Many of us mistakenly believe that it’s wrong to think we have any good qualities. We may spend a lot of time blaming ourselves for our negative qualities, thinking that self-criticism is the key to improving our performance. However, a constant focus on our supposed shortcomings can stop our efforts to make friends with other people. How can we believe that others could like us if we believe our inner being is flawed
If someone seems to dislike you, the reason for that dislike might have little or nothing to do with you. The person who doesn’t like you might be fearful, or shallow, or busy or shy. Perhaps you and that person are simply a mismatch for each other at this particular time.
Don’t take yourself out of the game by deciding that your flaws are bigger than your good qualities. In fact, some of the very qualities you consider to be flaws may be irresistible to someone else. For all the factors that might cause one person to reject you, there are at least many factors that will work in your favor when you are getting on with someone else.
You might be thirty pounds over your ideal weight, but you may have a wonderful laugh and real enthusiasm for life. There are many people who don’t mind your extra pounds. You may drive a shabby car, but you might be a great dancer and a loyal friend. There are people out there looking for loyalty, or fun, or sweetness, or wisdom, so the package it comes in is not important. If you are worried that you are not beautiful enough to attract friends, keep in mind that not everyone is looking for physical beauty in their friends. You can decide to feel inferior (低等的) because you don’t have much money and you don’t drive a nice car. You can believe that this is the reason that you don’t have many friends in your life. On the other hand, if you are very wealthy you may be suspicious about whether everyone is after your money and that nobody really likes you as a person.
The point is that you can focus on just about anything and believe it’s the reason you do not have friends and cannot make any.

Money with no strings attached. It’s not something you see every day. But at Union Station in Los Angeles last month, a board went up with dollar bills attached to it with pins and a sign that read, “Give What You Can, Take What You Need.”
People quickly caught on. And while many took dollars, many others pinned their own cash to the board. “People of all ages, races, and socio-economic(社会经济的)backgrounds gave and took,” said Tyler Bridges of The Toolbox, which created the project. “We even had a bride in her wedding dress come up to the board and take a few dollars.”Most of the bills on the board were singles, but a few people left fives, tens and even twenties. The video clip(片段) shows one man who had found a $20 bill pinning it to the board.
“What I can say for the folks that gave the most, is that they were full of smiles,”Bridges said.“There’s a certain feeling that giving can do for you and that was apparent in those that gave the most.”Most people who took dollars took only a few, but Bridges said a very small number took as much as they could.
While the clip might look like part of a new ad campaign, Bridges said the only goal was to show generosity and sympathy. He added that he hopes people in other cities might try similar projects and post their own videos on the Internet.

There was a man playing the piano in a bar. He was a good piano player and always performed in this bar. People came in just to hear him play. But one night, a customer told him that he didn’t want to hear him just play the piano any more. He wanted him to sing a song.
The man said, “I don’t sing.”
But the customer was persistent (执着的). He told the bar manager, “I’m tired of listening to the piano. I want that man to sing!”
The manager shouted across the room, “If you want to get paid, sing a song. Our customer is asking you to sing!”So he did. He sang a song. A piano player who had never sung in public did so for the first time. And everyone was surprised by his song Mona Lisa. He got lots of applause(掌声) that night.
He had such a talent for singing, but he just had been sitting on his talent for the past years! If without such a chance, he may have lived the rest of his life as a no-name piano player in a no-name bar. However, now he has become one of the best-known singers in America.
You, too, have skills and abilities. Maybe your “talent” is not as great as the singer above, but it may be better than you think! And with effort, most skills can be improved. So, in your life, you should be brave enough to try doing different things and find out what talents you really have!

