Papa, as a son of a dirt-poor farmer, left school early and went to work in a factory, for education was for the rich then. So, the world became his school. With great interest, he read everything he could lay his hands on, listened to the town elders and learned about the world beyond his tiny hometown."There's so much to learn," he'd say.“Though we're born stupid, only the stupid remain that way.”He was determined that none of his children would be denied(拒绝)an education.
Thus, Papa insisted that we learn at least one new thing each day.And dinner time seemed perfect for sharing what we had learned. We would talk about the news of the day;no matter how insignificant, it was never taken lightly.Papa would listen carefully and was ready with some comment, always to the point.
Then came the moment-the time to share the day's new learning.
Papa, at the head of the table, would push back his chair and pour a glass of red wine, ready to listen.
Felice, “he'd say,”tell me what you learned today.“learned that the population of Nepal is...”
Silence.
Papa was thinking about what was said, as if the salvation(拯救)of the world would depend upon it.“The population of Nepal.Hmm.Well...”he'd say.“Get the map; let's see where Nepal is.” And the whole family went on a search for Nepal.
This same experience was repeated until each family member had a turn.Dinner ended only after we had a clear understanding of at least half a dozen such facts.
As children, we thought very.little about these educational wonders. Our family, however, was growing together, sharing experiences and participating in one another’s education And by looking at us,listening to us, respecting our input, affirming(肯定)our value; giving us a sense of dignity, Papa -was unquestionably our most influential teacher.
Later during my training as a future teacher studied with some of the most famous educators. They were imparting(传授)what Papa had known all along-the value of continual learning. His technique has served me well all my life. Not a single day has been wasted, though I can never tell when knowing the population,of Nepal might prove useful.
40.What do we know from the first paragraph
A.Those born stupid could not change their life.
B.The poor could hardly afford school education.
C.The town elders wanted to learn about the world.
D.The author's father was born in a worker's family.

42.It can be learned from the passage that the author_________.
A.enjoyed talking about news B.knew very well about Nepal
C.felt regret about those wasted days D.appreciated his father's educational technique

Faced with a declining population and shrinking workforce, Japan has been increasingly turning to robots for help. Over the years, the androids have been employed to perform a large number of human tasks, including building products and providing care and companionship for the elderly. The latest addition to the Japanese “workforce” may be Model-T. Designed by Telexistence Inc., this seven-foot-tall robot is currently undergoing trials restocking sandwiches, drinks, and ready meals on shelves at select locations of local convenience store chains Lawson and FamilyMart.
Telexistence has received funding from technology investment company Softbank Group and cell phone service operator KDDI in Japan, with overseas investors including European passenger aircraft maker Airbus Ventures. It named its robot Model-T, a nod to the Ford Motor car that began the age of mass motoring a century ago.
Model-T, whose face somewhat resembles that of a kangaroo, is certainly not the first restocking robot. However, the warehouse robots currently being used by companies, like Walmart and Amazon, are only able to accomplish single, repetitive tasks, such as carrying boxes. Model-T, on the other hand, has a wide range of movement and can be used to restock objects of various sizes, making it ideal for convenience and grocery stores, which sell a large variety of items.
“It is able to grasp or pick and place objects of several different shapes and sizes into different locations,” Matt Komatsu, head of business development and operations at Telexistence Inc., told CNN Business. However, Model-T is not autonomous. Instead, it is operated by human “pilots” wearing a virtual reality(VR) headset and special gloves, which allow them to feel the product the robot is holding in their hands and guide it to the right shelf. Since the video connection between the robot and the human operator has a mere 50 milliseconds delay, the navigation process is seamless. Telexistence says the VR-controlled androids are easier to develop and maintain. They are also ten times cheaper than autonomous robots, which require complex programming.
Though Model-T appears to have passed the trials, it is not quite ready to enter the labor force. Besides being a lot slower than human labour, it is also only capable of lifting packaged items, and cannot grasp loose items such as fruits and vegetables. Telexistence hopes to introduce a faster Model-T within the next two years.
45.What is the main driving factor for the invention of Model-T
A.The demands of senior citizens. B.The development of technology.
C.The shortage of labour force. D.The appeal of convenience stores.
46.What’s the hidden message behind the name Model-T
A.It is an updated version of Ford Motor. B.It may create a new age like Ford Motor.
C.Its bond with Ford Motor is inseparable. D.Its design is as fashionable as Ford Motor.
47.How is Model-T different from other restocking robots
A.It has a cute appearance to attract customers. B.It can accomplish single and repetitive tasks.
C.It is flexible while performing its duty. D.It comes in a wide variety of sizes.
48.What can we learn about Model-T according to Paragraph 4
A.It doesn’t need maintenance. B.It performs tasks automatically.
C.It requires complex programming. D.It depends largely on human’s operation.
49.What does the underlined word “seamless” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Smooth. B.Complex. C.Time-consuming. D.Annoying.
50.What is mainly discussed about Model-T in the last paragraph
A.Its limitations. B.Its working principle.
C.Its applications. D.Its exciting prospect.

