Recently, an unhappy event has happened in a kindergarten in Chongqing. Most primary schools suggest that parents should come along with their children to school and guard the school gates from 7:40 to 8:00 in the morning. Opinions on this problem are different from person to person.
Sun Zhenyao, 13, Jiangbei
Safety comes first. I don’t think it’s a big problem for parents. They just have to stay at the school gate for a little longer. Also, it’s very crowded around school gates in the morning. On weekdays, guarding schools and keeping students safe should be the schools’ responsibility – not the parents’. Also, the time during which they have to stand guard is usually about 7:40 to 8:00 am, the morning rush hour. Some parents might get caught in a traffic jam and be late for their work. I don’t think this task should fall on the parents.

Arun Kumar Bajaj has a very unusual skill — he can paint with a sewing machine. Technically, it’s embroidering, not painting, but his artworks are so detailed that they can pass as paintings to the untrained eyes. And the fact that he does it all with a sewing machine just makes that much more impressive.
Arun was really good at drawing and painting while growing up and dreamed of becoming a famous painter, but his father died suddenly 15 years ago, which destroyed his plans and forced him to give up school in order to run the family business. His father was a tailor and he became one too, but he didn’t let the artist in him die. He started “painting” with a needle and thread, but instead of using his hands, he decided on a rather unusual tool — the sewing machine. It took him a while to master this unique art form, but today he is recognized as the world’s only sewing machine artist. His works become very popular both in India and abroad. It’s easy to see why, just by looking at them, but what really makes his embroideries special is the tool he uses.
“You need to be very careful because once you’ve stitched the cloth, there’s no way you can repair it,” Arun said. “It’s all done in a single layer to give the painting a neat look.”
Some of Arun’s most impressive works include a 4×2 feet painting of the court of Ranjit Singh which took the artist over a year to finish. Arun runs a tailoring business in the Adalat Bazar of Patiala, but he devotes a lot of his time to his artistic dream as well.
4. Why do Arun’s paintings leave a deep impression on people
A. They have rich contents. B. They take many years to finish.
C. They give people a sense of satisfaction. D. They are finished with a sewing machine.
5. What made Arun give up his former plans
A. His father’s sudden death. B. His families’ encouragement.
C. His love for drawing and painting. D. His position in his family business.
6. What can we infer about Arun’s work
A. It includes painting repair work. B. It requires the use of special cloth.
C It needs to be done with great care. D. It involves keeping handwriting neat.
7. What’s the text mainly about
A. Arun’s wonderful life journey. B. Arun’s most impressive works.
C. An expert good at embroidering and sewing. D. The world’s only sewing machine painter.

There was a time in the 1960’s and 1970’s when some people believed that coffee would replace tea as Britain’s favourite drink, but that did not happen, and today, tea remains Britain’s favourite drink.
To say that the British are fond of tea is something of an understatement(轻描淡写). From the Royal(皇室) Family down to the homeless and the out-of-work, tea is more than just a pleasure. It is an important part of life!
The popularity of tea in the United Kingdom has a long history. It was in 1657 that Thomas Garway, the owner of a coffee house, sold the first tea in London. The drink soon became popular as another choice besides coffee.
In those days, however, tea was not something for anyone. For a century and a half, it remained an expensive drink. Many bosses served a cup of it to their workers in the middle of the morning, thus inventing a lasting British institution, the “tea break”. But as a social drink outside the workplace, tea was served for the nobility(贵族) and for the growing middle classes. Among those who had the money for tea, it became very popular as a drink to be enjoyed in cafés and “tea gardens”.
It was the 7th Duchess of Bedford who, in around 1800, started the popular “afternoon tea”, which took place at about four o’clock. At about the same time, the Earl of Sandwich popularised a new way of eating bread with something (e. g. jam) between them, and before long, a small meal at the end of the afternoon with tea and sandwiches had become part of a way of life.
As tea became much cheaper during the nineteenth century, its popularity spread right through British society. In working-class households, it was served with the main meal of the day, eaten when workers returned home after a day’s labour. This meal has become known as “high tea”.
Today, tea can be drunk at any time of day. Most people in Britain drink tea for breakfast. The mid-morning “tea break” is an institution in British offices and factories. Later in the day, “afternoon tea” is still a way of life in the south of England and among the middle classes, while “high tea” has remained a tradition in the north of Britain.
8. Who played an important part in the beginning of tea time in England
A. Thomas Garway. B. The Royal Family.
C. The Earl of Sandwich. D. The Duchess of Bedford.
9. What does the underlined word “institution” mean in Paragraph 4
A drink B. workplace
C. tradition D. order
10. What can we learn from the passage
A. The “tea break” kept the workers from being sleepy after lunch.
B. Workers could enjoy a cup of tea in “tea gardens” at their workplace.
C. “High tea” was usually served with the main meal for the middle classes.
D. The “afternoon tea” together with sandwiches became popular in around 1800.
11. What is the best title of the passage
A. The Popularity of Tea B. Tea and the British
C. Tea and the Middle Class D. The History of Tea