Some people are so rude. Who sends an e-mail or a text message that just says “Thank you” Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you Who asks for a fact easily found on the Internet 1
Maybe I’m the rude one for not appreciating life’s little courtesies(礼节). But many social norms(规范) just don’t make sense to people drowning in digital communication.
Take the thank-you note. Daniel Post Senning, a coauthor of Emily Post’s Etiquette, asked, “At what point does showing appreciation outweigh the cost ”
2 Think of how long it takes to listen to one of those messages. In texts, you don’t have to declare who you are or even say hello. E-mail, too, is slower than a text. The worst are those who leave a voice mail and then send an e-mail message to tell you they left a voice mail.
This isn’t the first time technology has changed our manners. 3 Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor, suggested that people say, “Ahoy!”Finally, hello won out, and the victory sped up the greeting’s use in face-to-face communications.
In the age of the smart phone, there is no reason to ask once-acceptable questions about: the weather forecast, a business’s phone number, or directions to a house, a restaurant, or an office, which can be easily found on a digital map. 4 And when you answer, they respond with a thank-you e-mail.
How to handle these differing standards Easy: Consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones, appreciate a thank-you message. 5 In traditional societies, the young learn from the old. But in modern societies, the old can also learn from the young. Here’s hoping that politeness never goes out of fashion but that time-wasting forms of communication do.
A.Then there is the voice mail.
B.Others, like me, want no reply.
C.But people still ask these things.
D.Don’t these people realize that they’re wasting your time
E.Won’t new technology bring about changes in our daily life
F.Face-to-face communication makes comprehension much easier.
G.When the telephone was invented, people didn’t know how to greet a caller.

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried. Arthur stopped and said, “It looks like you’ve got a problem.”
“I’m afraid so. I’m in a big hurry and I can’t start my car.”
“Is there something I can do to help ” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.”
“No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.”
The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the long loud noise of an alarm.
It was from the bank. There had been a robbery (抢劫)!
Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened ” But everyone had a different answer.
Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him.
She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me like that ” he thought. “The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!”
Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run.

I have a case to report to the police. The man shouting behind is the bank thief!”The taxi raced away to the police station like an arrow.;
The taxi stopped in front of the police station. Arthur said to the police who had been waiting and who had already received the robbery report, “This suitcase is that of the bank robber. It may be filled with the money stolen from the bank. I hand it to you. Please get ready to arrest the man.”

A
I start every summer with the best of intentions: to attack one big book from the past, a classic that I was supposed to have read when young and ambitious. Often the pairings of books and settings have been purely accidental: “Moby Dick” on a three-day cross-country train trip; “The Magic Mountain” in a New England beachside cottage with no locks on the doors, no telephones or televisions in the rooms, and little to do beyond a row on the salt pond. Attempting “The Man Without Qualities” on a return to Hawaii, my native state, however, was less fruitful: I made it through one and a quarter volumes (册), then decided that I’d got the point and went swimming instead.
But this summer I find myself at a loss. I’m not quite interested in Balzac, or “Tristram Shandy”. There’s always “War and Peace”, which I’ve covered some distance several times, only to get bogged down in the “War” part, set it aside for a while, and realize that I have to start over from the beginning again, having forgotten everyone’s name and social rank. How appealing to simply fall back on a favorite-once more into “The Waves” or “Justine”, which feels almost like cheating, too exciting and too much fun to properly belong in serious literature.
And then there’s Stendhal’s “The Red and the Black”, which happens to be the name of my favorite cocktail (鸡尾酒) of the summer, created by Michael Cecconi at Savoy and Back Forty. It is easy to drink, and knocking back three or four seems like such a delightful idea. Cecconi’s theory: “I take whatever’s fresh at the green market and turn it into liquid.” The result is a pure shot of afternoon in the park, making one feel cheerful and peaceful all at once, lying on uncut grass with eyes shut, sun beating through the lids.
1.What can we infer about the author from the first paragraph
A.He has a cottage in New England.
B.He shows talents for literature.
C.He enjoys reading when traveling.
D.He admires a lot of great writers.
2.What do the underlined words “get bogged down” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Get confused.B.Be carried away.
C.Be interrupted.D.Make no progress.
3.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.The Books of Summer
B.My Summer Holidays
C.To Read or Not to Read
D.It’s Never Too Late to Read
【解题思路】根据第一段中的“Moby Dick” on a three-day cross-country train trip;“The Magic Mountain” in a New England beachside cottage... “The Man Without Qualities”on a return to Hawaii等内容可知,作者在旅行中喜欢读名著,故选C。
【解题思路】根据句中的covered some distance several times和set it aside for a while及读后的结果having forgotten everyone’s name and social rank可知,作者在读“战争”部分时几次合上书,把书放一边。 这与Make no progress同义,故选D。
答案:3.A
But this summer I find myself at a loss. 所以全文都和夏天读书有关,The Books of Summer适合作为标题,故选A。

