writing
task.
C.
She
has
completely
forgotten
about
her
writing
task.
D.
She
doesn’t
know
what
is
wrong
with
her
computer.
25.
What
is
the
inspiration
for
Paloma’s
story
idea?
A.
Her
cat.
B.
Her
teacher.
C.
Her
trip.
D.
Her
dream.
26.
In
Paloma’s
story,
how
does
the
lighthouse
keeper
decide
if
the
storm
is
dangerous?
A.
By
listening
to
the
weather
report.
B.
By
watching
the
crashing
waves.
C.
By
observing
the
cat’s
behaviour.
D.
By
measuring
the
movement
of
the
lighthouse.
27.
As
described
in
the
final
paragraph,
how
does
Paloma
feel
after
she
has
written
the
first
part
of
her
story?
A.
Confused.
B.
Excited.
C.
Relieved.
D.
Determined.

Pushy
parents
and
teachers
who
"hothouse"
the
under-5s
risk
causing
damage
to
the
children's
long-term
development,
a
leading
education
expert
said.
Lilian
Katz,
Professor
of
Education
at
the
University
of
Illinois,
told
that
four-year-olds
engaged
in
reading
and
writing
went
on
to
perform
worse
academically
than
those,
engaged
in
imaginative
learning.
They
scored
higher
in
tests
at
the
age
of
5,but
children
whose
first
year
at
school
was
stimulating(使人兴奋的)outstripped
them
years
later.
The
findings
suggest
that
the
government's
structured
approach
to
early-years
learning
could
be
storing
up
problems
for
children.
They
also
raise
serious
questions
about
the
plan
for
all
children
to
be
able
to
read
by
the
age
of
6.
In
many
countries
formal
teaching
does
not
start
until
children
are
6
or
7
and
have
improved
their
social
and
manual
skills.
Children
start
learning
to
read
and
write
at
6
in
the
United
States,
France
and
Germany,
and
at
7
Finland
and
Sweden.
Professor
Katz
said
that
in
many
schools
the
courses
were
“boring
children
to
tears”.
Much
academic
teaching
required
I
children
to
learn
by
memorizing
pieces
of
information
out
of
context,
she
said.
Teaching
in
reception
class
should
instead
allow
children
to
develop
their
intellect
by
exploring
their
environments
and
asking
questions.
"Research
suggests
the
benefits
of
formal
academic
instruction
for
four
and
five-year-olds
seem
to
be
promising
when
they
are
tested
early,
but
considerably
less
so
in
the
long
term.
When
these
children
arc
followed
over
a
period
of
three
or
more
years,
those
who
had
early
experience
in
more
intellectually
engaging
curricula
were
more
likely
to
do
well
in
school
than
their
peers,
who
had
received
early
academic
instruction.
"She
advocates
teaching
children
through
first-hand
experience
and
play,
in
mixed-aged
classes.
This
can
include
puppet
shows,
drawing
or
running
a
pretend
shop
in
the
classroom.
28.
According
to
the
passage,
those
who
"hothouse"
the
under-5s
would
probably______.
A.
prefer
a
lot
of
interaction
and
stimulation
while
teaching
B.
teach
in
a
lively
way
to
motivate
kids'
interest
C.
push
the
kids
to
memorize
pieces
of
information
D.
care
about
the
kids'
physical
development
29.
What
does
the
underlined
word
"outstripped"
in
Paragraph
2
mean?
A.
did
better
than
B.
looked
down
upon
C.
caught
up
with
D.
performed
worse
than
30.
The
message
the
author
wants
to
deliver
through
the
passage
is
that
formal
teaching______.
A.
can
start
at
different
times
in
different
countries
B.
should
not
be
started
too
early
C.
is
best
carried
out
in
Finland
and
Sweden
D.
should
include
teaching
children
social
and
manual
skills
31.
Which
of
the
following
is
NOT
the
opinion
of
Lilian
Katz?
A.
Children
should
be
taught
through
first-hand
experience.
B.
Learning
in
a
mixed-age
class
is
good
for
children.
C.
Running
a
shop
can
help
children
get
good
marks.
D.
Puppet
shows
and
drawing
are
useful
ways
in
teaching
children.
D
From
1990
to
2000,
fishermen
seeking
swordfish
off
the
coast
of
California
accidentally
caught
and
killed
over
100
sea
turtles,
and
injured
many
more.
In
2001,
the
federal
government
established
the
Pacific
Leatherback
Conservation
Area
(PLCA),
a
region
off
the
coast
of
California
where
fishing
boats
aren’t
allowed
to
enter
from
August
through
November.
Since
then,
the
number
of
turtles
killed
by
mistake
has
fallen
rapidly,
but
a
handful
of
animals
still
die
from
being
caught
in
fishing
nets
each
year.
And
meanwhile,
the
once
$15
million
swordfish
industry
has
become
a
$2
million
industry.
Scientists
are
hoping
to
find
a
way
to
both
protect
sea
turtles
and
other
endangered
creatures
and
help
fishermen
make
a
living.
For
this,
many
are
looking
at
dynamic
(动态的)
ocean
management
to
help
fishing
boats
meet
fish
where
they
are
and
avoid
catching
other
fish
by
mistake.
The
first
paper
to
suggest
that
the
fish
that
live
in
the
open
ocean
should
be
guarded
with
fluid,
ever-changing
zones
of
protection,
came
out
in
2000.
Larry
Crowder,
a
professor
at
Hopkins
Marine
Station,
remembers
reading
it
and
thinking,“
Cool
idea,
but
it
will
never
work.”
In
2000,
scientists
didn’t
have
the
computer
power
to
cheaply
test
statistical
models
or
deal
with
satellite
data
quickly.
They
didn’t
have
enough
data
dealing
with
fish
or
satellite
data
on
ocean
conditions,
either.
Now
scientists
can
download
oceans
of
satellite
data
in
minutes,
and
attach
satellite
archival
tags
(档案标签)
to
marine
(海洋的)
animals
to
track
their
movements.
They
first
collect
data
by
marking
the
creatures,
collecting
reports
from
fishing
boats,
or
other
tracking
methods.
Then
they
compare
that
data
with
weather
conditions,
the
time
of
year,
and
any
other
data
that
can
be
sensed.
Finally,
they
can
forecast
where
fish
are
likely
to
be.
Crowder
and
his
colleagues
used
the
data
to
develop
a
tool
called
EcoCast,
which
shows
fishermen
a
daily
map
where
there
are
more
fish
they
desire.
According
to
statistical
modeling,
if
fishers
had
used
EcoCast
during
the
2012
and
2015
fishing
seasons,
they
could
have
fished
in
at
least
125,000
more
square
miles
than
were
open
to
them,
without
significant
risk
of
hurting
turtles.
32.
The
federal
government
hopes
the
PLCA
and
its
rules
can_________.
A.
protect
the
creatures
in
the
area
to
some
degree
B.
help
collect
data
for
future
researches
C.
prevent
fishing
in
the
PLCA
D.
make
the
public
realize
the
importance
of
our
environment
33.

Larry
Crowder
think

dynamic
ocean
management
at

It
was
unrealistic.
D.
It
was

mainly
tell
us?
A.
An
effective
way
to
collect
data.
B.
Some
fruits
in
the
related
technology.
C.
A
scientific

In
