Great
minds
语法选择。
In
ancient
Greece,
Socrates
was
the
great
philosopher.
He
was
1
known
for
his
wisdom.
One
day
the
great
philosopher
met
a
man
2
ran
up
to
him
excitedly
and
said,
“Socrates,
Socrates!
I
3
tell
you
something!
You
will
not
believe
what
I
just
heard
about
one
of
your
students!”
“Wait
a
moment,”
Socrates
replied.

4
you
tell
me,
I’d
like
you
5
a
little
test.
It
6
the
Test
of
Three.”
“Test
of
Three?”
“That’s
correct,”
Socrates
continued.
“The
first
test
is
the
test
of
7
.
Are
you
sure
that
what
you
are
about
to
tell
me
is
true?”
“No,”
the
man
replied,
“actually
I
just
heard
about
it.”
“All
right,
so
you
don’t
really
know
8
it’s
true
or
not,”
said
Socrates.
“Now
let’s
try
9
test,
the
test
of
Goodness.
Is
what
you
are
about
to
tell
me
about
my
student
something
good?”
“No,
on
the
contrary…”
“So,”
Socrates
continued,
“you
want
to
tell
me
10
about
him
even
though
you’re
not
sure
it’s
true?”
The
man
shrugged(耸肩),
a
little
embarrassed.
“The
third
test—the
filter(过滤)of
usefulness,”
Socrates
continued.
“Is
what
you
want
to
tell
me
11
my
student
going
to
be
useful
to
me?”
“No,
not
really...”
“Well,”
Socrates
said
with
12
smile,
“if
what
you
want
to
tell
me
is
13
true,
nor
good,
nor
even
useful,
why
do
you
want
to
tell
me?
Just
14
it
and
don’t
bother
me
with
it
any
more.”
The
man
was
15
and
said
nothing.

Zhang
Guimei,
the
headmaster
of
Huaping
High
School
for
Girls,
based
in
Lijiang
City,
Southwest
China’s
Yunnan
Province,
has
been
granted(授予)the
title
“Role
Model
of
the
Times”
for
what
she
has
done
for
girls
from
poor
families.
The
school,
which
was
founded
by
Zhang
in
2008,
was
the
first
high
school
in
the
country
to
provide
free
education
to
girls
who
would
otherwise
have
been
unable
to
continue
their
studies
after
completing
their
nine
years
of
compulsory
education.
Anybody
who
knows
Zhang’s
own
conditions
will
be
more
deeply
moved
by
her.
She
has
no
personal
property(财产),
and
has
been
living
in
the
student
dormitory
since
its
founding.
She
has
spent
most
of
her
own
money
on
her
students.
Despite
having
serious
health
problems,
for
12
years
she
has
always
taken
morning
classes
together
with
the
students.
She
has
also
racked
up(累计)110,000
kilometres
visiting
her
students’
families
over
the
years.
Besides
her
work
with
the
school,
she
also
has
a
part-time
job
as
head
of
the
local
orphanage(孤儿院),
caring
for
more
than
130
orphans.
Thanks
to
her
efforts,
about
40
percent
of
the
school’s
graduates(毕业生)are
admitted
into
key
universities.
More
than
1,800
girls
from
poor
families
have
entered
universities
via
her
education.
By
helping
the
girls
get
higher
education,
she
has
actually
helped
them
change
their
lives.
In
a
broader
sense,
Zhang
has
been
helping
to
improve
the
region(地区)as
a
whole.
Influenced
by
her,
many
of
her
students
have
chosen
to
teach
in
poor
areas,
while
some
even
went
back
to
teach
in
her
high
school.
Her
efforts
have
thus
benefited(受益)the
local
region
in
a
sustainable
way.
Now,
with
Zhang
having
got
the
title,
education
for
girls
from
poor
regions
will
receive
more
attention,
which
hopefully
brings
more
resources
and
assistance(援助).
What
she
has
done
will
be
long
remembered
and
encourage
more
to
follow
her
example.

