He was a little, skinny (痩得皮包骨的) old man and lived by himself. No one knew much about him. One day, he got a bad cold and called for a doctor.
While the doctor was examining the old man, he asked, “Don’t you have a friend who could come to look after you ”
“No, I have no friends. I’ve never had any,” the old man replied.
“You’ve lived in this village all your life and never had a friend ” the doctor asked, surprised.
“Well, I’m not ashamed to say that I am 70 years old but I never met anyone I could call a friend for long. If it isn’t one thing wrong with them, it is another,” the old man answered.
“Come, come. Our village head, Mr. Black, will surely come to your aid if he knows you’re sick. I’m sure you know him too,” the doctor said.
“Of course I know him.” replied the old man, “but it’s so boring to hear him talk. You’d imagine the world had nothing in it but his wheat field and those pigs he always talks about.”
“Then what about Mr. White who lives down the road ” the doctor said.
“The most selfish fellow I ever came across, though I admit he’s clever. He’s traveled to many places and read many books and is very interesting to talk to. He used to come here a lot at one time. But he would only come when he felt like doing so and he would stay away for long periods of time. I don’t call that friendship.”
The doctor laughed. “You surely can’t bring up anything against Mr. Smith though Everyone loves him.”
“You’re right,” agreed the old man. “He has a good sense of humor and is great company, but his noisy tongue makes my poor head ache.”
“I’m afraid you see so many of your neighbors’ bad points that you’re blind to their good ones. You’re a hard nut to crack, old man. Anyway, please call me if you need me. As a doctor, I’ll attend to you whether you like me or not,” the doctor said as he picked up his bag and hat to leave.

Volunteering means working for free to help someone else. Mrs. Obama says volunteering is very important. "It should be part of everyone's life,"she says.
Many teens agree. They say that helping others feels great and makes a difference.
These days, more teens volunteer than work for pay. Teens clean up parks, walk dogs at animal shelters, visit the elderly, and more.
Some cities— including Seattle, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.— require high school students to volunteer. Students must volunteer in order to graduate. The student volunteers learn new skills and help their communities( 社区).
Many parents subscribe to the idea and they say volunteering helps teens build job skills. But most teens don't want to be forced to volunteer. They say they are busy. And they say volunteering is only fun if it's a choice.
Read both sides of the debate and decide.
Yes
Volunteering can help teens get into college or get a job.
Many cities and towns need help. Volunteers can help keep important programs going.

Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei officially launched the 2.0 version of its self-developed operating system (OS) on Wednesday night, the HarmonyOS(鸿蒙系统). The move paved the way for the Chinese firm to challenge Google's and Apple's role in current and future OS ecosystems.
Among the major advantages, the HarmonyOS, with a highly scalable(可扩展的)distributed platform, can be applied to multiple devices, including smartphones, computers, and other electronic devices, the company said.
Analysts(分析学家) said the OS will do a lot to promote Huawei's transformation into being a software service provider. Huawei's founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei said that the company was focusing on software because future development in the field was fundamentally “outside of US control and we will have greater independence and autonomy(自主权)”. Ren called on the company's staff to “dare to lead the world” in software.
“The success of a software system will always have to rely on hardware(硬件), but currently, Huawei doesn't have enough hardware to support its software ambitions — that's the most difficult part,” said Jiang Junmu, chief writer at a news website. Once as the world's largest smartphone maker, Huawei's domestic(国内的) smartphone market share has continued to drop in recent months. Liang Zhenpeng, an industry analyst, said that as an OS aimed for the Internet of Things(IoT) era, the HarmonyOS may need more time and equipment to test than the OS for smartphones, and that will take at least two to three years.
Moreover, Liang noted that an ecosystem will always be the decisive factor for the success of an operating system. “Does the HarmonyOS have enough applications that can attract consumers to update to the OS That's a question,” Liang said. So far, more than 300 application and service partners, 1000 hardware partners, and 500,000 developers have participated in the construction of the Harmony ecosystem.
12. What highlights the HarmonyOS
A. It operates faster than Google system.
B. It works on a diverse range of equipment.
C. It provides users with a secure experience.
D. It has different versions in different countries.
13. What can we infer according to what Ren Zhengfei conveyed in his words
A. Huawei's transformation is challenging.
B. Huawei will break its dependence on the US.
C. The company's staff need to improve their skills.
D. Huawei is seeking a new software service provider.
14. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The future software ambition of Huawei.
B. The success of developing the HarmonyOS.
C. Smartphone sales in the domestic(国内的) market.
D. The difficulties in promoting the HarmonyOS.
15. What does Liang expect partners and developers to do
A. Create enough applications.
B. Update the original devices.
C. Establish a HarmonyOS ecosystem.
D. Cooperate with experts in various fields.
