The night before the first day of school is usually an exciting and sleepless one for me. This virtual (虚拟的) school year, however, didn't give me that same feeling. In my mind, I couldn't communicate with my classmates, and I couldn't have conversations with my favorite teachers. So I went to bed, filled with more curiosity (好奇) and uncertainty than anything else.
I woke up the next day at 9 a. m., as my first class that day didn't start until 10 a.m. I sat at my desk waiting for my first online class of the day: AP Statistics. The class could only be described as two things: awkward and a bit boring. Awkward because of the lasting silence that often fell over us, as most of the students, myself included, refused to discuss their summers, and boring because I had to look at a screen instead of truly communicating with my teacher.
I would have preferred sitting in a classroom wearing my picked first-day clothes, but, I didn't say anything. I knew it was much safer for us to learn from home.
Once the class ended, my one-hour lunch block began. My virtual lunch was at 11:20 a.m.
My next two classes flew by. They had the same awkwardness and boredom, with different levels of enjoyability based on the subject and teacher.
At the end of the day, I felt strange, and like I hadn't done anything at all or even actually gone to school. I never felt like I hadn't done anything with myself that day before. I didn't even feel like a student on a “pursuit (追求) of knowledge.” I just felt like I was watching something on my computer screen.
It wasn't my favorite thing in the world, but, it's the new normal (常态), and I and my classmates will have to get used to it.

A. He couldn't have real communication with the teacher.
B. He couldn't understand what the teacher said.

6. What can we say about the writer at the end of the day
A. He had got used to the new school life.
B. He preferred to have a class online.
C. He hated to do much homework.
D. He felt empty in his heart.
7. How is the text mainly developed
A. By giving examples.

Eden Gross wants kids to know that they’re not alone when they feel afraid. “I get fearful sometimes,” said the Florida fourth-grader, who has often been drawn to dark stories. At age 8, Eden started writing songs to deal with her fears. Last month, she released (发行) her first song, “Shadows on the Wall.” It’s for kids everywhere who have problems with mental (精神的) health. The point of the song is that the fears “aren’t reality,” said Eden, now 10. “I am bigger than these fears.”
Eden began writing “Shadows on the Wall” in 2019 after attending the Throga Retreat, a youth singing program about two hours from her home in Parkland. There, she met Johnny Cummings, a New York-based singer, songwriter, and producer. After the program, the pair worked together each week through Skype. They finished “Shadows on the Wall” and a second song, “The Last Kid on Earth,” which centers on the idea that although each person is different, we all feel alone sometimes.
Eden wants more grown-ups to understand the influence of COVID-19 on children. “They’re used to running around, playing with their friends. Getting used to new realities was really hard,” Eden said.
Eden and her twin brother, Jordan, recently marked one year of distance learning (远程学习). It was unusual at first. They weren’t getting used to it and missed their days in school. “The Internet has become our whole world,” said Eden. “Technology has become our new way of connecting.”
One lesson from COVID-19, said Eden, is to “find a way to do what you love and be who you are, no matter the environment.” For Eden, that means spending time with the family’s pet, Ollie, and continuing to follow her dream of music and writing. She’s busy with her third song, “The Voices.” “It’s about judging (评价) yourself in your head when you say, ‘I’m not good enough,’” she said. “And then realizing, ‘I am good enough. I am good enough for me.’ ”
8. Why did Eden Gross start to write songs at age 8
A. To tell people how to deal with their fears.
B. To give herself the courage to deal with fears.
C. To call on grown-ups to care about kids.
D. To ask kids to face reality bravely.
9. What encouraged Eden Gross to write “Shadows on the Wall”
A. The experience of attending a program.
B. Her sadness about being alone.
C. Her dream of being a singer.
D. The spread of COVID-19.
10. How did Eden Gross feel about distance learning at first
A. It was satisfying. B. It was strange.
C. It was boring. D. It was useful.
11. What is Eden Gross’s next plan
A. Finishing her third song. B. Staying with her family.
C. Going to music school. D. Keeping a pet.

Some people will say that you can place a value on anything. We may know the price of milk. We can also find out the value of the most expensive building in the world. Do you think it is possible to put a price on the Earth or other planets
You probably think this is impossible. Scientist Greg Laughlin thought differently. In March 2009, NASA sent the Kepler telescope (望远镜) into space to explore the Milky Way galaxy and to find Earth-sized planets orbiting (环绕) other stars. As there are billions of stars within the Milky Way, it could mean there were several thousand planets to discover. How could scientists decide which ones to study further and which ones to take no notice of
Professor Laughlin used information received from the Kepler telescope to create a formula (公式) that puts a price on planets. The age and size of each planet, its temperature, and the energy (能量) it created were considered. Older planets were given a higher value. The most important consideration was whether or not it may be possible for life to live on the planet.
By using his formula, Professor Laughlin found that planet Earth was the most important. He gave it a value of five quadrillion (千的五次幂) dollars. Mars was given a value of US$16,500 and Venus was valued at zero. That’s because it’s impossible to support life on Venus because it is too close to the Sun. The professor said that any planet that had a value of more than US$100 million was worth studying further.
By November 2018, about 1,200 planets in total had been looked at. Most of them were worthless because of their unsatisfactory conditions. So should you run to the bank and borrow US$16,500 so you can buy Mars Maybe not today. You should just enjoy the five quadrillion dollar planet you already live on — and learn how to look after it.
12. What purpose does the first paragraph serve
A. To describe the prices of different things.
B. To bring up the topic of values of planets.
C. To introduce a scientific question.
D. To show a research result.
13. What part of Laughlin’s formula carries the most value
A. A planet’s temperature.
B. A planet’s age and size.
C. The amount of energy a planet creates.
D. The possibility for life to live on a planet.
14. What does the underlined word “That” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Venus was valueless.
B. Venus is too close to the Sun.
C. Mars was much cheaper than Earth.
D. A planet was usually valued at over US$100 million.
15. What does the writer expect people to do in the last paragraph
A. To study space science. B. To protect and love Earth.
C. To save money to travel in space. D. To support scientific organizations.

【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. B
