Guy
Fawkes
Day,
also
known
as
"Bonfire
Night"(篝火之夜)
or
"Fireworks
Night"
by
some,
marks
the
date,
November
5,
1605,
when
Guy
Fawkes
and
his
fellows
attempted
to
kill
King
James
I
and
the
members
of
Parliament
and
to
blow
up
the
House
of
Parliament(国会大厦).
Guy
Fawkes
was
born
in
1570;
he
had
spent
several
years
fighting
in
Italy.
In
London,
bonfires
were
lit
to
celebrate
the
discovery
of
the
plan
soon
after
Fawkes
was
discovered
and
the
next
year
Parliament
agreed
to
make
5th
November
a
day
of
public
thanksgiving
and
ever
since
then
the
day
has
been
celebrated
with
fireworks
and
bonfires.
Today
children
still
make
stuffed(填塞的)
figures
with
masks
as
pictures
of
Guy
Fawkes.
They
call
these
figures
guys
and
display
them
in
the
streets.
Some
even
use
the
traditional
formula
of
"A
penny
for
the
guy"
when
asking
passers-by
for
money
to
buy
fireworks.
The
guy
then
becomes
the
centre-piece
of
bonfires
on
the
night
of
November
5
when
fireworks
light
up
the
sky
over
most
of
Britain.
Many
people
hold
bonfire
parties
and
barbecues
even
though
it
is
usually
really
cold,
and
invite
their
friends
to
gather
around
the
fire
with
them.
However,
because
of
the
rising
number
of
accidents
that
occur
every
year
many
communities
hold
professionally
or
organized
public
displays.
Some
of
the
venues
for
these
public
bonfires
are
in
parks,
fields,
and
on
hills.
New
laws
were
introduced
to
control
the
use
of
Fireworks
in
2004.
They
include:
It
is
an
offence(违法行为)
for
any
person
under
the
age
of
18
to
possess
fireworks
in
a
public
place.
It
is
an
offence
to
use
fireworks
between
11
p.
m.
and
7
a.m.
except
November
5th.
It
is
also
an
offence
for
any
person
to
throw,
cast
or
fire
any
firework
into
any
public
place.

Boxing
day
is
on
December
26th,
the
day
after
Christmas,
and
is
celebrated
in
Great
Britain
and
in
most
areas
settled
by
the
British
except
for
the
United
States
of
America,
including
Canada,
Australia,
and
New
Zealand.
Despite(尽管)
its
name,
Boxing
Day
has
nothing
to
do
with
competition
sports.
While
the
exact
origins
of
the
holiday
are
unclear,
it
is
likely
that
Boxing
Day
began
in
England
during
the
Middle
Ages.
Some
historians
say
the
holiday
developed
because
servants(仆人)
were
asked
to
work
on
Christmas
Day,
but
took
the
following
day
off.
As
servants
prepared
to
leave
to
visit
their
families,
their
employers
would
present
them
with
gift
boxes.
Another
theory
is
that
centuries
ago,
on
the
day
after
Christmas,
members
of
the
merchant(商人)
class
would
give
boxes
containing
food
and
fruit,
clothing
and
money
to
businessmen
and
servants.
The
gifts
were
an
expression
of
thankfulness,
much
like
today
when
people
receive
bonuses(奖金)
from
their
employers
because
of
a
well-done
job.
These
gifts,
given
in
boxes,
gave
the
holiday
its
name,
"Boxing
Day".
Traditionally,
Boxing
Day
is
a
day
when
families
get
together.
It
is
a
day
of
watching
sports
games
with
family.
In
the
past,
hunting
was
one
of
the
favourite
activities
on
this
day.
People
usually
went
hunting
for
wrens
or
foxes.
Today,
Boxing
Day
is
spent
with
family
and
friends
with
lots
of
food
and
sharing
of
friendship
and
love.
Government
buildings
and
small
businesses
are
closed
but
the
malls
are
open.
Shopping
is
a
popular
Boxing
Day
activity,
and
the
malls
are
usually
filled
with
bargains.
Besides
these
activities,
many
businesses,
organizations
and
families
try
to
keep
the
traditional
spirit
of
Boxing
Day
alive
by
donating
their
time,
services
and
money
to
aid
Food
Banks,
providing
gifts
for
the
poor,
or
helping
an
individual
family
that
is
in
need.
Boxing
Day
has
mainly
become
an
extension
of
the
Christmas
holiday,
giving
working
families
one
more
day
as
the
happy
time
of
a
year.

