A high school senior in California called Ahmed Muhammad has started an organization that designs science kits(配套工具) for primary school students. He launched Kits Cubed to introduce kids to the wonders of science through fun, affordable, and accessible means, which owed to a babysitting experience.
He was babysitting his nephew when he decided that the activity for the day would be a science experiment. His nephew told him that he hated science because he was bad at it. “He literally loved everything and then when I brought up science, he doubted himself,” Muhammad told CNN. Muhammad was not going to let his nephew's self-doubt continue, so he decided to use simple science experiments to convince him that he was not bad at science.
“We went to the store together and I had him pick out potatoes, and then I went to the hardware store to buy some copper nails, some galvanized(镀锌的) nails and some wire. And then, we made a battery out of them,” he said. That was how Muhammad successfully convinced his nephew that he was not bad at science. “He actually likes science now,” he said.
From this experience, Muhammad started thinking to help more kids like his nephew. With the help of his teachers, he started designing science kits that explored real science concepts with simple everyday materials. So far, Kits Cubed sells three kinds of kits, with three experiments in each kit. Each kit sells for $15.
According to Muhammad, Kits Cubed has reached more than 2,000 young people in Oakland so far. “My nephew told me he was bad at science. He didn't like it. I want to remove that thought, and replace it with ‘I'm good at science and I can be a scientist if I want to’. That's what I really want them to get out of the kits,” said Muhammad.
24. What can we learn from Muhammad's babysitting experience
A. Children usually hate scientific experiments.
B. Muhammad extended his nephew's interest.
C. Muhammad got along well with his nephew.
D. Children could hardly remove self-doubt.
25. What can we know about the science kits
A. They are still in the trial period.
B. They use easily available materials.
C. They include three experiments in total.
D. They are independently designed by Muhammad.
26. Which of the following could best describe Ahmed Muhammad
A. Creative and capable.
B. Active and independent.
C. Tolerant and hard-working.
D. Humorous and warm-hearted.
27. What does Muhammad really expect children to gain from his science kits
A. The ability to do some research.
B. The respect for science and scientists.
C. The understanding of science concepts.
D. The confidence in learning science well.
【答案】24. B 25. B 26. A 27. D

Scientists have recently developed a method to 3D-print greener buildings using local soil that they say has the potential to revolutionise the construction industry.
Sarbajit Banerjee, a professor of chemistry and materials science and engineering at Texas A&M University, said 3D printing enabled a versatility that allowed them to print entire architectural facades, although getting such structures to meet existing building regulations remained a significant challenge.
Concrete remains the primary material used in many construction projects but it cannot be recycled and requires a lot of energy to mix and transport. The research team's aim is to print structures using the type of soil that can be found in any garden.
“While the wndespread use of concrete has widespread access to housing and enabled the growth of cities, this has come at a considerable environmental cost,” said Banerjee.
“The move to 3D-print concrete threatens to exacerbate this problem. However, we envision a new example of construction that uses naturally sourced materials. Using such materials will further pave the way for building designs that are specifically adapted to the needs of the local climate.
What's more, the use of local materials would reduce the need to transport concrete long distances, further reducing the environmental impact of the buildings.
The research team's plan to replace concrete with the earth beneath our feet depends on their ability to improve the soil's capability to stand the weight of the whole house, to which Banerjee said they “are making excellent progress”.
Once they have a clearer idea of the limits of the technology, Banerjee and his team plan to further investigate how it might allow for building on other planets. For instance, they have worked on addressing the problem of building all-weather roads in the subarctic. They hope the technology could one day be used beyond Earth, to create settlements on the moon or even Mars.
28. What's the latest development in construction
A. Recycling concrete. B. Reducing the construction cost.
C. 3D-printing buildings from local soil. D. Changing the construction regulations.
29. What does the underlined word “exacerbate” in paragraph 5 probably mean

C. The environmental footprint. D. The soil's weight-bearing capability.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The outlook for further studies. B. The explorations of the subarctic.
C. The limits of the new technology. D. The barrier to building on other planets.

