Volunteering
abroad
is
a
great
way
to
help
others,improve
your
skills
and
become
a
more
confident,independent person.
If
you
are
interested
in
volunteering
abroad,here
are some
places
to
go.
Australia
If
you
seek
a
life
on
the
beach,in
a
great
climate
with friendly
people,Australia
might
be
your
best
bet.
With
thou sands
of
volunteers
already
signing
up
to
leave
for
Australia during
the
holidays,it
will
be
a
very
popular
option.
Brazil
This
vast
country
has
some
great
opportunities
on offer
and
is
especially
popular
this
year.
A
lot
of
volunteer work
is
available
in
Brazil
centers
on
conservation
and
eco-logical
projects.
With
the
world's
largest
rainforest
in Brazil,of
which
huge
part
is
in
danger,there
are
lots
of different
jobs
you
can
do.
Kenya
Kenya

the
destination
for
those

an
African
experience.

in
orphanages (孤儿院)
or
with
local
children
living
in
slums(贫民窟).There
is
a
great
demand
for
volunteers
in
Africa
because
many people
live
in
poverty,so
if
you
truly
feel
like
making
a
difference
to
a
community,Kenya
should
be
at
the
top
of
your
list.
Costa
Rica
Golden
sandy
beaches,clear
coastlines
and
beautiful cities
are
what
Costa
Rica
is
all
about.
Because
of
its
small size,you
can
see
a
lot
of
the
country
in
just
a
short
time. You
can
really
make
the
most
of
your
time
as
a
volunteer. A
lot
of
work
is
needed
with
wildlife
and
ecological
work,so
if
you
want
to
look
after
turtles(海龟)
on
the
beach,Costa
Rica
could
be
just
the
place
for
you.

A
new
study
from
brain
researchers
helps
explain
how C the
human
brain
evolved,or
changed
over
time,to
permit people
to
speak
and
write.
Michael
Ullman,the
lead
researcher,a
professor
at Georgetown
University
Medical
School
in
Washington,D.C,has
been
studying
language
learning
for
more
than
20
years.
Ullman
says
his
research
shows
that
the
human
brain does
not
have
a
special
area
or
system
for
making
language. Over
time
we
have
simply
reused
or
co-opted(指派)
parts of
our
brain
for
language.
And
those
parts,he
says,are ancient-older
even
than
humans
themselves.
I
This
study
examines
the
theoretical
framework(准则)
that
language
is
learned,stored
and
processed
in
two
ancient
learning
and
memory
systems
in
the
brain.”
Ullman,Hamrick
and
the
rest
of
the
team
looked
at data
from
16
other
studies
on
language.
They
found
that people
learn
language
using
two
memory
systems:declarative
and
procedural.
Memorizing
vocabulary,for
example,is
a
declarative
memory
process.
But
learning
grammar
is,mostly,a
procedural
memory
process.
“Declarative
memory,in
humans
at
least,is
what
we
think
of
as
learning
memory,such
as,Oh,remember what
you
said
last
night
or
things
like
that.
And
procedural motor
memory
is
what
we
often
call
motor
memory
such
as how
you
learn
to
ride
a
bicycle.”Or,Ullman
adds,“These procedural
memory
skills
become
so
deeply
learned
that
we are
no
longer
aware
that
we
are
doing
them.”
However,Ullman
explains
that
the
two
long-term memory
systems
can
share
tasks.
And,he
ads,the
adult brain
uses
the
systems
to
learn
language
a
bit
differently than
a
child's
brain.
“Adult
language
learners
of
a
second
language
may
use
their
declarative
memory
for
using
grammar
patterns. They
think
about
it
purposefully.
For
a
child,the
grammar may
come
more
naturally.
They
don't
have
to
think
about the
grammar
rules
before
speaking.”
In
addition
to
language
learners,Ullman's
study
could help
people
who
have
a
brain
injury
that
affects
speaking
and writing.
This
knowledge
can
also
help
those
who
have
learning disabilities
such
as
dyslexia(阅读障碍).
People
with
dyslexia have
difficulty
recognizing
words
and
symbols
accurately.
8.
How
did
Ullman
study
human's
memory
systems
A.
By
examining
the
brain
with
his
team.
B.
By
studying
language
learning
over
years.
C.
By
comparing
different
languages
year
after
year.
D.
By
referring
to
data
from
other
studies
on
language.
9.
Which
of
the
following
is
an
example
of
“motor
memory”
A.
Learning
to
make
a
model
plane.
B.
Remembering
the
grammar
patterns.
C.
Repeating
what
you
heard.
D.
Memorizing
what
you
read.
10.
What
does
the
underlined
word“it”refer
to
A.
Declarative
memory.
B.
An
adult
language
learner.
C.
Using
grammar
patterns.
D.
A
second
language.
11.
What's
the
main
idea
of
the
text
A.
Ullman
has
advanced
our
language
understanding.
B.A
new
research
helps
people
learn
a
new
language.
C.
Learning
memory
is
more
active
than
motor
memory.
D.
Human
beings
learn
language
in
pre
human
area
of
brain.

