The following 4 famous paintings — from Jan van Eyck's portrait to Pablo Picasso's masterpiece — have stood the test of time.
The Amolfini Portrait
Jan van Eyck’s Amolfini Portrait, an oil painting on wood produced in 1434, in which a man and a woman hold hands with a window behind him and a bed behind her, is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces in the National Gallery, London. This painting is as visually interesting as it is famed. It is also an informative document on fifteenth-century society, through van Eyck's heavy use of symbolism — while husbands went out to engage in business, wives concerned themselves with domestic duties.
The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night, oil on canvas (帆布), a moderately abstract landscape painting of an expressive night sky over a small hillside village, during his 12-month stay at the mental hospital near Saint–Remy-de-Provence, France between 1889 and 1890. When the Museum of Modem Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collector in 1941, it was not well known, but it has since become one of van Gogh's most famous works.
The Harvesters
The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565. It depicts the harvest time which most commonly occurred within the months of August and September. Nicolaes Jonghelinck, a merchant banker and art collector from Antwerp, commissioned this painting. The painting has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City since 1919.
Guernica
Guernica, a large black-and-white oil painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso in 1937. The title 'Guernica' refers to the city that was bombed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War. The painting depicts the horrors of war and as a result, has come to be an anti-war symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war. Today, the painting is housed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid.

A. Guernica. B. The Harvesters.

C. It wasn't widely recognized before 1941.

My son Daniel's love for surfing began at the age of 13. After school he wore his wet suit, walked out beyond the surf line and waited to be challenged by his three-to six-foot companions. Daniel's love of the ride was tested one fateful afternoon.
“Your son’s been in an accident,” the lifeguard (救生员) reported over the phone to my husband Mike. “When he surfaced to the top of the water, the point of the board was heading toward his eye.” Mike rushed him to the emergency room. He received 26 stitches (针) from the corner of his eye to the bridge of his nose.
I was on an airplane flying home from a speaking arrangement while Dan's eye was being stitched. Mike drove directly to the airport after they left the doctor's office. He greeted me at the gate and told me Dan was waiting in the car, “Daniel ” I questioned. I remember thinking the waves must have been awful that day. “He's been in an accident, but he's going to be fine.” A traveling working mother's worst nightmare had come true.
I sobbed telling Daniel how awful I felt about not being there when the lifeguard called. “It's okay, Mom,” he comforted me. “You don't know how to surf anyway.” “What ” I asked, confused by his reason, “I'll be fine. The doctor says I can go back in the water in eight days.” Was he out of his mind For the next seven days he kept pressing me to let him go back on the board. One day after I repeated “No” to him for the 100th time, he said, “Mom, you taught us never to give up what we love.” I gave in.
I was tested in my own backyard on an important principle that I teach audiences in distant cities: Passionate (热情的) people hug what they love and never give up .

C. was challenged by several of his friends D. was hurt in the eye by his surfing board

According to a new research the more people in a country who have a particular gene(基因), the happier the nation will be. This DNA is known as the FAAH gene. People with a particular version of it tend to be cheerier souls. There is a link between levels of the FAAH gene and the number of people who say they are very happy.
Sweden—one of the happiest countries in the world—also has lots of happy DNA. Ghana, Nigeria, Mexico and Columbia all come out near the top in the happiness league, and have high rates of the gene. In contrast, the people of Iraq, Jordan and China are among the least likely to rate themselves as very happy and also have the lowest level of the FAAH gene.
However, wealth and health are found to have little effect on happiness. The finding could help explain why some of the world's poorest nations are also the happiest. In addition, the FAAH gene and an optimistic attitude would not always go hand in hand. For example, Russians and Estonians score very low in happiness, despite having the right happy DNA.
Professor Michael Minkov said,"The climate condition is associated with the nation’s happiness. We can notice the high occurrence of the FAAH gene in tropical(热带的) areas in the Americas and Africa. And the occurrence of the gene around the Mediterranean Sea is much lower than that in Northern Europe. "
The social experts say that genetics is not the only determinant(决定因素) of happiness The economic and political difficulties in some nations also contribute to the very low happiness scores. Nations that are not blessed with the right DNA aren’t necessarily miserable.
23. The new study shows that ________.
A. happiness is in your genes B. human body is made up of DNA
C. the FAAH gene will make people sad D. most people are satisfied with their lives
24. What does the underlined part " go hand in hand" in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Walk with friends. B. Be closely related.
C. Disappear from hands. D. Fight against each other.
25. What affects happiness according to Michael
A. Money. B. Health and fitness.
C Differences in climate. D. The number of population.
26. What can we learn from social experts
A. Economy is connected with politics.
B. Happiness is decided by many things.
C. There is no doubt about the study result.
D. The poorer the nation is, the less happy its people are.
D
Japan is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters because of its climate and topography(地形), and it has experienced countless earthquakes, typhoons, and other types of disasters.
A number of factors contribute to the high incidence of natural disasters in Japan. Firstly, the country faces extreme climate changes, such as seasonal rain fronts and typhoons, as well as heavy snowfall on the Sea of Japan. Secondly, Japan's topography is rugged(崎岖不平的). Thirdly, Japan is located in the Pacific earthquake belt and is often struck by earthquakes, while its complex coastline is vulnerable to tsunamis. And fourthly, Japan is located in the circum-Pacific zone, in which almost all the volcanoes of the world are concentrated, and has 83 active volcanoes—one-tenth of the world total.
Between the end of World War Il and the late 1950s, when Japan's defenses against disasters were weakened by the war, the country was hit by a series of major typhoons, violent earthquakes, and other disasters, and over 1, 000 lives were lost almost every year. The Ise Bay Typhoon of September 1959 killed more than 5,000 people, the biggest number in the postwar period. It urged the establishment of a planned and complete disaster prevention administration system, and in 1961 the Disaster Countermeasures Basic Act was made. After that measures for prevention, emergency relief, and recovery were linked interactively under a system that ensured effective ways to disaster countermeasures. In June 1960 a decision was reached to observe a "Disaster Prevention Day" each year on September 1 as a means of spreading disaster prevention knowledge and raising public awareness.
Japan in the 1960s thus began actively carrying out measures to shore up both the physical and institutional safeguards against disasters, with particular measures being placed on disaster prevention. These efforts have greatly reduced the number of people who die or become missing as a result of natural disasters. The declining trend is still continuing, and the number has fallen to between 100 and 200 per year in recent years.
27. Why do many natural disasters happen in Japan
A. Because of Japan's ignorance. B. Because of Japan's location.
C. Because of Japan's poor ability. D. Because of Japan's wrong measures.
28. What is most likely to happen in the circum-pacific zone
A. Heavy snowfall. B. Earthquakes. C. Typhoons. D. Volcanoes.
29. What can we know about the Ise Bay Typhoon
A. It showed Japan's defenses against disasters were weak.
B. It promoted the disaster prevention administration system.
C. It was the worst disaster in Japan's history.
D. It made about 1, 000 people lose their lives.
30. What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 4
A. There are still many natural disasters in Japan now.
B. Japan did a lot to fight against natural disasters in the 1960s.
C. The natural disasters in Japan are dropping.
D. Japan's measures against natural disasters have worked much.

According to a new research, the more people in a country who have a particular gene(基因), the happier the nation will be.
C. Differences in climate. D. The number of population.
26. What can we learn from social experts
A. Economy is connected with politics.
B. Happiness is decided by many things.
C. There is no doubt about the study result.
D. The poorer the nation is, the less happy its people are.
【答案】23. A 24. B 25. C 26. B

【答案】27. B 28. D 29. B 30. D