More than half the world's population live in cities, and by 2050 the United Nations expects that proportion to reach 68 percent. This means more homes, roads, and other infrastructure. Such a construction boom is a great challenge for tackling climate change, because making steel and concrete generates around 8% of the world's anthropogenic carbon-dioxide emissions. If cities are to expand and become greener at the same time, they must be made from something else.
Chicago might become part of the answer. In recent years, wooden buildings have been getting steadily taller. The current record is held by the 85-meter-tall Mjostarnet building in Norway, completed in 2019.But this would be dwarfed by the River Beech Tower, a 228-meter building proposed for a site beside the Chicago River.
As the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) meeting heard this week, wood is one of the most promising sustainable alternatives to steel and concrete. It is not, however, everyday lumber, chipboard or plywood that is attracting the interest of architects. Rather, it is a material called engineered timber. This is a mix of different layers, each designed to meet the requirements of specific components such as floors, panels, cross-braces, and beams. Engineered timber is, moreover, usually made into large sections of a building in a factory. That cuts down on the number of deliveries that need to get to a construction site.
If building with wood takes off, it does raise concerns about there being enough trees to go round. But with sustainably managed forests that should not be a problem, says Dr. Ramage. A family-sized apartment requires about 30 cubic meters of timber, and he estimates Europe's sustainable forests alone grow that amount every seven seconds. Nor is fire a risk, for engineered timber does not burn easily.
32. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 1
A. Green expansion of cities.
B. The large population in cities.
C. The great need for infrastructure.
D. Negative effects of urbanization.
33. What is special about Mjostarnet building in Norway
A. It's a historical attraction.
B. It's the tallest wooden building.
C. It's second to the River Beech Tower.
D. It's beside the Chicago River.
34. Which of the following is a benefit of engineered timber
A. It arouses interest in architects.
B. It is made up of different layers.
C. It can be processed for different uses.
D. It can be delivered to the construction site.
35. What is Dr. Ramage's attitude towards wooden building
A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful.
C. Casual. D. Subjective.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. C 35. A

Everything is practice. When we learn ballet, gymnastics or soccer, we practice these movements in a conscious and repeated way. Through planned and repeated practice, we become good at these movements. ____36____ There's more to life than non-stop practice. Conscious living is the key to real health, growth and success.
Each day, we repeat movements, patterns of thought and behavior, and ways of interacting with others. With repeated practice, we become good at these things. If you constantly check Facebook or Twitter, that is practice. ____37____
In most cases, your actions are driven largely by your unconscious mind and most of the time you allow your unconscious and conditioned habits to take over. When you are conscious of what you are doing, you can decide whether this is an action or a thought pattern you want to practice or if there's an alternative you'd rather be good at. ____38____ The reality is that you won't always remember to do this, so remind yourself.
____39____ Studies show that the concept of life control is extremely necessary to your health, happiness and success. Through conscious living you can learn to listen more deeply to those around you and your own inner voice.
Changing your habits within a short space of time is not a practical solution in that the habit you're really changing is due to repeated practice. ____40____ Give yourself permission to make mistakes without feelings of guilt.

Through planned and repeated practice, we become good at these movements.(一切都是练习。当我们学习芭蕾舞、体操或足球时,我们会有意识地反复练习这些动作。通过有计划的反复练习,我们变得擅长这些动作)”以及后文“There's more to life than non-stop practice. Conscious living is the key to real health, growth and success.(生活不仅仅是不停的练习。有意识的生活是真正健康、成长和成功的关键)”可知,后文提到生活不仅仅是练习,可知本句是在说明生活就是练习。故A选项“事实上,我们的整个生活就是这样”符合语境,故选A。
【37题详解】
根据上文“Each day, we repeat movements, patterns of thought and behavior, and ways of interacting with others. With repeated practice, we become good at these things. If you constantly check Facebook or Twitter, that is practice.(每一天,我们都在重复动作、思维和行为模式,以及与他人互动的方式。通过反复的练习,我们变得擅长这些事情。如果你经常查看Facebook或Twitter,那就是练习)”可知,上文提到经常查看Facebook或Twitter,那就是练习,可见是在说明日常习惯。故D选项“你正在形成习惯,通常没有意识到”符合语境,故选D。
【38题详解】
根据上文“In most cases, your actions are driven largely by your unconscious mind and most of the time you allow your unconscious and conditioned habits to take over. When you are conscious of what you are doing, you can decide whether this is an action or a thought pattern you want to practice or if there's an alternative you'd rather be good at.(在大多数情况下,你的行为很大程度上是由你的潜意识驱动的,大多数时候,你允许你的潜意识和条件反射习惯接管。当你意识到你在做什么时,你可以决定这是你想要练习的一种行为或一种思维模式,还是有一种你更愿意擅长的选择)”以及后文“The reality is that you won't always remember to do this, so remind yourself.(现实是,你不会总是记得这样做,所以要提醒自己)”可知,上文提到行为很大程度上是由你的潜意识驱动的,可见做出的选择反映了你的信念和态度。故E选项“渐渐地,你做出的选择反映了你的信念和态度”符合语境,故选E。
【39题详解】
根据后文“Studies show that the concept of life control is extremely necessary to your health, happiness and success. Through conscious living you can learn to listen more deeply to those around you and your own inner voice.(研究表明,控制生活的观念对你的健康、幸福和成功是极其必要的。通过有意识的生活,你可以学会更深入地倾听你周围的人和你自己内在的声音)”可知,后文提到控制生活的观念对你的健康、幸福和成功是极其必要的,可见本段是在说明要有意识的掌控自己的生活。故B选项“有意识的生活让你掌控自己的生活”符合语境,故选B。
【40题详解】
根据上文“Changing your habits within a short space of time is not a practical solution in that the habit you're really changing is due to repeated practice.(在短时间内改变你的习惯不是一个实际的解决方案,因为你真正要改变的习惯是由于反复练习)”以及后文“Give yourself permission to make mistakes without feelings of guilt.(允许自己犯错误而不感到内疚)”可知,上文提到在短时间内改变你的习惯不是一个实际的解决方案,可见要改变习惯很难。故F选项“习惯很难改变,尤其是当你试图改变所有的习惯时”符合语境,故选F。