It’s a common belief that the roles actors play might somehow reflect their true personalities. It’s usually not true, but British actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge is an exception.
Just like Fleabag, the character she played in the comedy-drama series of the same name, Waller-Bridge feels that her life is a mess. “It’s just really wonderful to know that a dirty and messed up woman can make it to the Emmys,” she said. She may be “messed up”, but Variety magazine calls her an “all-around icon”.
Last year, Waller-Bridge took home three Emmy awards for her work on Fleabag-best writing in a comedy series, best lead actress, and best comedy series.
Her success is partly because of her family. Waller-Bridge was brought up in a free environment. Her mother always told her, “You can be whatever you want if you imagine it.” So Waller-Bridge broke all the rules about what a “good” girl should do. “Our laws and moral codes don’t apply-she lives without fear of consequence,” The Sun noted.
That fearlessness extends to being authentic (真实的) in her writing and acting. Unlike the can-do heroines and strong, successful women in many TV dramas, Waller-Bridge shows a flawed but real character. Fleabag was a screw-up who always found a way to say or do the wrong thing. “It resonated with the lives of stressed-out women everywhere in reality-doing their best to find balance in their lives,” a viewer wrote on the US movie website.
Villanelle in Killing Eve, another hit TV series developed by Waller-Bridge, was a little bit violent but showed no interest in the rules others created, which made many people see themselves in her.
“People have been scared to write characters like these. But I think, now, women are so relieved to have this new template (样板). And, aren’t we all a bit of everything ” Waller-Bridge said in an interview with Indian Express.
With such courage and sincerity, Waller-Bridge is, without doubt, a “golden girl” in Hollywood, Australian news website The New Daily commented.
4.What is the article mainly about
A.What helped Waller-Bridge succeed in comedy.
B.The popularity of the comedy-drama series Fleabag.
C.What inspired Waller-Bridge to take up writing and acting.
D.The similarities between Phoebe Waller-Bridge and the character she played in Fleabag.
5.How did Waller-Bridge’s parents influence her growth
A.They pushed her to follow social codes.
B.They constantly encouraged her to be herself.
C.They always reminded her to be curious and fearless.
D.They taught her to write and act when she was young.
6.What does the underlined phrase “resonated with” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Messed up.
B.Paid attention to.
C.Had great effects on.
D.Was in agreement with.
7.What do Villanelle in Killing Eve and Fleabag in Fleabag have in common
A.Both are courageous and organized.
B.Both are much alike in character.
C.Both successfully find balance in their lives.
D.Both are rebellious but strong and successful.
答案:4.A
故选A。
【解题思路】根据第四段第三、四句“Her mother always told her,‘You can be whatever you want if you imagine it.’So Waller-Bridge broke all the rules about what a‘good’girl should do.”
【解题思路】根据画线短语前的“Fleabag was a screw-up who always found a way to say or do the wrong thing.” 结合下文“the lives of stressed-out women everywhere in reality-doing their best to find balance in their lives”可知,生活中压力大的女性在平衡她们的生活时,也总是会犯错。由此推知“resonated with”与“was in agreement with”有相近含义,可解释为“产生共鸣”。
【解题思路】根据倒数第三段内容可知,Villanelle有点暴力,对其他人创造的规则毫无兴趣;结合倒数第四段第三句“Fleabag was a screw-up who always found a way to say or do the wrong thing.”

1.reliable
2.possibly
3.are setting
故填are setting。
答案:4.When/Once/If
故填When/Once/If。
答案:5.than

答案:6.which
故填which。
答案:7.detecting
分析句子结构可知,空处需填非谓语动词,The system和detect之间为逻辑上的主动关系,not only... but also...
答案:8.of
故填of。
答案:9.itself
10.to be completed
故填to be completed。

答案:The novel The Million Pound Bank Note was written by Mark Twain. Humorously, Mark Twain successfully described a sarcastic adventure of Henry Adams.
Two rich men have a bet on Henry to see what will happen to Henry with a million-pound bank note which can’t be cashed. A month later, he becomes a millionaire dramatically and even wins the love of a pretty lady.
What impresses me most is that it is maybe not Henry, but people’s crazy love for money, that fools the world.
