This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. As I searched the name, I found that there were two famous people having the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts(花生), while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice; let the coin decide. I flipped(掷) a coin and Ah! Tails (背面)! My report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.
Weeks later, I stood in front of the classroom and proudly read my homework. But things started to get strange. I looked around the room, only to find my classmates with big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes and my stone-faced teacher. I was completely lost. “What could be causing everyone to act this way ”
Oh well, I dropped the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American War of Independence.” The whole world became quiet! How could I know that my teacher meant that George Washington
Of course, my subject result was awful. Sad but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to the headmaster Miss Lancelot, but she said firmly: No re-dos; no new score. I felt that it was not fair, and I believed I deserved a second chance. So I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, I sat in the headmaster’s office again, but this time a completely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the terrible moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster told me I was good enough to skip(跳过) the 6th grade and started the 7th grade next term.

Young trees don’t just grow; they develop a personality and learn more about their environment and how they should best behave in it. They also help each other out whenever there’s trouble.
Personality, just as among people, varies among trees. Some are anxious, some bold. On the author’s land, there are three oak trees growing close together. One of the oak trees always starts to shed its leaves two weeks earlier than the others. Since they all experience the same temperature, the same soil and the same length of day, such variables can’t be the explanation. So what’s happening Well, this tree is simply more careful than the others. Whoever holds on to their leaves longer can do more photosynthesis(光合作用) and store more nutrients. However, the longer a tree keeps its leaves, the higher the risk of injury.
Not only do trees make their own decisions, they also learn from their mistakes. A tree, for example, keeping its leaves too long during one year will never make this mistake again. This leads to several other conclusions:trees must notice the temperature and the length of the day and be able to save their experiences somewhere. Obviously, trees don’t have brains, but it is thought that in the sensitive tips of their roots they keep track of information and experiences.
But trees aren’t only clever when it comes to caring for themselves. They also support each other whenever there’s trouble by giving warnings and even taking care of sick and weak conspecifics with nutrients. For example, one time the author found a very old tree stump. Its insides had rotted a long time ago to topsoil. But the wood on the outside of the stump was still living. How was this possible Well, the stump was nourished by its neighbors with nutrients from the root system, and had been for at least 400 years!
Why do trees do such a thing? It’s simple: it’s better together. Trees need the forest; it protects them from storms, provides the right microclimate and warns them of attacks.
38. Why does the author mention the three oak trees
A. To illustrate trees can learn from experiences.
B. To show trees can make independent decisions.
C. To explain trees are quite supportive to each other.
D. To prove trees have the same personalities as humans.
39. According to the text, which of the following best describes general features of trees
A. Anxious and bold.
B. Smart and adventurous.
C. Helpful and well behaved.
D. Adaptable and supportive.
40. What does the underlined phrase “do such a thing” mean
A. Give warnings. B. Offer assistance.
C. Depend on others. D. Provide nutrients.
41. Where does this text most probably come from
A. A public lecture. B. A science book.
C. An experiment report. D. A travel journal.

When Americans think of the lunch menu at their childhood school cafeterias, they probably imagine a shapeless, tasteless pile of mystery meat – plus some brown much(糊状物),to match. But for children in Japan, school lunches are a rich experience where the students learn about culture and nutrition of foods.
“Japan’s standpoint is that school lunches are a part of education, not a break from it,” Masahiro Oji, a government director of school health education in Japan, told The Washington Post. The food offered at schools in Japan is affordable, fresh, and made by the students themselves. And Japanese children don’t just eat the food they prepare; they learn about the nutritional and cultural elements of their meals, too. The food is grown locally and includes a balanced menu of rice, vegetable, fish and soups. As a bonus, each meal costs just $2.50.
“Parents hear their kids talking about what they had for lunch,” Tatsuji Shino, the principal at Umejima Elementary School in Tokyo, told The Washington Post, “and kids ask them to re-create the meals at home.” Japanese students also learn cooperation and etiquette(礼仪)as they serve and clean up after each other.
Considering the fact that Japan has one of the world’s lowest childhood obesity rates(肥胖率), the U.S. probably has a lot to learn from this country’s school lunches. A recent study found that American students who regularly ate the school lunch – where foods to be chosen include pizza, chicken and French fries – were 29 percent more likely to be obese than those who brought lunch from home.
From American parents who want to be a little more like the Japanese, try sending your children to school with these unique school lunches for kids who hate sandwiches.
42. Why did the author mention American school lunches at the beginning of the text
A. To show different food cultures.
B. To express sympathy for the American.
C. To criticize American school lunches.
D. To introduce Japanese school lunches.
43. What’s the Japanese point of view on school lunches
A. Kids should have school lunches for free.
B. School lunches must be prepared by students.
C. Kids can’t bring lunches to school from home.
D. School lunches shouldn’t be separated from school education.
44. What does the author want to tell us in the fourth paragraph
A. American school lunches are likely to make people fat.
B. American school lunches are more popular.
C. More people prefer studying at American schools.
D. American kids are the fattest in the world.
45. What’s the author’s attitude towards American school lunches

___46___ Your trip journal can begin before your trip has started Use your journal to start planning the things you want to do. It can be a cool restaurant where you want to eat, a hike you want to go on or different sights you want to see.
Write about what you imagine it will be. Sometimes when you travel, your destination is wildly different from what you expected. Maybe you expected the local food to be bad but it turned out to be delicious. ___47___ Maybe you thought you would not be comfortable with the climate while you adapted to it. Whatever, try to write it down before you arrive. It will be interesting to compare these predictions to what you have actually experienced.
___48___ It is always easier to remember things when they are fresh in your brain, but it may be diluted(冲淡)with time going by.

D. To introduce Japanese school lunches.
43. What’s the Japanese point of view on school lunches