visit
their
families
D.were
given
empty
boxes
by
employers
2.Members
of
the
merchant
class
gave
gift
boxes
to
businessmen
and
servants
to
________.
A.show
care
and
kindness
to
them
B.thank
them
for
doing
a
good
job
C.provide
them
with
enough
money
D.pass
on
the
traditional
love
and
spirit
3.What
does
the
third
paragraph
mainly
discuss
A.The
beginning
of
Boxing
Day.
B.The
hunting
on
Boxing
Day.
C.The
good
spirit
of
Boxing
Day.
D.The
activities
on
Boxing
Day.
4.Why
is
shopping
popular
on
Boxing
Day
A.Because
it
is
a
kind
of
traditional
activity.
B.Because
only
malls
are
open
on
that
day.
C.Because
things
can
be
bought
at
a
low
price.
D.Because
people
buy
things

The
Sister
Rice
Festival
is
held
every
year
in
Guizhou's
Taijiang
County,
where
97
percent
of
the
168,000
people
are
from
the
ethnic(民族的)
Miao
group.
It
is
an
ancient
tradition,
which
brings
men
and
women
together
through
food,
gifts
and
music.
In
the
days
before
the
festival,
young
women
gather
leaves
and
wild
flowers,
which
they
use
to
dye(给……染色)
sticky
rice
with
bright
colors.
This
brightly
colored
rice,
known
as
Sister
Rice,
gives
the
festival
its
name.
During
the
festival,
the
young
women
dress
in
beautiful
traditional
clothes
with
large
amounts
of
silver
jewelry(首饰).
The
festival
includes
parades,
horse
races;
and
musical
performances.
But
the
real
focus
is
the
interaction(互动)
between
the
young
women
and
the
young
men
who
visit
from
surrounding
villages
land
sing
songs.
In
one
traditional
type
of
song,
a
man
and
a
woman
take
turns
singing
to
each
other,
and
the
first
one
to
make
a
mistake
loses
the
game.
The
loser
must
give
the
winner
a
gift,
but
the
winner
is
expected
to
give
a
gift
in
return
too.
After
meeting
the
men,
the
women
send
them
home
with
a
bamboo
basket
containing
dyed
rice
and
hidden
objects
with
special
meanings.
For
example,
a
pair
of
chopsticks
means
she
wants
to
marry
the
man,
while
garlic
shows
that
she
is
not
interested.
One
of
several
stories
about
the
festival's
beginning
is
about
a
girl
and
a
boy
who
fell
in
love.
The
girl's
parents
wanted
her
to
marry
her
uncle's
son.
She
refused,
and
the
boy
likewise
refused
to
marry
anyone
else.
For
a
time,
they
could
only
meet
in
a
field
and
pass
hidden
messages
to
each
other
through
rice
in
a
bamboo
basket.
Finally,
the
pair
overcame
their
parents'
opposition
and
were
allowed
to
marry.
The
Sister
Rice
Festival
is
perhaps
the
oldest
festival
in
Asia
that
encourages
love.