B
Many
children
may
be
fond
of
animals,
but
few
ever
think
of
making
the
study
of
animals
as
their
career.
Even
fewer
will
be
recognized
by
the
whole
world,
receiving
the
title
“United
Nations
Messenger(使者)of
Peace”.
But
one
woman
has
achieved
all
that.
She
has
lived
with
chimpanzees(黑猩猩)in
the
African
forest
for
more
than
20
years
and
made
great
discoveries.
It
is
Jane
Goodall
who
was
born
on
April
3,
1934
in
London,
England,
and
grew
up
in
Bournemouth
on
the
southern
coast
of
England.
Jane
Goodall’s
lifelong
interest
in
animals
began
at
an
early
age.
By
the
age
of
10
or
11,
Goodall
dreamed
of
going
to
Africa
to
live
with
animals.
This
was
quite
a
strange
dream
in
those
days,
as
young
girls
didn’t
think
of
having
such
“wild”
actions.
But
she
was
encouraged
by
her
mother.
She
told
her
that
if
she
really
wanted
something,
she
should
work
hard,
take
advantage
of
chances
and
never
give
up
looking
for
a
way.
When
a
close
friend
invited
Goodall
to
Kenya
in
1957,
she
readily
accepted
it.
Within
a
few
months
of
her
arrival,
she
met
the
famous
anthropologist(人类学家)Dr.
Louis
Leakey,
who
soon
decided
that
Goodall
was
the
special
person
he
was
looking
for
to
begin
a
study
of
wild
chimpanzees
on
the
shore
of
Lake
Tanganyika
in
Tanzania.
At
the
beginning,
studying
the
chimpanzees
was
not
easy
for
her.
The
animals
ran
away
from
her
in
fear.
With
a
strong
will,
she
searched
the
forest
every
day,
trying
not
to
get
too
close
to
the
chimpanzees
too
soon.
Gradually
the
chimpanzees
became
used
to
her
presence(存在;在场).
In
October
1960,
she
observed
a
chimpanzee
making
and
using
tools
to
fish
for
termites(白蚁).
This
discovery
threw
doubt
on
the
popular
idea
at
the
time
that
man
was
the
world’s
only
toolmaker.
The
longer
Goodall’s
research
continues,
the
more
it
becomes
clear
that
chimpanzees
are
very
similar
to
humans.
Since
the
mid-1980s,
Goodall
has
been
lecturing
around
the
world
to
raise
people’s
sense
about
environmental
protection.
“Let’s
live
in
the
new
age
with
hope,
respect
for
all
living
things,
understanding
and
love,”
she
said.

Noah
Webster
was
born
on
October
16,
1758,
in
the
West
Division
of
Hartford.
At
that
time,
few
people
went
to
college,
but
Noah
loved
to
learn
so
his
parents
let
him
go
to
Yale,
Connecticut’s
only
college.
He
left
for
New
Haven
in
1774.
Noah’s
years
at
Yale
were
the
years
of
the
Revolutionary
War.
Sometimes
70
children
of
all
ages
were
in
a
one-room
schoolhouse
with
no
desks,
poor
books,
and
untrained
teachers.
1
Their
books
came
from
England.
Noah
thought
that
Americans
should
learn
from
American
books,
so
in
1783,
Noah
wrote
his
own
textbook
A
Grammatical
Institute
or
the
English
Language.
For
100
years,
Noah’s
book
taught
children
how
to
read,
spell
and
pronounce
words.
2
Ben
Franklin
used
Noah’s
book
to
teach
his
granddaughter
to
read.
3
He
did
this
because
Americans
in
different
parts
of
the
country
spelled,
pronounced
and
used
words
differently.
He
thought
that
all
Americans
should
speak
the
same
way.
He
also
thought
that
Americans
should
not
speak
and
spell
just
like
the
English.
Noah
used
American
spellings
like
“color”
instead
of
the
English
“colour”,
“music”
instead
of
“musick”
and
“centre”