The Milky Way is full of habitable (宜居) places, with roughly half of all sunlike stars hosting Earth-size worlds that could be friendly to life.
Here’s a good sign for alien hunters: More than 300 million worlds with similar conditions to Earth are spread throughout the Milky Way galaxy. A new analysis concludes that roughly half of the galaxy’s sunlike stars host rocky worlds in habitable zones where liquid water could pool or flow over the planets’ surfaces.
Astronomers estimated the number of these planets using data from NASA’s planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft. For nine years, Kepler stared at the stars and watched for the brief twinkles produced when orbiting planets block a portion of their star’s light. By the end of its mission in 2018, Kepler had spotted some 2,800 exoplanets (外星行星) — many of them nothing like the worlds orbiting our sun.
But Kepler’s primary goal was always to determine how common planets like Earth are. The calculation required help from the European Space Agency’s Gaia spacecraft, which monitors stars across the galaxy. With Gaia’s observations in hand, scientists were finally able to determine that the Milky Way is populated by hundreds of millions of Earth-size planets orbiting sunlike stars — and that the nearest one is probably within 20 light-years of the solar system.
It took more than half a century for scientists to start pinning down how many planets could possibly host life. In 1961, astronomers knew of no worlds orbiting stars other than the sun — and although planetary formation theories suggested exoplanets should be common, we had no observational evidence that they existed. But over the past decade, it’s become clear that planets are extremely common, outnumbering stars in the Milky Way. On average, nearly every star is home to at least one orbiting world.
Early estimates suggested that perhaps 20 percent of sunlike stars hosted a world that met those criteria. We now know that the number is closer to 50 percent, if not more.
Of course, many factors determine whether a world in the habitable zone is truly friendly for life. Planetary characteristics such as magnetic fields, atmospheres, and plate tectonics all play a role, and those are difficult to observe on small, faraway worlds.
51.When the author says, “Here’s a good sign for alien hunters”, he probably means____.
A.that’s good news for hunters B.we will find aliens soon
C.there is a clear signal from alien D.many sunlike stars have been found that may be habitable
52.How did Kepler work to find exoplanets
A.By observing the brief flicker that occurs when orbiting planets block some of the star’s light.
B.By using the data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia spacecraft.
C.By calculating the stars in the galaxy.
D.Through its own calculation.
53.What can we infer from paragraph 4
A.Kepler’s primary goal was to make sure that the Earth is a common planet.
B.Kepler helped Gaia to calculate the planets.
C.Gaia is only 20 light-years away from the solar system.
D.Kepler monitors stars across the Milky Way.
54.What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about
A.The importance of planetary formation theories.
B.Exoplanets are common.
C.Scientists spent more than half a century to find out how many planets host life.
D.Astronomers have known of no worlds orbiting stars other than the sun since 1961.
55.Many factors determine whether a world in the habitable zone is truly friendly for life EXCEPT____.
A.oxygen B.atmospheres C.magnetic fields D.plate tectonics