4.
The
idea
of
billions
of
people
going
through
a
few
masks
a
week
during
this
pandemic
definitely
rings
alarm
bells,
but
a
team
of
researchers
in
Melbourne
may
have
the
solution.
They’ve
discovered
that
adding
millions
of
discarded
face
masks
to
road-paving
(铺路)
mixtures
would
actually
lower
the
cost
of
the
road,
while
preventing
billions
of
them
from
landfills.
Just
one
kilometer
of
road
would
need
three
million
masks,
and
the
polypropylene
(聚丙烯)
plastic
used
to
make
single-use
surgical
face
masks
also
increased
the
flexibility
and
durability
of
the
road.
The
new
material
is
a
mixture
of
about
2%
torn
masks,
with
recycled
concrete
aggregate
(RCA)—a
material
obtained
from
waste
concrete
and
other
minerals
from
destroyed
buildings.
This
recycled
material
was
found
in
the
study
to
be
ideal
for
two
of
the
four
layers
generally
required
to
create
roadways.
Paving
a
kilometer
of
two-way
road
with
the
RCA
and
three
million
face
masks
would
result
in
a
change
of
93
tons
of
waste
from
landfills.
The
final
product
then
is
more
resistant
to
wear
than
asphalt
(沥青),
as
well
as
being
cheaper
too,
provided
there
was
a
method
for
collecting
masks.
The
research
team
did
a
cost-analysis
and
found
that,
at
$26
per
ton,
the
RCA
was
about
half
the
cost
of
mining
raw
materials,
and
as
much
as
a
third
of
the
cost
of
shipping
the
used
masks
to
a
landfill.
The
widespread
application
would
be
ideal
for
large
infrastructure
(基础设施)
projects.
For
example,
Washington
has
the
11th
worst
roads
in
terms
of
unaddressed
repairs
in
the
U.S.
If
the
damaged
roads
in
Washington
state
were
repaired
with
the
RCA/mask
mixture,
it
would
reuse
nearly
10
billion
masks,
sparing
American
landfills
hundreds
of
millions
of
tons
of
trash.
It’s
said
that
the
team
is
looking
for
private
industry
partners
or
governments
willing
to
give
their
plastic
mask
road
an
opportunity
for
a
large-scale
test.
1.What

D.Abandoned.
2.What
is
the
new
material
used
to
pave
ways
made
of
A.2%
torn
masks,
concrete
and
tons
of
trash.
B.Polypropylene
plastic
and
building
materials.
C.Single-use
surgical
masks
and
recycled
concrete
aggregate.
D.Waste
concrete
and
other
minerals
from
destroyed
buildings.
3.Why
are
numbers
mentioned
in
paragraph
5
A.To
tell
us
what
the
team
has
found.
B.To
prove
this
material
is
cost-effective
in
paving
roads.
C.To
explain
repairing
roads
costs
a
lot
of
materials.
D.To
praise
the
hard
work
the

has
done.
4.What
can
we
learn
from
the
text
A.The
material
used
to
pave
roads
is
made
of
masks.
B.Generally
speaking,
it
requires
two
layers
to
create
roadways.
C.It
remains
to
be
tested
whether
the

is
practical.

The
Double
Seventh
Festival
is
a
traditional
Chinese
festival.
It
has
a
longer
history
than
the
1
of
Valentine's
Day
in
the
West.
The
origin
of
this
festival
is
related
to
a
cowboy
and
a
weaving
girl,
whose
love
story
has
become
a
part
of
the
Chinese
culture.
Even
if
there
are
many
different
versions
of
the
story,
the
most
popular
one
begins
with
a
poor
cowboy.
Living
with
his
elder
and
2
brother,
who
treated
him
badly,
the
cowboy
looked
after
an
old
cow
every
day.
Though
life
was
tough
and
boring,
he
3
it
in
silence,
without
complaining.
4
,
even
such
a
hard
life
didn't
last
long.
His
brother
got
rid
of
him
and
all
he
got
was
the
old
cow.
Although
they
couldn't
talk
to
each
other,
they
5
on
each
other
for
company.
One
day,
a
miracle
happened.
The
old
cow
started
talking
and
told
him
that
there
would
be
seven
fairies
coming
down
to
the
Earth
to
6
in
a
pond.
All
he
should
do
was
to
7
the
dress
of
one
of
the
fairies.
Then
that
fairy
would
be
his
wife.
8
but
excited,
the
cowboy
followed
the
cow's
advice.
Every
day,
the
cowboy
went
to
work
while
the
fairy
wove
cloth
at
home.
However,
their
9
life
came
to
an
end
when
the
Heavenly
Goddess
learned
about
it.
She
took
the
weaving
girl
away
and
drew
a
line
in
the
10
that
turned
into
the
Milky
Way,
which
11
the
cowboy
meeting
his
wife.
Due
to
the
strong
reaction
from
the
young
12
,
the
Goddess
finally
allowed
them
to
see
each
other
only
once
a
year.
The
day
was
on
the
seventh
day
of
the
seventh
month.
That
is
how
the
Double
Seventh
Festival
came
into
being.
Although
the
love
story
doesn't
end
up
with
a
happy
ending,
it
is
to
be
told
from
one
13
to
another.
It
reminds
people
to
cherish
every
moment
14
with
their
loved
ones
and
not
to
regret
until
we
15
them.