The
holidays
are
the
best
time
to
ask
the
elders
in your
family
for
advice.
For
most
people,the
approaching holiday
season
includes
more
time
with
the
extended family,including
the
elder
generation.
Unfortunately,older
adults
are
often
unseen
in
the popular
media.
Yet
there's
a
big
body
of
evidence
that shows
the
benefits
of
older
adults'
wisdom
and
the
value
of developing
communication
across
generations.
First,over
the
course
of
human
history,older
people have
played
very
important
roles
as
advice-givers.
Anthropological(人类学)
research
shows
that
survival
in
pre-liter ate
societies
was
dependent
on
the
knowledge
of
the
oldest members.
In
recent
times,most
of
the
researches
about
intergenerational
communication
occur
within
formal
programs,such
as ones
including
older
adults
in
public
schools
or
having
youth visit
assisted
living
facilities.
Also,you
can
apply
many
of
the lessons
of
the
researches
to
your
own
family
gatherings.
There
is
clear
evidence
that
it
is
good
for
young
people
to spend
time
with
older
adults.
The
youth
who
participated
in
intergenerational
programs
showed
more
respect
toward
older adults,less
anxiety,and
higher
self-esteem.
Research
also shows
that
interacting
with
younger
people
is
good
for
older adults,A
systematic
review
found
that
older
adults
who
participated
in
intergenerational
programs
were
likely
to
experience more
satisfaction
with
their
lives,higher
self-esteem
and
fewer symptoms
of
depression.
Interactions
during
intergenerational programs
can
be
positive
even
when
an
older
adult
is
experiencing
memory
or
cognitive
problems,
Having
children
teach
computer
or
video
games
to
the older
generations
can
be
a
fun
way
to
spend
time
together. A
study
found
that
intergenerational
games
can
help
family members
to
bond.
Another
idea
is
to
encourage
the
youth
to
ask
older
family
members
for
their
advice
about
life.
The
youth
can
ask
older
adults
specific
questions
about the
lessons
they
learned
from
their
life
experiences.
The
take-home
message
is
that
time
with
older relatives
is
one
of
the
true
gifts
of
the
holiday
season.
Make the
most
of
it
by
spending
time
with
the
older
generation!
12.
Which
of
the
following
statements
would
the
author most
probably
agree
with
A.
The
popular
media
attaches
great
importance
to
the old.
B.
Holidays
are
the
perfect
time
to
stay
with
old
people.
C.
Today's
people
like
turning
to
the
elderly
for
advice.
D.
Old
people
become
unwise
due
to
their
aging.
13.
Why
did
the
author
mention
the
anthropological
research
in the
third
paragraph
A.
To
state
how
modern
societies
develop.
B.
To
show
young
people
are
much
cleverer.
C.
To
explain
why
today's
aging
turns
out
to
be
worse.
D.
To
prove
older
people
are
intelligent
and
experienced.
14.
What
can
we
know
about
the
intergenerational
programs
A.
They
are
helpful
to
both
the
old
and
the
young.
B.
They
are
unpopular
with
older
people.
C.
Their
lessons
aren't
suitable
for
family
gatherings.
D.
Their
participants
don't
include
unhealthy
older
adults.
15.
From
this
passage,we
can
learn
that
it
is
important
to _______·
A.
respect
and
accompany
older
people
B.
ask
older
people
for
advice
for
holidays
C.
pay
attention
to
the

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
One
day,my
brother
and
I
were
alone
in
our
apartment. The
reason
was
that
my
parents
had
both
gone
for
a
ball
party and
had
left
me
in
charge
of
everything.
I
was
doing
my
home-work
while
my
younger
brother
was
watching
TV.
All
of
a sudden,the
doorbell
rang.
Ding-Dong!
Ding-Dong!
My younger
brother
had
rushed
to
the
door
before
I
decided
to
answer
the
door.
We
both
thought
that
our
parents
had
come home.
As
a
result,he
unlocked
the
door
and
opened
it.
Outside
of
the
house
stood
a
man
who
wore
a
black raincoat
and
black
rubber
boots.
He
looked
no
different from
other
people
and
he
said
that
he
was
a
salesman
and asked
politely
if
our
mother
or
father
was
at
home
so
he could
talk
with
them.
Without
any
thinking,my
brother
said,“No.”He asked
if
we
would
like
to
buy
some
comic
books,which
he was
selling.
I
quickly
explained
to
him
that
we
were
not supposed
to
buy
anything
without
our
parents'
permission. However,it
seemed
that
he
was
not
willing
to
follow
my advice
and
he
had
an
intention
to
enter
our
house.
Then,I
realized
something
terrible
would
happen.
As I
was
about
to
close
the
door,he
forced
his
way
into
our house.
He
took
out
a
knife
and
forced
me
to
tie
up
my
__________brother's
hands
with
some
rope
which
he
took
out
from
his pocket,I
tied
up
his
hands
but
I
tied
it
in
a
special
way
so my
brother
could
untie
himself
as
we
often
did.
The
man then
tied
my
hands
up
and
locked
both
of
us
in
the
kitchen.
Soon,he
went
upstairs
to
search
the
bedroom
for something
valuable.
I
managed
to
teach
my
brother
to
untie the
rope
on
his
hands,He
then
untied
me,I
rushed
to
the telephone
to
call
the
police,but
line
was
dead.