I'm no literary luddite I bought an iPad with my first paycheck from my first full time job after I graduated college. But after two years of reading occasionally on the device, I gave it away to my brother. It just wasn't the right reading experience for me.
Technology lovers choose e-readers over books because e readers are more convenient. They're right. It is objectively easier to carry an 7oz. tablet with thousands and thousands of books at your fingertips than it is to carry five books in your bag (which is exactly what I did on vacation).
But I don't read for convenience. I read to learn more about the world and myself. I have made friends by seeing a book cover in a cafe and noticing that it was the same title that I was reading. I can trace my life by the books that have been my companions. When I open an old book and come across my previously scribbled notes — shaky ones when I've been reading on the subway, covered in sand if I read it at the beach, next to a train ticket if I was traveling — I am able to add an extra level of personal depth and experience to the story I am about to re-read. It's just not enough to simply consuming the story, which is what e-readers are great for.
When I read paper books, I hold onto them for long periods of time. I just purchased a new bookshelf specially for my “to be read” pile. Once in a while, I go through the process of deciding which books to donate, but usually the idea of parting with a book feels like giving away a part of my soul.
Physical books may not be the most efficient medium, but they are the most meaningful. So keep your Kindle, by all means. But I'll be happy hoarding with my library.

Over the years, the androids have been employed to perform a large number of human tasks, including building products and providing care and companionship for the elderly. The latest addition to the Japanese “workforce” may be Model-T.(面对人口下降和劳动力减少的问题,日本越来越多地求助于机器人。
根据第二段中“It named its robot Model-T, a nod to the Ford Motor car that began the age of mass motoring a century ago.(该公司将其机器人命名为Model-T,以纪念一个世纪前开启了大规模驾驶时代的福特汽车)”可知,Model-T名称背后隐藏的信息是它可能创造一个像福特汽车一样的新时代。故选B。
根据第三段中“However, the warehouse robots currently being used by companies, like Walmart and Amazon, are only able to accomplish single, repetitive tasks, such as carrying boxes. Model-T, on the other hand, has a wide range of movement and can be used to restock objects of various sizes, making it ideal for convenience and grocery stores, which sell a large variety of items.(然而,沃尔玛和亚马逊等公司目前使用的仓库机器人只能完成单一的、重复的任务,比如搬运箱子。另一方面,Model-T移动范围广,可用于补充各种大小的物品,使其成为便利店和杂货店的理想选择,这些商店销售各种各样的物品)”可知,Model-T与其他补货机器人不同之处在于,Model-T在履行职责时具有灵活性。故选C。
48.细节理解题。根据第四段中“However, Model-T is not autonomous. Instead, it is operated by human “pilots” wearing a virtual reality(VR) headset and special gloves, which allow them to feel the product the robot is holding in their hands and guide it to the right shelf.(然而,Model-T不是自动的。相反,它由戴着虚拟现实头盔和特殊手套的人类“领航员”来操作,这些设备让他们能够感受到机器人手中拿着的产品,并引导它到正确的货架上)”可知,Model-T在很大程度上要依赖人类的操作。故选D。
49.词义猜测题。根据画线词上文“Since the video connection between the robot and the human operator has a mere 50 milliseconds delay, the navigation process is”可知,由于机器人和人类操作员之间的视频连接只有50毫秒的延迟,所以导航过程很流畅。 A. Smooth.流畅的;B. Complex.复杂的;C. Time-consuming.耗时的;D. Annoying. 故选A。
根据最后一段“Though Model-T appears to have passed the trials, it is not quite ready to enter the labor force. Besides being a lot slower than human labour, it is also only capable of lifting packaged items, and cannot grasp loose items such as fruits and vegetables. Telexistence hopes to introduce a faster Model-T within the next two years.(虽然Model-T似乎已经通过了试验,但它还没有完全准备好进入劳动力市场。除了比人工慢很多,它也只能举起包装的物品,不能抓住松散的物品,如水果和蔬菜。Telexistence希望在未来两年内推出更快的Model-T)”可知,最后一段主要讨论了Model-T的局限性。故选A。
D
51.D 52.A 53.A 54.B 55.A
根据第二段中“A new analysis concludes that roughly half of the galaxy’s sunlike stars host rocky worlds in habitable zones where liquid water could pool or flow over the planets’ surfaces.”
根据第三段中“For nine years, Kepler stared at the stars and watched for the brief twinkles produced when orbiting planets block a portion of their star’s light.” 故选A。
根据第四段的首句“But Kepler’s primary goal was always to determine how common planets like Earth are.” 故选A。
根据第五段中“It took more than half a century for scientists to start pinning down how many planets could possibly host life.” 再根据“On average, nearly every star is home to at least one orbiting world.”
根据最后一段“Of course, many factors determine whether a world in the habitable zone is truly friendly for life. Planetary characteristics such as magnetic fields, atmospheres, and plate tectonics all play a role,”可知,当然,许多因素决定了一个位于宜居带的世界是否真的适合生命。 故选A。