9.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
There
was
a
rich
couple
who
was
throwing
a
big
New
Year
party
at
their
house.
So
they
went
shopping
at
the
market
where
everything
was
of
high
cost
and
at
a
fixed
price.
They
wanted
to
maintain
their
level
of
standard
so
they
didn't
mind
paying
for
it.
After
purchasing
all
they
needed,
they
called
a
porter
to
carry
everything
and
drop
it
at
their
home.
The
porter
who
came
was
of
an
old
age,
and
looked
very
unhealthy,
and
his
clothes
were
tom,
and
he
looked
as
if
he
wasn’t
even
able
to
meet
his
daily
needs.
They
asked
the
porter
about
the
charges
for
delivering
their
goods
to
their
home.
The
old
porter
quoted
just
$20,
well
below
the
market
price.
Yet,
the
couple
argued
and
bargained
with
the
porter
and
finally
settled
for
$15.
The
porter
was
struggling
to
make
even
one
time's
meal
so
he
needed
anything
he
could
earn.
The
couple
was
very
happy
thinking
how
well
they
bargained
with
the
poor
porter
and
paid
him
$15
in
advance
and
left
after
giving
the
porter
their
address
for
delivery.
They
reached
their
home
and
one
hour
passed,
and
two
hours
passed,
but
the
porter
still
didn’t
deliver
their
stuff.
The
wife
started
to
get
angry
at
her
husband,
"I
always
tell
you
not
to
trust
such
person,
but
you
never
listen
to
me.
I
am
sure
instead
of
delivering
the
goods
to
our
home,
he
must
have
disappeared
with
everything.
We
must
immediately
go
back
to
the
market
to
inquire
and
then
to
the
police
station
to
file
the
complaint
against
him."
They
both
left
towards
the
market.
On
their
way
near
the
market,
they
saw
another
porter.
They
stopped
him
to
inquire
about
the
old
porter
and
noticed
that
he
was
carrying
their
goods
in
his
cart!
The
angry
wife
asked
him,
"Where
is
that
old
thief
These
are
our
goods
and
he
was
supposed
to
deliver
them.
It
seems
you
poor
thieves
are
stealing
our
goods
and
going
to
sell
them."
注意:续写词数应为150左右。