The journey of a hi-tech message in a bottle has revealed the damage of plastic (塑料) pollution — as it was tracked more than 1,700 miles in a few months.
British researchers put GPS and satellite tags in 25 plastic bottles, and left them to drift (漂流) in the river Ganges(恒河) and Bay of Bengal (孟加拉湾) in India. Using mobile phones and satellite networks, the team tracked the containers across the sea — with one crossing 1,768 miles in just 94 days.
They hope the tech could be a “powerful tool” for raising awareness and changing behaviour. “Our message in a bottle tag shows how far and how fast plastic pollution can move,” said lead author Dr Emily Duncan, of the University of Exeter. “This is a truly global issue, as a piece of plastic dropped in a river or ocean could soon be washed up on the other side of the world,” she said. “Bottles in the Ganges moved in stages and got stuck — but once at sea covered greater distances, following coastal currents before dispersing (扩散) more widely.”
The 500ml containers were made the size, shape and buoyancy (浮力) of one normal plastic drink bottle to copy the movement of real rubbish. And open source hardware was used for the electronics inside, meaning researchers can “copy, modify or improve the solution we presented to track other plastics,” the team said.
“This could be used to teach about plastic pollution in schools, with children able to see where their bottle goes,” said another researcher. “Data from these tags could feed into global models to give us a clearer picture of how plastic moves across the ocean and where it ends up.”
12. Why did the researchers put GPS and satellite tags in the bottles
A. To learn the bottles’ travel route.
B. To measure the bottles’ drifting time.
C. To prevent the bottles from being lost.
D. To test the satellite network technology.
13. What can be inferred about plastic pollution according to Emily Duncan
A. It has caused global concern.
B. It can’t be effectively monitored.
C It spreads more quickly than expected.
D. It can be controlled in the early stage.
14 What can we know about the bottles used in the research
A. They are full of real rubbish. B. They are of the same shape.
C. They won’t get stuck at sea. D. They have more buoyancy.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The benefit of the research. B. The findings of the team.
C. The tracks of the bottles. D. The importance of data analysis.

“Do you forget to bring your homework to school ” my sixth-grade math teacher asked. I nodded my head and said in a low voice, “Yes, sir.” What a mistake I had made! I had completed my math homework. But when I headed for school, I forgot to put it into my schoolbag. Now my homework is still lying on the desk at home.
“You will have a get a zero then,” math teacher said. I was shocked. I had never received a zero in a math class before. But the school had rules, and the teacher had to let everyone follow them. I was immediately worried about my final math average, which was based on my homework and the tests. Would I get a C or even a D at the end of the term If so, what should I do
My next class was a gym class. As I walked down the hall with my classmates, all those feelings rushed out in hot tears. I wiped them away as quickly as I could. But when we entered the gym and sat down in our spots on the floor, it was clear to everyone around me that I had been crying.
My gym teacher, Ms. Brown, was an athletic teacher, often with a smile on her face. Her class was a good mix of calisthenics(健美体操) and games that give us all a good workout. And Ms. Brown was nice and compassionate(有同情心的). She loved her students and often came to help if the students were in trouble.
During that gym class, my mind was affected by the math homework and I was worried about my final math average. So I failed to devote my attention to Ms. Brown’s direction. And clearly, I was sad. I guessed that Ms. Brown found there was something wrong with me. When it was near the end of the gym class, she walked to me.
Paragraph 1:
She sat down to comfort me.

C. It needs to be done with great care. D. It involves keeping handwriting neat.
7. What’s the text mainly about

There was a time in the 1960’s and 1970’s when some people believed that coffee would replace tea as Britain’s favourite drink, but that did not happen, and today, tea remains Britain’s favourite drink.
To say that the British are fond of tea is something of an understatement(轻描淡写). From the Royal(皇室的) Family down to the homeless and the out-of-work, tea is more than just a pleasure.
A. drink B. workplace
C. tradition D. order
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. B

The 500ml containers were made the size shape and buoyancy (浮力) of one normal plastic drink bottle to copy the movement of real rubbish.
C. It spreads more quickly than expected.
D. It can be controlled in the early stage.
14. What can we know about the bottles used in the research

Apart from homework, I had a trip with my friends to visit some scenic spots to appreciate the beauty of nature and breathed fresh air, which broadened my horizons and relaxed myself after the tough exam.

She sat down to comfort me.

Paragraph 2:
I felt relaxed and decided to work harder at math.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
She sat down to comfort me. “Are you okay ” she asked. I told her about my trouble. Then Ms. Brown said to me, “We all make mistakes. " She told me what happened to her several days ago. I was surprised that she also made mistakes since I had thought she was perfect. She told me the world didn’t end because I got a zero in a math class and encouraged me to study hard.
Paragraph 2:
I felt relaxed and decided to work harder at math. In math classes, I paid more attention to the teacher's lectures. After reaching home after school, I would do the math homework more carefully. And I left notes to remind me not to forget to bring my homework to school again. At the end of that term, based on my good daily performances and test scores, my final math average was an A. This experience taught me a lesson: as long as we learn from mistakes, we’re making progress.