56.Why did the author give his iPad to his brother (no more than 10 words)
57.What is the second paragraph mainly about (no more than 6 words)
58.Which word can take the place of the underlined word in paragraph 3 (1 word)
59.When the author has to give away some books, how does he feel about it (no more than 15 words)
60.Do you like e-readers or physical books Please explain your opinion. (no more than 25 words)(open)
56.Because he didn't like reading on the device .
Because it couldn't give him the right reading experience .
Because reading on the device couldn't help trace his life .
Because it couldn't add personal depth and experience to stories .
57.The advantage of e-readers .
Why the technology lovers choose e-readers.
58.Reading
59.He feels that he is giving away (a) part of his soul.
He feels that he is parting with (a) part of his soul.
He feels that it is like giving away/ paring with (a) part of his soul.
60.Possible answers:
I like reading physical books, because they are like my companions and more meaningful to me.
I like reading e-readers, because they are very convenient for me to lake them anywhere.
根据第一段的“But after two years of reading occasionally on the device, I gave it away to my brother. It just wasn't the right reading experience for me.( 但经过两年偶尔在这个设备上的阅读以后,我把它交给了我哥哥。 对我来说这不是正确的阅读体验)”以及第三段的“I can trace my life by the books that have been my companions.(我可以用一直陪伴我的书来追踪我的生活。)”和“I am able to add an extra level of personal depth and experience to the story I am about to re-read.( 我能够增加一个额外的个人深度和经验到我即将重新阅读的故事中。)” Because he didn't like reading on the device ./Because it couldn't give him the right reading experience ./Because reading on the device couldn't help trace his life ./Because it couldn't add personal depth and experience to stories .
根据第二段的“Technology lovers choose e-readers over books because e readers are more convenient. They're right. It is objectively easier to carry an 7oz. tablet with thousands and thousands of books at your fingertips than it is to carry five books in your bag(科技爱好者选择电子阅读器而不是书籍,因为电子阅读器更方便。他们是对的。比起把五本书装在你的包里,客观上携带7盎司重的平板电脑更容易,成千上万本书触手可得)”可知,第二段主要讲述电子阅读器的优点,爱好科技的人为什么喜欢选择电子阅读器。故答案为The advantage of e-readers ./Why the technology lovers choose e-readers.
上文“I am able to add an extra level of personal depth and experience to the story I am about to re-read.( 我能够增加额外的个人深度和体验到我即将重新阅读的故事中)”可知,重读已经读过的故事,作者增加了个人的认识深度,以及体验,因此推断作者不只是简单的读这个故事,即划线词词义为“阅读”,可以用reading代替。
根据倒数第二段的“Once in a while, I go through the process of deciding which books to donate, but usually the idea of parting with a book feels like giving away a part of my soul.(偶尔,我会经历一个决定捐赠哪些书的过程,但通常与一本书分开的想法就像赠送我灵魂的一部分)”可知,当作者必须捐赠一些书籍时,他感觉就像与自己的灵魂分离。 He feels that he is giving away (a) part of his soul./He feels that he is parting with (a) part of his soul./He feels that it is like giving away/ paring with (a) part of his soul.
I like reading physical books, because they are like my companions and more meaningful to me./I like reading e-readers, because they are very convenient for me to lake them anywhere.

Dear Jack,
I’m glad that you are interested in the Scholarly Campus activity in our school. I’m eager to tell you something about it.
Recently our school has held the Scholarly Campus activity with the aim of encouraging us students to read more books. We have conducted several activities, such as having class meetings about books, holding the second-hand book fair, sharing reading experience and so on. Now the concept of Scholarly Campus is so well-received that you can find students reading books all over the campus.
As for me, I’m more than happy to join in the activity. Not only does it arouse students’ interest in reading, but it also cultivates students’ love for knowledge and, more importantly, for life. I’m sure it will bring benefits for students.
Wish you all the best!
Yours,
Li Jin