答案以及解析
1.答案:1-3.BDA
解析:语篇解读:本文介绍了英国的传统节日盖伊·福克斯节的来历和人们怎样庆祝等信息。
1.解析:细节理解题。结合第一段和第二段可知,在1606年,英国国会同意11月5日为公众感恩日。
2.解析:推理判断题。根据第二段中的"...bonfires
were
lit
to
celebrate
the
discovery
of
the
plan
soon
after
Fawkes
was
discovered..."可知。
3.解析:细节理解题。从第三段中的"...for
money
to
buy
fireworks."可知孩子们要来的钱都花在购买烟花上。
2.答案:1-4.CBDC
解析:语篇解读:本文是说明文,介绍了英国12月26日这一天为"Boxing
Day"。
1.解析:细节理解题。由第二段第三、四句可知,仆人在圣诞节这一天要工作,而第二天(Boxing
Day)可以休假去探望亲人。故C项正确。
2.解析:细节理解题。由第二段倒数第二句可知,商队成员在"Boxing
Day"送给商人和仆人礼物是为了感谢他们出色的工作。
3.解析:段落大意题。第三段主要谈论的是在Boxing
Day人们从事的种种活动。
4.解析:细节理解题。由第三段第七句可知,
Boxing
Day
那天商场出售打折商品。故C项正确。
3.答案:1-4
CABD
解析:1.细节理解题。根据第二段中的In
the
days
before
the
festival,
young
women
gather
leaves
and
wild
flowers,
which
they
use
to
dye(给……染色)
sticky
rice
with
bright
colors.可知年轻的女子收集叶子和野花的目的就是给糯米染不同的颜色。
2.细节理解题。根据第三段中的The
festival
includes
parades(游行),
horse
races
and
musical
performances.可知,
water
skiing(滑水)不在此节日的活动中。
3.推理判断题。根据第四段After
meeting
the
men...not
interested.可以推断在本文中一双筷子暗示好事。
4.段落大意题。第五段主要讲苗族姊妹节的起源故事——一个女孩和一个男孩坠入了爱河。根据文中For
a
time,
they
could
only
meet
in
a
field
and
pass
hidden
messages
to
each
other
through
rice
in
a
bamboo
basket.可知,本段的故事告诉我们竹篮里的米承载着他们的爱。
4.答案:1.D;
2.C;
3.B;
4.C
解析:1.词义猜测题。根据划线词所在的句子“They’ve
discovered
that
adding
millions
of
face
masks
to
road-paving
(铺路)
mixtures
would
actually
lower
the
cost
of
the
road,
while
preventing
billions
of
them
from
landfills.”可知,他们发现,将数百万个口罩添加到铺路混合料中,实际上可以降低道路成本,同时防止数十亿个口罩被填埋。根据第一段的“The
idea
of
billions
of
people
going
through
a
few
masks
a
week
during
this
pandemic
definitely
rings
alarm
bells,
but
a
team
of
researchers
in
Melbourne
may
have
the
solution.”可知,疫情大流行期间每周有数十亿人戴着口罩的想法肯定会敲响警钟,但墨尔本的一组研究人员可能有解决方案。将上下文结合起来可知,解决方案是将人们用过的废弃口罩添加到铺路的混合材料中去。由此可知,划线单词意为“被遗弃的”。故选D。
2.细节理解题。根据第二段的“Just
one
kilometer
of
road
would
need
three
million
masks,
and
the
polypropylene
(聚丙烯)
plastic
used
to
make
single-use
surgical
face
masks
also
increased
the
flexibility
and
durability
of
the
road.
”可知,仅一公里的道路就需要300万个口罩,而用于制造一次性手术口罩的聚丙烯塑料也提高了道路的柔韧性和耐用性。再根据第三段的“The
new
material
is
a
mixture
of
about
2%
torn
masks,
with
recycled
concrete
aggregate
(RCA)—a
material
obtained
from
waste
concrete
and
other
minerals
from
destroyed
buildings.”可知,这种新材料是约2%破损口罩与再生混凝土骨料(RCA)的混合物,后者是从废弃混凝土和被毁建筑物中的其他矿物中获得的。由此可知,铺路用的新材料是一次性使用口罩和再生混凝土骨料组成的。故选C。
3.推理判断题。根据第五段的“For
example,
Washington
has
the
11th
worst
roads
in
terms
of
unaddressed
repairs
in
the
U.S.
If
the
damaged
roads
in
Washington
state
were
repaired
with
the
RCA/mask
mixture,
it
would
reuse
nearly
10
billion
masks,
sparing
American
landfills
hundreds
of
millions
of
tons
of
trash.”可知,例如,就美国未解决的维修而言,华盛顿的道路是美国第11糟糕的。如果使用再生混凝土骨料(RCA)和口罩的混合物来修复华盛顿州受损的道路,它将重复使用近100亿个口罩,从而使美国的垃圾掩埋场减少数亿吨的垃圾填埋。由此可知,第5段中提到的数字是为证明这种材料在铺路时具有成本效益。故选B。
4.推理判断题。根据最后一段的“It’s
said
that
the
team
is
looking
for
private
industry
partners
or
governments
willing
to
give
their
plastic
mask
road
an
opportunity
for
a
large-scale
test.”可知,据说,该团队正在寻找愿意为其塑料口罩道路提供大规模测试机会的私营行业合作伙伴或政府。由此可知,该解决方案是否可行还有待测试。故选C。
5.答案:EDGCA
解析:语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文,介绍了母亲节和父亲节。

