When a nameless woman was frustrated to see a man sleeping in a McDonald's,she took a photo of him and published it to a private Facebook group to express her criticism. After the man was given a chance to explain himself to the community, however, dozens of people gathered to help him get back on his feet.
21-year-old Simon Child has been homeless and struggling to support his son since the recent death of his mother. When the woman photographed him sleeping in the McDonald's,he had been catching up on his sleep in between his shifts at the restaurant in Fayetteville,Georgia.Upon hearing about the photo,Child said that his feelings were hurt - but thankfully,he doesn't feel that way anymore.

Though there are more than 100 Indian festivals observed annually, few are as popular as Diwali. Also known as the Festival of Light, the five-day celebration extends across many cultures and beliefs and is celebrated by almost a billion people worldwide.Diwali always falls between October and November, but the exact date of the festival changes in accordance with the Hindu lunar calendar.
This year's festival will begin on Thursday 12th November, with Dhanteras. The name comes from the words "wealth" (Dhan) and "thirteen" (Teras),which is the day of the lunar month that the celebration takes place.Dedicated to Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity, the day is celebrated with special prayers to obtain blessings for the welfare, success and well-being of loved ones.Devotees also welcome gods into their homes by decorating entrances with colorful lanterns and traditional temporary designs created using materials like colored rice, flowers and powder.Since purchasing something valuable, preferably gold or silver,on this day is considered lucky, many treat themselves to fine jewelry. Those who cannot afford luxury goods seek out cheaper items such as clothes or household goods.
The second day of the festival is called Kali Chaudas,or Narak Chaturdashi. For some, the day provides an opportunity to drive away evil spirits from homes and businesses through traditional rituals (仪式).Non-believers celebrate the day as Choti (small) Diwali and use it as an excuse to start the festivities early with feasts and environmentally-friendly fireworks.
The third day, which marks Diwali,is when the biggest celebrations occur. It begins early in the morning with a visit to a place of worship (礼拜),such as a temple,to seek god's blessings. They then get together with relatives and friends to exchange gifts and sweets, specially made for the occasion. Many even extend the Dhanteras shopping spree (抢购狂欢) and head to malls to seek out Diwali bargains. As the sun sets, festival observers worldwide light up their homes with small oil lamps and enjoy delicious traditional foods with their loved ones.

Many people will be familiar with automated writing through Gmail.A feature known as Smart Reply offers brief answers to routine emails. If someone asks, "Do you want to meet at 3 pm?" Gmail offers one-click responses such as "Sure!" If someone sends bad news,Smart Reply might offer "Ugh." It seems to have guessed what you want to say.
The New Yorker's John Seabrook recently described a more powerful version of this technology, called GPT-2,which can imitate his magazine's style very well.It seems natural to want to compare it to the human brain, but this would be wrong. The system is merely making some - admittedly very clever - guesses about which words follow which in a New Yorker-style sentence.
The metaphor(比喻)of the brain is attractive. But what computers are not able to achieve is creativity.Because they have been trained on past articles, they can only be derivative(模仿他人的).Furthermore, they cannot think up a topic or goal on their own, much less plan how to produce it with good judgment and style. At various points in the online version of his article, readers can see how GPT-2 would have carried on writing Mr.Seabrook's piece for him.The writing gives the impression of being human. But on closer reading,it is empty, not even making much sense.
Meaningless writing is not only the product of artificial intelligence. There is already a large quantity of writing by humans that seems to make sense, but actually doesn't,at least to a majority of readers. In 1996 Alan Sokal famously submitted a fake article to a magazine, with ideas that were complete nonsense but with language that expertly reproduced fashionable post-modernist academic writing. It was accepted by the magazine.Three scholars repeated the trick in 2017,getting four out of 20 fake papers published.
But to truly write, you must first have something to say.Computers do not have something to say. They await instructions. While the result may be grammatical English, this should not be confused with the meaningful kind.To create meaningful essays, systems like GPT-2 will first have to be combined with databases of real-world knowledge.
12. According to the author,automated writing ______ .
A. produces the same result as the brain
B. is able to create wonderful academic writing
C. plays an important role in our daily work
D. creates content that lacks actual sense
13. The example of Alan Sokal in the fourth paragraph is mentioned to show that ______ .
A. every coin has its two sides
B. people have the same rights as AI
C. humans also produce writing that is short of meaning
D. AI can help people to check the quality of writing to be published
14. What is very important in genuine writing, according to the author? ______
A. The instructions given. B. Correct grammar.
C. Real-world knowledge. D. Personal thought.
15. What is the author's view regarding computer-generated writing? ______
A. It is risky but beneficial.
B. It is interesting and worth trying.
C. It can only be possible theoretically.
D. It will never replace the human kind.
Have you ever gazed at a test question and wondered where on earth it came from? You were just certain the teacher never, ever covered the information, because it just wasn't in your notes. Then you discovered that some of your classmates did record the information in their notes. (1) ______
This is a common frustration. (2) ______ Very few people can write fast enough or concentrate long enough to record everything the teacher says.College lectures can last much longer than the lectures you receive in high school. (3) ______ For this reason, many college students deal with the potential problem of missing critical information by using shorthand (速记).It means you simply come up with a set of symbols or abbreviations (缩写) for common words you find in lectures.
( 4) ______ Students have been using this method for as long as they've been taking class notes. In fact, the origins of shorthand date back to ancient Greece during the 4th century B.C.
The trick is to develop a good system and to do it well.To do that, you have to practice. For instance, look through the textbooks for each course at the beginning of a term, and try to develop a list of the most commonly used words and make shortcuts for them. Then, find a few interesting passages and practice your course-specific shorthand. (5) ______ This will simulate (模拟) the real experience of taking notes during a lecture.Time yourself for each passage you practice.Pretty soon you'll start to build up speed.
A.Besides this, they can also be very detailed.
B.We miss things when we take class notes.
C.And furthermore, they got the question right.
D.Using shorthand in your writing is not a new idea.
E.This sounds much more complicated than it really is.
F.If possible, find a study partner to read the passages to you.
G.Since there are fewer of them to write, your speed will significantly increase.

I had always been very good at sports.Be it football or athletics of school sports meeting,I was always the winner. What I was best at was the 100-meter race, which other people said seemed to be incomplete without me.It was as if the other participants were competing for the second and third place,as the first place was always mine.
I took great pains to keep myself fit.But of late,my ankle had been bothering me a lot.It used to hurt very often. But I had to be fit soon,as the qualifying round (资格赛) for the State sports race was just around the corner.I was so lucky to be picked on behalf of the school to take part in the competition. This opportunity was so rare and precious to me,because I could perform on a bigger stage instead of the school playground. Moreover, the gold medal had always been my dream. So I had to qualify for the final.I worked out and paid extra attention to my ankle pain, too.
Then the important day dawned. The athletes representing various schools lined up for the 100-meter race.I did my warm-up and stood in position with my right leg bent and left leg stretched back.As the race was about to begin,I experienced the pain in my left ankle again. It was so bad.The pain was shooting up and just then I heard the announcement that the race was about to start.I told myself, "Yes,you can do it.This is your only chance." I started running, but I couldn't run as I had done before.I ran but was short of strength and the pain shot up again and again.I shouted out loud,so loudly that the person running beside me heard me and asked if I needed any help. But I didn't answer him and kept on running.
I was frustrated as I was expecting only to win.______
Until one day I saw a boy who was trying to get around in his wheelchair,I stopped blaming myself._______