Mom was in extreme pain of cancer. I sat outdoors, watching the bees flying from one flower to another. I studied Mom's face, thinking how I could take her mind off the pain she was suffering. Her strong belief had always inspired and encouraged me. It was my turn to do the same for her—to encourage her to cheer up.
“Are the flowers in the field beautiful ” Mom asked weakly. She managed to find beauty in nature. Suddenly, I had an idea and asked her, “How about getting some flowers we can plant together in front of the house ” Mom's face slowly lit up and smiled. She said, “It sounds great.” Then we slowly climbed into the car.
Soon, we were wandering through rows and rows of colorful flowers. Mom's pain was forgotten temporarily as she bent over to choose a bunch of red roses. “Oh, how beautiful,” she whispered, pressing the flowers against her face.
A young lady approached and said, “Hello, ladies. It's a beautiful day for planting flowers. My name is Jenny. You can choose and buy whatever flowers you like.”
She was young and beautiful and I said thanks to her. I hurried to Mom's side, “I think we will have enough flowers to plant, Mom. Would you mind waiting in the car while I pay for them ”
“Let me carry the flowers for you,” Jenny smiled and said, “You are so kind and patient with your mother.” I replied, “Thank you. Mom is experiencing great pain because of her cancer. What I am doing is make her happy and forget her pain.” Suddenly, Jenny froze in her tracks.
She said, “My mom has cancer, too. May I please add your Mom's name to hers I'd be proud to pray for both of them—overcoming the difficulties and achieving a victory as soon as possible.”

1.续写词数应为150左右;

Mom was so happy that we talked a lot on the way home.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Hearing what she said, we were very inspired. I extended my gratitude to her, hugging her in my arms. Looking back, I saw Mom beamed a warm smile with tears twinkling in her eyes. Jenny smiled and then carefully packed up the flowers for us before reaching for a pen and a piece of paper. She said, “Now please give me your names and I will remember you forever.” After writing down our names on the paper, we said goodbye to her and headed back home.
Mom was so happy that we talked a lot on the way home. Mom prayed for Jenny's mom, for those suffering from cancer and for ourselves. She thanked me for asking her to go out that day. She smiled at those passing by and said hello to them even though they didn't hear what she was saying. On arriving at home, Mom asked me to plant the flowers in the garden so that they could grow, bloom and bring beauty to our home. I was happy that what I had done could make Mom cheer up and forget her pain gradually.

A. Creative and capable.
B. Active and independent.
C. Tolerant and hard-working.
D. Humorous and warm-hearted.
27 What does Muhammad really expect children to gain from his science kits
A. The ability to do some research.
B. The respect for science and scientists.
C. The understanding of science concepts.
D. The confidence in learning science well.

A. As a matter of fact, our entire life is like this.
B. Conscious living leaves you in charge of your life.
C. You have to try even harder to be perfect every moment.
D. You are forming the habit, usually without much awareness.
E. Gradually, you make choices that reflect your beliefs and attitudes.
F. Habits are hard to change, especially if you try to change all of them.
G. If you learn to be conscious, you can practice what you want to be good at.