7.答案:①opinions
②eating/to
eat
③it
④loss
⑤to
embrace
⑥retired
⑦a
⑧on
⑨preparing
⑩when
解析:①考查名词单复数。opinion是可数名词,
在设空前有different修饰,
需用复数形式,
故填opinions。
②考查非谓语动词。prefer
doing/to
do
sth.更愿意做某事,
故填eating/to
eat。
③考查it用法。分析句子结构可知,
空后的is缺主语,
而真正的主语是to
spend
so
much
time
preparing
for
a
single
meal,
此处要用形式主语it,
故填it。
④考查名词。空前是介词with,
设空后是介词of,
所以这里只能填名词,
lose的名词形式是loss,
故填loss。
⑤考查不定式。advise
sb.
to
do
sth.建议某人做某事,
故填to
embrace。
⑥考查非谓语动词。设空前是不定冠词a,
设空后是名词,
所以这里只能填形容词形式retired作定语,
故填retired。
⑦考查冠词。设空后是名词词组little
boy,
boy是单数名词,
此处表泛指,
故填a。
⑧考查介词。表示在具体某一天的晚上,
要用介词on。
⑨考查动词-ing形式。设空前是介词of,
所以用动词-ing形式作介词的宾语,
故填preparing。
⑩考查定语从句。分析句子结构,
表示时间的名词短语the
moment是先行词,
关系词在从句中作时间状语,
故填when。

and
I
have
10
percent
of
the
books
I
once
did.
I
have
come
a
long
way
from
the
life
I
had
in
the
late
90’s,
when,
having
made
a
fortune
from
an
Internet
start-up
sale,
I
had
a
giant
house
full
of
stuff
—
electronics
and
cars
and
appliances
and
furniture.
Somehow
this
stuff
ended
up
running
my
life,
or
a
lot
of
it;
the
things
I
consumed
ended
up
consuming
me.
My
life
became
unnecessarily
complicated.
There
were
lawns
to
mow,
floors
to
mop,
a
car
to
insure,
wash,
refuel,
repair
and
register
and
tech
to
set
up
and
keep
working.
Who
had
I
become
My
house
and
my
things
were
my
new
employers
for
a
job
I
had
never
applied
for.
I
started
to
wonder
why
my
theoretically
upgraded
life
didn’t
feel
any
better
and
why
I
felt
more
anxious
than
before.
For
me,
it
took
15
years
to
get
rid
of
the
things
I
had
collected
and
live
a
bigger,
better,
richer
life
with
less.
I
like
material
things
as
much
as
anyone.
I
studied
product
design
in
school.
But
my
experiences
show
that
after
a
certain
point,
material
objects
have
a
tendency
to
crowd
out
the
emotional
needs
they
are
meant
to
support
.I
know
the
best
stuff
in
life
isn’t
stuff
at
all,
and
that
relationships,
experiences
and
meaningful
work
are
the
main
parts
of
a
happy
life.
My
latest
project
is
to
design
thoughtfully
constructed
small
homes
that
support
our
lives,
not
the
other
way
around.
The

makes
it
easier
for
owners
to
live
within
their
means
and
to
limit
their
environmental
footprint.
My
space

well-built
affordable
and

functional
as

than
I
need.
I

more.
My
space
is
small.
My
life
is
big.

If
you
are
a
fruit
grower—or
would
like
to
become
one—take
advantage
of
Apple
Day
to
see
what's
around.
It's
called
Apple
Day
but
in
fact
it's
more
like
Apple
Month.
The
day
itself
is
on
October
21,
but
since
it
has
caught
on,
events
now
spread
out
over
most
of
October
around
Britain.
Visiting
an
apple
event
is
a
good
chance
to
see,
and
often
taste,
a
wide
variety
of
apples.
To
people
are
used
to
the
limited
kinds
of
apples
such
as
Golden
Delicious
and
Royal
Gala
in
supermarkets,
it
can
be
quite
an
eye
opener
to
see
the
range
of
classical
apples
still
in
existence,
such
as
Decio
which
was
grown
by
the
Romans.
Although
it
doesn't
taste
of
anything
special,
it's
still
worth
a
try,
as
is
the
knobbly(多疙瘩的)
Cat's
Head
which
is
more
of
a
curiosity
than
anything
else.
There
are
also
varieties
developed
to
suit
specific
local
conditions.
One
of
the
very
best
varieties
for
eating
quality
is
Orleans
Reinette,
but
you'll
need
a
warm,
sheltered
place
with
perfect
soil
to
grow
it,
so
it's
a
pipe
dream
for
most
apple
lovers
who
fall
for
it.
At
the
events,
you
can
meet
expert
growers
and
discuss
which
ones
will
best
suit
your
conditions,
and
because
these
are
family
affairs,
children
are
well
catered
for
with
apple-themed
fun
and
games.
Apple
Days
are
being
held
at
all
sorts
of
places
with
an
interest
in
fruit,
including
stately
gardens
and
commercial
orchards
(果园).
If
you
want
to
have
a
real
orchard
experience,
try
visiting
the
National
Fruit
Collection
at
Brogdale,
near
Faversham
in
Kent.

