How can you make use of the Batman Effect Imagine yourself as someone who is the best for the task you are doing. If you're facing a personal difficulty, imagine yourself as a wise family member. Resting my head on Helen's shoulder, I put my arms round her waist (腰). She drew me to her, and we rested in silence.
We had not sat long before another person came in.
Some heavy clouds, swept from the sky by a rising wind, had left the moon bright; and her light, coming in through a window near, shone full both on us and on the coming person, Miss Temple.
“I came on purpose to find you, Jane Eyre, ”she said. “I want you in my room, and as Helen Burns is with you, she may come too. ”
We followed Miss Temple to her apartment. It had a good fire, and looked cheerful.
Miss Temple told Helen Burns to be seated in a low arm chair on one side of the fireplace, and herself taking another, she called me to her side.
“Is it all over ” she asked, looking down at my face. “Have you cried your sadness away ”
“I am afraid I never shall do that. ”
“Why ”
“Because I have been wrongly accused (指责), and you and everybody else, will now think me a bad girl. ”
“We shall think you what you prove yourself to be, my child. Continue to act as a good girl, and you will satisfy us. ”
“Shall I, Miss Temple ”
“You will, ” said Miss Temple. “You have been accused of lying when you were little. Tell us the truth, but add nothing and exaggerate (夸大) nothing. ”
I made up my mind that I would be most modest and most correct. Having thought for a few minutes about where to start, I told her all the story of my sad childhood.

Have you ever thought about being a pirate (海盗) You may have read about pirates in stories―and thought that it would be a great life. Pirates sail all day and never have to go to school. But think again! A pirate's life may not be as much fun as you think.
Food is not easy to find at sea. There are no fridges on board so you can forget about eating fresh food. Meat goes bad after just a few days. Dry food like bread has insects and other nasty creatures (令人讨厌的生物) crawling (爬) inside. Imagine eating a sandwich full of insects or meat served with maggots (蛆虫) in it. Pirates' hammocks (吊床) are often hung over barrels (桶) of stored food! That's the perfect place for mice to live. If you became a pirate, you could wake up each morning sharing your bed with a few friendly mice. Going to the toilet is not that easy, either! Over the side of the ship is the only place for this. Bad weather makes this really tricky, even for the most experienced sailor.
It's not all easy sailing on a pirate ship. Some of the time you will have to fight with other large, hairy pirates with long swords (剑), huge guns. This could be really dangerous ― deadly!
So if you are thinking of being a pirate, maybe you should go back to school and find out a few more facts before you set sail. Being a pirate might not be as much fun as you think.
57. The writer thinks being a pirate would be ________.
A. full of problems B. fun but dangerous
C. a great way to live D. better than going to school
58. The writer says that fresh food on a ship ________.
A. goes bad quickly B. can be easy to find
C. is used for making sandwiches D. needs to be put in a fridge
59. Maggots can be found in ________.
A. bread B. meat C. fresh fruit D. vegetables
60. The underlined words “not all easy sailing” in Paragraph 3 mean pirate ships
______.
A. are full of danger B. are beautiful
C. can be bad and boring D. need smooth seas to sail
D
Classic books never go out of fashion. The book The Outsiders first came out in 1967. Even though the book is old, it is still worth (值得) reading. It is written by US writer S. E. Hinton.
The book tells the story of a 14 year old boy called Ponyboy Curtis. He struggles with rights and wrong in a society where he believes he is an outsider. The story took place in Oklahoma, the US, in 1965.
In the book, the children are divided into two groups. One includes Curtis and the Greasers, which are mostly made up of poor kids. They have longer hair and often smoke at a young age. The other group is called the Socs, which is made up of rich children. They wear expensive clothes and drive high tech cars. Those two groups do not get along well. The book only shows us two weeks of the boys' life.
I was touched by the friendship among the boys. When any of them has a problem, the others will help. Although they are not well educated (教育), they are kind and brave. For example, when Johnny was hurt in hospital, his friends visited him almost every day. They brought him food and told him interesting stories. I always dreamed of having a kind and strong friendship like this.
This book shows the beautiful personalities (人格) in those ordinary people. I advise that teenagers read this book and I hope they can enjoy it.
61. What does the writer mean by saying “Classic books never go out of fashion. ”
A. Books for classroom reading are popular.
B. Good books are worth reading all the time.
C. Students should read some fashionable books.
D. The book The Outsiders is not popular at present.
62. The story in the book took place ________.
A. in 1965 B. in 1967
C. more than 14 years ago D. before 1965
63. The writer of the book divides the boys into two groups according to ________.
A. their families' wealth B. their looks
C. their studies D. their personalities
64. The writer always dreamed about ________ in his life.
A. health B. knowledge
C. friendship D. further education
65. The writer wrote this text to ________.
A. tell us his early life B. introduce a book to teenagers
C. explain what is right and wrong to us D. tell us the book is not popular

六、范文:
Reading Makes a Full Man
Reading is very important in our life. We can get knowledge through reading. It can not only open our eyes but also make us more intelligent. Besides, reading is also one of the most important ways to learn a foreign language like English.
Textbooks, newspapers, magazines and other kinds of reading materials can help us know more about the outside world and help us grow into an excellent person.
I'm planning to read at least 5 books in the coming holiday. And I'll spend more time reading every day in my senior high school life.
Reading makes a full man! Let's start reading now.
Reading makes a full man! Let's start reading now. 点题, 发出号召。
