I’m not much of a crier most of the time. But recently when I was reading a book on a plane, I started crying. Of course, it came as a big surprise when tears came up, no matter how hard I tried, I wasn't able to control myself.
Oh no, not this now, I thought to myself. But even as the thought entered my brain, I felt the first hot drop of salty water coming down my face. I put my head down, hoping that I could go on reading.
In fact, the harder I tried, the more tears pushed their way out of my eyes. You could guess how surprised the man next to me looked.
I dropped my head in shame. He must think I was crazy. Maybe I could turn toward him, hold up the cover of the book and say in my crying voice, “I’m sorry, sir. I’ve been that girl who has spent so much time trying to make sure people didn’t think I was crazy. But now I don’t want to be that girl any more --- that bored and sad girl. When I was 15 months old, I had a bad fall. I landed on a glass rabbit and it cut my eye badly enough to blind it. The doctor said if the eye was taken out, my face would become out of shape, so my scarred (有疤痕的), blind and grey eyes lived on with me.
Not all people were friendly to me. Some asked uncomfortable questions about my eye or even played jokes on me. When the kids played games, I was always the “bad guy”. I grew up imagining (想象) that everyone looked down on me.

Let them see the love that is inside.” Mum’s love and encouragement gave me the confidence to remove my own doubt (怀疑). Finally I was able to face everything bravely. I learned not only to appreciate (欣赏) myself but to have love for others.
“Hold your head up high” has been heard many times in my home. Each of my children has felt its power. It lives on with my children.