Ways
to
Have
a
Joyful
Chinese
New
Year
In
many
cultures,
January
1st
marks
the
beginning
of
a
new
year. ①_____
It
is
one
of
the
most
important
occasions
for
family
reunions.
According
to
the
lunar
calendar,
the
Year
of
the
Rat—the
first
of
the
12
Chinese
zodiac(黄道十二宫图)
symbols—begins
on
January
25th,
2020.
Usually,
the
Chinese
New
Year
celebration
lasts
for
three
weeks,
starting
from
the
23rd
day
of
the
previous
year's
12th
month
of
the
lunar
calendar
until
the
15th
day
of
the
new
year.
Here
are
some
centuries-old
traditions
shared
by
the
Chinese
community
in
order
to
promote
blessings
of
health
and
wealth
in
the
new
year.
Spring
cleaning. ②_____
It
is
widely
believed
that
a
freshly
cleaned
house
will
bring
good
luck
to
people.
③_____ People
will
make
red
paper-cuttings,
Chinese
characters
or
red
lanterns
that
mean
luck,
happiness
and
blessings,
and
stick
them
onto
doors
and
windows.
Setting
off
firecrackers.
In
fairy
tales,
people
managed
to
scare
away(吓跑)
a
monster
named
Year
by
setting
off
fireworks.
④_____
Lucky
money.
Seniors
give
kids
lucky
money
in
red
envelopes,
in
the
hope
of
making
their
future
much
brighter.
Eating
dumplings.
The
shape
of
a
dumpling
looks
somewhat
like
a
kind
of
money
that
was
used
in
ancient
times. ⑤_____
It
is
a
custom
to
eat
dumplings
on
Chinese
New
Year's
Eve
as
well
as
on
the
first
and
fifth
days
of
the
new
year.
A.Making
decorations.
B.Having
preparations
in
advance.
C.The
new
year
has
two
wonderful
festivals.
D.Every
family
will
clean
the
house
one
week
ahead
of
the
new
year.
E.In
reality,
the
sound
of
firecrackers
can
increase
the
festival
atmosphere.
F.People
believe
the
more
dumplings
you
eat,
the
more
wealth
you
will
get
during
the
new
year.
G.But
in
the
eyes
of
Chinese
people,
the
traditional
time
of
the
new
beginning
is
the
Spring
Festival.

Amanda
felt
as
gray
as
the
sky
outside
when
she
looked
across
the
table
at
her
three-year-old
sister.
Li
sat
on
a
booster
seat,
drinking
from
her
sippy
cup(鸭嘴杯).
Wondering
why
Li
was
still
afraid
of
her,
Amanda
took
a
cookie
from
her
plate
and
handed
it
to
Li,
"Want
a
bite "
As
soon
as
Li
saw
Amanda
reaching
over,
her
eyes
widened.
She
jumped
down
from
her
seat
and
raced
to
her
room.
What
an
annoyance!
Amanda
complained
to
Mom
that
she
had
thought
being
a
big
sister
would
be
fun.
Mom
took
Amanda's
hand
reminding
her
that
Li
was
in
a
new
country
with
a
new
family
and
how
scared
she
might
be.
"Honey,
she
is
still
getting
used
to
you,"
Mom
added.
"It's
only
been
two
weeks."
Over
a
year
ago,
Amanda's
parents
said
that
they
were
adopting
a
daughter
from
China,
and
Amanda
had
danced
with
excitement.
She'd
dreamed
of
taking
her
sister
to
the
park,
reading
books
to
her,
and
teaching
her
to
ride
a
bicycle.
That
hadn't
happened,
though.
In
the
weeks
since
their
trip
to
China,
Li
had
only
let
their
mom
and
dad
near
her.
Amanda
had
drawn
pictures
for
her,
read
to
her,
and
made
funny
faces,
but
none
had
worked.
Whenever
she
got
close,
Li
ran
away.
"I
just
wish
I
knew
how
to
help
her,"
Amanda
said
to
herself,
thinking
of
Li's
frightened
eyes.
As
she
sat
onto
the
couch,
